pros:
the content is good, viewed from a practical point of view
cons:
somewhat old version,no real hard cover, higher price
Excellent.......2007-01-21
Great introductory staff for those who wanted to understand the basic operations. You cannot learn all about refinery operations from the book but rest assured that you will know the right questions to ask for any situation.
EXCELLENT SOURCE OF INFORMATION.......1999-04-05
I am a luckier engineer, because I met with Mr. Lieberman, he is an excelent process engineer, anh he have a large experience in troublessoting subject. I have one of these book and is my favorite source of information, In fact I am working in Refinery...
Logical Process Troubleshooting - The Practical Approach.......1997-12-07
Norm Lieberman shares his 20+ years of refinery experience in a comprehensive book that illustrates the wisdom of gathering enough information to make an informed decision. Written for engineer and control personnel alike, "Troubleshooting Process Operations" is worth it's weight in gold.
Book Description
Petroleum refiners must face billion-dollar investments in equipment in order to meet ever-changing environmental requirements. Because the design and construction of new processing units entail several years' lead time, refiners are reluctant to commit these dollars for equipment that may no longer meet certain conditions when the units come on stream. Written by experts with both academic and professional experience in refinery operation, design, and evaluation, Petroleum Refining Technology and Economics, Fifth Edition is an essential textbook for students and a vital resource for engineers. This latest edition of a bestselling text provides updated data and addresses changes in refinery feedstock, product distribution, and processing requirements resulting from federal and state legislation. Providing a detailed overview of today's integrated fuels refinery, the book discusses each major refining process as they relate to topics such as feedstock preparation, operating costs, catalysts, yields, finished product properties, and economics. It also contains end-of-chapter problems and an ongoing case study.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview.......2007-07-06
I am an investment analyst and used this book to get up to speed on an unfamiliar industry. I found it to be clear, well organized, and containing all the info I needed to understand the dynamics driving the business and the lingo. There was more engineering and scientific info than I needed for my purposes, but it was useful to thumb through those chapters to get a high level understanding of the issues. Highly recommended for people new to the industry.
do you want to major in this field?.......2005-02-15
This subject enables much of modern civilisation. From producing fuel for transport, of course. But the entire plastics industry also depends on these refineries. So Gary explains to a reader who hopefully has had some exposure to chemistry, how this comes about.
The level of discussion is both at the molecular level of chemistry, but also at the engineering level of what this means in order to have an economically viable refinery. An undergraduate who is casting around, uncertain if she wants to major in chemical engineering, might be encouraged to read this book. It gives her a detailed perspective on the issues of the field.

Above Ground Storage Tanks, by Philip E. Myers.......2007-01-20
I expected more for process engineer such as selection basis and sizing basis and guide line for each tanks advantage and disadvantages, which was not completely covered.
This is book for Mech, enggs
Superb Book..... Well worth the time and Money.......2001-05-04
As a mechanical engineer with nearly 30 years of process equipment experience, I find this book invaluable for the design, specification and operation of storage facilities.
Meyers has a well organized, informative text with an easy to find index. The book is particularly useful where the pros and cons of design alternatives are compared. I have seen heated discussions resoved based on Meyer's recommendations.
As anyone who has delt with tank design over the past several years can tell you, design practices, recollections and anecdotes, combined with the occasional company guideline were the only references available. Now Meyers comes forth with an authoritative text that fills a long standing need.
Purchase this book along with the Aboveground Steel Storage Tank Handbook by Brian Digrado and you have (virtually) everything important that has been written about aboveground storage tanks.
4 stars.......1999-06-22
. . We had a copy from the british library. It was so useful we decided to buy one despite the price.

Book Description
Catalysis plays an increasingly critical role in modern petroleum refining and basic petrochemical industries as market demands for and specifications of petroleum and petrochemical products are continuously changing. As we enter the 21st century, new challenges for catalysis science and technology are anticipated in almost every field. Particularly, better utilization of petroleum resources and demands for cleaner transportation fuels are major items. It was against this background that the 2nd International Conference on Catalysts in Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Industries was organized. The conference was attended by around 300 specialists in the catalysis field from both academia and industry from over 30 countries. It provided a forum for the exchange of ideas between scientists and engineers from the region with their counterparts from industrialized countries.
The papers from the conference, which were carefully selected from around 100 submissions, were refereed in terms of scientific and technical content and format in accordance with internationally accepted standards. They comprise a mix of reviews providing an overview of selected areas, original fundamental research results, and industrial experiences.

Customer Reviews:
Good source of practical knowledge........2005-01-19
For a long time I have been looking for a book like this one. Finally, I had found it. Just from the Table of Contents, you will see that includes a broad range of applications in parameter estimation such as: linear, non-linear, ODEs, PDEs and also algorithm's implementation. Special topics, such as sensitivity analysis in ODE models, Information index (where to do the measurements in order to maximize the content of information of the experimental data), and Statistical inference (i.e. parameters' inference, model adequacy test, etc.) are exposed with clarity.
I particularly like the section of Solved Problems, were you can compare your own algorithms with the ones exposed in the book. I work with Matlab (including my own algorithms), and I have done a couple of comparisons that match perfect the numerical results shown in the book.
Many of the typical problems that I have faced in the area of parameter estimation were mentioned in the book; also very good recommendations or practices on how to avoid them are explained. In addition, there is a short section on shortcuts in the "bio" area.
A very good source of practical knowledge for those one interested in the topic.
