Customer Reviews:
Helpful hints indeed!.......2006-03-22
This book is surprisingly fun. You name it and this book has a tip on the most effective way to do it. I bought this book in conjunction with two other home maintenance and repair books and it has many items that were not covered in the other two. I only gave it three stars because I will probably only refer to this one after the other two to verify that there isn't an easier way. What would make this book better? I say combine this book with their "New Fix-It-Yourself Manual" (my top choice), and you have an ace book!
This book is amazing........2002-01-15
I have not bought this book...yet. I recently borrowed it from the library, and will keep renewing it until they force me to return it. When they do, I intend on hunting it down at my neighborhood bookstore.
This book is very comprehensive for the do-it-yourselfer that is just starting out, and contains many neat tips and tricks that even the expert handyman would not have known. The book is extremely useful for everyday stuff, and even has instructions on those once a year fix-it items.
The book is arranged in different categories, such as Lawn & Garden, Plumbing, Electrical Appliances, with subcategories like pruning, toilets, and washer/dryer. About half of each page is covered with colorful handrawn pictures that apply to the tips listed. Most tips don't have pictures, but these are usually ones that don't require them. The other half of the page contains detailed instructions on how to replace/repair/install items of importance. These instructions have real pictures of the process, and are wonderful for reference.
I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a home. Once you buy it, read everything once so you'll know what's in there, then put it in an accessible place so you can grab it at a moments notice.
Excellent source of clever ideas and tips.......1999-10-21
While not a comprehensive home repair guide (superficial instructions and difficult to see and poorly labeled photos and diagrams), this book is a useful addition to a home repair library. When tackling a home repair, the book provides numerious time-saving and result enhancing suggestions on how to make the job go more smooothly with a higher quality outcome.

As a single parent and homeowner, I can't tell you how handy this book has been. If you don't have a friend, relative or spouse who's a handyman, you definitely need this book. I've been able to save enough money to furnish my home. I've purchased many of the Reader's Digest books in the past and found them to be of high quality and excellent value. This book contains step-by-step procedures and instructions that are depicted in numbered color photos that makes easy work of repairs and maintenance-plus you are assured it's done right.

Unique Gourmet Flavors for the Adventurer.......2007-10-06
This is one of my favorite books. Because every time I've made a recipe for an invitation, neither I nor my guests can stop raving about how fantastically delicious the flavors are. This is the book I refer to for great ideas, great reading, and to indulge my palate. Of special note, is the section on dinner themes for entertaining, starting on p. 171. And if you would like to see for yourself, try the following menu: Reggae Evening, which includes: Montego Red Pea Soup (one of the best soups I've ever had - complex flavors that will have your taste buds singing), Home-Style Jamaican Chicken (melts in your mouth juicy), La Bamba Rice and Rum Raisin Ice Cream (as with all homemade Ice Creams - better to eat within a few hours). This dinner is a great way to entertain a party of 6, you will be pleasantly surprised!
A Great International Culinary Tour.......2007-08-13
I enjoy cooking with this book a whole lot.
The recipes are easy to follow, the variety is nice to see, and the extra tidbits of information are a nice touch for those "armchair" cooks out there.
If you're looking for a pretty photo filled cookbook, this isn't for you, but you're into real content and excellent recipes, go for this book.
I'm especially fond of the North African and Eastern European recipes.
A go to cookbook.......2005-10-16
It isn't exactly the definitive cookbook for whatever cuisine you are looking for but the recipes are a great starting point for trying new cuisines or exploring those you currently enjoy. Every recipe I have tried has come out great. It's really good for impromptu dinners or week night suppers because the ingredients are easy to find and the recipes are easy to follow. In addition you get a nice travelogue that accompanies the various cuisines. It's basically a fun cookbook to cook from and to read.
Great, but title is misleading.......2005-09-26
I have always found Sheila Lukins' cookbooks to be excellent. While not always completely practical (but one could get around this by learning to substitute canned chicken stock for her homemade, etc.), the recipes always work, and 99% of the time they taste good.
I have tried many recipes in this cookbook since I first got it 8 or so years ago, and I have been pleased with all of them (especially her soup recipes, which are always delicious). I have made many of them for company, and my guests have always enjoyed them. (The Summer tomato risotto is a favorite recipe when the temperature here begins to rise).
That said, these are not all "authentic" recipes - this cookbook, I'm sure, was a Herculean effort in and of itself to put together, and tracking down truly authentic recipes would probably have been more work. This cookbook should really have been called "Restaurant Recipes from All Around the World and Recipes inspired by International Dishes" (or something to that effect.) If you are looking for truly authentic dishes, this is not the book to go to - I would simply pay for cookbooks by native chefs from the countries that you are interested in - but if you are interested in easy, delicious recipes by Sheila Lukins and her friends, a sort of continuation of the Silver Palate cookbook, then this is for you.
Variety and variations.......2004-09-01
Lukins satisfies any number of hankerings with a mix of modern and traditional, capped with her own American flair.
Organized by course (appetizer, soup, meat, etc) rather than by cuisine, Lukins, of "Silver Palate" fame, adapts a Chilean cooking marathon to a refreshing fresh corn and chicken chowder, journeys to the hills of Martinique for a rich curried pork, cajoles a Seville chef for the secret of dorade baked in salt.
Although she offers plenty of traditional recipes, from Magyar Goulash to Swedish Roast Goose, she's just as likely to sample something and be inspired to embellish - or simplify. Chapters are interrupted with short essays on regional wines or teas or markets. The variety is endless, variations are encouraged and every dish is guaranteed to make your mouth water.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-01-09
This cookbook is excellent. It has recipes from all walks of life in the way of different cultures. I will surely be enjoying it for years to come with my weight loss efforts.
Great Cookbook!.......2005-07-28
This is an excellent cookbook. Meals are healthy versions of homecooked food from the main regions of the U.S. I have already cooked several recipes and my family has loved them all. I have served dinner guests with "untested in my kitchen" recipes. The meal was great! Tonight I am using a fish recipe. Can't wait to taste. With cooking like this, dieting and eating healthy is quick and easy.
A little disappointing.......2004-07-17
I have recently bought eight (!) Weight Watchers cookbooks from Amazon, and this is the first one I have been disappointed with. I have found it easy to buy or substitute ingredients called for in the other books, but less so with this one (elk steaks, anyone?) OK, it is an "All-American" cookbook, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. But this is a word of warning for would-be purchasers living outside the States. And it's puzzling that a few of the recipes call for vegetable shortening (copha). The last time I checked, this was a very unhealthy saturated fat, and definitely not recommend for anyone who is weight - or health - conscious. But my biggest gripe is that the few recipes I have tried so far have been bland or pretty ordinary - which has cetainly not been the case for the other Weight Watchers cookbooks. All up, not really recommended.
Best Southern Foods Section.......2004-07-05
I can't speak for all the regions, but the section on southern food is amazing. Having grown up in the South where comfort food is often deep fried, I have really struggled to find authentic lowfat recipes. I can honestly say that the foods in this section were staples growing up (rather than what non-southern people think is southern food). All the recipes I have tried this far have been delicious!
I would recommend this book simply for this section alone, but the foods I have tried from other sections have been excellent too!
A table of contents without page numbers????.......2004-02-17
The most frustrating thing about this book is that the table of contents has no page numbers. This makes this book particularly difficult to use since it is categorized by region and only categorized by type of food when you get to the regional chapters which -- if you didn't already understand my frustration -- were not numbered in the table of contents. I am really glad that this was a hand-me-down because I would have hated to have paid money for it.

The Ultra Cool Parents Guide to NYC.......2000-10-30
I just returned from a week+ trip to NYC with my 9 year old and I thought that this book was very helpful. The authors describe a number of day trips to take with your child, including dining suggestions. It gives you lots of things to do in a small area and in NYC that is VERY important. I liked the notes on how to get to places on the subway and the small maps that pointed out the location of each thing they suggested for that "trip". As an out-of-towner what I found most helpful were the tips on kid friendly restaurants. There are a millions places to eat in NYC and it was nice to go to places that had been kid tested and enjoyed by adults.

Book Description
Dana Carpender has done it again -- 500 all-new recipes from snacks to desserts that the whole family will love! This time, she highlights world cuisines, including Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Mexican and other ethnic favorites. Most of these cuisines emphasize carbs, whether it's rice, pasta, or potatoes, but Dana has worked her magic to make delicious, simple low-carb versions that provide variety to the world's most popular diet.
Customer Reviews:
Not for South Beach Dieters.......2007-09-28
I gave this one star without even trying a recipe. While this book has a good variety of recipes which are "low carb", if you are following South Beach, don't buy it! It uses lots of butter, cream and fatty meats! I will be returning my copy.
Extremely Helpful!.......2006-09-28
This was my first Dana Carpenter book. I had already been introduced to the low carb way of eating, but Dana's book makes it so much more interesting! Her humor and healthy tips inspire me to be faithful. The variety of recipes expand my menu ideas considerably, and also are a springboard for recipes of my own creation.
Because I liked this book so much, I also bought Volume 1 of "500 Recipes" cookbook for myself and 3 others. This second volume, however, is my favorite. I also just purchased Dana's "How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 LBS." book, and am enjoying it very much, which I heartily recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about lo carb eating, and also to those who need motivation to continue. It is full of excellent health info.
If you need new recipe ideas, or instruction on how to eat low carb, Dana provides it all in a fun and interesting way. Dana is a great mentor on the path of a low carb lifestyle!
wonderful low carb everyday stuff.......2006-05-04
I feel that Dana is an old friend as she always adds little tips and comments every thing I have made as turned out wonderful I love her little extra comments I have all her books so far
Should have been named "Cooking for Dummies".......2006-04-17
IF you already know how to cook this book is an "insult" - it's so basic it's laughable. Plus most of the more "interesting" recipes can be found online at any of several low-carb web sites. I also found that there were editorial mistakes - like the temperature which to bake a cheescake was eliminated. And mistakes on the author's part in which she does not indicate the size pan to use - which DOES make a difference in the final outcome of any baked item. The author also uses ingredients that are HARD to come by in her recipes without giving substitutes.
All in all I was quite disappointed! But in all fairness - it would be a good "starting" cookbook for those folks who are lacking in the culinary arts.
500 More Low-Carb Recipes.......2006-03-14
Great recipes so far. I love that she now includes calorie counts.

Book Description
The author of the New York Times best-seller The Gangs of New York returns with a second volume of tales from Gotham’s underworld. In this wonderfully colorful and surprising history, Herbert Asbury expands his purview beyond the Five Corners to the entire city of New York. From Lord Cornbury, a loonily corrupt, cross-dressing British governor of colonial days, to the Broadway pickpocket who built herself a mansion in Hoboken, where she set herself up as European royalty, to prohibitionist Carry Nation’s first visit to a scornful city of saloons (and her memorable confrontation with the drunken John L. Sullivan), All Around the Town brings to vivid life a memorable range of characters, grifters, murderers, and madmen. Rediscovering a fascinating array of lost corners in the history of the city, Asbury shows that today’s tabloid headlines have nothing on the daily goings-on 150 years ago. From “The Sawing-Off of Manhattan Island” to “The Wickedest Man in New York” to “The Flour Riot of 1837,” these twenty-three lively and accessible accounts make for top-notch, eccentric popular history as told by a master.
Customer Reviews:
Not so much a sequel - its better.......2006-01-22
This book was compiled a few years after "Gangs of New York". It's a collection of New Yorker magazine articles on the topic, with different subject matter. Much more sophisticated in structure, accessible, fun in that New Yorker kind of tongue-in-cheek way. A great airplane read, you will read it all before you get to either coast.

Those alligators really do get around! Whether they're entertaining elephants, making macaroni, having headaches, or throwing tantrums, the rascally reptiles are never napping! Maurice Sendak's alphabet book will have young "readers" reciting their ABC's in no time. The three-color illustrations endear these quite quarrelsome critters to readers' hearts. Mom, Dad, and Junior are brimming with personality; the collective images create a complete picture of the nutty--yet remarkably familiar--household. Somehow, these likable lizards manage to capture the foibles and peculiarities of human nature better than many bipeds ever could. Yet beneath their very vain and sometimes shockingly spoiled surface, the friendly fanged creatures have a charm that no one can resist. Sendak, beloved author-illustrator of such classics as Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Chicken Soup with Rice, much like his green gator gang, is always getting giggles. Customer Reviews:
Delightful book, but this is the original nutshell library size (very small).......2007-02-27
Pierre, Alligators All Around, One Was Johnny, and Chicken Soup with Rice are wonderful books and beautifully illustrated. They come in three sizes--the original nutshell library size (the size of an hp ink cartridge box), the re-released hardcover nutshell library size (the size of an hp ink cartridge without the box), and the paperback set. The description for this set makes it appear it is the paperback set--it is not. It is actually the original nutshell library size and quite small. It doesn't appear that Amazon currently sells the regular paperback size, so unless you're specifically looking for a very small book, wait for the regular size.
Sweet Memories.......2006-07-08
When I read this book, I just can't help but sing the song from the Really Rosie TV special back in the 80's. (I also bought the CD.) It is a favorite of mine, of my grown children, and sure to become a favorite of their children for whom I bought it. Charming illustrations, clever content and a fun way to learn the alphabet.
An ABC book fit for wild things.......2004-09-15
Maurice Sendak's Alligators All Around: An Alphabet portrays a family of three alligators through the ups and downs of daily life in their household. Not a traditional narrative, the personalities of the alligator family emerge in a series of humorous vignettes associated with each letter of the alphabet. "D" shows the child grudgingly helping his father "doing dishes"; "G" shows the family enjoying each other's company "getting giggles"; "T" shows the child "throwing tantrums," which may be the cause for "H" showing the parents in bed with cold compresses "having headaches." Each letter receives one page, with three-color illustrations appearing in boxed panels. Sendak's unique style comes through, with the alligator parents showing shades of "wild things" and the alligator child marching across the pages like Max. Beneath the illustrations, an uppercase serif letter appears in the lower-left corner along with the associated phrase of words starting with the letter. Children will love the small size of the book (approximately 5"x7") and will notice the relationship between the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make in words.
Alligator antics.......2004-04-15
This is an alphabet book featuring alligators drawn by Maurice Sendak. Each letter has the alligators doing some activity, such as getting giggles for "g" or throwing tantrums for "t". The book is cute and not scary. It has about 60 words.
A Awesome B Book C Creativity Concoction by Sendak.......2000-07-18
Wow! This is the best alphabet book ever! With words such as "N Never Napping, O Ordering Oatmeal, P Pushing People", along with adorable pictures of the goofy alligator pulling these stunts, this book is the love of many young children. Any child who misses out on this book is missing out on a treasure!

Reliving the Magic of Disney World.......2007-05-13
A great book to compliment my photo album of our recent trip to Disney World. The pop up of the book brings alive the 3 D effect to remember our trip by. Thanks, this made an excellent souvenir for this Disney fan.
Great pop-up to "transport" you back to W.D.W........2007-01-27
I love this book. The EPCOT page just blows my mind. The engineering that went into designing that sort of pop-up is mind boggling.
The only thing I wish this book had is Disney music and more pages!
Wow! What a great book........2007-01-21

Fun preview of "the world" before our trip to Disney.......2006-02-26
I have enjoyed this pop-up book with my 3 and 6 year old children before our recent trip to Disney World. It is beautiful and well-done. It gave them a preview of what we'd see and generated many questions about our upcoming trip. It was a great way to talk to them about what to expect.
Excellent book.......2005-08-10
I bought this book as somewhat of a coffee table book, but was amazed at the illustrations and the quality of the pop up. I would highly recommend it to anyone!!

His real name is Riley B. King, but the B.B. stands, as any aficionado knows, for Blues Boy, a nickname he was given in the late 1940s when he was a disk jockey in Memphis, Tenn. Of course, he's best known as the King of the Blues to millions of fans throughout the world. At 70, B.B. King is still singing the blues and this is his story, from his childhood growing up in the Mississippi Delta, to the purchase of his first guitar at age 12, from his first real break after his appearance on Sonny Boy Williamson's King Biscuit Time radio show, to his ascent to international acclaim as America's ambassador of the blues.
Book Description
From the rural poverty of the Mississippi Delta to his celebrated position as the world's leading blues musician, B. B. King has led a remarkable life. In this riveting autobiography, he dramatizes his whirlwind adventures from the Memphis of the forties to the Moscow of the nineties with unflinching candor and sincerity--disclosing his complex relationships with women and chronicling his experience with racism, the Civil Rights movement, and the shifting politics of show business. But most of all, B. B. 's story is the story of the blues--the evolution from country acoustic to urban electric; the birth and explosion of rock 'n' roll--and B. B.' s own long but ultimately triumphant struggle for crossover success, during which he remained unwaveringly true to the music of his heart. From the rural poverty of the Mississippi Delta to his celebrated position as the world's leading blues musician, B. BLUES ALL AROUND ME: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF B.B.KING.......2007-03-20
THERE ARE MANY BLUES SINGERS FROM ROBERT JOHNSON TO THE PRESENT, BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE THEY CALLED "THE KING OF THE BLUES" THIS MAN IS A LEGEND HE IS CALLED B.B.KING. THIS POWERFUL BOOK GOES INTO THE HUMBLE BEGINNING OF RILEY B. KING AS A SHARECROPPER,THROUGH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT,RACISM TO PERFECTING THE MUSIC THAT IS HIS FIRST LOVE "THE BLUES" .HERE IS A MAN WHO CAME FROM A SIMPLE HUMBLE BEGINNING TO PERFORMING BEFORE KINGS AND QUEENS AND PRESIDENTS AND EVEN THE POPE. IF YOU HAVE SEEN B.B.KING YOU KNOW WHY HE IS CALLED THE KING OF THE BLUES, IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN HIM YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON "THE MAN" HIMSELF ALL YOU CAN DO IS READ THIS POWERFUL BOOK
read the book several times.......2005-09-06
I've read BB's book several times, maybe 5 or 6. Every time I read it I still love it. I learn something new about him every time. If you even consider yourself a fan of BB or the blues, you have to read this book. David Ritz is an awesome co-writer, keeping BB's voice in the forefront, and he just gently guides BB. He did a hell of a job with Etta James' autobiography also.
An excellent book!!
A MAN AND HIS BLUES... the great BB KING..........2004-11-03
His real name is Riley B. King, the B.B. stands for Blues Boy, and he is known as "America's ambassador of the blues". A recommended enjoyable, good read about growing up and into music, self-taught guitar, remarkable attitudes of a man who faced prejudice and hate with an even keel. A performer who went on stage even when he was suffering from a bad case of flu. B.B. King took his music to Israel, England, and Russia, and held up in stature through the lows and highs. And he loves his 'Lucille' (guitar)! David Ritz has co-authored with the King a wonderful synopsis of love, fortitude, belonging, and enthusiasm. Recommended for blues lovers or otherwise... please don't miss this splendid read. (Review based on hardcover 1996)

A blues story.......2003-05-27
A blues story
B.B. King's life is presented here in a breezy, happy go lucky style. Ostensibly an autobiography, (although if you heard any of B.B.'s interviews about the book and his amazement at some of the details that were revealed, you know David Ritz did much more than help out.) this book deals with B.B.'s childhood of amazing poverty and his eventual rise to be the "King of the Blues." Conversational in style, but revealing in detail, BLUES ALL AROUND ME works as both a personal reminiscence and as a look at the life of a black man living in America during the 20th century. Tales of racism (in the military and elsewhere), the difficulties of dealing with a less than honest music industry, and the struggle for success against these odds are all expressed in a manner that shows no true anger, rather an acceptance that these were challenges to overcome. B.B.'s personal relationships with the many women in his life is not avoided, nor his opinions of many of his contemporaries. While the selected discography is extremely disappointing, this book should be required reading for any fan of the blues, and while any autobiography has to be taken with a grain of salt, this one definitely rings true.
To really get to know the Beale Street Blues Boy..........2003-02-20
Wow, I just finished reading this biography and am truly satisfied with my reading. It's been a long time since I read a book this refreshing. Talk about honesty, passion and heart.
The last 3 chapters were especially entertaining, talking from the heart about issues generally left untouched. From page one, I couldn't put the book down.
This book really helps you understand B.B's live performances. For anyone who as seen B.B. King live sometimes gets the feeling that his performance is a routine that dates back 25 years (well, I now know it is!), but this fact doesn't bother my anymore, understanding where the man comes from, better understanding his way of doing things.
Recommended for blues fans and anyone interested in a very entertaining read.
