2 out of 5 stars Poorly Presented.......2006-04-25

This book is poorly written. There does not appear to be any presentational logic used. The same topic will be brushed upon on one page, dealt with in a more in depth fashion on another, and then brought up again later. Important points are often difficult to ascertain, obscured as they often are by more irrelevant text. ALso, different modes of presentation, such as list fashion displays of audit techniques, or other means such as various,"blue" sections, makes it difficult to study this text in a systematic manner. Then there are the review questions, which professors love to assign as weekly homework. THey are often made up of 10 part answers. A little thought about how students actually learn, rather than using a convenient presentational method based on how lazy tenured professors like to teach (or write) could make this book more useful. As it is, most of my knowledge of these topics will be gained through CPA exam reviews. SInce CPA reviews depend on the preferences of people who actually use them, I do not doubt they will be much better. PS: down with tenure.

1 out of 5 stars Very difficult to follow for first-time auditing students.......2006-04-25

This book is very confusing for beginning auditing students. This is my first auditing course and I'm having a difficult time completing the homework because I don't understand what is being asked of me. If I had previous auditing experience it might make a little more sense, but it seems like the author is repeating a lot of stuff over and over in the first few chapters without really explaining what you're supposed to be doing. It all seems very abstract, which makes it difficult to apply what you're learning to the homework. If you're looking for an indtroductory book to auditing, I would not recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars 5e might be different from past editions-reviews from others.......2005-05-07

This review is based on the 5th edition. I have used this book for ongoing reference in doing Sarbanes Oxley compliance projects. I have found it to be very solid, and includes coverage that is very much attuned to the environment we are under today in terms of complying with SOX. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Bargain at Thrice the Price.......1999-04-06

As a connoiseur of auditing texts, I found Rittenberg and Schweiger's work to be pure genius. The authors' use of real-world examples and well-placed and helpful exhibits, interspersed with the occasional comfortable aside, make this a work not to be missed. Well done, Dr. Rittenberg. Well done, Dr. Schweiger. Well done, indeed.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Excuse for a Book.......1999-03-24

Auditing: Concepts for a Changing Environment, is not only poorly written but it lacks in-depth, real life situations which makes up the auditing profession. Not only are the chapter questions mediocre at best, but after the first five chapters everything else is a review. I would advice no one to buy this book, not even the biggest accounting nerds.

Book Description

Picking up where Cod left off, an "invaluable" (Financial Times) look at the global crisis of overfishing.

Gourmands and health-conscious consumers alike have fallen for fish; last year per capita consumption in the United States hit an all-time high. Packed with nutrients and naturally low in fat, fish is the last animal we can still eat in good conscience.

Or can we?

In this vivid, eye-opening book—first published in the UK to wide acclaim and now extensively revised for an American audience—environmental journalist Charles Clover argues that our passion for fish is unsustainable. Seventy-five percent of the world's fish stocks are now fully exploited or overfished; the most popular varieties risk extinction within the next few decades.

Clover trawls the globe for answers, from Tokyo's sumptuous fish market to the heart of New England's fishing industry. He joins hardy sailors on high-tech boats, interviews top chefs whose menu selections can influence the fate of entire species, and examines the ineffective organizations charged with regulating the world's fisheries. Along the way he argues that governments as well as consumers can take steps to reverse this disturbing trend before it's too late. The price of a mouth-watering fillet of Chilean sea bass may seem outrageous, but The End of the Line shows its real cost to the ecosystem is far greater.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to know about the state of our world fishery resources.......2007-06-06

For those of you who are concerned about the state of our fisheries and declining fish populations worldwide, I would suggest a newly published book, "The End of the Line," by Charles Clover. As The Independent suggests, his book is "the maritime equivalent of Silent Spring." Clover takes the reader on an unbiased tour of many of the most important fisheries throughout the world from Africa to Iceland, offshore to nearshore. His appraisal and commentary of fishery management is candid and insightful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves trying to contemplate the disequilibrium between fishery management and sustainability. The book ends with some positive examples of fishery management of which there are sadly too few, and he has some helpful tips for all of us to do our part to ensure fish stocks for the next generation.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Informative... A Must-Read!.......2007-01-03

"The End of the Line" is a well-written, highly informative book which addresses a serious global issue.

"Imagine what people would say if a band of hunters strung a mile of net between two immense all-terrain vehicles and dragged it at speed across the plains of Africa.... left behind is a strangely bedraggled landscape resembling a harrowed field... this efficient but highly unselective way of killing animals is known as trawling... it is practiced the world over every day, from the Barents Sea in the Arctic to the shores of Antarctica and from the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the central Pacific to the temperate waters off Cape Cod."

Overfishing is a serious problem that must be addressed. The statistics are staggering. As journalist Charles Clover shows in his global exploration of the destruction caused by overfishing, we have inflicted a crisis on the oceans in a single human lifetime greater than any yet caused by pollution.

5 out of 5 stars The rape of the oceans by commercial fishing.......2006-08-22

This is one of the most important books I've read. I have purchased several copies of this book to give away. It speaks up on behalf of those denizens of the oceans that we think should belong in cans and sandwiches or pies or curries, or pet food - yielding their flavoursome goodness of Omega 3 oils - with plenty more replenishing themselves without end. I did know in the back of my head that something was wrong when we put faceless tuna into cat food and no one discusses byecatch on a can except for a "Dolphin Friendly" logo. The appalling horror of millions of tonnes of these things being hoovered up with up to 50 to even 90% of the take being discarded back to the ocean because they are not the target species is spelled out in this book along with the moribund state of just how little we as a species care for the oceans or engage in managing its most vital food resources.

As usual much of the blame falls flatly at the feet of politicians and fishing interests as well as the consumers abject ignorance that advertisers and chefs have been milking and continue to milk. When the oceans belong to us all, to enjoy recreationally - they have become the preserve of fishing interests that continue to suppress so much biodiversity. This is a story of greed gone mad with absolutely no safeguards in place by the very people who are in charge of doing anything about it.

Japan and the EEC come out as some of the most environmentally tarnished political units - the madness of the EEC fishing policy is revealed in all its glorious folly.

Tuna and swordfish, the most magnificient bony fish in the sea get a special mention along with the poor critically endgangered mega sharks that are often bycatch in tuna catches.

This is such a powerful book speaking up for dumb fish that I will try and do everything in my power to at least highlight the problem to others. So well written in this with Chapter 14 showing us some fine solutions from New Zealand - that you ought to buy this book now and share it with any of your concerned friends.

Charles Clover from the London Daily Telegraph has done a fantastic job of highlighting our superpredatory theft from the seas.

5 out of 5 stars If you love eating fish, you should buy this book!.......2006-07-26

It is a fascinating, very well written book on a subject most people forget about in spite of how important it is: the food resources of the sea. When I first saw the book I wondered how the author could make an interesting topic out of it...when I started to browse it, I discovered a great amount of information about the wonderful world of the seas, about what so many companies are doing to our resources, about the repercusions hardly anyone is aware of.
I bought it and read it immediately.
One of the best non-fiction books I have read in the last few years.

Book Description

Over the coming years we will need to move from a global culture addicted to cheap, abundant petroleum to a culture of compelled conservation, whether through government directive or market forces. The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook provides useful practical advice for preparing your family and community to make the transition.

This book takes a positive, upbeat, and optimistic view of "the Great Change," promoting the idea that it can be an opportunity to redeem our essential interconnectedness with nature and with each other. The many rifts that have grown up since oil became the world's prime commodity can be mended: between cities and their food sources; the design of the suburban built environment and its car-oriented sprawl; runaway greenhouse warming, clearing of forests and toxification of rivers, oceans, and land. Topics covered include:

Also including light-hearted, playful recipes -- some using basic, wholesome foods, some illustrating food growing or preservation, and all emphasizing organic, flavorful and locally grown produce that readily substitute one for another -- this book is about having your catastrophe and eating it too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Mind-Opening Treasure Trove.......2007-09-06

I really love this book. It approaches the end of civilization as we know it with a big, humorous, smart smile on its face. It presents such a range of ideas and facts and little-known powerful knowledge, and so much uncommon "common sense" that it manages to make me feel good about the coming mess (the "Great Change"). According to the author, Albert Bates, after the "Crude Awakening," Step 1 is to "Rebuild Civilization." By book's end, you'll reach the 12th step -- "Utopia by Morning." Lots of interesting, eclectic sidebars. Plus, the recipes are really excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro level book, full of useful advice.......2007-08-18

This book is great intro to all the issues relating to peak oil and our other looming crisis; water, food, transportation, economics, etc., with hints, tips, sidebars, recipes, quotes, so it's not really heavy going. In a fairly non-apocalyptic way, it covers all sorts of stuff, for example: bug out bags, various alternative fuels, lists of things to stockpile, ecovillages and community, humanure, chart of bean cooking times, a first aid guide. Nothing in a huge amount of depth - it's just one book; but mostly practical and down to earth information, and while I don't agree with everything (he's too optimistic about ethanol, and that compost tea will be anaerobic) on the whole it seems balanced and accurate.

For anyone who's just coming to learn about peak oil, especially in the early panic stages, I particularly recommend this book; there are so many books that will just scare and overwhelm you, while this book has a practical and less we're-all-doomed approach. If you're a peak oil old-timer and have been simplifying your life for a while it is probably all stuff you know already.

2 out of 5 stars A Readers Digest version of the book I was seeking.......2007-05-29

This is a lightweight gloss on an interesting topic. To take just one example, the chapter on food storage does not broach the concept of long-term food storage, which may turn out to be the most important topic of all when surviving a post-petroleum world. Nitrogen purging of containers is not mentioned. CO2 purging is mentioned, but not as a way of stopping oxygen-linked food deterioration, but only as a way of fumigating grains. The need for food-safe containers is mentioned, but an exact discussion of the forms of plastic (HDPE, PP, PETE, LDPE, PVC etc) is not given. The simplest web search gives more information than this book on almost every topic. Another example: a illustration is given of a solar dehydrator, but not the plans to make one, and the diagram of the dehydrator is not even sufficiently labelled so that you'd have some idea of how to make one. Again, turn to the web for proper information. Lastly, people living outside the USA will not be pleased to see everything denominated in inches, Fahrenheit, gallons and pounds. The book is essentially a primer and overview of a lot of topics without any satisfying detail. An appetizer, not a main course, the book is indeed like the "Swiss Army knife" it styles itself as, and like my largely unused Swiss army knife, it's not the tool of choice for any particular need.

3 out of 5 stars Return to pre-industrial society?.......2007-05-19

The author asserts that the world will return to a pre-industrial society as a result of peak oil, and we must be able to grow our own food, as well as be closer to nature.
I fail to see the logic that such a future is the most likely outcome of peak oil.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, REadable, and NECESSARY for our world.......2007-04-24

The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and cookbook by Albert Bates is an intriguing and well constructed look at what every citizen in the oil addicted world should know and begin to move toward if any kind of survival is possible when oil is no longer readily available. Bates begins by giving convincing evidence that the availability of plenty of oil and gas is not in the world's future. But the book is not a dooms day end of the world account. After explaining the supply/demand situation for the world relying mainly on oil and gas as the key source of energy, he then goes on to spend most of the book detailing ways in which the average consumer can begin to do things in a daily way that will make everyone less dependent on petroleum as the main energy source. The book details everything from creating one's own energy supplies to food preparation and storage to the way to save in transportation. The margins of each page of the book contains menus of dishes that help to form a more energy efficient approach to cooking. The book is well written with good explanations of approaches the author feels are key to beginning the change to living in a world without abundant petroleum supplies

Book Description

Students of conservation encounter some of the most complex issues on our planet. The resolution of existing problems become more complex when humans create further stresses on the natural balance. Moulton and Sanderson brought the challenging issues in wildlife conservation into greater clarity in Wildlife Issues in a Changing World. The Second Edition of this definitive reference focuses more closely on the causes of wildlife issues. The examination of Jared Diamond's "Evil Quartet" (the four principal causes of extinction) provides a framework for categorizing and resolving these issues. The authors encourage the use of the scientific method basis for resolution - especially where environmental laws have failed. The three new chapters provide further counterpoints to preconceived notions. A two-part history of wildlife in the U.S. shows how wildlife had already been decimated by the year 1900. "Can Humans Manage Wildlife?" questions efforts to revive endangered species, acts which may inadvertently jeopardize the survival of other life. Viewing the natural order from prehistoric times to the present, Wildlife Issues in a Changing World, Second Edition gives students and instructors an all-encompassing introduction to past relations between humans and nature; explorations of current threats to species and their habitats; and recent "novel solutions," where humanity and industry have made adjustments to protect the natural order. Professionals will also find invaluable reminders of the importance of their work - the continuation and endurance of wildlife everywhere on Earth.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A textbook, with pluses and minuses.......2006-09-30

Wildlife Issues in a Changing World is a textbook on... wildlife issues! There is an emphasis on the United States, but there are a good number of international examples as well. I really like the chapters on the Evil Quartet, what is wildlife, and what are wildlife issues. As I use this book in my courses, I depend on it as a source of wildlife issue examples, supplemented with DVDs and videos (to "bring" wildlife into the classroom).

It is, in general, a hard book for students. I don't mean hard in terms of the materials. It is well-written, and rather easy to read. It is hard to use to study for tests. I tell students that it compliments the lectures, and doesn't repeat them. Students tend to complain that it has too many examples, so the "themes" that they are tested on are difficult to find.

I still find it the best text for my purposes for a general course with primarily non-natural resource students. I like it for its price as well.

    Book Description

This important book offers a revolutionary approach to solving a range of social problems--drug use, smoking, unsafe sex, and overpopulation--by applying marketing techniques and concepts to change behavior. For example, it shows that at-risk teenagers are consumers who decide whether or not to "buy" safe sex practices. This successful approach is based on Alan R. Andreasen's more than twenty years of experience in consulting, teaching, and research with social marketing programs around the world.

Andreasen shows that effective social change starts with a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, and perceptions of the target consumer--who has ultimate control over the outcomes. The book offers a detailed explanation of how to design a step-by-step program that will move the customer from ignorance and indifference to action and ultimately maintenance of that action. Marketing Social Change offers a wealth of information for developing an effective social marketing plan.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good basic book on social marketing.......2004-10-10

This book provides a very good overview of social marketing. I use this as a text book in a graduate course that I teach and find it useful in giving students a clear idea of how social marketing relates to the broader topic of nonprofit marketing, without requring them to wade through all of the additional information that a more general marketing textbook would offer. Author Alan Andreason is a leading thinker on the topic of social marketing and has organized this relatively short book in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to separate the preparatory work from the actual execution of social marketing plans.

The one complaint I have about this book, and the reason that I have not awarded it five stars, is that the examples used are less than exciting and I find that I need to supplement this book with additional titles so that my students get the bigger picture of how social marketing principles play out in various cultures around the world, not just in the United States. For those who are looking to expand their understand of social marketing in the developing world and in emerging economies, see also Marketing the Public Sector by Seymour Fine. Sadly, this great book is a bit dated, as it was published in 1992, but balanced with this Andreason book (or a comparable book by Philip Kotler) you will be able to give yourself a solid grasp of the topic.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book.......2002-07-17

This is the best book to give you grounding in social marketing. It also is a handy reference that you'll go back to again and again. It's well written and very accessible.

    Book Description

Virginia Beahan and Laura McPhee explore the ways people interact with the landscapes in which they live. For more than ten years they have traveled the world--from Iceland to Costa Rica, Sri Lanka to New York--uncovering in their photographs a complex weave of human attitudes, both humble and arrogant, in the face of natural elements. As Rebecca Solnit writes in her introduction, "Their images show us a world in metamorphosis, where categories melt and mutate. . . . This is a world where natural sites become shrines and shrines become works of art that represent the landscape; where stone is carved into both sculptures of bodies and homes for bodies; where water is sometimes holy water and sometimes for irrigating crops."

In Costa Rica, for example, healing waters are enshrined in frescoed concrete; in a Hawaiian garden, mangoes and oranges are protected against the cold in brown, paper bag jackets; in Iceland, children play in hot springs created by the runoff of a power plant; in Las Vegas, an artificial volcano erupts on cue. Each of Beahan and McPhee's extraordinary images captures a point of intersection where natural and constructed worlds collide. Their work creates a powerful visual map of the forces of mythology and culture at work in the landscape.

In 1987, Laura McPhee and Virginia Beahan began their photographic work together. Through the use of a large-format camera they are able to jointly participate in this unique collaboration—a process discussed with humor and warmth in John McPhee's afterword, "Laura and Virginia." They have received support for their photography from numerous sources including the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the New England Foundation for the Arts, the Polaroid Corporation, and the Turner Foundation, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful; redefines landscape photography for me.......1999-06-07

The photos of this book have the technical excellence of Ansel Adams pictures (except they are not B+W). But they are not vistas of pristine, pretty National parks that Adams shot; here the hand of man is all too present.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful and wondrous!.......1999-01-24

Beahan and McPhee have eloquently captured both our enmeshment with nature, and Her attempts to hold fast. Photos so beautiful you catch your breath.

        5 out of 5 stars A readable textbook.......2006-12-02

Academic libraries are in a state of flux, as they try to maintain their relevance in an increasingly electronic world. In many ways, library culture has been a thing apart within the university or college setting, but as access to scholarly works, research requests, and professors themselves becomes more and more possible over the Internet, printed works and face-to-face meetings are rarer.

Librarians, too, are trying to find their place in this new academic world. A good number are working as tenured faculty, instead of as staff as in the recent past, with the need to do their own research. In a world where all information appears to be right at hand, new librarians must learn how to show researchers -- students, professors, and others -- the best ways in which to find information that is pertinent, but also how to avoid data that is downright wrong. They must learn about the research tools and the media in which they are presented so that they can understand the differences, advantages, and disadvantages, while not letting the library itself become anachronistic. They must also learn how to let their users know how important it is to take advantage of their knowledge and skills

Students of library and information studies who choose academic librarianship as their career path will be considering the advantages and disadvantages of tenure and how best to fit into the changing dynamics within academia, along the way to making data and available to potential users. Budd's book is a very good starting point. He discusses the old and the new we have now, and the possible changes in the future. His view is positive, of course, but not naive. In order to remain relevant, both libraries and librarians must appeal to their users or eventually they will no longer be a necessary part of education. This would be a tragedy, for as all students learn, not everything is on the Internet, and not all of what is there is good information.

5 out of 5 stars Discusses the Major Issues Facing Libraries.......2005-08-10

Academic libraries are in a state of change. New technologies such as the Internet are creating both opportunities and confusion. Combine this with broader context of educational needs, the explosion in very expensive scholarly periodicals, the ever present budgetary problems, and the profusion of remote campuses. All of these are combining to force change upon the library system.

This book provides both an analysis of the changes that are occurring, but also the ways libraries are facing these changes. The book is suitable for use as a text in library and information science courses as well as an introduction for new professionals and academic administrators.
