Book Description

Josh Bernstein, host of The History Channel's hit series Digging for The Truth, takes readers beyond the cameras for an even closer look at his adventures through some of the most intriguing, remote, and physically challenging locations on the planet as he explores the world's greatest ancient mysteries.

No location is too dangerous, no terrain too rough, no culture too exotic for explorer and survival expert Josh Bernstein. With his unique hands-on approach, he travels the globe, seeking answers to some of the most enigmatic mysteries of the ancient world. Digging for the Truth shares Josh's personal stories, journals, and insights, revealing the risks and dangers of what went on behind the scenes in shooting the show, and the fascinating details about what he uncovers along each adventure. Readers are right in the action as he:
• Discovers who built Egypt's pyramids and learns what secrets may be buried below the Sphinx.
• Follows the trail of the Lost Ark of the Covenant to the remote monasteries and churches of Ethiopia.
• Explores the journey of a potential Lost Tribe of Israel and examines DNA evidence that could make or break their claim.
• Visits the ancient site of Stonehenge, witnesses a Druid ceremony, and learns what purpose the stone circles may have served.
• Sails a Viking ship on a quest to determine if the Vikings landed in the New World five hundred years before Columbus.
• Lives with a remote and mostly naked tribe in the Amazon to search for hidden cities and learn the fate of one of the world's great explorers.

Readers will have access to all the inside details that viewers never see—everything from food poisoning and spider bites to the logistical challenges of shooting in some of the most remote places on earth. Complete with four-color photographs, Digging for the Truth will appeal to fans of the show as well as armchair travel and adventure readers.

Maybe I was looking for information about archaeology, but what I received was a non-stop self-aggrandizement of the author. To be honest, I have not been able to get through the whole thing yet, but it's only because I was so disappointed in the part I have read.

4 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes of a good tv show........2007-09-12

I really enjoyed this as a TV show when it was on the history channel and was pleased to see a 'behind the scenes' book. For those not familiar with the show, it is different from the usual talking heads feed you facts cable show, because the host really seems to get out and enjoy the work. Scrambling through ruins and up mountains to try and bring the viewer to the site really ads to the Indianna Jones sense of adventure brought by the cowboy hat, don't call it a fedora, wearing host.

This book ads to the serries by looking behind the scenes. Explaining the discomfort of lugging gear litterally over a glacer or dealing with grumpy officials in order to bring the show to the screen. If you've ever done filming or outdoor work, you know how this can go and Bernstien confirms with an almost gleeful sense of fun, that there were almost as many adventures behind the camera as were depicted on film.

If there's a down side to this book it is the nagging feeling that Bernstein isn't being entirely honest with us. Not about the big things but the small ones in his own life. He says he comes from the middle class of New York, but if you know the area and realize he is talking about family homes in the Hamptons and Bedford Hills, Westchester, vacation camps in Aruba and years of study in Israel, you realize he comes from money and either doesn't want to admit that or doesn't realize it. By the time the book has him worrying about ice storms in the alps while the producer is trying to get 'the shot' and everyone else is trying to survive, you're captivated by his style but that early misstep is an ugly distraction early on that stop this from being a 5 star for me. I kept reading and asking myself "Doesn't he know how lucky he is? does he take this for granted?" Anthony Bourdaine in his autobiography admitted early he came from money, got it out of the way and you never gave it another look. Bernstien will hopefully learn from the older tv presenter/turned writers for his next book. There will be another one, right?

5 out of 5 stars Digging for the Truth.......2007-05-18

The book is an interesting and fun look at the series and some of the behind the scenes adventure and tedium that go into making the show. It's a pleasure to read. Josh Bernstein is an explorer and adventurer combining the scientific expeditions of the great age of exploration with the showmanship of Hollywood. This book is great by itslef and an excellent compliment to the TV series.

If you liked the show, the book will give you deeper insight on what goes on behind the scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Real World Geography.......2006-10-15

I like how the book explored Urban Issues and also how it had the ArcMap exercises at the end of each chapter.

The book was very informative and offered many solutions to why certain urban issues occur.

Even more relevant, were the ArcMap exercises. The ArcMap exercises significantly helped in my ability to use ArcMap. This is crucial because I am a geography student and going through the exercises educated me more about real world topics while using ArcGIS.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested with Urban Issues and want to learn more about GIS.

This is book was very informative, well written, and much more useful than all the other books that I have read that pertain to Urban Issues/GIS.

5 out of 5 stars Study urban with a new approach.......2006-06-03

I was very impressed by the authors broad scope of knowledge on urban phenomenon in both developed and developing countries. The way they introduce various theories in urban geography by incorporating comparative case studies on LA, Chicago, and Mexico City makes the material more concrete to non-urban geographers. The authors systematically walk through the definition, components, dynamics, problems, and planning of urban system. This would be an ideal material for a graduate level class in addition to the undergraduate level it was designed for. The exercises coming with the book provide excellent coverage of the GIS techniques necessary for urban studies. They are closely related to the topic of the book and include some creative use of GIS, such as validating central place theory or modeling neighborhood transition with Markov chains in ArcGIS. The GIS approach is a big complement to the statistics and econometrics used in traditional urban researches.

    3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-07-02

There was way too much math in this book. Many formulas were derived, substuted, etc so that the ready needed a thorough understanding of calculus and trigonometry to fully appreciate and understand. I needed a more basic understanding and interpretation of the data for taking the ASBOG exam. The practice problems would have been helpful if the solutions were included, but they were not.

5 out of 5 stars VR Excursions Landfill Research Review........2000-11-11

VRX is interactive environmental education software that helps undergraduate students learn by performing realistic field research without leaving the classroom. The theme of the program is to "Learn Science by Doing Science", and each of the three virtual worlds that the student explores allows the student to perform several research projects. The program includes a CD-ROM and 200-page workbook. The three virtual reality worlds include a landfill, a nuclear waste repository and coal power. The pedagogical premise is that the students learn by questioning. Each research topic prompts the student to think about posing a question and then trying to answer it by following the scientific method.

The introduction in the workbook is excellent, it provides four sections as a resource for the students. They include: Doing Science, Learning Science; What's the Question?; Who's Responsible for Teaching and Learning; and Choose a Pathway to Learning. Each provides valuable information to the undergraduate student on how to conduct research and learn from it, how to work with your professor and taking charge of your own learning.

The introduction to each individual research section provides a link between the students' daily lives and the topic being researched, which connects the student to the research and makes the work mean something to the student on a personal level.

The easy to use CD-ROM features a computer-generated landfill with groundwater, leachate and gas monitoring wells, analytical instruments for collection of samples and real time analytical parameters. The workbook provides the lesson activities along with tables for data compilation by the student, background information, and additional prior knowledge information to be used in each research project.

The opening frame shows a virtual office with an extensive library of reference materials on the bookshelf to the left and a Simulation Selector to the right. It also features login feature that requires the student to login to begin the simulations.

The library includes easy to understand text on use of the instruments, landfill construction, solid waste laws, landfill gas, landfill leachate, geology and geographic maps which provide information needed to successfully complete the program. The simulation selector provides the student access to the three virtual worlds.

The landfill VRX main screen includes a plane view map with locations of the roads and various monitoring wells, a navigable windshield view of the landfill that allows the student to "drive" the landfill roads to reach the monitoring wells. This screen also provides a running total of fieldwork costs based on the amount of time the program is in use by the student or team.

After arriving at a monitoring well the student clicks on one of several analytical instruments to obtain realistic data from the wells. The data is then used in conjunction with the workbook to construct a groundwater elevation map, determine ground water flow direction, contaminate load and contaminate migration and potential risk of contamination to drinking water wells.

The program encompasses 5 of the 7 Earth System Education Understandings and makes strong use of number 4, that the earth is composed of the interacting subsystems of water, rock, ice, air and life.

As both a student and an instructor, I found the program interesting, scientifically accurate and up to date with current rules and regulations pertaining to landfills. Students learn better by seeing the subject matter and by performing the subject matter as the program terms it "learning by doing". This program provides the students with the opportunity to learn by doing either in groups or as individuals, in a time frame that allows the instructor to perform high quality science in a short period of time and at a very low cost.

      4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but NOT a how-to manual........2005-12-29

This is an excellent book describing the various life forms in a drop of pond water. It may well serve to make your child interested in using microscopes. In addition, there are a couple of pages about Anthony van Leeuwenhoek, who first made and described a microscope and what he could see with it.

But if your child is the owner of a new microscope, I recommend the Usborne book "The World of the Microscope" which will give you ideas for making your own slides and give tips for using the microscope.

For early-mid elementary aged kids, I also recommend "Greg's Microscope", which is a level 3 early reader that follows a young boy who yearns for a microscope, finally gets one, and learns to use it. THAT was the book that got my daughter to decide she wanted a microscope for Christmas!

4 out of 5 stars The best for young beginners.......2005-12-01

I spent about half of my childhood staring down the end of a microscope. This book is by far the best introduction to microsopy for children. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the projects are such that almost anyone with a mud puddle or pond nearby can do them. It's hard to compete with video games but if your child has any interest in sciecne then this book, along with the tools that come with any microscope set, will open up an entire world of fun and learning.

        Book Description

The popularity of geographic information system (GIS) software as a tool in the social and physical sciences is growing rapidly. These three modular investigation guides let even novice users tap the power of ArcView® GIS to explore, manipulate, and analyze large data sets. Carefully designed and class tested, the guides emphasize the visualization, analysis, and multimedia integration capabilities inherent to GIS, while minimizing the need to master a complex software package. Exploring Water Resources make the nuts and bolts of using ArcView® GIS transparent to your students. By focusing on teaching with GIS rather than teaching about it, you can incorporate GIS easily into homework, discussions, or lab sessions. This flexible teaching resource motivates and enables your students to ?learn by doing? as they use a full complement of GIS capabilities. EXPLORING TROPICAL CYCLONES: GIS INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE EARTH SCIENCES complements any introductory course in meteorology, oceanography, physical geography, natural hazards, Earth sciences, atmospheric science, and Earth systems science. The guide leads students through a set of exercises in which they are asked to explore, analyze, and then elaborate on the information extracted from a robust GIS dataset using ArcView®, the dominant GIS software tool in the school and college market. The GIS information has been preprocessed into maps and legends, and some ArcView procedures have been automated so students can focus on the science content. Extensive classroom testing at both the college and high school levels shows that students have little difficulty using the ArcView data sets to perform the exercises.

Thank goodness I found this book before I started teaching a class on Oceanography! "Exploring the Oceans" was not only a clear and well thought out book but it was clearly written by someone who understands children. The book is riddled with fun and educational activities that work exptremely well for kinistetic learners. it was organized into managable chapters that allowed the students to focus on a cohesive set of ideas while previewing the concepts to come. A wonderful tool for getting kids excited about science and the ocean.

I bought this as a Christmas present for a map-loving church student of mine. I guess that maybe I didn't pay close enough attention to the style of the book when I ordered it, because when it arrived, I was dismayed to find that it wasn't exclusive to map reading and functioned more as a text book from school. Among topics it covers are orienteering and reading weather and oceanography maps.

However, my intended recipiant was more than thrilled to receive the book. He said that he's studying the same stuff at school and he loves it. He could hardly put it down in order to go through the church service. It was engaging and insightful, he said, and that's saying a lot coming from a kid who's ADD and hates to read. I recommend this product.
