Book Description
Over the last decade, the study of cycles as a model for the earth's changing climate has become a new science.
Earth Systems Science is the basis for understanding all aspects of anthropogenic global change, such as chemically forced global climate change. The work is aimed at those students interested in the emerging scientific discipline.
Earth Systems Science is an integrated discipline that has been rapidly developing over the last two decades. New information is included in this updated edition so that the text remains relevant.
This volume contains five new chapters, but of special importance is the inclusion of an expanded set of student exercises.
The two senior authors are leading scientists in their fields and have been awarded numerous prizes for their research efforts.
* First edition was widely adopted
* Authors are highly respected in their field
* Global climate change, integral to the book, is now one of the most important issues in atmospheric sciences and oceanography

Book Description
Oceans account for 50% of the anthropogenic CO
2 released into the atmosphere. During the past 15 years an international programme, the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), has been studying the ocean carbon cycle to quantify and model the biological and physical processes whereby CO
2 is pumped from the ocean's surface to the depths of the ocean, where it can remain for hundreds of years. This project is one of the largest multi-disciplinary studies of the oceans ever carried out and this book synthesises the results. It covers all aspects of the topic ranging from air-sea exchange with CO
2, the role of physical mixing, the uptake of CO
2 by marine algae, the fluxes of carbon and nitrogen through the marine food chain to the subsequent export of carbon to the depths of the ocean. Special emphasis is laid on predicting future climatic change.
Book Description
The circulation and interactions of major elements such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, oxygen, and hydrogen are critical for the maintenance of the earth's ecosystems. Human activities including agriculture, industry, and urbanization alter element interactions and contribute to major environmental problems ranging from climate change and depletion of the ozone layer to acidification of soils to the destruction of coral reefs.
Interactions of the Major Biogeochemical Cycles is a new scientific assessment of element interactions in the biosphere. It provides an up-to-date review of biogeochemistry and its effects on earth's systems, with leading experts in biogeochemical cycling in atmospheric, land, freshwater, and marine environments offering chapters that summarize and synthesize information in each discipline.
The book opens with chapters on cross-cutting issues that have significance in understanding global change effects and their potential management. These chapters address:
* trends in element interactions in response to global change
- the effects of natural disturbances
- new approaches and methods for advancing our understanding of element interactions
- the potential for managing element interactions to address major environmental issues
Book Description
Providing the basic framework for investigating global change and its implications for life on Earth, Biogeochemical Cycles is a comprehensive and accessible examination of this complex and fascinating subject. The opening chapters present the scientific and mathematical fundamentals needed for the study of biogeochemical cycles, such as chemical thermodynamics and differential equations. The remaining chapters investigate the global cycles of the five key nutrient elements -- P, C, N, S, and O -- and examine their mathematical and computer model simulations. The text emphasizes techniques for finding and organizing data on the distribution of elements in the Earth system (including the estimation of missing data), the rational development of box models of biogeochemical cycles, and the uses and limitations of linear numerical models to simulate inherently nonlinear biogeochemical cycles. To give student hands-on experience, the authors have developed a DOS-based computer program entitled BOXES. This program, included with the book, offers a user-friendly environment for constructing numerical models of biogeochemical cycles and avoids detailed numerics. An invaluable teaching tool, BOXES allows students and professors to work interactively in the classroom as each of the cycles is explored, and gives students the opportunity to develop their own scenarios for global change outside the classroom.

Book Description
Nearly two-thirds of the world's population live in Asia, and many countries in that region are currently undergoing very rapid industrial, agricultural and economic development. The Framework Convention on Climate Change constrains developed countries with regard to their future emissions of greenhouse gases, but recognizes the special needs of developing countries. There is growing appreciation of the ways in which developing countries in the Asian region both contribute to global changes (by altering biogeochemical pathways and cycles) and are themselves affected by those changes. This volume uses the intellectual efforts and findings of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) community to provide the first integrated analysis of the interactions between global change and Asian change, giving particular attention to China's role. The book will be of interest to readers in a wide range of academic disciplines (natural sciences and socio-economic) and for those involved in national and international policy development relevant to global change.

Book Description
The interactions of biogeochemical cycles influence and maintain our climate system. Land use and fossil fuel emissions are currently impacting the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur on land, in the atmosphere, and in the oceans.
This edited volume brings together 27 scholarly contributions on the state of our knowledge of earth system interactions among the oceans, land, and atmosphere. A unique feature of this treatment is the focus on the paleoclimatic and paleobiotic context for investigating these complex interrelationships.
* Eight-page colour insert to highlight the latest research
