Book Description
With revised material and new exercises based on ArcGIS version 9, this updated work acquaints geographers and GIS professionals with the principles of GIS as it teaches the mechanics of using ArcGIS software. Conceptual material is followed by scripted software exercises. Necessary GIS skills are presented in a variety of areas--map symbology, data overlay, map projection, and data conversion--as the making of maps and the analysis of geographic data is conceptualized. Spatial modeling exercises using the Model Builder technology of ArcGIS version 9 are also provided. Other topics covered include organizing data, planning a GIS project, creating derived data, and presenting results.

ArcGIS.......2007-09-28
The Book is perfect. I received activation and registration from the publisher the next business day for starting use the software. I am perfectly satisfy with the product.
Worthwhile.......2007-09-14
Very through tutorial. Successfully completing the lessons in this book would probably be worth 4 semester units if it were a college level course.
It can be a little obtuse at times therefore 4 stars not 5.
The perfect guide to learn ArcGIS.......2007-08-27
Complete, easy to use and with a lot of color illustration step by step, the best guide for a software i have ever read...
Not with Vista.......2007-08-10
This is a good book for learning ArcGIS. Just don't expect to run the provided software, ArcVIEW 9.1, on Windows Vista. Some features work fine, others crash the program.
Echo Prior .......2007-07-02
An earlier comment reported, "it doesn't address theory of GIS programs in general that well, and I felt like my hand was being held a little too much in some things." I certainly agree. The book is simply a series of examples. The examples are repetitive in part. There is very little explanation. Using up 10 pages to demonstrate drag-and-drop functions is really not necessary.

Good for AM portion of PE Exam and PM portion of Geotechnical.......2006-09-26
Even though Index is not that great like CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual, you can still find valuable examples and basic concepts that PE Exam requires.
Best of Luck.
Excellent Resource.......2000-11-18
I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.
From a Civil/Geological Engineering student's view..........2000-05-03
* Poor index - no detail * Good detail in text on subjects covered * Has some errors in the chapter on flownets * Disjointed in discussion of compaction * Good for students with little to no soil mechanics background
Book Description
This concise introduction to environmental science uses basic and easily comprehendible scientific laws, principles, and concepts to help students understand environmental and resource problems and possible solutions to these problems. It is a shorter alternative to Miller's LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT (which is 864 pages long). It includes many full-color illustrations and photographs and a writing style that is clear, personal, and lively. Extensive reviewing by hundreds of experts and Miller's careful research covering more than 10,000 sources ensure the text's accuracy and currency. The book's 412 illustrations are designed to present complex ideas in understandable ways and to relate learning to the real world. During the early 1970's, Miller's texts helped shape and define the environmental science course. Since 1975 Miller's books have been the most widely used environmental science texts in the United States and the world. His books have been published in five languages and have been used by more than two million students.

Environmental Science/Tenth Edition.Excellent condition. No highlighting, torn pages or other marks. Sealed CD (Interactive Concepts in Environmental Science) included with book.
A great text for teaching Environmental Science.......2006-05-05
I began teaching with Miller's thicker text "living in the environment" but found that the main material was covered by this thinner and less expensive version. The graphics are helpful and the students enjoy reading the material as it is presented in an accessible and applicable fashion. The guest essays and case studies are from some of the top names speaking at conferences and so students are getting some really current views and information. Although there is not much of a lab book or teacher text-- there are plenty of other sources for field work and activity inspiration. The students also liked the website for activities and practice problems.
Excellent from multiple excellent thoughts ..........2006-03-01
Thyler Miller's books (I have 5 of them) are always the source of inspiration for me. I started reading his book when I took my Environmental Health Class for my Master of Public Helath Program.
The contents are clear, concise, correct, courtesy and full with critical thouught that has facilitated my curiosity to know more and more ....

explains issues like population growth and global warming.......2006-02-25
Miller stresses the intricate interrelationships with the Earth's environment. Vital issues like population growth and its impact on the environment are gone into. Here, there is perhaps cautious optimism. But only if we as a species moderate our growth rate (maybe even turn it negative!) and resource consumption.
There is a natural flow from this issue to a discussion about global warming. The scientific basis for concern is explained, and the evidence for warming presented. While not absolutely conclusive, it is seen as very strong. In fact, in the 5 years since the book came out, even more evidence has appeared to indicate a continuing and possibly accelerating trend. Miller also suggests several ways that global warming might be slowed.

Customer Reviews:
Uneven material.......2006-11-28
This book provides a fair introduction to geology with fairly clear diagrams and introduction to basics such as geological time scale and plate tectonics. The book tries to emphasize the practical side of geology: what can be seen and picked up. The introduction to common minerals was perhaps not as practical as I'd hoped, for some of the minerals without picture and just a description of chemical structure, hardness, and gravity I could not identify them. The information level was uneven: "a backpack full of rocks can be heavy" to arcane (The chemical reaction with feldspar to produce clay minerals). The section on different rock types was well done, but the section of mapping didn't seem practical (I couldn't really map a bed of coal). I think this book might be best if used with a very local or state geology guide.
Couldn't Put The Book Down!Great Book!.......2005-10-13
Dougal Dixon has written a wonderful book with detailed
discriptions suited for both the beginner and those already into Geology. This book is a perfect learning tool for all ages.
Perfect for education as well as recreational activilties.
I highly recommmend this intellegent, entertaining and well
written book.
Excellent Book for the Beginning Geologist.......2004-08-07
This is a wonderful book for the beginning geologist or anyone interested in earth sciences. It presents the fundamental concepts of geology in a way that is accessible to the non-specialist, but without being oversimplified or condescending. It's full of lots of great pictures, and the best part of the book is the section where it tells you how to collect and label specimens of rock yourself. People of any age interested in science, especially go out and get grubby do it yourself science, will find this book an excellent addition to their libraries.
Nice book for the beginner.......2000-07-05
I have the habit of buying anything with geology, paleontology, history, etc. in the title, sometimes without thought to where I'm at with my knowledge base. This was one of those times! The book is a lovely, well illustrated, practical guide to geology for the beginner. Much of what the authors dedicate a single paragraph or page to I have had whole courses in already, so needless to say, I was not quite as enthused over the material as a new comer to the field might be. Certainly for the beginner, especially the Junior High natural science enthusiast, this would be a wonderful gift. It might even make a good text for a high school natual science course, as it covers considerable information on the earth sciences. I plan on giving my copy to a close friend with children interested in these subjects.
Great book. Good for beginners........1999-05-16
Today we were at 12000 feet looking into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and we decided we needed a book. Any book. A good book. A book that keeps you reading. The Practical Geologist was just the book! We read all night, and the night's not over yet! We learned about geology, and also came a little closer to God. I highly recommend it! p.s. I used to work for Borders.

Book Description
ArcGIS is the newest and most powerful GIS technology from ESRI, and this comprehensive reference teaches Geographic Information System (GIS) technology users the concepts and methods for its customization. As ArcObjects are the building blocks of COM-based ArcGIS software, GIS professionals are given an introduction to basic object-oriented programming concepts and the classes, properties, and methods that make ArcObjects unique. Also stressed are the use of Visual Basic for Applications and the use of ArcObjects to modify the ArcGIS interface, change its basic operations, and create entirely new functionality. Included are two large-scale, fold-up object diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Getting to Know ARC OBJECTS.......2007-08-13
This book exceeded my expectations as a beginner. It is simple to follow yet stimulating enough to maintain my interest. Persons without experience and needing to do customization will find this extremely useful. Recommended for young entrants in the field of GIS who are focused on application development.
Save your money: Ditch the ESRI class and buy this book instead.......2007-02-21
I've read the ESRI ArcObjects course material and I have to say that this book is far better. I'm not a programmer, I just need to occasionally write code at work. For the last project that I was working on, I dug through the ESRI coursework and then a friend at work mentioned that they had this book. I asked to borrow it, and I must say that I'm impressed.
The examples were excellent, and the book took the time to actually explain what was going on. Using this book I had a working core for the program in about two hours, with no previous experience. I dug through the ESRI coursework for about six hours and came up fairly empty handed. I've ordered a copy of this for work and now I've ordered one for home use (which is kind of like unpaid work). The examples work with ArcGIS 9.1, which is nice. I haven't tried them in 9.2, but I have no reason to doubt that the book would still be relevant.
With a price this low, the book is a good deal. Even if it only helps you learn a few new tricks with ArcObjects, it's certainly worth the price.
good beginners book.......2007-02-20
This book really helped me understand the underlying principles of programming with VBA and ArcObjects. I found it very useful, the best ESRI affiliated book I have used yet.
Examples still works at ArcGIS 9.1.......2006-09-20
Even though we are on ArcGIS 9.1, all the examples in this book still worked, since ESRI assures that the interfaces will still work from release to release. The exercises cover the basics of simple applications: adding tools, building forms with drop down lists, programmatically adding layers, setting symbolization and changing the layout. There was also a useful example of summing a field for records in a feature class. The method with VBA allows adding buttons and drop downs and storing them into the map document. This would also work to create a template, but would not be used to create a Dynamic Link Library ( DLL. ). There was an introduction to the object model diagrams, but I did not feel confident that I could use those diagrams to find out how to use new objects not covered in the book. The good counter to that is the many scripts available on the ESRI's web sites.
Great for graphics, a bit weak for tables.......2006-02-01
As a former MapInfo user, I miss everything there is about the ease of programming there. Not the author's fault of course, but the point is that ArcObjects is not that easy for novice programmers. This book makes a valiant attempt to plug the gap (see the impenetrable ESRI documentation to see how vast the gap is!) and generally succeeds. The graphics side is well covered, the explanations are sound and I'm generally happy with the book. My only criticism, from a researcher viewpoint, is that table manipulation is not covered as well as other sections. This is the section that covers creating and updating fields. It seems rushed and akwardly placed in the last chapter or so. I'd have liked more on that, but there again, this book was written for a wider audience than me. Recommended.

A quick and easy review of the foundations of well logging.......2001-07-10
This is the appropriate source for non petrophycisists needing a quick catch up with the basic principles of well logging and well log interpretation. There are no unnecessary details on tools design and performance. There are many useful examples and some interesting case studies are also included. I recommend it to any geoscientist willing to understand the basics. An updated edition with last generation logs would make the fifth star.
Book Description
This short book explains hot water heating (hydronic) controls and circuits from the perspective of power suppy, switch, and load. The book starts with a simple control circuit and builds to multiple zone circuits. It explains that adding a control panel simplifies a job rather than making it more complex. The book then looks at various panels, building from an aquastat relay to multiple-zone and multiple-purpose panels.
Customer Reviews:
A little too basic.......2006-02-27
This book would make a good school book to show kids the basics of electrical circuits.
It unfortunately is based on obsolete technology for the hydronic controls and has no controls for heat pumps. It's based around boilers etc.
Excellent for the novice.......2005-05-18
I am a complete novice when it comes to hydronic controls. Basically, I'm an owner-builder who decided to install radiant heat. Since I know nothing about setting it up, I rely on elementary books and materials from the internet to gain knowledge.
Installing the PEX tubing in the slab was easy enough as was attaching the tubing to the underside of the second floor. I had intended to hire someone to finish the set-up but when finances became tight I decided to have a go at it.
I'm not done yet but this book has given me confidence to continue on.
way too simple.......2005-01-06
This book is far too basic. Almost all of the book is
about very simple electrical concepts; the "hydronic
controls" portions are only examples of these general
concepts. I was greatly disappointed with the book --
most manufacturer's web sites have much better and
more understandable descriptions.
This is a worthless book on Radiant Floor Heating.......2004-10-13
This book is totally worthless if you are hoping to understand and design the control systems for radiant floor heating. I wish I could get my money back. The book description by the publisher and the Editorial Reviews are misleading at best. I wish there had been a buyer review at the time I placed my order with Amazon--I would have passed on this book. Avoid.
Too basic to be of use.......2002-11-21
I was very disappointed in this book. It says right on the front cover that it's "A Contractor's easy guide to hydronic Controls, Wiring, and Wiring Diagrams". If a contractor needs to refer to this basic of information, I don't think I want them working in my house. I learned everthing in this book in High School. Don't waste your time unless you have no idea about how electricity works
