Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book is simply the best nonlinear FEA book out there. While most other books stop at the Total and Updated Legrangian formulations, this book goes way beyond that and teaches you some really advanced FEA techniques. The treatment of material is thourough and meticulous. Unlike what some other reviewers have said, this book is NOT a bunch of research papers thrown together, but is very well organized with consistent notation and timely explanations. This book is ideal for self study as well as reference for scientists and engineers. However, watch out for some typos that may throw you off-track. This is the only complaint I have about the book.

The approach taken by this book is neither too mathematical, which makes the subject untractable, nor too engineering-lized, which missed out important insights. I am an engineer with a master degree in mechanical engineering. I found this book very readable, given enough coffine and a good mood. The subjects covered are self-contained.

However this book needs further improvement to be called classic. First, contact-impact chapter is palely presented. LS-DYNA theory manual provides a more complete description on this subject. Secondly, typos need to be reduced. Thirdly, the language is somewhat boring. Fourthly, I would like to see a Latex-ized version of this book.

This has got to be the best book out there now on how to construct nonlinear FE. For me, the book was worth it even if just for the lucent review of nonlinear continuum mechanics.

By systematic way of intuition, the authors successfully grasp the philosophy of nonlinear phenomena. The methods of explanation in TL, UL, and ALE are obviously pronounced. If the books of Prof. Zienkiewicz and Prof.Taylor, Prof.Bathe are treasures of FEM, this book is worth in that place.

Though I had been somehow prepared by the positive comments of the other reviewers before buying this book, I must admit that I was impressed from the very beginning of study. Non linear FE is a "hard" subject, however the authors proceed in the most systematic and comprehensive way, addressing the most important aspects of non linear fem analysis in a single volume. The book contains everything you need from the field of Continuum Mechanics and is ideal for self - study. Valuable references, handy summary boxes and exercises at the end of each chapter are included.

Statistical Mechanics is the extended version of McQuarrie's 1984 text -- Statistical Thermodynamics -- now out of print. Although our printing of this book carries a 2000 copyright date, this is not a new edition. It is the original first edition, without any changes to the text (except preface). Despite its age, it is still a renowned and accessible introduction to the subject, containing a large number of chapter-ending problems for students.

I was forced to use this singularly unhelpful book in graduate school. It was written in a terse, indigestible style; contained very few worked problems; left many important derivations or steps of derivations to the reader; had impossibly hard end-of-chapter problems - without solutions; and contained many typographical errors. Perhaps, as other reviewers have suggested, it would have been more helpful as a research reference, or as a textbook for students with a very strong background in undergraduate statistical thermodynamics. Do not attempt to use this book to learn statistical mechanics for the first time!

The condition of the book I purchased was rated as very good on the Amazon web site, but its real condition was excellent. In fact, it is as close to being a new book as a used book can get.

I am a engineering/physics student, and I used this book for a first year graduate course in statistical mechanics. The book contains a lot of information, and the chapters are extremely concise. In this, lies both the strengths and weaknesses of the book. I think that the short, too the point writing style makes this book an excellent reference. However, the relatively small amount of exposition made it hard to learn material for the first time from the book. Overall, I would not suggest this book as a first introduction to the subject. But i think that it could be a usefull reference for someone with some background in the subject.

2 out of 5 stars The standard, but maybe not the best.......2003-07-03

McQuarrie's book is typically the standard text in many undergraduate and graduate programs, but I believe there are many other resources to learn statistical mechanics in a much clearer way.

I find the following things to be particularly annoying about the book:
1) The typesetting! The pages are very difficult to read, especially equations. It's a very old typeface and my eyes literally hurt after reading McQuarrie for too long.
2) Very few problems are worked out. Many important concepts that should involve more detailed discussion are simply left as exercises to the student. I believe that more peripheral results and extensions of fundamental material are better left as problems, as opposed to fundamental results.
3) The glaring absense of good discussion on spin systems (such as Ising magnets) and critical phenomena. These are VERY important topics in modern statistical mechanics.

I would recommend the following if you want to find good books on statistical mechanics:
1) If you want one comprehensive volume, use Linda Reichl's book.
2) If you are only interested in statistical thermodynamics, use David Chandler's book.
3) If you want both statistical thermodynamics and nonequatilibrium statistical mechanics, use Chandler and Robert Zwanzig's book.
Also, Kubo's statistical thermodynamics book is really good.

I really would not recommend McQuarrie. Save your eyes and get a more modern book with at least a better typesetting.

This is a good book, but it's not a graduate text for the first half. If you're just reading it and not taking the class, buy Hill instead (it's $10). McQuarrie learned how to teach SM from Hill and it shows. The second half is a whole different story. It's research level material, but is perhaps out of date. Lastly, Karl Freed and Stuart Rice teach from this book, which should be worth far more than my review.

This book presents recent advances in econometric methods that make feasible the estimation of models that have both features. One approach, in the classical framework, approximates the likelihood function; the other, in the Bayesian framework, uses Gibbs-sampling to simulate posterior distributions from data.

The authors present numerous applications of these approaches in detail: decomposition of time series into trend and cycle, a new index of coincident economic indicators, approaches to modeling monetary policy uncertainty, Friedman's "plucking" model of recessions, the detection of turning points in the business cycle and the question of whether booms and recessions are duration-dependent, state-space models with heteroskedastic disturbances, fads and crashes in financial markets, long-run real exchange rates, and mean reversion in asset returns.

This book gives a step-by-step treatement of models with regime changes and time varying coefficients. If you are a student or a practitioner you will find this book very useful to start your applications. The first six chapters are very well developed, and the GAUSS codes provided by the authors let you realize how to do the job. These chapters will let you estimate a model using the classical approach. However, the next chapters that cover exactly the same topics using a bayesian approach are not that well developed. The examples and explanations are not clear, and the few examples do not help you generalize the techniques to your own models. The first six chapters, however, make this book worth 5 stars!

This is basically the only book around on this subject, and they do have useful informations as well. I think explanation is concise enough to clearly understand. I found this book to be useful because of those. The only thing is some typos (which I think is inevitable for this kind of book) and program software on the web which is not very clearly written.

This book is poorly written. It has numerous typos. The authors never even bothered to explain some of the math notations they used. Apparently, I believe some the examples were copied from other books without a clear explanation of the notations. You'll end up scratching your head on the notations and typos. I wasted a lot of time reading this book. They never mentioned some of shorting comings of using Gibbs Sampling, and ignore some of alternative methods that are far superior in many other respects.

This is really great book for understanding regime switching and state-space models.As far as I know this is the first book that includes both topics together.It is easy to understand and supporting applications at the end of the each chapter make things easier for the reader.Furthermore, it also tells about bayesian econometrics and gibbs-sampling approach.In short,it is a must buy book for a economics graduate student who is interested in nonlinear time series econometrics

This book provides an introduction to Monte Carlo simulations in classical statistical physics and is aimed both at students beginning work in the field and at more experienced researchers who wish to learn more about Monte Carlo methods. The material covered includes methods for both equilibrium and out of equilibrium systems, and common algorithms like the Metropolis and heat-bath algorithms are discussed in detail, as well as more sophisticated ones such as continuous time Monte Carlo, cluster algorithms, multigrid methods, entropic sampling and simulated tempering. Data analysis techniques are also explained starting with straightforward measurement and error-estimation techniques and progressing to topics such as the single and multiple histogram methods and finite size scaling. The last few chapters of the book are devoted to implementation issues, including discussions of such topics as lattice representations, efficient implementation of data structures, multispin coding, parallelization of Monte Carlo algorithms, and random number generation. At the end of the book the authors give a number of example programmes demonstrating the applications of these techniques to a variety of well-known models.

Overall, it's an excellent book on the practice of Monte Carlo and the c++ code in appendix are very instructive (Random Number Generators, Solid Monte Carlo Routines, etc.). It does have certain weaknesses though.

1) Sometimes the description are trivial in principle but written in great details. For example, on Pg 58 on the exact methods (so-called 'efficient way') of calculating averaged quantities from simulation.
2) Most of the content are heuristic. The discussion of the whole book is based on practice, although you do find something looks like a rigious proof (but no in fact). By rigious, I mean the proof should be based on Markov Chain and related properties of random process and statistical physics.

But as I said in the beginning, this is a invaluable book to anyone who wants to use Monte Carlo method in his/her domain. For myself, I am using this book as a reference to tackle functional optimization - Simulated Annealing, which is a very close sibling of Monte Carlo method.

This book covers a wide range of applications in Statistical Mechanics, with clear explanation, examples, tips, algorithms, and explicit programs at the end of the book. It is good for beginners and experienced alike, since it discusses "classical" and modern algorithms. It is a must for those who want to make actual numerical calculations in Statistical Physics.

Classical Methods of Statistics is a guidebook combining theory and practical methods. It is especially conceived for graduate students and scientists who are interested in the applications of statistical methods to plasma physics. Thus it provides also concise information on experimental aspects of fusion-oriented plasma physics. In view of the first three basic chapters it can be fruitfully used by students majoring in probability theory and statistics. The first part deals with the mathematical foundation and framework of the subject. Some attention is given to the historical background. Exercises are added to help readers understand the underlying concepts. In the second part, two major case studies are presented which exemplify the areas of discriminant analysis and multivariate profile analysis, respectively. To introduce these case studies, an outline is provided of the context of magnetic plasma fusion research. In the third part an overview is given of statistical software; separate attention is devoted to SAS and S-PLUS. The final chapter presents several datasets and gives a description of their physical setting. Most of these datasets were assembled at the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak. All of them are accompanied by exercises in form of guided (minor) case studies. The book concludes with translations of key concepts into several languages.

One thing the casual viewer might not notice is that this text applies methods of "classical" statistics ... to the field of plasma physics, complete with sample data sets. In short, the author assumes you're not an idiot. The selection of topics is very good and practical to any experimenter: an advanced discussion of estimators, intervals, and hypothesis testing, factor analysis, a smidgeon of time series. This is a relatively slim volume and the topics are lightly but not perfunctorily touched upon. The author focuses on pith and it makes for a very interesting read.

      This monograph considers systems of infinite number of particles, in particular the justification of the procedure of thermodynamic limit transition. The authors discuss the equilibrium and non-equilibrium states of infinite classical statistical systems. Those states are defined in terms of stationary and nonstationary solutions to the Bogolyubov equations for the sequences of correlation functions in the thermodynamic limit. This is the first detailed investigation of the thermodynamic limit for non-equilibrium systems and of the states of infinite systems in the cases of both canonical and grand canonical ensembles, for which the thermodynamic equivalence is proved. A comprehensive survey of results is also included; it concerns the properties of correlation functions for infinite systems and the corresponding equations. For this new edition, the authors have made changes to reflect the development of theory in the last ten years. They have also simplified certain sections, presenting them more systematically, and greatly increased the number of references. The book is aimed at theoretical physicists and mathematicians and will also be of use to students and postgraduate students in the field.

      The text is a compilation of the primary author's (Elishakoff's)technical papers over the span of several decades. While the topics covered on the general subject of buckling, sensitivity analysis, and probabilistic approaches to buckling should have been good, this is another example of a text where neither the authors (of which there were three) nor the publisher proofread the equations or figures in the text prior to releasing the same old mistakes and typographical errors. Many of the equations contain errors and cannot be utilized as published. Do not punsih any students by utilizing this error ridden text as-is in the classroom!
