Book Description

Limnology is the study of the structural and functional interrelationships of organisms of inland waters as they are affected by their dynamic physical, chemical, and biotic environments. Limnology: Lake and River Ecosystems, 3rd Edition, is a new edition of this established classic text. The coverage remains rigorous and uncompromising and has been thoroughly reviewed and updated with evolving recent research results and theoretical understanding. In addition, the author has expanded coverage of lakes to reservoir and river ecosystems in comparative functional analyses.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to Read.......2003-11-04

Well there is no doubt that this book contains a large amount of information, it CANNOT be used as an introductory text. It is much to difficult to comprehend, and Wetzel makes absolutely no effort to teach the concepts. Here merely presents a synthesis of limnological research.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a Limnology Primer.......2000-01-30

This is an excellent general reference text. Can not say enough about the excellent content of this text. But it is need of an edition update with information for lake mapping and restoration. Dr. C.L. Nelson of St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN has an excellent small text on physical limnology for the mapping aspect. This book does do an excellent job on the biological aspects of limnological work.

5 out of 5 stars My view of the Wetzel's limnology book.......2000-01-30

The book contains a lot of information related to lakes. It's a complete work about the conditions on this systems. Include a study about the performance of the ionic particles in this systems. It's a suitable book for students like me, to understand the freshwater ecology.

Book Description

The Lake and Pond Management Guidebook is the successor to the Bestselling Lake Smarts: The First Lake Maintenance Handbook, published by the Terrene Institute in 1993. This guidebook is the "bible" for small-scale lake and pond improvements. It contains over 300 ideas and projects that provide step-by-step practical, low-cost solutions to a wide range of problems that lake management professionals face on a regular basis. This updated and expanded second edition includes new material on protecting and restoring the shoreland area, practical algae control techniques, enhancing native aquatic plants, historical lake management efforts, and pond management including storm water pond improvements.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent general reference.......2006-12-18

Lake and Pond Management by Steve McComas is an excellent reference for cooperative extension advisors, soil and water conservation district staff, lake association representatives, and other watershed managers. Licensed commercial pesticide applicators who are considering broadening their credentials to the aquatic pest control category would also find this Guidebook a valuable addition to their reference libraries. As a retired university farm advisor and riverfront landowner, I found this book highly educational - and well worth the price.

Absolutely the last word in pond or small lake creation and maintenance. For both the amateur and professional landscaper. Well worth the steep price.

5 out of 5 stars The Lake Detective... He Can't Be Stumped! A great GLer.......2004-02-16

This is that guy from AM1500 KSTP... Garage Logic, with Joe Soucheray. He goes by "The Lake Detective", and all he does is lakes, I guess. He's found a great niche in MN, land of 10,000 of 'em. Being a lakeshore owner, I've already used some of his techniques to keep my shore in great shape. The beauty of a lot of his approaches is that the solutions mostly seem pretty low-tech and inexpensive. But that's a good thing. I didn't have to rent expensive equipment to get my shore cleared, and the results have been great.

Color pictures would help, but the black-n-whites do the job, I guess. This $80 book saved me hundreds (maybe thousands) from what I was going to do to 'fix up' my shore... Money well spent!

4 out of 5 stars Insightful overview of tropical ecology.......2007-03-09

I found Tropical Nature to be an interesting and easy read. Organized neatly into 17 chapters and an appendix, each covers a specific a specific species of ecological concept. I found chapter 6, "Listen to the flowers" the most interesting, detailing the different mechanisms plants employ in order to have evolutionary advantages as well as trick other species.

(I read this as a precursor to a may term course at my college where I shall be going to the rain forests of Ecuador)

5 out of 5 stars great adventure!.......2007-01-18

I began reading this book for a class involving tropical studies and travel and I wasn't sure what to expect. This is a great book. Easy read. The book takes a broad yet, also in depth exploration of different *interesting* topics in tropical ecology. Although it is definitely not a scientific text, this book takes you for a wondrous adventure into the tropics.

5 out of 5 stars Tropical Nature.......2006-11-13

This book was great. It is written a bit technically, so it would help to have a science backgroung to fully enjoy it. The literary style is easy to read and the book is difficult to put down. I'm sure that having read this book will enhance my trip to the rain forest. Thanks!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Intro to the Natural History of Tropical Forests.......2006-10-15

Buy this Book! This book is a great read for anybody who is interested in life on our planet. It would make a dandy companion to E.O. Wilson's "The Diversity of Life."

5 out of 5 stars ENCHANTING DEPICTION OF THE RAIN FOREST.......2006-04-10

Among books that aim to express to readers the wonders of the rain forest, this one stands out. In 17 chapters that touch upon different aspects of the rain forest, the authors transmit their own passion for the rain forest and the unique intricacies that make rain forests some of the most precious places on earth.

The book is not written as one coherent whole, but rather as 17 individual chapters or essays. Below is a brief sample of topics:

- the strategy of dung scarabs to capture important proteins
- the symbiotic relationship of sloths with the trees they prefer
- the mimicry some insects have developed to elude their main predators, birds
- the reason why some birds have developed migratory patterns to temperate climates
- the reason why some frogs developed a parental care strategy and even marsupial pouches
- the reason why some trees are hollow
- how parasited species can benefit even in the most unlikely scenarios
- why some plants developed hallucinogenic substances

These are just a few of the topics covered in the book. It is written in a pop science format, so that an interested reader will easily understand and appreciate these and many more concepts. The authors carefully explain the relationships, often comparing the rain forest experience with those of temperate forests. The authors also focus on the possible evolutionary principles involved in adaptations presented.

This is the very best introductory book on the subject. It is designed to excite the reader into learning more and even visiting the rain forest. In the mold of Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins, Miyata and Forsyth write a masterpiece that will make the reader feel smarter after reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Better Trout Habitat: A guide to Stream Restoration and Mana.......2001-11-01

This book provides an in depth review of the methods and techniques used to provide habitat characteristics to a variety of streams. The writting style is excellent for both the lay reader as well as someone with a scientific back ground. However, it does not dwell on some fot the more technical details which requires a more technical level book to provide more indepth details. However, as a general manual to habitat resoration it provides an excellent background as well as the necessary caution needed when conducting these types of instream restoration projects.

4 out of 5 stars Good Trout Habitat and Life Cycle Reference.......2000-06-07

This book offers a good variety of man-made trout improvement structures, but the current (2000) state-of-the art in trout habitat improvement trends toward a more natural, vegetation and channel reconstruction approach. This book provides excellent design guidelines and background information on trout and their life cycle, and perhaps the most useful part of this book was the author's ability to teach the reader enough about the habitat requirements of trout to allow the reader some latitude and innovation with their habitat improvement designs.

I personally enjoyed the workable, readable and philosophical approach to fish habitat improvement, and I believe that this book would be a good reference for anyone who wishes to improve trout habitat.

Remember, an ounce of habitat preservation is better than ten pounds of habitat restoration efforts! (Also, the information in this book will help the reader become a more effective trout fisherman!)

      Book Description

This textbook covers Plant Ecology from the molecular to the global level. It covers the following areas in unprecedented breadth and depth:

      - Molecular ecophysiology (stress physiology: light, temperature, oxygen deficiency, drought, salt, heavy metals, xenobiotica and biotic stress factors)
      - Autecology (whole plant ecology: thermal balance, water, nutrient, carbon relations)
      - Ecosystem ecology (plants as part of ecosystems, element cycles, biodiversity)
      - Synecology (development of vegetation in time and space, interactions between vegetation and the abiotic and biotic environment)
      - Global aspects of plant ecology (global change, global biogeochemical cycles, land use, international conventions, socio-economic interactions)

The book is carefully structured and well written: complex issues are elegantly presented and easily understandable. It contains more than 500 photographs and drawings, mostly in colour, illustrating the fascinating subject.
The book is primarily aimed at graduate students of biology but will also be of interest to post-graduate students and researchers in botany, geosciences and landscape ecology. Further, it provides a sound basis for those dealing with agriculture, forestry, land use, and landscape management.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - and see also...........2005-09-03

This is an outstanding book that opened up the whole idea of basing economics on the living sciences rather than physics...

If you find this book interesting, you should also look at the more recent (2004) book "Economia" by Australian scientist Geoff Davies. The book is unfortunately not listed on Amazon, but a search on Google will turn up numerous reviews and an excerpt for those interested.

4 out of 5 stars Still relevant after all these years.......2002-12-30

This is one of the seminal works of the new economy long before the internet exploded and the term was coined. It is a landmark synthesis of technology and economics that remains unmatched 10 years after its release. A long list of industry heavyweights praised this effort at the time, it continues to merit this praise today. Here is an excerpt in Rothschild's own words:

"Capitalism, or the market economy, or the free enterprise system-or whatever you choose to label it-was not planned. Like life on earth, it did not need to be. Capitalism just happened, and it will keep on happening. Quite spontaneously. Capitalism flourishes whenever it is not suppressed, because it is a naturally occurring phenomenon. It is human society organizing itself for survival in a world of limited resources..."Having said all that, it is obvious that what the author presents is a very interesting set of ideas as opposed to a 'movement' of sorts. You can find faults with his technical analysis and conclusions and still come away with some genuine pearls.

5 out of 5 stars This book is excellent........2001-07-26

This is a wonderfully rich book in describing modern economics using the principals of the biology. It makes the most basic economic principals understood by using the theories of evolution. It should be required reading for Economic students (it would have been great to have this book in my Econ classes). The book also provides some excellent history of economic thought, the history of evolution, history of the stream driving motor, and more.

I would highly recommend it even though there are some parts where Rothschild uses slightly bias language to make his points (particularly about the saving rates in the U.S.). I have the version that was written in 1990. It was be especially interesting to read the updated version, especially given everything that has happen during the 1990s.

Rothschild, Congratulations on an excellent book. -matthew@mkaz.com

2 out of 5 stars Wrong model for progress........2001-05-15

I learned some interesting things from this book, especially about the role of the Experience Curve in dramatically driving down the prices of new products.

Unfortunately the overall view seems to offer wrong-headed advice for solving our problems.

One, in nature ecosystems don't grow productive without limit. Liebig's Law constrains how much biomass a given environment can support, beyond which there can be only change within limits (or drift between attractors, in chaos theory terms), but not "boundless expansion." Presumably people who want to find a model for economic progress wouldn't want our economy to top off at some level of production and then stagnate, which is what we see in natural ecosystems.

Two, while Rothschild presents the Experience Curve as a refutation of the Principle of Diminishing Returns, in reality it is just a delayed form of that dismal principle. You might drive down the cost of a new product quite easily through several doublings in the experience you've acquired in producing it. But most of the products we depend on -- especially electricity and fossil fuels -- have such enormous amounts of experience behind their production already that you'd have to wait for many decades or even centuries before the next doubling has accumulated and worked it cost-reducing effect. Instead we see a diminishing return on cost reduction from each unit of experience, at least on the kind of timescale we have to deal with today.

Three, Rothschild apparently has no clue that in the real American economy, the overwhelming majority of people don't produce or handle tangible goods for a living, but instead work in non-productive, or worse, counter-productive, "services." Retail clerks and restaurant workers outnumber factory workers in the U.S. these days, yet these personal-service jobs don't create real wealth, and resist becoming more efficient because of the nature of human social interaction.... Presumably a bionomic view of the economy could account for parasitism, as in natural ecosystems, yet Rothschild doesn't seem to understand how serious a threat the "service sector" is to genuine progress.

And four, the libertarian cult status this book has attained among "New Economy" cranks probably has contributed to the mess the U.S. economy is in now. (The first edition was published in the early 1990's, just in time to wreak its intellectual and practical damage.) Between the anti-progress successes of the Left, and the Right's taxophobic, anti-government agenda and infatuations with meretricious New Economy and globalist free-trade theories, the U.S. has begun the New Millennium with a rapidly deteriorating infrastructure, energy shortages, deindustrialization and other problems that a reasonable grasp of reality could have prevented....

        5 out of 5 stars Eye opening.......2001-02-07

I had the chance to stumble on this book 5 years ago (1996) while attending business school, and it was just an amazing intellectual experience.

The book helps you make sense of not only the business world, but life in general. The essential message I took from it was that you don't have to reinvent the wheel everyday, most answers to social, economic or technological problems can be found in nature.

After this book you won't look at a tree the same way you used to. A must read for any business student or decision maker.

          Book Description

Conventional wisdom considers deserts stark, harsh regions that support few living things. Most people also believe that water alone makes the desert bloom. Ecology of Desert Systems challenges these conventional views.

This volume explores a broad range of topics of interest to ecosystem, population, community, and physiological ecologists. Climate, weather patterns, geomorphology, and wind and water processes are examined as variables that affect the distribution of biota through fundamental ecosystem processes. Descriptions of morphological, behavioral, and physiological adaptations of desert biota illuminate, through the lens of patch dynamics, principles for understanding observed patterns of primary production, nutrient cycling, and the effects of consumers. Desertification, and the techniques for monitoring and quantifying it, is examined within the framework of desert ecosystem patterns and processes.

          * Focuses on the interactions of climate, soil, and biota along a spectrum of spatial and temporal scales
          * Details the role of animals in desert ecosystems and landscape processes
          * Examines watershed scale processes, the ecology of ephemeral lakes, and the ecological changes identified with desertification
          * Outlines the fundamental concepts relevant to sustainable development of arid lands

            Book Description

Adopting the novel approach of viewing the role of fungi from the perspective of ecosystem functions, this book examines the importance of fungi in soil formation, plant primary production, sustenance of secondary producers, and regulation of plant and animal populations and communities. This volume emphasizes the idea that fungi are not alone in the regulation of these processes. It addresses the main processes occurring in ecosystems and showing where and how fungi are critical, and enables readers to gain a better understanding of the role of fungi in shaping ecosystems. Fungi in Ecosystem Processes considers the negative impact of fungi on faunal productivity and includes more than 1200 citations.
