Customer Reviews:
Annoying assumptions make it hard jump into this book.......2004-08-26
I work in the stress analysis department for a large aerospace manufacturer. I got this book because I am interested in developing probabilistic approaches to predicting failure rates for our components, particularly when used in heretofore unexplored environments. I was aware that the marine industry had a long history of attempting just that. I have been working through the book and have found a number of typographical errors (the answers for example 16.1 on 325-326 are incorrect) and the author assumes that you know where some equations come from. I've read several editions of Roark & Young (2nd - 6th) and have no idea where the equations in example 17.1 came from. Perhaps stress analysts who design welds in ships will recognize them but I couldn't find anyone who did. (Is W the section modulus as defined in Bryars, Snyder and Plants? I don't know because W is not defined and subsequent equations don't look familiar either.)
Evan so, the parts of the book that stand alone do an adequate job of explaining and illustrating the concepts and I suspect my goal of learning and developing probabilistic thinking will be reached. I give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume that he wanted me to check his math just to make sure I really understood what I was doing.

Book Description
This popular undergraduate textbook offers students a firm grounding in the fundamentals of biological oceanography. As well as a clear and accessible text, learning is enhanced with numerous illustrations including a colour section, thorough chapter summaries, and questions with answers and comments at the back of the book.
The comprehensive coverage of this book encompasses the properties of seawater which affect life in the ocean, classification of marine environments and organisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton, marine food webs, larger marine animals (marine mammals, seabirds and fish), life on the seafloor, and the way in which humans affect marine ecosystems.
The second edition has been thoroughly updated, including much data available for the first time in a book at this level. There is also a new chapter on human impacts - from harvesting vast amounts of fish, pollution, and deliberately or accidentally transferring marine organisms to new environments.
This book complements the Open University Oceanography Series, also published by Butterworth-Heinemann, and is a set text for the Open University third level course, S330.
A leading undergraduate text
New chapter on human impacts - a highly topical subject
Expanded colour plate section

understandable as an ecosystem.......2006-06-27
The authors provide more than just a superficial descriptive tour of the oceans. The text delves into studying the ocean as an ecosystem or subsets of it, as ecosystems in their own right. The food chain provides one way of understanding an ecosystem, and the adaptations that various creatures have for the niches they occupy. Here, the authors start from first principles, with the photosynthetic species and the depths which they occupy.
The book also shows that at the ocean bottoms, even with no photosynthesis, there is still a rich environment for benthic species.
The diagrams are well done and readily understandable. The biochemistry is pretty simple, but this is just an introductory text.

Book Description
The present volume is the first in a series of two books dedicated to the paleoceanography of the Late Cenozoic ocean. The need for an updated synthesis on paleoceanographic science is urgent, owing to the huge and very diversified progress made in this domain during the last decade. In addition, no comprehensive monography still exists in this domain. This is quite incomprehensible in view of the contribution of paleoceanographic research to our present understanding of the dynamics of the climate-ocean system. The focus on the Late Cenozoic ocean responds to two constraints. Firstly, most quantitative methods, notably those based on micropaleontological approaches, cannot be used back in time beyond a few million years at most. Secondly, the last few million years, with their strong climate oscillations, show specific high frequency changes of the ocean with a relatively reduced influcence of tectonics. The first volume addresses quantitative methodologies to reconstruct the dynamics of the ocean andthe second, major aspects of the ocean system (thermohaline circulation, carbon cycle, productivity, sea level etc.) and will also present regional synthesis about the paleoceanography of major the oceanic basins. In both cases, the focus is the open ocean leaving aside nearshore processes that depend too much onlocal conditions. In this first volume, we have gathered up-to-date methodologies for the measurement and quantitative interpretation of tracers and proxies in deep sea sediments that allow reconstruction of a few key past-properties of the ocean( temperature, salinity, sea-ice cover, seasonal gradients, pH, ventilation, oceanic currents, thermohaline circulation, and paleoproductivity). Chapters encompass physical methods (conventional grain-size studies, tomodensitometry, magnetic and mineralogical properties), most current biological proxies (planktic and benthic foraminifers, deep sea corals, diatoms, coccoliths, dinocysts and biomarkers) and key geochemical tracers (trace elements, stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, and U-series). Contributors to the book and members of the review panel are among the best scientists in their specialty. They represent major European and North American laboratories and thus provide a priori guarantees to the quality and updat of the entire book. Scientists and graduate students in paleoclimatology, paleoceanography, climate modeling, and undergraduate and graduate students in marine geology represent the target audience. This volume should be of interest for scientists involved in several international programs, such as those linked to the IPCC (IODP Integrated Ocean Drilling Program; PAGES Past Global Changes; IMAGES Marine Global Changes; PMIP: Paleoclimate Intercomparison Project; several IGCP projects etc.), That is, all programs that require access to time series illustrating changes in the climate-ocean system.
* Presents updated techniques and methods in paleoceanography
* Reviews the state-of-the-art interpretation of proxies used for quantitative reconstruction of the climate-ocean system
* Acts as a supplement for undergraduate and graduate courses in paleoceanography and marine geology

Book Description
Seafloor surveying with acoustic remote sensing has become a powerful tool for researchers and professionals seeking knowledge about the structure and behavior of the seafloor. In particular, sidescan sonar is proving to be the preeminent technique, but its data is often difficult to interpret due to the physics of acoustic remote sensing, and to the varied geological processes at play. This not only presents all the fundamentals but also explains how to interpret sidescan sonar imagery and bathymetry. It fully epxlores the most recent advances, both in the technology and in the knowledge of marine structures, and provides deep insights for interpretation and decision-making. Broadly expanded and updated from the previous 1997 "Handbook of Seafloor Sonar Imagery", this handbook is indispensable to oceanographers, resource exploiters, telecommunications engineers, and marine researchers of all kinds.

Book Description
Acoustic remote sensing of the ocean environment has seen a remarkable progress in the last ten–fifteen year as a result of an increasing understanding of the experimental techniques and procedures and of the subtleties of the interaction of sound with complex physical and biological processes. This is particularly true in the shallow water environment, where acoustic methods have the potential to allow for a fast and accurate characterization and assessment of the environment. To review the state of the art and the research progress in the field, a workshop was held in the island of Ischia, Italy, in June 2004. Special emphasis has been placed on the experimental applications, to realistically assess their potential and capabilities of the methods proposed. This volume, based on the workshop presentations, include a range of diverse and innovative applications, as well as comparisons in the field among competing approaches and review papers.
The invited contributions range from ocean acoustic tomography to estimation of the seabed and subbottom properties, to marine biology; ambient noise in the ocean is increasingly being investigated as a replacement for traditional acoustic source, to make acoustic inversion even less invasive and more environmentally friendly as a methodology to probe the ocean.
Audience: This book is primarily intended for physicists and engineers working in underwater acoustics and oceanic engineering. It will also be of interest to marine biologists, geophysicists and oceanographers as potential users of the methodologies and techniques described in the book contributions.
