Book Description
Monitoring Land Supply with Geographic Information Systems Theory, Practice, and Parcel-Based Approaches
Monitoring the supply of buildable land and its capacity to accommodate growth within urbanizing regions is an increasingly important component of urban planning and growth management. Recent developments in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have opened up new opportunities for local and regional government to monitor land supply and capacity. Based on a study sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, this book reviews the state of the art in land monitoring, particularly as it benefits from the introduction of GIS data and analysis capabilities at the level of individual land parcels.
Monitoring Land Supply with Geographic Information Systems addresses:
* Technical and methodological frameworks for data collection and analysis as well as applications to a range of policy concerns
* Case studies of successful land monitoring programs, including Portland, Oregon; Montgomery County, Maryland; and the Puget Sound Regional Council in Washington
* Thematic topics ranging from database design to urban simulation modeling to organizational contexts
* Detailed findings of a national survey of land supply monitoring programs
This guide presents a comprehensive, timely, and critical overview of a fast-emerging field of planning and policy analysis. It provides an invaluable resource to professionals, including land use and economic development planners, GIS analysts, local government officials, and private developers.

not 400+ pages.......2005-11-06
I just recieved the book, and it appears to be what I was looking for, but on Amazon.com it is listed as being over 400 pages. The book is only 335 pages with the last 100 pages being an appendix, glossary of terms, and an index. For the price of the book, the correct number of pages should be correct.

Book Description
Sound Images of the Ocean is the first book of its kind which offers a comprehensive overview of acoustic imaging applications in the various fields of marine research, utilization, surveillance, and protection. The book employs 400 sound images of the sea floor and of processes in the sea volume, contributed by more than 120 marine experts from 22 nations. Written to be accessible to professionals in diverse related fields, the concise accompanying explanations of the complex relationships revealed by the images strive to condense the results to an essential "message." The book develops an interdisciplinary understanding of underwater acoustics and its diagnostic capabilities in order to visualize in detail the two thirds of the surface of the globe otherwise hidden from view. The high resolution but ship dependent acoustic imagery is compared with its satellite dependent counterpart, the large scale sea floor imagery by scanning the gravity deformed sea surface.
The CD included with the book enables users to rotate zoom into relief globe, as well as, into selected large sound images. It also contains animations and underwater flights and sound tracks.

Book Description
This book contains papers presented at the First International Conference on Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows. The contents stress the importance and possibilities of numerical simulation and experimental measurements on all those environmental flows that affect our environment, sometimes dramatically. The basic concept of dense flow relates to a great variety of natural phenomena that occur both in the field and in the laboratory. A more detailed understanding of these may lead not only to a better description of what happens in nature but also to the definition of more effective countermeasures to limit the worst effects or even to predict the dynamics of natural disasters in order to minimise potential damage. This book contains sections on the following topics: Mass wasting and solid transport; Slope failure and landslides; Sediment, slurry and granular flows; Solid transport within a streamflow; Hyper-concentrated flows; Debris-flow phenomenology and rheology; Debris-flow triggering and mobilisation mechanisms; Debris flow modelling; Debris flow disaster mitigation (structural and non-structural measures); Case studies; Computer models; Rock falling problems and Mechanics of solid-liquid-flows.
Book Description
Climate Change Impacts on the United States is part of a national process of research analysis and dialogue about the coming changes in climate, their impacts, and what Americans can do to adapt to an uncertain and continuously changing climate. The report was called for by a 1990 law and was written by the National Assessment Synthesis Team (NAST), a committee of experts drawn from governments, universities, industry, and non-governmental organizations. The NAST produced two documents: the longer Foundation Report and the Overview Report, which is significantly more accessible and shorter. The two reports cover all areas of the United States and are peer-reviewed documents that synthesize results from studies. They identify key climatic vulnerabilities of particular regions and sectors in the context of other changes in the nation's environment, resources, and economy.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of interesting.......2004-02-10
This was a so-so assessment of climate change. It had some very serious methodological problems (the scenarios) and some editorial problems but it was a starting point.
Excellent Book and Easy to Read.......2002-01-11
This book is an excellent choice if you would like to read straight forward and well researched information about climate change. It is well written and easy to read. The graphics are some of the most effective that I have seen in a scientific text!
I am currently a student and found it very interesting. It is readable from the high school level and up. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in climate change impacts on the US and wants a book that is clear and concise and user friendly. The book covers different geographical regions of the country and different topics like agriculture. I found the sections on New England, Alaska, Water, Health, and Forests to be particularly interesting. This book is an overview document and the citations for the book are contained in Climate Change Impacts on the United States Foundation book which is a more technical and scientifically detailed document that supports this text. Overall, the book really allowed me to examine potential impacts and to think about what the implications of those impacts may be.
Poorly integrated; lacking data.......2001-07-22
This volume was not well put together, not well edited, not well integrated. I am not a global warming skeptic, but the logic of this analysis is very poor - brainstorming lists of possible effects rather than thoughtful scientific analysis.
Book Description
Global Warming: The Hard Science presents a comprehensive, qualitatively rigorous, and critical discussion of the science underlying the global warming issue. The major processes in the climate system needed to understand projected human-induced climatic change are presented in detail. Observational systems used to monitor changes in the climate system and the ways in which the raw data are analyzed in order to produce estimates of current trends are also critically reviewed.
The author discusses the hierarchy of computer models used to project changes in the carbon cycle, in climate, and in sea level and examines the physical principles underlying the greenhouse effect and projected warming. The text also presents a detailed discussion of the carbon cycle, of climate sensitivity, and of projected patterns of climatic change through time. Sea level rise and issues of risk and potential surprises are also critically assessed. Emphasis is placed throughout on developing an intuitive understanding of those results that do not depend on the details of any one computer simulation model. A series of boxes illustrate the key points through step-by-step calculations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book. Somewhat technical........2001-08-01
This is a really super book. Much of it may be too involved for non-scientist readers, though there is plenty of material that just about anyone can read profitably. Probably best suited for an introductory graduate course, or senior level course, for earth science students. Has much better coverage of global biogeochemical processes than most climate books. I would combine with Peixoto & Oort or Hartmann's books, which are complementary.
I am a physical oceanographer, but not a climate specialist.

Book Description
The degree to which human conditions and the natural environment are vulnerable to the potential effects of climate change is a key concern for governments and the environmental science community worldwide. This book from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides the best available base of scientific information for policymakers and public use. The Regional Impacts of Climate Change: An Assessment of Vulnerability reviews state-of-the-art information on potential impacts of climate change for ecological systems, water supply, food production, coastal infrastructure, human health, and other resources for ten global regions. It also illustrates that the increasing costs of climate and climate variability, in terms of loss of human life and capital due to floods, storms, and droughts, are a result of the lack of adjustment and response in society's policies and use of resources. This book points to management options that would make many sectors more resilient to current variability in climate and thus help these sectors adapt to future changes in climate. This book will become the primary source of information on regional aspects of climate change for policymakers, the scientific community, and students.

Book Description
The adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in December 1997 was a major achievement in the endeavour to tackle the problem of global climate change at the dawn of the 21st century. After many years of involvement in the negotiation process, the book's two internationally recognised authors now offer the international community a first hand and inside perspective of the debate on the Kyoto Protocol. The book provides a comprehensive scholarly analysis of the history and content of the Protocol itself as well as of the economic, political and legal implications of its implementation. It also presents a perspective for the further development of the climate regime. These important features make this book an indispensable working tool for policy makers, negotiators, academics and all those actively involved and interested in climate change issues in both the developed and developing world.
