Book Description
Intended as an introductory text in soil mechanics, the sixth edition of Das, Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, offers an overview of soil properties and mechanics, together with coverage of field practices and basic engineering procedure. With more figures and worked out problems than any other text on the market, this text also provides the background information needed to support study in later design-oriented courses or in professional practice.
Customer Reviews:
great condition, a little damage due to shipping.......2005-09-23
looks great, feels great, smells great. minor damage on the binder from shipping.
This is a great intro book on Soil Mechanics........2004-01-10
I just finished taking a intro Soil Mechanics class using this book. We completed all 16 chapters which is quite a feat for any engineering class.
I thought the book was very good at laying out the conceptual aspects of soil mechanics and it was very easy to read through, espcially for an engineering book. The book has lots of illustrations and pictures (B&W). The books chapter layout was a little bass ackwards (Ch 11-14). The book has a fair amount of sample problems, at least one for every concept. However Engineering students regarding solved problems are like crack addicts on the streets, you can never have enough of what you desire.
I would actually rate this book a 4.5/5.0......but I had to round up.
Much to be desired........2000-08-09
I first bought this book as a required text for a couple of my modules in school. This book is very effective when it comes to presenting the mathematical formula, examples and graphs. However, the discussions of tests and soil behaviour left much to be desired.
This book would be suitable for people who just started on soil mechanics.

Fundamentals of Structural Geology
ASIN: 0125769237 |
Book Description
Modern Structural Geology, Volume 3 gives a practical introduction to how mathematical tools (continuum mechanics) can be used to model geological structures (i.e., naturally deformed rocks).
It provides a strong emphasis on the application of mathematics to solving real geological problems.
This is the third volume of a highly successful textbook series. It sets out in detail many fundamental and modern research techniques, some for the first time.
It is richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams of naturally deformed rocks. Very few books in the field contain even a fraction of this illustrative material.
Because of the somewhat complex nature of some of the mathematical techniques, computer methods are sometimes needed to formulate solutions to the problems. These programs are fully listed in BASIC language at the end of the relevant Session, and a disk of these programs suitable for MAC and PC hardware is provided.
Modern Structural Geology, Volume 3 is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying structural geology; the secondary market are mechanical and civil engineers wanting a working knowledge of earth sciences; mathematicians wanting to develop practical applications of continuum mechanics.
* Volumes 1 and 2 are best-sellers and widely adopted
* Mathematical modelling programs included on CD-Rom
* Exercises at the end of each chapter
* Superb photography

Book Description
Although
Rock Mechanics addresses many of the rock mechanics issues which arise in underground mining engineering, it is not a text exclusively for mining applications. It consists of five categories of topics on the science and practice of rock engineering: basic engineering principles relevant to rock mechanics; mechanical properties of rock and rock masses; design of underground excavations in various rock mass conditions; mining methods and their implementation; and guidelines on rock mechanics practice. Throughout the text, and particularly in those sections concerned with excavation design and design of mining layouts, reference is made to computational methods of analysis of stress and displacement in a rock mass. The principles of various computational schemes, such as boundary element, finite element and distinct element methods, are considered. This new edition has been completely revised to reflect the notable innovations in mining engineering and the remarkable developments in the science of rock mechanics and the practice of rock engineering that have taken place over the last two decades.
Based on extensive professional, research and teaching experience, this book will provide an authoritative and comprehensive text for final year undergraduates and commencing postgraduate students. For professional practitioners, not only will it be of interest to mining and geological engineers but also to civil engineers, structural and mining geologists and geophysicists as a standard work for professional reference purposes.
B.H.G. Brady is Emeritus Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at The University of Western Australia, and a consulting rock mechanics engineer.
E.T. Brown is Senior Consultant, Golder Associates Pty Ltd, Brisbane, Australia and formerly Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Queensland, Australia.

Customer Reviews:
A very basic, easy-to-read book..........2003-06-03
A good book for those looking for a very basic, easy-to-read, book. It does have exercises after each chapter, which is good for students. However, many of them are very "repetitive"; the only difference between them are the numbers used in them. I should add that there aren't much challenging problems; most of them are easy.
The book doesn't go deep in some important topics. In some cases the theory seems to be just a "brief intro" to the topic, rather than a real discussion about it. Of course, this does not mean it's a bad book... but it should be taken into account (as the title says) that it deals with the very "fundamentals" of geotechnical engineering.
Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering.......2000-11-04
It's excellent book for introduction to Geotechinical Engineering. Only problem I had with this book is that I was not familiar with SI units, but you will get use to it later as you solve some problems by yourelf. There is occassional typos errors with example problems and equation you may need to be careful. Other than that it is still the best book I've read in regards to Geotechincal subject. The book is generally easy to read and understand.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING!.......2000-04-22
This book explains to you all the basic principles of geotechnical engineering step-by-step. It also includes excellents examples and exercises to help you to understand better each theme, but you shouldn't have problems..because it's so simple to understand.

Geological Atlas of Africa: With Notes on Stratigraphy, Tectonics, Economic Geology, Geohazards and Geosites of Each Country
ASIN: 3540251960 |
Book Description
The book covers not only practical aspects but also the underlying theoretical approaches. It also covers the fundamentals of rock mechanics. It addresses not only students but also professionals who are interested to understand the underlying principles and methods and – possibly – to further develop them. Emphasis is given to the mechanical approach rather than to hardly tractable empirical statements. The text is concise and as far as possible complete and comprises a large list of citations. Publications of the English and German speaking scientific communities have been taken into account.
Customer Reviews:
Very good for me as newbie.......2005-10-29
I really liked the book for providing a good introduction into tunnelling, can't say a lot about the tunnel mechanics since I have no background in civil engineering. A mechanical engineer like me is given a concise overview of tunnelling and sheds some light on the problems encountered. Quite quickly one understands basic concepts such as tunnel alignment, ventilation or the way tunnel boring machines are built.
It is, however, a bit pricy.

Book Description
This book begins by presenting some of the models which form a part of the typical undergraduate geotechnical curriculum. There is then a description of some of the aspects of soil behavior which contribute to the challenge of geotechnical modelling.
The book is derived from courses given to M level students (postgraduate and final year undergraduate MEng students). A familiarity with basic soil mechanics and with traditional methods of geotechnical design is assumed. The book will also be useful to practising engineers who find themselves involved in the specification of numerical or physical geotechnical modelling.

Analysis and Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations
ASIN: 0849311594 |
Book Description
Great strides have been made in the art of foundation design during the last two decades. In situ testing, site improvement techniques, the use of geogrids in the design of retaining walls, modified ACI codes, and ground deformation modeling using finite elements are but a few of the developments that have significantly advanced foundation engineering in recent years. What has been lacking, however, is a comprehensive reference for foundation engineers that incorporates these state-of-the-art concepts and techniques. The Foundation Engineering Handbook fills that void. It presents both classical and state-of-the-art design and analysis techniques for earthen structures, and covers basic soil mechanics and soil and groundwater modeling concepts along with the latest research results. It addresses isolated and shallow footings, retaining structures, and modern methods of pile construction monitoring, as well as stability analysis and ground improvement methods. The handbook also covers reliability-based design and LRFD (Load Resistance Factor Design)-concepts not addressed in most foundation engineering texts. Easy-to-follow numerical design examples illustrate each technique. Along with its unique, comprehensive coverage, the clear, concise discussions and logical organization of The Foundation Engineering Handbook make it the one quick reference every practitioner and student in the field needs.

Book Description
The nature and the human creations are full of complex phenomena, which sometimes can be observed but rarely follow our hypotheses. The best we can do is to build a parametric model and try to adjust (identify) the unknown parameters based on the available observations. The authors discuss problems relevant to materials and structures like inverse analysis in structures, crack, material parameter and damage identification, modal analysis and thermographic methods. The solution methods vary from classical optimization to neural networks and genetic algorithms. Since all the authors are engineers, well-known in the academic and industrial world, the emphasis is posed on methods which really work. In fact, the chapters provide state-of-the-art information supplemented by selected examples and numerous references to modern publications, so that the reader can directly proceed with the study of his own problems.
