5 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily good text.......2007-03-08

I have to say I'm not sure if texts on atmospheric dynamics get better than this. Physics books in general, in fact, rarely provide an understanding of phenomena that is so concise, intuitive, and yet mathematically robust. I highly recommend it for children, as a gift, and for pleasure reading.

I also very seriously recommend it as a graduate textbook. Five stars all the way.

4 out of 5 stars feedback from rmd.......2007-01-19

it's a very analytic book; it's strongly related to anaysis. all the models are very well explaned; perhaps there is not a good relationship between models and pratical meteorology. phenomena are quite 'hidden' by equations, and only a good experienced physicist has the tools to extract the pratical approach deriving from model behaviours.
however it remains a 'must' for meteorologists.

5 out of 5 stars The most exellent textbook in dynamics of the atmopshere.......2007-01-18

This book, in my opinion, is the most valuable book on dynamical aspects of the atmosphere insofar, especially from pedagogical point of views. As a foreign student, I understand well Holton's writings. Simple but very concise sentences, no wordy explanations. The first 3 chapters provide you the basic equations used in meteorology and their common approximations. The next 5 chapters, to me, are the most interesting chapters. They give you wide range of knowledge from boundary layer, synoptic scale phenomena, to instabilities. Equations are of great usefulness because THEY bring into the light physical contents of the dynamics of the atmosphere. To me, any analytical equation and its explicit solution provide us a more complete understanding than numerical models do (because you never know some unpredictable behaviour of numerical solutions). So, try to understand carefully the simplest cases that Holton selected. This gives you a lot of deeper understandings. Chapters 9 to 11 provide the dynamics of meso- to large-scale circulations. You will see why the Hadley circulation descends around 35N in very clear way. However, simple Poisson eqn with the argument of "positive forcing, negative solution" that is applied throughout the text should be paid especial attention because this conclusion is not always true. As a whole, the contents, explanations and derivations will be very well constructed if you see the main point of each section.
To get to the heart of this book, read and derive all the skips in Holton's derivations. The gaps are not too hard to fill out in math but require some thinking. DO ALL OF THE EXERCISES at the end by yourself and you will double your knowledge. For any math-related physical book, transparent derivations are the first thing you should figure out, physical explanations will follow subsequently. From my experience, people tend to skip any chapter what they thought they knew it already. If you apply this method here, you may be in trouble. Read carefully the first 5 chapters, understand approximations used in the each situation. Simply apply equations without judgments of their assumptions will take you into the nightmare.

I give this book 5 stars +. It is really classic....

4 out of 5 stars you can't find an alternative........2006-03-15

when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.

use the book as a reference and revision of elementary concepts. if you encounter a process you need to understand in your research, this is the book which will tell you the basics. then you go on and learn more from journal articles and your own research.

this new edition of the book, especially with the matlab models, makes studying with it more fun because you can visualise the dynamics and play with the m-files yourself.

4 out of 5 stars An Underrated Text.......2003-10-01

This book, often simply referred to as "Holton", has been roundly cursed by undergraduates since it was first published. I know, because I was one of them. However, as the years went by, and as the number of classes requiring Holton as a text went by, I realized two things. First, that this book was not meant to hold your hand through all the derivations. It requires a competent instructor who can use Holton as a detailed companion to rigorous coursework. This book is NOT for the average person who wishes to study alone. The second thing is that this book was written to fill a gap. There were no similar atmospheric dynamics texts. As a consequence, it must cover a large amount of material in a rather small, college textbook-sized space. It does this well. Yes, the author's writing style is dry to the extreme, and yes, physical explanations are often lacking. However, if you have access to a competent professor, neither of these are problems. One final thought... as we call the book simply "Holton" remember that Frankenstein's monster is often called simply "Frankenstein", but we will leave comparisons to the reader - and to the author!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars My beloved book on GFD.......2006-03-07

Pedlosky's GFD book is a true classic. Its treatment of the core issues is precise and there is an excellent balance between the mathematical derivations and the discussions on the physical processes. One needs to have some background in classical fluid dynamics and applied mathematics (especially integral transformations, Fourier analysis, complex variables and PDE's) to truely appreciate the book but it can be potentially helpful to anyone who is interested in rotating stratified fluids and is eager to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Intuition First.......2001-06-11

All the math in the world would be useless in any applied subject without physical intuition about the phenomena and a clear passage between the intuition and the math. Pedlosky's book has it all - intuition and math. I have loved studying it as my first step in the direction of geophysics from a career in pure mathematics. The book is clear, easy to read, interesting, fascinating. Thank you Pedlosky for a magnificent textbook.

5 out of 5 stars GFD Bible.......2000-11-09

If you trully want to understand geophysical fluid dynamics (ocean/atmosphere) you can not avoid this great book. I strongly suggest it, specially if you are a graduate student going through a GFD course. Years from now you will still go back to Pedlosky to clarify your doubts.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for oceanographers and meteorologists........1996-12-10

Boy, I wish this book had been out when I was in grad school! (Physical oceanography). This is an essential work for the shelf of anyone interested in dynamic meteorology or oceanography. Well organized, thorough, and easy to follow (at least for the intended audience.)

Book Description

This Tenth Edition maintains its solid coverage of the two major energy systems of Earth: the plate tectonic system and the hydrologic cycle. Boasting a new four-part organization, this renowned book contains current content and a striking illustration package, while exposing readers to a global view of Earth and helping them look at the world as geologists do. Part I introduces geologic systems, the materials modified by these systems, and geologic time. Part II examines the hydrologic system and its subsystems chapter by chapter. Part III explores the details of the tectonic system and includes chapters on divergent, transform, and convergent boundaries, as well as mantle plumes—the subsystems of the tectonic system. Part IV looks at our planet in two ways: by first examining the geologic resources that make life possible, and then by comparing and contrasting Earth with other planets to reveal how unique our planet is. For professionals with a career or interest in geology, Earth science, and/or environmental science.

This book was advertised as the 10th edition, but was really the 9th edition. The seller contacted me and offered my money back or a discount, but I didn't respond promply to the email, so I ended up with the book anyway. I ended up buying it from the bookstore too. This books seemed to be the same, exempt the chapters were in different orders. I felt that is was my fault for not responding to the email, but advertising the right edition I think is key if you are going to sell books online.

5 out of 5 stars Best geology book ever!.......2001-11-26

I own a copy of the fifth edition of this book. I am a science junkie and enjoy reading science text books. I find geology particularly interesting and over the years I have read dozens and dozens of geology textbooks. Earth's Dynamic Systems is by far the best I have ever read. If I was ever to teach a geology class, this is the book I would use. The line of thinking is so clear and logical in this book it is a joy to read. The illustrations are among the best I have ever seen and I have just the old the 5th ed. Generally when there are a number of good books on a given subject, they are all pretty much the same in quality. But that is not the case here, this book is head and shoulders above all other geology books. The edition I have also came with a lab manual that I also highly recommend. A wonderful set of books I am proud to own. If you are looking for a definitive single book that best covers all of geology, this is it. In this one book is more geology than in several other books put together. If you thoroughly read this book, you will know geology better than most geologists, it really is that good.

Un exelente libro que, por su excesivo costo para latinoamérica, está fuera del alcance de muchos estudiantes quienes continuaremos estudiando en la bibliotecas.

Una exelente obra de los autores y un muy mal acto de la editora.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-05-13

This is a truly well-written book; introducing the major concepts of atmospheric science in a clear and logical manner. After having the opportunity to study with the author, I am thoroughly impressed with his depth of knowledge in the field. A must-own for any aspiring atmospheric scientist.

4 out of 5 stars General.......2007-03-29

A good book for very brief introduction. Some sections are treated much better than others, where it may have been better to leave out the lesser covered topics rather than include them. This book seems to be a good book for an undergraduate level introduction to atmosphere similar to an intoduction to astronomy course.

5 out of 5 stars The best introductory atmospheric science text on the market.......2002-11-14

Hands down this text is the best for anyone looking for an introduction to the atmospheric sciences. There is almost no topic this book doesn't provide an overview of. Personally my favorite section is Thermodynamics. In my opinion the authors give a very clear and thorough introduction to the subject. Other topics in the book are also equally as good. As an introductory text (2nd year) this book provides a very good base for students in the atmospheric sciences to build upon. I find that even in 4th year I still referred back to the text to recall some of the basics that tend to get lost when you become so fixed on the math.

Excellent text, well worth the money (like almost any book in the field, it is expensive!). The fact that the book hasn't changed in 25yrs (even the cover is the same!) says something about it's quality.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent (albeit dated) treatment of atmos. science.......2002-09-24

(Update--there is a new edition of this textbook, out in spring 2006)

It's too bad Wallace and Hobbs never got around to revising this edition of the text, written in 1977. Of all the undergraduate textbooks I had, this was by far the best.

W&H cover all the important topics in meteorology and atmospheric science. Each chapter is very well written, easy to understand, and has good graphics and thought-provoking (often difficult!) questions at the end of each chapter. Each chapter ends with a series of mathematical questions--some of which require a good bit of thinking to arrive at the right equation to use; and also a series of "explain or interpret these statements." This is where you find out how much you really know!

Why do I like this book? Each chapter can, to some extent, stand on its own. Even though the material is dated (Chapter 5, on clouds and storms, would need significant additions in a course taught today), fundamental principles were the same then and are explained well. The historical notes about famous scientists also add character to the text.

My suggestion for a new reader: Chapters 1, 2, 8, 3, and 5 in that order. Then add Chapters 9, 4, 6, and 7. This way, you get the fundamental theory and then get to apply all you know to actual weather systems (in 3 and 5). The remaining four are almost like special topics and can be read at any time. If anyone has better suggestions, let me know!

5 out of 5 stars stimulating book.......2000-07-22

Although not being a specialist in the field (mine is Condensed Matter Physics), I found this book to be quite stimulating and well written. It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics and Calculus (including several variables and vector calculus) and , in my opinion, that is just what makes it exciting, because it does not, although being introductory, bores the non-specialist reader with a mass of details or just qualitative information. I have been responsible for introductory Themodynamics classes for students of Physics and Meteorology for the last four years in my institute, and now I intend to use examples from the book .

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, if Pricy, Textbook.......2006-08-28

This book is one of the standard university texts in physical geology, along with Understanding Earth by Frank Press et al. The book is well written and very well illustrated. The discription of plate tectonics and it's integration throughout the book is very well done. Like most such texts, it has the disadvantage of being written by lifelong academics with little or no contact with the extraxtive industries. Their treatment of energy extraction is superficial at best. One of the most important developments in geology over the past 30 years, that of sequence stratigraphy, does not even get a mention, perhaps because it came out of the oil exploration industry. (Understanding Earth does devote a paragraph or two to sequence stratigraphy.)

I confess that I did not buy a copy from Amazon. I picked mine up at a Border's Bookstore in London. The only difference in my copy and one bought in the US is a large graphic on the cover saying "Restricted: not for sale in North America". Why the restriction? Like many university textbooks, this one can be bought in overseas at a fraction of the US price. My undiscounted Border's London price was $59.19, a little more than half the US price. Quite remarkable, considering the current weakness of the US dollar to the UK pound.

    5 out of 5 stars a very dynamic earth.......2006-01-25

Skinner, Porter and Park give you a richly illustrated introduction to geology. The text spans the breadth of modern geology, and shows an exciting and changing planet. There are numerous photos of examples of terrain, often accompanied by schematics to aid understanding. The latest techniques practised in geology are explained. Especially noteworthy is the extensive use of GPS. This has greatly aided recording the location of interesting geological samples.

Earthquakes are also well covered, and will probably be of interest to many readers, especially if you are in California. The history of the Richter and Mercalli scales is gone into. Unfortunately, predicting quakes is still very uncertain!

The discussion on earthquakes is also used as a good example of plate tectonics, where the latter is probably the central idea of geology.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Physical Geology Textbook & Reference Source.......2005-02-28

This book is for all persons, students and others, who wish to learn geology with over 500 easy-to-read pages. The Earth is a giant machine, a machine that never stops. How the Earth-machine works is the story told in this book, and it is a fascinating story. The science that studies the Earth is geology, and those involved in the study are geologists. Physical processes are shaping the Earth now and have been shaping the Earth over the past 4.5 billion years.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Easy to understand.......1997-12-23

It was an interesting book that I am going to use also after graduation. Even if I don't speak fluently English, the book was easy to understand. I had the book as recommended litterature in a Geology course. And after reading it I did pretty well on the exam.

    Book Description

Fluid dynamics is fundamental to our understanding of the atmosphere and oceans. Although many of the same principles of fluid dynamics apply to both the atmosphere and oceans, textbooks tend to concentrate on the atmosphere, the ocean, or the theory of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD). This textbook provides a comprehensive unified treatment of atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics. The book introduces the fundamentals of geophysical fluid dynamics, including rotation and stratification, vorticity and potential vorticity, and scaling and approximations. It discusses baroclinic and barotropic instabilities, wave-mean flow interactions and turbulence, and the general circulation of the atmosphere and ocean. Student problems and exercises are included at the end of each chapter. Atmospheric and Oceanic Fluid Dynamics: Fundamentals and Large-Scale Circulation will be an invaluable graduate textbook on advanced courses in GFD, meteorology, atmospheric science and oceanography, and an excellent review volume for researchers. Additional resources are available at www.cambridge.org/9780521849692.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars absolutely great.......2007-03-10

this book has the potential to become the Textbook for modern topics in GFD. you will still need Gill's, Pedlosky's GFD, and Holton's to give you a complete classical training. After that, there are no lack of more modern approaches such as this book, McWilliams', and Salmon's. combined with the great price, what more can one ask!?

5 out of 5 stars An introductory text and an encyclopedia of GFD.......2006-11-14

Geoffrey Vallis has produced a book on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) that ingeniously is both, a lucid introductory text and an encyclopedia.

Vallis does not arrogantly push you in hard at the deep end but caringly takes your hand and helps you enter the shallow end. Your confidence therefore grows quickly and you feel eager to explore and learn. This desire is fully satisfied because all the many details a truly curious mind wants to absorb are provided along the way. You are accompanied as close to the cutting edge of research as it is possible for a book. This makes it also attractive to those of you that are already comfortably in the deep end, especially because of its encyclopedic qualities. It allows you to extract conveniently the specific knowledge you need for your research.

If you are about to enter the world of GFD or you are already happily wandering in it, make sure Vallis' book is in your luggage.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional GFD textbook.......2006-11-12

I have been very impressed with the this excellent textbook. I started reading a pre-print of it at a point in time when I had not yet studied any fluid dynamics, oceanography, or atmospheric science. Despite this, I was able to follow the author's clear exposition as he introduced the fundamentals of GFD. Throughout the book, he does a good job combining descriptive explanations of the phenomena he discusses with physical intuition and mathematical derivations of the necessary equations. But Vallis does much more than just introduce readers to atmospheric and oceanic dynamics; he also conveys the fascination of the subject and gives the reader insights into further research required to improve our understanding of it.

Readers interested in exploring the subject further will find the references a valuable addition to the text. Note that this book only covers dynamics of the atmosphere and ocean. Readers can consult other books on atmospheric science and oceanography for broader introductions to these fields; however, the book is self-contained and doing so is not necessary in order to understand it. Graduate students seeking research topics might find some in the problems marked with diamonds.

I've read a lot of textbooks in many subjects and this one is truly exceptional.

    Book Description

Synoptic meteorology, the study of large-scale weather systems and forecasting using observation, and dynamic meteorology, the study of the laws of physics involved in air movement, are treated in this major new text in two volumes. The author, a meteorologist noted for his research on tornadoes and severe storms, based his work on material he has taught for the past 14 years at the University of Oklahoma. There are no modern texts on the topic. Volume II covers the formation, motion and climatology of extratropical weather systems in the context of the quasigeostrophic theory and "IPV" thinking, the formation and structure of fronts and jets, applications of semigeostrophic theory, and the observed structure and dynamics of precipitation systems in midlatitudes.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars thorough coverage of synoptic meteorology.......2002-09-03

Bluestein's second volume is much more qualitative than the first; instead of dozens of derivations, he gives the reader a solid discussion of cyclones, applications of QG theory, fronts, jets, and then severe weather.

If you are new to meteorology, you'll still need a strong mathmematical background to follow Bluestein's text. The book is written at the academic level...I believe that it is best suited as a reference for those with prior courses in meteorology.

There are not many review problems at the end of any of the three chapters; this is disappointing, as there could easily be dozens (or more!) per section. Still, Bluestein's two-volume series is a must-have for all serious meteorologists.

5 out of 5 stars Well written college Text.......2002-05-16

This is the 2nd of 2 books written by Dr. Bluestein to teach synoptic and dynamic meteorology to undergraduate college students. Unlike other textbooks, this textbook takes the time to show alot more of the steps in the derivation of equations used in meteorology. Of course this has added to the size of the book but the fact that the author has taken the care to include this in his book is quite helpful for those learning meteorology. It is a useful reference book.

5 out of 5 stars All the weather plus the mathematics behind it.......2002-04-29

This is the second of two volumes by Bluestein and it is filled with useful information and presented in an engaging manner. Many meteorology textbooks (unfortunately) choose between presenting synoptic meteorology and dynamic meteorology--you're left to synthesize them yourself. The great virtue of this volume is that they're both here in all their glory, so you not only learn the mathematics but also get a feel for modern synoptic analysis. Bluestein is perhaps most famous for his tornado chases, but this volume proves that he is also a master of theory.

    4 out of 5 stars Holton Takes A Vacation.......2000-08-30

Definitely a much more readable and applicable discussion of dynamic meteorology than the archetype book by Holton.

Part II is more geered toward operational forecasting and if you had dynamic meteo in college and still have Holton, only purchase Part II. Part I is a nice review of what you should have all ready known and only really used again since college if you are in grad school...otherwise, Part 2 is great, detailing synoptic wx systems and the interaction with QGOE forcing, etc...a nice comprehensive review, and some things new too, well worth the buy (only drawback is the price, ouch!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Lovley Lovley book.......2000-05-17

I loved how Howard used his adventures to write this book and it helps other people relize how hard his job is and how dangerous it is...also at the same time exciting....I think this book was a wonderful enjoyment to read.
