Book Description
The revision of this highly acclaimed text is designed for use in advanced physics courses--intermediate level juniors or first year graduates. Basic knowledge of vector calculus and Fourier analysis is assumed. In this edition, a very accessible macroscopic view of classical electromagnetics is presented with emphasis on integrating electromagnetic theory with physical optics. The presentation follows the historical development of physics, culminating in the final chapter, which uses four-vector relativity to fully integrate electricity with magnetism.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for beginning graduate students.......2003-12-20
This book covers many important topics in electromagnetic theory including many areas in Optics, like diffraction,..etc. It fills a gap between the undergrad text books and the more advance graduate EM texts (like Jackson's,.. etc). The materials are easy to follow and understand with no lack of mathematical rigors.
Execllent text for beginning graduate students.
The former review is for the wrong book........2001-06-19
Hi folks I just wrote this to caution you that the former reviewer is inadverently reviewing the MECHANICS book by the same author. To be short I would give this book four stars. It does a little bit of static phenomena and boundary value problems and jumps to radiation justifying the title. The level of the book is in between a grad course and an undergrad course. I think it is ideal for self study for grad students.
Challenging but well worth the effort for motivated students.......1999-06-20
An excellent textbook on classical dynamics for the 'grown-up' student who wants mathematical rigor along with physical insights. Working through this book requires considerable effort and thought on the student's part, but is well worth the time spent. Highly recommended for the serious student who is not afraid of hard work.

Winner of the 2006 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award!
A comprehensive treatment of the principles, mathematics, and statistics of image science
In today’s visually oriented society, images play an important role in conveying messages. From seismic imaging to satellite images to medical images, our modern society would be lost without images to enhance our understanding of our health, our culture, and our world.
Foundations of Image Science presents a comprehensive treatment of the principles, mathematics, and statistics needed to understand and evaluate imaging systems. The book is the first to provide a thorough treatment of the continuous-to-discrete, or CD, model of digital imaging. Foundations of Image Science emphasizes the need for meaningful, objective assessment of image quality and presents the necessary tools for this purpose. Approaching the subject within a well-defined theoretical and physical context, this landmark text presents the mathematical underpinnings of image science at a level that is accessible to graduate students and practitioners working with imaging systems, as well as well-motivated undergraduate students.
Destined to become a standard text in the field, Foundations of Image Science covers:
- Mathematical Foundations: Examines the essential mathematical foundations of image science
- Image Formation–Models and Mechanisms: Presents a comprehensive and unified treatment of the mathematical and statistical principles of imaging, with an emphasis on digital imaging systems and the use of SVD methods
- Image Quality: Provides a systematic exposition of the methodology for objective or task-based assessment of image quality
- Applications: Presents detailed case studies of specific direct and indirect imaging systems and provides examples of how to apply the various mathematical tools covered in the book
- Appendices: Covers the prerequisite material necessary for understanding the material in the main text, including matrix algebra, complex variables, and the basics of probability theory
Customer Reviews:
Tremendous Work and Very Clear.......2006-11-29
This is one of the few books that I will always treasure. Why? Because it is very clear. It has very very good discussions on everything it treats, and it treats a ton of material. In my engineering career, I have read or tried to read many many textbooks and this stands up as one of the absolute best. Barrett and Meyers give exquisite expositions on all of the mathematics necessary to study image science and many other related fields. For example, its treatment on probability, random processes, decision and estimation theory is actually better, more clear and more complete than many standard textbooks on the subject. If I get stuck reading any of them, I refer to this book and am saved.
I only wish they would issue it in two or three volumes. It is so ponderous (yet beautifully put together) if you carry it around you will get big muscles and get a good cardio workout!
I own it and leave it at home and I had the library at work get me a copy which I leave at work. If I want exercise I will go to my health club!
IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY OF THE 146 BUCKS IT COSTS.
If you want a great textbook to learn this technology from dont hesitate to buy it. You may need two - one for home and one for work, if your company wont buy you one.
Really impressed.
Correction to the quotation from JEI.......2006-08-20
I was the reviewer for this book in the Journal of Electronic Imaging.
The quotation from my review in JEI as it appears on this site should read:
"...a worthwhile addition to the armamentarium of any serious researcher in image science and will be an oft-quoted reference for many years to come." (Journal of Electronic Imaging, April-June 2005)
The corrections pertains to the word, oft-quoted, which has, for some reason, appeared as "opt-quoted" on this site in addition to the reference, "Journal of Electronic Imaging" instead of "Journal of Electrical Imaging"
This book, of course, is outstanding as I have stated in my review in the JEI.
Extremely thorough and rigorous resource.......2006-02-10
This book always amazes me whenever I use it for the absolutely incredible amount of material that it covers in such depth. I had the tremendous good fortune to have taken a Physical Optics course with Prof. Barrett, and it would be impossible to believe that one person can know so much unless you have personally talked with him about science or had a class with him. The rumor in the department is that Dr. Barrett is the only professor to at one time or other have taught ALL of the department's core graduate courses during his career at the College of Optical Sciences. Furthermore, he is one of the rare scientists who is an authority in his field both theoretically and experimentally, so you do not get a one-sided perspective as can often happen with science texts. The book reflects his vast knowledge, expertise, rigor, and thoroughness.
Of course, the book has several chapters on mathematical formalism, including the linear algebra, dirac delta function, Fourier theory, and group theory. The imaging theory is there, as well as diffraction theory. He covers photon statistics and detection, including the necessary quantum mechanics. He covers several advanced imaging concepts that I haven't any idea about myself. You probably could not find a more comprehensive book in the field of imaging and physical optics. Another benefit is that, at least for the chapters I have used, the individual chapters seem to stand well on their own and you are not forced to study the book in order.
This book is not for the faint of heart in any respect. The material itself is not for the faint of heart: it is extremely rigorous and will require your careful attention, but I believe it is well explained and manageable for someone who is serious about learning it. The size of the book is not for the faint of heart. I would hate to have to carry this thing around much (>1500 pages!!). The price is nothing to sneeze at either, at least for an impoverished graduate student like me, but Dr. Barrett told us that if you calculate the cost per equation, it may be one of the cheapest books on the market. Well, you get what you pay for. As far as anyone in the class found out, there are no typos, either. (Really. We were looking for them). This is certainly a relief for anyone who has much experience shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive science textbooks.
I do not consider this book to be introductory material, but it is quite likely as close to exhaustive as anything you are apt to encounter in the physical sciences. If you are very serious about imaging or physical optics, this book will be an invaluable resource.
Very good and the most complete of the field!.......2004-02-18
The authors have done a great work. The book is complete and detailed. It is helping me a lot in the beginning of my Ph.D. It's really a must have in the field!

Nanotechnology, science, and engineering spearhead the 21st century revolution that is leading to fundamental breakthroughs in the way materials, devices, and systems are understood, designed, made, and used. With contributions from a host of world-class experts and pioneers in the field, this handbook sets forth the fundamentals of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), studies their fabrication, and explores some of their most promising applications. It provides comprehensive information and references for nanoscale structures, devices, and systems, molecular technology and nanoelectromechanical theory, and promises to become a standard reference for the field.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Young Field.......2004-01-11
Is Nanotech just more hype? Blue sky research with no practical products in sight?
This book hopes to dispell that by presenting a solid survey of the field. It does require a fairly high technical level in the reader, concentrated in engineering. This may be a good sign. Things are not relegated to pure research. Indeed, several chapters discuss possible biotech and molecular electronics applications. Though you should be warned that these might be harder to build than expressed in the confident tone of some authors.
Some readers may see parallels to a description of the semiconductor industry circa 1955, when some devices had been built, but the full potential was only just being suspected. If so, perhaps all the more reason for you to go into nanotech, using this book as one of your guides.

Book Description
Providing an introduction to electronic materials and device concepts for the major areas of current and future information technology, the value of this book lies in its focus on the underlying principles. Illustrated by contemporary examples, these basic principles will hold, despite the rapid developments in this field, especially emphasizing nanoelectronics.
There is hardly any field where the links between basic
science and application are tighter than in nanoelectronics & information technology. As an example, the design of resonant tunneling transistors, single electron devices or molecular electronic structures is simply inconceivable without delving deep into quantum mechanics.
This textbook is primarily aimed at students of physics,
electrical engineering and information technology, as well as material science in their 3rd year and higher. It is equally of interest to professionals wanting a broader overview of this hot topic.
"Nanoelectronics and Information Technology" by Rainer Waser and his colleagues is an outstanding compendium of
information about an exciting new field. Owing to its high quality and complete coverage of the many topics in this area, this well referenced book will have a long and very useful life as a primary text for students experienced and new in nanoelectronics. It is a very impressive book." (Richard Siegel)

A Monumental Book.......2004-06-03
I am a microelectronics circuit designer with some physics/EE background. I believe this is "The Comprehension of Entire Human History on Science and Technology", done beautifully. Although the focus is rather on physical science area (with exceptional reviews on process/device technology), it also deals with philosophically intriguing topics like ultimate computer and quantum computing. In order to get a decent review for each topic, you need to spend several days in library. This book does it in one book-length beautifully. I show my respect to the Editor Prof. Waser for the insight and endeavor for this book.

Wonderful Book with Superb Graphics........2004-04-27
Some books on nanotechnology are just trying to capitalize on the nanotechnology craze. There are some books on nanotechnology that are not worth buying. But not this one. This book is hefty (1000 pages). If you want to learn about nanotechnology and read about the fundamental physics and chemistry of nanoscale materials and devices, this is the book to buy. This book can give you a very quick tutorial of what you want to know immediately without the hassle of having to read through boring pages of unnecessary stuffs. I am very impressed with the professionally drawn color illustrations and typesetting. As the title suggests, this book also covers IT-related devices (eg memories, data storage, and data transmissions). You can see that a lot of time and efforts by numerous people have been collectively spent in preparing this book. If you are not sure which book on nanotechnology to buy, but need something that is a bit more encyclopedic with adequate background materials instead of just reviewing current trends, then buy this one first.
Electronics goes nano.......2003-10-29
The title "Nanoelectronics and Information Technology" was extremely attractive and, hence, I decided to buy this multi-authored book as soon as it became available on the market. This monumental 1000-pages book comprises 40 chapters which have been organized in 8 sections:
(I) Fundamentals, (II) Technology and analysis, (III) Logic devices, (IV) Random access memories, (V) Mass storage devices, (VI) Data transmission and interfaces, (VII) Sensor arrays and imaging systems, and (VIII) Displays.
Fully covering each of the above fields would require far more space than that available in a book of this same size. Hence, the editor has done the clever choice of writing chapters 20-30 pages long, each of them sufficiently self contained. For example, the (sub)field of Molecular Electronics (my favorite topic) is treated in ch.20, pp. 503-525. This chapter ends with 66 references, enough for further study. The closely related subject on Organic Light Emitting Devices (ch. 38) can be consulted by checking either the general index at the end of the book or the table of contents. Placing some keywords at the end of the former chapter, however, would have greatly facilitated my jump to the latter. Chapters seems being too independent from each other. This, I think, is the weakest point of this monumental opera. The book contains plenty of good graphs and figures, many of them colored, placed nearby the text. Taking into account both the huge amount of information contained in this book and the difficulties in amalgamating the many different topics in this rapidly developing field, I finally decided to rate this book with five stars.

Book Description
Entering its third edition, the bestselling Handbook of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields is a definitive reference for researching bioeffects of static, low-, and high-frequency fields. It presents a well-rounded perspective on the biological effects of electromagnetic (EM) fields, authored by active contributors to the field with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds, approaches, and interpretations. The Handbook incorporates up-to-date data, results, and discussions-many based on studies performed since the 1995 publication of the previous edition-into two cohesive volumes. The first focuses on bioengineering and biophysical aspects, including molecular-level mechanisms. It contains new material describing the physics, engineering, and chemistry aspects of electromagnetic fields to explain their interactions with biological systems. The second concentrates on biological and medical aspects, including physiological effects, medical applications, and exposure standards. It examines some of the latest applications EM fields, particularly for medical treatment and diagnostics. Improved cross-referencing across both volumes facilitates the association of interrelated concepts. The Handbook of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Third Edition forms a comprehensive, yet accessible source leading to a greater knowledge of electromagnetic hazards, potential applications of EM fields, and a better understanding of biological processes.
Customer Reviews:
Updated and Expanded Third Edition.......2007-01-07
While the human body (and of course animal bodies) are biological in nature, they have a strong electrical contant in the way that nerves pass messages and the way that the brain thinks. It is only lately, however, that the interaction between electromagnetic fields and the body's own electromagnetic activities have begun to be studied from a rigorous standpoint.
Now in its third edition, this two volume set reflects the latest research in the field. It is an exhaustive look into the field with articles from a wide collection of researchers currently working in the field. Virtually all of the articles reflect research that has been done in the years since the last edition was published in 1995.
While this includes such subjects as the use of cell phones and living under high voltage transmission lines, it also includes the use of EM fields in medical treatments, exposure limits, physiological effects and more. This book continues to be the definitive book on the subject.

Book Description
Linking physics fundamentals to modern technology-a highly applied primer for students and engineers
Reminding us that modern inventions-new materials, information technologies, medical technological breakthroughs-are based on well-established fundamental principles of physics, Jasprit Singh integrates important topics from quantum mechanics, statistical thermodynamics, and materials science, as well as the special theory of relativity. He then goes a step farther and applies these fundamentals to the workings of electronic devices-an essential leap for anyone interested in developing new technologies.
From semiconductors to nuclear magnetic resonance to superconducting materials to global positioning systems, Professor Singh draws on wide-ranging applications to demonstrate each concept under discussion. He downplays extended mathematical derivations in favor of results and their real-world design implication, supplementing the book with nearly 100 solved examples, 120 figures, and 200 end-of-chapter problems.
Modern Physics for Engineers provides engineering and physics students with an accessible, unified introduction to the complex world underlying today's design-oriented curriculums. It is also an extremely useful resource for engineers and applied scientists wishing to take advantage of research opportunities in diverse fields.

Perfect for engineers.......2000-08-22
This book covers topics in modern physics that are the most important for the engineer. It makes an equilibrated use of figures, tables and conceptual diagrams, thus providing a clear guideline for the student. It also provides small but interesting historic introductions in some chapters, that also help to understand why different theories appeared. This could all be done without forgetting the necessary theoretical and mathematical rigorousness. A very good book for engineers.

Engineering becomes Biology.......2006-11-11
In our lab this is universally known as "The Bunny Book", for reasons that you can deduce by looking at the cover. You may also deduce that we refer to it sufficiently frequently to have given it a nickname. The reason it is simple - it is an outstandingly comprehensive work of reference for all the ideas and history in the burgeoning field of artificial replication.
Biology is the study of things that copy themselves. It used to be that the only examples we had of such things were those that had come about naturally by Darwin's Law of Evolution. But for the first time we are entering an age of intelligent design, with the only intelligence available to do the designing being our own. People are starting to build biological machines to go along with the natural living machines (including ourselves) that have evolved; at the small scale they are mostly doing this using the construction kit supplied by biochemistry; at the large scale they are simply using the ordinary mechanical and electronic components of conventional engineering.
This is one of the main the books upon which the biological revolution that will result will be founded. None of the consequent creations (nor our children) can escape Darwin's Law, of course - that is as fundamental as the Second Law of Thermodynamics upon which it depends. But we are adding an extra source of change to the random mutations that have driven evolution for three and a half billion years: thought-out innovation deduced from accurate scientific models of how matter, energy, and information behave.
Buy this book to get in at the start of the revolution that will give us the most exciting, terrible, and wonderful machines that have ever been made.
Best book every written on Self-Replicating Machines.......2004-12-07
As one of the nearly 100 technical reviewers for this book, I found this is a "must read" that will likely become THE classic reference for self-replicating machine systems. If you are familiar with Freitas' previous work (especially Nanomedicine, volumes I and II, but also the NASA Ames summer study http://www.islandone.org/MMSG/aasm/), then you'll know what to expect, and you won't be disappointed. And with the addition of Ralph Merkle's genius, I'm not surprised that the book is as good as it is.
Kinematic Self-Replicating Machines is an impressively thorough compendium of everything that's known, or has ever been done, in this field, including all theoretical and experimental efforts. The treatment is literally encyclopedic, with over 3000 literature references, hundreds of illustrations, and descriptions of several working systems which have already been built and operated in laboratory settings. KSRM is a surprising readable book that's an important resource for anyone interested in machine self-replication. If you want to learn about the history (all the way from Descartes) to this year's state of the art, especially self-replication of hardware as opposed to software, then this book is the one to get. Yes, it's a bit expensive, but it is truly a magnificent resource.
The book contains an exhaustive history of self-replicating machines, including von Neumann's studies and information-based replicators like computer viruses, proposals for self-replicating factories and actual achievements of self-replicating devices, and a complete discussion of proposals for microscale replicators which includes a description (for context) of the many ways biology replicates.
The authors also provide a new general taxonomy of replicators with a 137-dimensional classification system that subsumes all known actual and proposed self-replicating machine systems (though I'm sure that future systems and proposals will include more). No taxonomy ever proposed has come anywhere close to this level of comprehensiveness and specificity. There's also a technical discussion of many theoretical issues involving replicators, including replication time, minimum replicator size, replicator complexity, the exponential mathematics of replication and replicative manufacturing systems, and lots more.
There is a lot of misinformation out there about self-replication (from science fiction claiming to be based on fact, to ramblings by royalty - thank goodness for the Revolution), so it is really nice to see someone cover all the technical details in one place. The authors distinguish self-replication from self-reproduction, and in their discussion of "Replicators and Public Safety" and elsewhere it is clearly explained how to build safe self-replicating machines that cannot continue functioning in the face of variations, and how to mitigate or eliminate entirely the dangers inherent in possible runaway behaviors of successful machine self-replication processes that might be theorized. Reading this book makes you realize that a vast amount of work has already been done, but a great deal more remains to be done. KSRM is a significant landmark along the road to our technological future and urges us to pursue many possible pathways to practical success, including most prominently several approaches to molecular manufacturing involving nanotechnology and molecular assemblers (www.MolecularAssembler.com).

Fundamental to understand how scientific ideas evolved over time.......2006-12-18
This is a book by E.T. Whittaker, of "A Course of Modern Analysis"-fame (please check it out on Amazon if you have never heard of that classic).
For scientists and engineers, it is fundamental to have a minimum understanding of how scientific ideas evolved over time. Recall the debate over the particle versus wave nature of light, and how the two schools of thought took turns as the mainstream theory until they were reconciled in the beginning of the twentieth century (well, not really: there are some rough edges lingering still). The same happens with the currently out-of-favor theory of ether; after abandoning the idea of ether upon the establishment of the theory of Special Relativity, Einstein himself revisited the concept of ether in a different fashion when developing his broader-scoped General Relativity (he actually developed 3 diverse ether models then; check out "Einstein and the Ether" by Ludwik Kostro for an account of this episode). The history of the ether hypothesis is in fact the history of a number of competing theories, each of which entailing a different set of properties for this elusive would-be medium (substance?). Whether replacing one another or co-existing side by side, these theories were very important for the development of physics as we know it today. In this book Whittaker offers an account of that will prove enjoyable, possibly insightful, to physicists and other scientists in general.
