From an OPEC country ..........2001-10-29
Excellent book, easy to read for petroleum engineers yet quite insightful and nicely presented. A great deal of references are useful to direct further reading, this book became my preferred reference in petroleum geology. Highly recommendable.
Altamente recomendable.
From the Titan of petroleum!.......2000-01-05
This second edition surveys the science of petroleum geology. It describes the generation, migration, and entrapment of oil and gas, and outlines the procedures used in their location, evaluation, and production. The topics, appropriate for the geology student (and cyber-cadet seeking abiogenic petroleum anywhere in the universe), include requisite basic material from the fields of petroleum engineering and geophysics. The eight colour plates are packed with useful information.
Selley's writing style is most welcome.

Introduction to Groundwater Modeling.......2003-05-05
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.
This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.
Outdated and of little value.......2001-12-09
I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.
Highly recommended.......2000-03-31
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.
Book Description
This comprehensive volume brings together in a well-organized format the vast experimental data on phase relationships in elements, oxides, and silicates at high temperatures and pressures. It also provides a useful introduction to the basic principles governing phase relationships and
crystal structures of materials, and discusses how the data presented places constraints on possible earth models. The book is an essential resource to all those concerned with processes at depth within the earth, and is of particular significance to those doing research on the seismic structure of
the mantle and on mantle convection.
Book Description
Studying the distribution of certain elements, present in very low concentrations in igneous and metamorphic rocks, can yield important clues about the rocks' origin and evolution. Trace elements do not give rise to characteristic minerals, but their behaviour can be modelled to provide historical information about the source magma. This book brings together the essential theory required to understand the behaviour of trace elements in magmas and magma-derived rocks. It presents a wide range of models and mechanisms which explain trace element distribution. Trace Elements in Magmas provides an excellent resource for graduate students, petrologists, geochemists and mineralogists, as well as researchers in geophysics and materials science.

Book Description
The science of physical hydrology centers on the physical principles involved in the study of the occurrence and movement of water on and beneath the earth's surface. Because of its far-reaching implications for other disciplines, physical hydrology is of interest to students in fields ranging from the environmental sciences to engineering, policy studies, and even law.
In this introductory-level text the authors begin from the premise that the complexities of modern hydrology can be mastered by understanding basic physical principles of fluid movement. Focusing first on analysis at the scale of a single watershed, they then introduce the mechanics of fluids in closed conduits and open channels. They reevaluate catchment processes in light of fluid mechanics, open channel hydraulics, and groundwater flow. In a concluding chapter, they stress the importance of understanding water movement in the environment by exploring the relationship of hydrology to such disciplines as atmospheric science, ecology, and geology.
Accompanying the book is a CD-ROM, which provides a Web version of the text (Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later required). Included are video demonstrations, additional content and interactive review questions, and extensive links to facilitate study and review. Instructions for using the Web version are included. Also on the CD-ROM are simulation tools to study hydrological processes (MATLAB student version 5.0 required).
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book by any standard.......2004-09-09
This is a sort of elementary textbook, and should help biologists, chemists, environmentalists, and geologists to obtain fundamentals of hydraulics and hydrology. I am a professional hydrologist, but still enjoyed reading that book. The main value is in proper selection of the subjects, and exceptionally clear explanation. Reading other books, many a times I had a feeling that the author had not fully understood the subject. The authors of Elements of Physical Hydrology have a great talent to make any subject simple, and they know what they are talking about. Excellent book!
Cutting-edge technology textbook will set the trend for 2000.......1998-05-04
This book comes with an accompanying CD-ROM that contains the entire book, as well as powerful features that cannot be used within the constaints of paper and ink. Movies, appendices, internet links, and real-time mathematical models can be run in the context of a well-written text. Helpful interactive end-of-chapter Q/A sections and the ability to search though the text or automatically click linked words to see their definition in the gloassary is yet unparalelled in today's classrooms. A must have just for the approach to teaching!

Book Description
The rhizosphere in soil environments refers to the narrow zone of soil influenced by the root and exudates. Microbial populations in the rhizosphere can be 10 - 100 times larger than the populations in the bulk soil. Therefore, the rhizosphere is bathed in root exudates and microbial metabolites and the chemistry and biology at the soil-root interface is governed by biotic (plant roots, microbes) and abiotic (physical and chemical) interactions.
The research on biotic and abiotic interactions in the rhizosphere should, thus, be an issue of intense interest for years to come. This book, which consists of 15 chapters, addresses a variety of issues on fundamentals of microscopic levels and the impact on food chain contamination and the terrestrial ecosystem.
It is an essential reference work for chemists and biologists studying environmental systems, as well as earth, soil and environmental scientists.
