Book Description
Potable water supplies that contain arsenic concentrations high enough to pose a human health hazard are a problem of international proportion. Surface water and ground water are both at risk of arsenic contamination. However, most incidences of high concentrations of arsenic have been reported for ground water, which is the subject of this book. The geochemistry of arsenic in aqueous environments is complex. This book consolidates much of what is known about the geochemistry of arsenic and provides new information on relationships between high concentrations of arsenic in ground water and geochemical environments. The subject matter of this book ranges in scope from molecular-scale geochemical processes that affect the mobility of arsenic in ground water, to arsenic contaminated ground water at the national scale. Chapters were contributed by an international group of research scientists from a broad range of backgrounds.
Information includes reviews of existing thermodynamic data for arsenic containing mineral phases and aqueous arsenic species, factors that affect adsorption of arsenic in common ground water environments, and spectroscopic techniques used to determine the chemical reactions controlling arsenic partitioning between solid and liquid phases at particle-water interfaces. A significant portion of this book is devoted to regions where high concentrations of arsenic in ground waters have a natural source. The original source of arsenic can vary; however, arsenic becomes concentrated in the solid and aqueous phases of an aquifer given appropriate geochemical conditions. Often, high arsenic concentrations in the solid phase become mobile if there is a change in ground water chemistry, either natural or anthropogenically induced. Research presented in this book covers several different geologic settings and provides explanations of the geochemical processes that have caused the arsenic concentrations observed in ground water. In situ remediation of arsenic-contaminated ground water can provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to above ground treatment. One chapter of this book discusses natural remediation of an aquifer where naturally occurring arsenic was mobilized by leachate from a landfill. Two chapters discuss results from field experiments designed to alter aquifer geochemistry in order to remove arsenic from ground water prior to withdrawal.
This book will be of interest to scientists working in the field of arsenic, health professionals interested in arsenic exposure, and water-resource managers and regulators.
Book Description
Are there geographic clusters of disease cases, or hotspots of crime? Can the geography of air quality be matched to where people hospitalized for respiratory complaints actually live? Spatial data is data about the world where the attribute of interest and its location on the earth's surface are recorded. This comprehensive overview of the subject shows how the above questions can be tackled. It is written for students and researchers in geography, economics, social science, the environmental sciences and statistics.

College Text.......2007-01-05
This was the required text for my environmental geology class at university. I found the book to be okay. A good presentation of the various geological changes/hazards in our environment, but it does not provide indepth detail. I feel it would be better applied in a high school level course.
Remember, it is a text book........2006-12-12
I bought this book for an environmental geology course at Idaho State University as part of my interdisciplinary studies in the environment. Keller's book is informative and comprehensive providing both wide coverage and indepth calculations and examples of how to measure environmental events quantitatively. The professor of the course used the book's material in class; however, he was often critical of the simplicity of the illustrations and graphs. I will keep the book as a reference for environmental processes and human impact on the environment. I will not read the book for pleasure, though. It is a text book and can put a reader to sleep quickly.
Great text for earth science teachers!.......2006-06-15
I teach middle school earth science as well as an earth science class for practicing teachers. Keller's work is excellent for science educators because it includes the environmental aspects of earth science. It takes teachers beyond the typical approaches in most earth science texts and creates a deeper and more wholistic understanding. It is the best text I have found for my earth science for teachers course and I highly recommend it.
Excellent New 8th Edition - the Best Seller for 2000.......2000-01-14
This new Eighth Edition of Enviromental Geology is welcomed by the geology profession in the year 2000. Professor Edward Keller, a leading geomorphologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has performed a timely update of his national best-seller to include new information in earthquake hazards, new hyperlinks for students to study geologic hazard information on the Internet, and expansion of two chapters on water supply and water pollution. Excellent color photographs and color diagrams are used throughout. The 8th Edition features use of quantification ("putting some numbers on"), case histories of cogent interest to students, closer looks at important concepts, key terms, study questions, and web hyperlinks. This textbook is highly recommended and will be most appropriate at the Freshman or Sophomore level. It does not assume prior coursework in geology or earth science. It continues to be the #1 seller in North America and is taught throughout all campuses of the University of California system.

Geochemistry of Natural Waters.......2004-06-17
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters. I found this to be a very poor text to use. The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving. I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry. I would not recommend use of this text.
Needs Work.......2001-11-09
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater. Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times. I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.
Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts.......2001-01-18
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.
However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.
If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.
Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.
Esencial para los geologos.......2000-10-18
Libro muy sencillo de leer y sus ejemplos son muy didacticos
This book overcomplicates even the simplest of topics........1998-10-29
This book fails to explain topics in a manner suitable for beginners in this field. I recomend choosing any other book over this one.
Book Description
This book introduces the principles of remote sensing from an Earth resource perspective. It describes a) the fundamental characteristics of electromagnetic radiation and how the energy interacts with Earth materials such as vegetation, water, soil and rock, b) how the energy reflected or emitted from these materials is recorded using a variety of remote sensing instruments (e.g., cameras, multispectral scanners, hyperspectral instruments, RADAR), and c) how we can extract fundamental biophysical or land use/land cover information from the remote sensor data. The history of remote sensing, the principles of visual photo-interpretation, and photogrammetry are also presented. Application chapters focus on remote sensing of vegetation, water, urban land use, and soil/rock and geomorphic features. The book was written for physical, natural, and social scientists interested in how remote sensing of the environment can be used to solve real-world problems. The following features make this book easy to comprehend and apply: a) it contains hundreds of illustrations specially designed to make complex principles easy to understand, b) a substantial reference list at the end of each chapter, c) the 8.5 x 11" format allows the remote sensing images and diagrams to be easily interpreted, d) 32 pages of color are used to display remote sensing images or biophysical information that may be extracted from remote sensor data, and e) an Appendix provides Internet addresses for the most important sources of remote sensing information. Exercises and book illustrations are made available to instructors via the author's website. This book is a companion to "Introductory Digital Image Processing: A Remote Sensing Perspective" (Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1996) which introduces the fundamentals of digital image analysis. It is ideal for undergraduate or graduate courses in airphoto interpretation and remote sensing.
Customer Reviews:
Best overall coverage of the topic I've found.......2005-11-08
This text found its way into my collection during my undergraduate career as required for a Geography course in remote sensing. I ejoyed it as an introduction to the topic but later found myself returning to it time and again in graduate school working on a remote sensing thesis. I keep on finding new reasons to open it up in my business, at Terra Prints. It's exhaustive while not exhausting. Worth buying.
Roland Clark
excellent!.......2001-02-18
This book covers broad area of remote sensing; nature, physics, photogrametry, history, various types of sensors (multispectral, thermal, Microwabe..), earth resource perspective(vegetation, water, urban landscape, soil&mineral...). So if you want to learn how remote sesning are employed in this world, I strongly recommend to buy this book. if you want to learn digital image processing, you should buy the sister book "Introductory Digital Image Processing: remote sensing perspective".
All sections (especially vegetation) contains alot of infomation and easy to understand with nice figures and pictures.
Only one fault of this book is this price...
