Statistics for Petroleum Engineers and Geoscientists (Handbook of Petroleum Exploration and Production)
P. W. M. Corbett , Larry W. Lake , and David J. Goggin Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444505520 |
Book Description
Geostatistics is a common tool in reservoir characterisation. Several texts discuss the subject, however this book differs in its approach and audience from currently available material. Written from the basics of statistics it covers only those topics that are needed for the two goals of the text: to exhibit the diagnostic potential of statistics and to introduce the important features of statistical modeling. This revised edition contains expanded discussions of some materials, in particular conditional probabilities, Bayes Theorem, correlation, and Kriging. The coverage of estimation, variability, and modeling applications have been updated. Seventy examples illustrate concepts and show the role of geology for providing important information for data analysis and model building. Four reservoir case studies conclude the presentation, illustrating the application and importance of the earlier material. This book can help petroleu

Geostatistics for Engineers and Earth Scientists
Ricardo A. Olea Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0792385233 |
Book Description
Engineers and earth scientists are increasingly interested in quantitative methods for the analysis, interpretation, and modeling of data that imperfectly describe natural processes or attributes measured at geographical locations. Inference from imperfect knowledge is the realm of classical statistics. In the case of many natural phenomena, auto- and cross- correlation preclude the use of classical statistics. The appropriate choice in such circumstances is geostatistics, a collection of numerical techniques for the characterization of spatial attributes similar to the treatment in time series analysis of auto-correlated temporal data. As in time series analysis, most geostatistical techniques employ random variables to model the uncertainty that goes with the assessments. The applicability of the methods is not limited by the physical nature of the attributes.Customer Reviews:
Good reference for Geostat.......2004-02-23
From "Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment," 14(3)207-209.......2000-10-03
This single sentence is also the philosophy of this book. By keeping a constant link and perfect balance between theoretical and methodological concerns, the book allows the novice reader to discover step by step the exciting realm of geostatistics and its applications. As explained by the author, this textbook is the result of a long teaching experience to engineering students at the graduate level. After reading this book, I have to say that I wish I could have had the chance to be one of his students when I was struggling myself with theory as a Ph.D. student a few years ago.
A requirement for reading the book is a college-level knowledge in matrix algebra, probability, and statistics. I have found that in spite of its obviousness, this clarification is sometimes lacking in other introductory books, which tend to present the material in such a way the reader could wrongly believe that he or she will be able to grasp the basics and even the more advanced results without the necessity of having a basic command of the disciplines (probability and statistics) that underlie geostatistics. The author also emphasizes that "many of the suggestions of my colleagues were incorporated into the final text, but I reserve the right, and assume the blame, for disagreeing in a few instances." This sentence shows us that beyond the various streams that exist in the field, the author had in mind the concern of presenting a view of the field as objective as possible to the newcomer, which is a very responsible attitude.
The book includes 14 chapters. Each chapter is organized in a very clear fashion, by making distinctions between what is a definition, lemma, theorem, corollary, assumption, or algorithm. This helps the reader avoid confusion about a pure theoretical property and widely accepted methodological ways of having the job done. A proof for each lemma, theorem, and corollary, as direct as possible, is provided each time and allows the curious reader to discover why things are the way they are. This theoretical presentation is accompanied in many places by practical guidelines and discussions that help the reader to make the step from theory to practice. Numerous, very practical, exercises are proposed, as well as commented and illustrated solutions. Only the most classical techniques are presented, allowing the reader to focus on the essentials, rather than being overwhelmed by numerous variations on the same topic and the unavoidable and often confusing discussion about advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Adequate additional references are provided for the reader who wants to go further herself or himself.
I would conclude by saying that this book, in my opinion, is one of the best introductions to geostatistics that I have ever read. It is a perfect balance between theory and methodological considerations. The presentation of the various techniques is made with a permanent concern for the comprehension of the underlying theory, without neglecting the illustrative part that helps the reader to fully understand the implications of the developments. It is concise and yet complete enough for helping the newcomer to find his or her way in the meanders of this rapidly evolving discipline. I am sure that even the more experienced geostatisticians will read it with great pleasure and will find for it a very special place on their bookshelf. It is the kind of book that you enjoy recommending to anyone who wants a good starting point in a field. I will personally use it as reference book for my students. In summary, I very strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have an introductory, consistent, and unbiased view of geostatistics.

Unsaturated Zone Hydrology for Scientists and Engineers
James A. Tindall , and James R. Kunkel Manufacturer: Pearson Education ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0136607136 |
Book Description
This book presents systematic, integrated A-to-Z coverage of state-of-the-art unsaturated zone hydrology. Multi-disciplinary in approach, it provides both a soil physics and an engineering approach to unsaturated zone hydrology. Coverage begins with the basic physical properties and the behavior of clays, and moves on to contaminant transport and other parameters such as spatial variability, scaling, and fractals in the earth sciences. KEY TOPICS: Details analytical solutions for seven analytical infiltration models. Provides a comprehensive description and equations for performing a detailed water balance used to size and design water-storage facilities, reclamation zones for waste-storage facilities, and other water-management facilities. Presents five analytical models for both deterministic and probabilistic solutions to liquid/vapor flow in the unsaturated zone -- including unique coverage of the derivation and use of a three-dimensional analytical solution for flow of NAPLs in the unsaturated zone. Presents eight analytical models to assess unsaturated zone contaminant levels which are permissible to regulators for protection of underlying ground water. Includes a detailed description of the current technology of site characterization and monitoring devices used in unsaturated zone research -- including illustrations, diagrams of connections, and advantages and disadvantages of each. Illustrates real-world problems typical of sites the authors have worked with during the last 10 years. A reference for practicing engineers and environmental law firms.Customer Reviews:
Splendid Text.......2004-04-01
Great text for both teaching and students.......2004-01-23
I must admit that the previous review from the skier guy in Denver kinda turned me off, but I bought the book anyway and have never regretted it. Actually, I was able to discuss some aspects with the authors and found their insights particularly useful. Without doubt the material is difficult, but it's laid out well here. I found the answered questions very useful before trying the additional questions to which no answers are given.
While the book is likely not perfect I can say to the guy from Denver that if you were lucky enough to take this class from the author then, kudos to you. Also, one thing I have learned is that it's extremely difficult to have as he put it "a decent and intense class" without a good text. My experience has been that the class generally follows the text. If one is poor, usually both are poor.
My recommendation is that this is a great text and one won't go wrong by purchasing it. In my opinion the best chapters are 1-3, 7-10, and 13, but that those are where my skills are concentrated and they are all well thought out and well written. The list of symbols is also very useful although quite lengthy as they include soil science, hydrology, and engineering symbols for the same areas. I didn't catch that at first. I really like the book compared to others I've studied. Best of all, it helped me master this area and gained me a $10k per year raise in my firm.
4.5 stars? You have got to be kidding me........2003-04-17
Once again, the book is good for a refrence if you already know your unsaturated zone science, but forget trying to learn unsat zone hydrolgy from this text unless you have a great prof or 170 IQ. Looking at my book shelf, I have to put this text in the bottom 40%, 2 stars.
Well-prepared and well-presented summary of unsaturated zone.......2001-12-06
The book has an attractive cover with an artist’s rendition of the major processes that occur in the unsaturated zone beneath urban and rural areas. The images on the cover depict well the topics covered. The table of contents is easy to follow and quickly reveals that the book’s subject matter is presented in a logical order. Following the introduction, which includes a brief history of unsaturated zone hydrology, are chapters on the physical properties and characteristics of soils, the behavior of clay-water systems, and the energy status and chemical properties of water. These first few chapters provide an excellent foundation for subsequent ones on water flow (including both unsaturated and saturated zones) and the transport of heat, gas, and contaminants. The book contains another six chapters on topics ranging from soil remediation techniques to spatial variability, scaling, and fractals. A list of symbols is given in one of the appendices, which readers will find helpful.
Three aspects of the book I particularly like. First, questions are given at the end of many sections to test the student’s understanding of the material. Detailed answers to these questions are given at the end of each chapter, as well as additional questions that could be assigned to the students. Second, the book covers a wide range of topics, yet discusses them in sufficient detail to be useful as both a teaching aid and a reference book. Third, the book contains a pleasant blend of theoretical and practical information.
This book is a well-prepared and well-presented summary of unsaturated zone hydrology. It covers a fairly broad range of topics and will be of interest to scientists and engineers engaged in a wide variety of unsaturated zone studies. Even the price is quite reasonable! (...)
Very complete, an excellent teaching and reference text........2001-11-10
There are many completed problem sets in the text that show the students how to logically approach and solve very complex problems. The instructor manual that is available separately for the text has been a life saver. It is accurate and allows me to use my own problem sets that I have designed and collected over the years and it lets me supplement with problems that are worked-out in detail within the manual.
For instructors who wish to teach a more advanced modelling course, this book will allow teaching a highly advanced course if desired.
I found a few errors in nomenclature and some inacuracies in a few of the problems. These were minor and were also listed in the errata of the book, which unfortunately was not shipped from the publisher, but obtained from the authors whom I wrote. They quickly sent it to me.
Thank you James Tindall and James Kunkel for a fine text, one that was too long in coming.

Book Description
Linear Geostatistics covers basic geostatistics from the underlying statistical assumptions, the variogram calculation and modelling through to kriging. The underlying philosophy is to give the students an indepth understanding of the relevant theory and how to put it into practice. This means going into the theory in more detail than most books do, and also linking it with applications. It is assumed that readers, students and professionals alike, are familiar with basic probability and statistics, and matrix algebra needed for solving linear systems. Some reminders on these are given in an appendix at the end of the book. A set of exercises is integrated into the text.Customer Reviews:

wonderful treatment of outlier issues in regression.......2001-05-04
The book came out in 1987 and so it is a little dated. Another reviewer criticizes some of the software that is mentioned. With computer methodology advancing so rapidly one should not expect the state-of-the-art in computing from a 14 year old text. Value it for its exposition and development of the theory.
Easy to follow introduction.......2001-01-08
- The introduction alone is worth half the price of this book. It gives you a very good overview of robust estimators like m-estimators, least median of squares and least trimmed squares. Basically, you could just take the introduction and start implementing, if that's what you want. The author is able to tell how this and that method overcomes a problem and for what price, and all in one paragraph.
What do I need to understand this book?
- The math in this book is kept at an engineer's level, so an introductory course on statistics should be enough to follow the introduction and to get an insight into the following chapters. A lot of examples with real life data and nice plots show how the methods perform.
What's the drawback?
- The author talks a lot about his old-school fortran program called 'PROGRESS' - and eventually comes up with screen dumps (when people were still using terminals) of the program output. He even gives usage information like 'PROGRESS is designed to run on an IBM-PC or a compatible microcomputer. At least 256K RAM must be available.' Neither the source nor the binary is shipped with the book.
- Some new trends in robust statistics are not included, in particular, I do miss the RANSAC.
Conclusion:
- Better get this book from a library and photocopy the introduction. If you're not really interested, the introductory chapter should be enough.
