Please be aware that Dr Merk's comment reflects his views of *all* geostatistics that use random fields, variogram models etc. You can read his page to see his view (which I have never been able to figure out) and look at the AI-GEOSTATS archives for plenty of discussion. In Merks' view, the rest of us are either idiots, lemmings, or have been brainwashed; in most practioner's view, the sort of geostatistics taught in this book has proven to be very useful and seems theoretically-sound.
If you decide that this approach can give useful insight into the natural world (i.e. if you agree with 99% of current practicioners), and especially map and predict, than this book is a thorough, detailed treatment. The dataset is available from the author's home page and also comes with the gstat package of R, so the reader can practice all the techniques.
The sections on co-regionalization are especially strong.
Be aware the notation is somewhat non-standard but it works well, especially for complex co-regionalization equations.
An invalid variant of mathematical statistics.......2002-12-05
Geostatistics for Natural Resources Evaluation is another textbook that violates the requirement of functional independence and ignores the concept of degrees of freedom. This author is one of many who believes that the true variance of the distance-weighted average can be replaced with the pseudo kriging variance of a SET of degrees-of-freedom and variance-deprived functionally dependent kriged estimates formely known as distance-weighted averages. Degrees of freedom, too, are missing in this textbook, which seems to suggest that this concept is as redundant as the variance of the single distance-weighted average.
THE book in geostatisctics.......2001-03-01
This book is the one book one should consult in order to study and apply geostatistics. It is very comprehensive, clear and practical. It presents classical and innovative methods in geostatistics, some of them only now appearing in textbooks.

The book is at first out of reach because of the common notation. After three pages it became self explaining and incredibly usefull. I strongly recommend it to subjets new in geostatistics with a no very strong mathematical background.
One of very few well-written math related books.......1998-08-07
I picked up this book so that I could understand a geostatisical model I was using for petroleum exploration, and it did a beautiful job of laying out the conceptual framework of the math. As a geologist with not so much mathematical background, I was able to pick through the equations and derivations (which I imagine would be useful for those so inclined) to get at the actual substance. This is a surprisingly readable text for a math book, highly recommended.

Highly recommended! This is easily the most comprehensive, scholarly, and up-to-date work in the area.
The authors cover the entire range of geostatistics - structural analysis (variogram fitting), kriging, multivariate and nonlinear methods, conditional simulation, scale effects, and inverse problems. The chapter on geostatistical simulation is particularly impressive, and much unpublished work of Georges Matheron and the Center for Geostatistics at Fontainebleau, France, is made available here for the first time. Practical and theoretical aspects of geostatistics balance each other very nicely.
This is not an introductory text - there are other books in the area which are custom-tailored to beginners - but it is an invaluable, and very carefully written, reference. For anyone applying geostatistical techniques in environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering, or related fields, this book is a must-have!

There are a large number of books on geostatistics, usually introductory books dealing with parts of the subject. The volume by Chiles and Delfiner is THE comprehensive reference book in geostatistics that has been missing up to now.
It covers every part of geostatistics. After a useful introduction and preliminaries, different chapters are devoted successively to structural analysis, kriging, the intrinsic model of order k, multivariate methods, nonlinear methods, conditional simulations, scale effects and inverse problems.
Within each section, the book offers an accurate perspective of the different geostatistical methods. Practical approaches as well as theoretical developments are jointly considered, providing a sound basis to the user.
The writing is fluent, with an extensive documentation and a most helpful index.
The book will benefit those who want to know more about a specific method, as well as those who are looking for different approaches to a given problem. Engineers and earth scientists are increasingly interested in quantitative methods for the analysis, interpretation, and modeling of data that imperfectly describe natural processes or attributes measured at geographical locations. Inference from imperfect knowledge is the realm of classical statistics. In the case of many natural phenomena, auto- and cross- correlation preclude the use of classical statistics. The appropriate choice in such circumstances is geostatistics, a collection of numerical techniques for the characterization of spatial attributes similar to the treatment in time series analysis of auto-correlated temporal data. As in time series analysis, most geostatistical techniques employ random variables to model the uncertainty that goes with the assessments. The applicability of the methods is not limited by the physical nature of the attributes.
Geostatistics for Engineers and Earth Scientists presents a concise introduction to geostatistics with an emphasis on detailed explanations of methods that are parsimonious, nonredundant, and through the test of time have proved to work satisfactorily for a variety of attributes and sampling schemes. Most of these methods are various forms of kriging and stochastic simulation. The presentation follows a modular approach making each chapter as self-contained as possible, thereby allowing for reading of individual chapters, reducing excessive cross-referencing to previous results and offering possibilities for reviewing similar derivations under slightly different circumstances. Guidelines and rules are offered wherever possible to help choose from among alternative methods and to select parameters, thus relieving the user from making subjective calls based on an experience that has yet to be acquired.
Geostatistics for Engineers and Earth Scientists is intended to assist in the formal teaching of geostatistics or as a self tutorial for anybody who is motivated to employ geostatistics for sampling design, data analysis, or natural resource characterization. Real data sets are used to illustrate the application of the methodology.

I strongly recommend this book for reference and self study. It contains tons of useful definitions, theorems,lemmas, etc.., all with proofs. The algorithms are presented in a very clear and detailed way. The assumptions are stated clearly. It helps a lot with the math and derivations.

One could wonder how a new textbook in geostatistics would have a chance to offer something new and fresh to the reader, when there are so many of them already available on the market. The answer is contained in a sentence that could not be better and more clearly summarized than by the author himself, in the introductory chapter: "Derivations in mathematical books are unnecessarily general, resulting in a complexity that tends to intimidate the uninitiated, while explanations in geostatistical books are cryptically short--to the point that most readers end up taking the derivations for granted."
This single sentence is also the philosophy of this book. By keeping a constant link and perfect balance between theoretical and methodological concerns, the book allows the novice reader to discover step by step the exciting realm of geostatistics and its applications. As explained by the author, this textbook is the result of a long teaching experience to engineering students at the graduate level. After reading this book, I have to say that I wish I could have had the chance to be one of his students when I was struggling myself with theory as a Ph.D. student a few years ago.
A requirement for reading the book is a college-level knowledge in matrix algebra, probability, and statistics. I have found that in spite of its obviousness, this clarification is sometimes lacking in other introductory books, which tend to present the material in such a way the reader could wrongly believe that he or she will be able to grasp the basics and even the more advanced results without the necessity of having a basic command of the disciplines (probability and statistics) that underlie geostatistics. The author also emphasizes that "many of the suggestions of my colleagues were incorporated into the final text, but I reserve the right, and assume the blame, for disagreeing in a few instances." This sentence shows us that beyond the various streams that exist in the field, the author had in mind the concern of presenting a view of the field as objective as possible to the newcomer, which is a very responsible attitude.
The book includes 14 chapters. Each chapter is organized in a very clear fashion, by making distinctions between what is a definition, lemma, theorem, corollary, assumption, or algorithm. This helps the reader avoid confusion about a pure theoretical property and widely accepted methodological ways of having the job done. A proof for each lemma, theorem, and corollary, as direct as possible, is provided each time and allows the curious reader to discover why things are the way they are. This theoretical presentation is accompanied in many places by practical guidelines and discussions that help the reader to make the step from theory to practice. Numerous, very practical, exercises are proposed, as well as commented and illustrated solutions. Only the most classical techniques are presented, allowing the reader to focus on the essentials, rather than being overwhelmed by numerous variations on the same topic and the unavoidable and often confusing discussion about advantages and disadvantages of each of them. Adequate additional references are provided for the reader who wants to go further herself or himself.
I would conclude by saying that this book, in my opinion, is one of the best introductions to geostatistics that I have ever read. It is a perfect balance between theory and methodological considerations. The presentation of the various techniques is made with a permanent concern for the comprehension of the underlying theory, without neglecting the illustrative part that helps the reader to fully understand the implications of the developments. It is concise and yet complete enough for helping the newcomer to find his or her way in the meanders of this rapidly evolving discipline. I am sure that even the more experienced geostatisticians will read it with great pleasure and will find for it a very special place on their bookshelf. It is the kind of book that you enjoy recommending to anyone who wants a good starting point in a field. I will personally use it as reference book for my students. In summary, I very strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have an introductory, consistent, and unbiased view of geostatistics.

Geostatistics violates the requirement of functional independence and ignores the concept of degrees of freedom. As a result, geostatistics cannot possibly provide unbiased statistical inferences such as confidence limits for metal contents and grades of reserves. Geostatisticians replaced the true variance of a distance-weighted average with the pseudo variance of a SET of degrees-of-freedom and variance-deprived functionally dependent distance-weighted averages. Those who want to embrace geostatistical thinking should first study the properties of variances as decribed in Volk's Applied Statistics for Engineers.
Very good introduction to Geostatistics.......2000-11-16
This book is an excellent introduction to the somewhat difficult field of geostatistics. The examples in the book are based on the analysis of a digital elevation model transformed into data variables. This approach works very well and the explanatory text is very readable and understandable. Initially I thought that the math would make difficult reading but I am pleased to be wrong. The basics of Geostatistics can be understood from this book without having to translate the formulae ! An alternative very quick introduction to Geostatistics may be found in Burrough and McDonnell - Principles of Geographical Information Systems pp 132-161. My background is in Geology & GIS.
Excellent introduction into the field.......1999-06-22
This book does an excellent job outlining the theoretical background and applications of geostatistics. After an overview and explanation of a concept (often involving some mathematical notation) the authors drop back and give an "intuitive" approach to the subject that I find incredibly beneficial.
I am a self-taught student of geostats, and this book is my tutor. While I would prefer some formal instruction to augment this text, the text is excellent and a must-read for any student of the field.

Book Description
Linear Geostatistics covers basic geostatistics from the underlying statistical assumptions, the variogram calculation and modelling through to kriging. The underlying philosophy is to give the students an indepth understanding of the relevant theory and how to put it into practice. This means going into the theory in more detail than most books do, and also linking it with applications. It is assumed that readers, students and professionals alike, are familiar with basic probability and statistics, and matrix algebra needed for solving linear systems. Some reminders on these are given in an appendix at the end of the book. A set of exercises is integrated into the text.

This book treats some stuffs in geostatistics including basic stochastic theory, variogram, and various kriging techniques. Though this is an introductory textbook of geostatistics, it's theoretical approach and explanation are clear, creative, and easy to understanding for students who are new to this area. I would like to recommend this book for all of students who have an interest in geostatistics and for experts too.

Book Description
This book introduces the concepts and methods of spatial statistics to geologists and engineers working with oil and gas data, and covers all of the most commonly encountered geostatistical methods for estimation and simulation.
Topics include calculation and modeling of semivariograms, linear methods of kriging, cokriging, nonlinear methods such as indicator kriging and disjunctive kriging, and conditional simulation, including sequential indicator simulation, sequential Gaussian simulation, and simulated annealing. Semivariogram models range from very simple to complex. All of the fundamental semivariogram models are illustrated, along with anisotropic models, hole effects, geometric and zonal models, and the mechanics of fitting models.
For each geostatistical method treated in detail, the author introduces necessary theory and background, describes how the method works, the steps a user must go through, and problems a user might encounter.
The emphasis throughout is on what the practitioner needs to know, and the results that can be expected. The book is replete with examples in two and three dimensions, using real-world data such as porosity and permeability, gas production, structural elevation of a reservoir, and seismic information.
Geostatistics and Petroleum Geology will be an invaluable advanced-level text for students on petroleum engineering and geosciences courses, as well as an important reference for petroleum geologists and petroleum engineers in oil companies worldwide.
