Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

hokey.......2007-08-23
This book makes a lot of assumptions and overgeneralizations. If it were a scientific research report the author would have been laughed out of the room. This is not to say that we should not explore mythical subjects that we may not yet have the science to explain. But the author makes far-reaching claims based on very little evidence. It should have been a philosophy book with more information. As is, it's a small book of grand assumptions and surprisingly little info about water.
A MOST IMPORTANT SECRET INDEED!.......2007-04-10
I am such a fan of Dr. Emoto and his books!! Never could I have gained such a respect and appreciation for the healing power of water were it not for reading Dr. Emoto's books and actually getting to see the crystal formations he captured on film. I have learned to relate to water in ways I never dreamed possible, and I will respect this entity and NEVER take clean water for granted for the rest of my life. Thank you, Dr. Emoto!
Eye-opening.......2007-01-20
Every once in a while a book introduces a new understanding of the world and your eyes are opened to the beauty of the world we live in. This is such a book. It is hope-filled and encouraging in an age when so much of our media information is negative and low-energy. A wonderful, wonderful book!
WOW.......2007-01-17
Amazing! Even though I was familiar with Emoto's work and have heard bits and pieces of the power of water - this book is INCREDIBLE! Fantstic information - wonderful photography!
Fascinating.......2006-12-29
I think that everyone should read this book. It is just what we need in this torn-up world.
Book Description
Given the recent assertions made by the Bush administration, it would seem that coal is a glistening new energy alternative, the answer to the current oil crisis. Few of us realize that coal is already one of America's biggest and most influential industries: "Big Coal" provides more than half of the electricity consumed by Americans today. Every time we flip a light switch or turn on the television, we burn a lump of coal. And coal's dominance is growing. The problem, Jeff Goodell points out in the eye-opening call to action, is that on close examination, the glowing promise of coal quickly turns to ash. Coal mining practices are setting us up for economic and environmental catastrophes. Forty percent of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere each year comes from coal-fired power plants, and pollution from these plants has killed more than half a million Americans in the last two decades. But we've become so complacent about our energy future that we haven't invested in alternatives. In this essential work, Goodell clearly explains how we got here and discusses how we can get out.

The truth about coal.......2007-10-07
Jeff Goodall does a spectacular job of explaining the effects of coal on real people's lives. Although a journalist, and not specifically a scientist, he does a thorough and professional job of unearthing startling facts about Big Coal and debunking myths. He spent years researching his subject and has done an superlative job in laying out the facts in an accessible and honest way. For anyone who has questions about the effects of Big Coal on America and the world, and wants the facts told with heart and intelligence, this is the one to read.
Cool thinking about a hot topic.......2007-09-14
Right from the start, when author Jeff Goodell discusses daily life around a coal extraction site in Wyoming, "Big Coal" is a captivating look at a subject that is seemingly as ordinary...as a lump of coal. Goodell knows his subject. He has witnessed coal mining operations in West Virginia, Wyoming and China. He has interviewed government officials, regulators, environmentalists, mine operators and the miners themselves. He has witnessed the devastation of strip mining and spoken to people whose land is literally washing away from them. He has spoken to those whose livelihoods are dependent on coal, and who even get a thrill from pitting their lives against Mother Nature. He has detonated explosives that exposed coal seams, accompanied inspectors worriedly checking excavation sites for potentially-fatal weak spots and ridden the rails with those who transport coal across the country.
"Big Coal" details the thrills and dangers of mining, an occupation that has cost 100,000 lives since 1900. It discusses the geological forces that laid down the coal beds, the differences between grades of coal like bituminous and anthracite and the historical personalities that bequeathed us our power system. He tackles tough issues -- like the efforts to control their entry of coal by-products mercury and sulfur into the environment. He is not afraid to tell it like it is. To the current administration's contention that there are 250 years of coal in the ground (250 million years in the words of George W. Bush), Goodell counters with studies that show that fewer than 20 years' worth of that coal that is *economically* extractable. Goodell analyzes the devastating impact of burning carbon-rich coal on the global environment. CO2 being a greenhouse gas with enormous impact on climactic warming trends. Goodell lays out a compelling case for the folly of building more and more plants that belch more of the stuff into the atmosphere. Goodell details the way Big Coal ignores and fights this long range problem for short-term profit. Most depressingly, he relates the political enablers that allow Big Coal to persuade Americans that polluting their streams and wrecking their children's environment is good for them. He discusses the way foreign juggernauts like China and India are beginning to repeat America's coal-centered mistakes in their quest to become world economic leaders, and the decreasing leverage that a coal-hungry America has to counter this threat.
The last third of the book was the hardest to read. It described the political expediency and pure greed that induces the coal lobby and US politicians to ignore, minimize and paper over the true costs of burning coal. Easy, low-cost solutions that can reduce coal's effect on the environment are put off as long as possible so coal execs can get a few more years of profits from the black rock. The public is misled to keep shareholders happy and politicians in office. This section caused me to put the book down out of frustration with our greed-drive political system.
But do not despair. "Big Coal" lays out the entire complex picture of coal and the industry required to harvest and exploit it. The book is not an attempt to destroy the coal industry or to destroy America's technological leadership. It is a clear-eyed and straightforward assessment of a difficult and complex reality. Reading the book will help you understand the many facets of the way that coal keeps the global economy running and that will (without adequate protections) land us in a world of hurt. Goodell's even-handed and comprehensive appraisal of the issues that fuel the coal controversy may make him seem biased in the eyes of some. And he is biased, if by this one means that he values clean air and land, a future free of climate change and live miners living to healthy old age with their families. But he is always fully truthful.
"Big Coal" will help you understand the issues -- technological, political, moral and economical-- to be tied to getting our power from coal. The Black Rock employs tens of thousands, allows millions to live in luxury and enables our nation's technological success. Yet it poisons our children, warms our planet and takes or shortens the lives of hundreds of thousands. I appreciated "Big Coal" for its ability to lay out the facts without the smog of industry and political obfuscation that usually accompanies their telling. An excellent, quite readable and educational book.
Big Coal.......2007-09-10
This book reads with enormous clarity and logic. It's better than a good fiction novel, and much of what Mr. Goodell has warned the country about did come to pass shortly after the book was printed. To understand America today and its energy policies, to understand the corruption and manipulation and political cronyism behind the scenes as our government deals with corporate power and big coal, to understand possible solutions, buy this book! It's a must read for any American citizen who has spent day after day hearing the recent and tragic news stories concerning our Utah miners. It's a prescient book. It will inform you as a voter and a citizen. And, it is soooooooo lucid and easy to read.
How and Why We Are Using a 19th Century Fuel in the 21st Century.......2007-08-21
Although this was in my library for some time, I decided to read it now due to the mining accidents in Utah and China. I was hoping it might shed some light on why the number of mining accidents seems to be increasing, which it did. It also provided a host of other information about coal and the companies that mine and burn coal that was fascinating.
From mountain top removal mining, to reverse mining to open pit mining, the author covers how coal is mined in detail. He also looks at the economics of coal in tunneled mines versus strip mines and why West Virginia and surrounding areas are so poorly compensated for the work they do. It was amazing to see the mine operator's comments in Utah on the news, while reading his previous statements that were detailed in the book. It became quite obvious that his interests in the miners trapped in Utah were more economic than true sympathy for the miners or their families.
The second section deals with the burning of coal, and why it is so well loved by utilities. Basically, coal burned in older generation plants is a license to print money and the coal and utility companies are fully aware of the damage done, but put profits ahead of anything and everything. Further, the author details the obstructionist techniques used by these companies to keep coal going as a fuel.
In the final section, the author details the damage being done by coal to the environment, as well as to humans who live downwind from the plants. He also looks at various solutions that could be employed today to make cola a much cleaner burning fuel and how this would affect the costs of electricity. He also ventures to China to see what they are doing about carbon releases and how we are helping to cause the massive build up of coal fired plants in Chine with our purchasing habits.
This is a wonderful book that will answer almost any question you would have about the mining and burning of coal and why we are still using a 19th century fuel in the 21st century. It is very readable and should be read by every individual with a connection to the electric grid. My only complaint is in how the book was foot noted. No foot notes were present in the text, making it hard to line up the text with the notes at the end of the book.
Greed, Guilt, Anger and Not Knowing When it is Too Late.......2007-08-19
This book starts with "The Dig" describing in detail the actual mining of coal and what this does to the environment, homeowners around digs, how miners are treated and the transportation of coal (exploitation of the railroads/only thing good about this is the railroads kick the coal business in the butt when Big Coal is used to doing the kicking (to consumers/environmentalists/miners and the few politicians who aren't in their pockets and actually care about enforcing pollution standards). The bad thing is higher prices for consumers held hostage by 2 bandits - the railroads and coal industry. Next is "The Burn" about the politics of coal and the constant finagling of putting off pollution control standards and the corruptness of the EPA (government employees appointed to the EPA from the coal industry, wreck havoc, and return to the coal industry) and health of people especially young (ex. asthma/mercury). It addresses how the industry deals with mercury, heavy metals, air pollution, water pollution and destruction of the land (or not). Last is The Heat" chapter which addresses global warming and what the electric (utility) companies are doing to "meet or not meet this formidable challenge". Why is ANY of this happening when there is a simple fix for most of it? Ban anyone from working in the EPA who worked in the coal/energy industry (including as a lobbyist) in the last 10 years from being appointed/hired to the EPA. Ban anyone from working in the EPA if any of their immediate family works for Big Coal. Ban anyone currently working for the EPA from working in the coal industry (including as a lobbyist) for 10 years AFTER they leave the EPA and that includes their immediate family members. If whoever is hired to work in the EPA (biologist/teacher/MBA, physician, lawyer, plumber, nurse, etc) needs to understand a particularly complicated piece, he can ASK the Big Coal industry and others outside Big Coal for that specific answer. QUIT relying on the present big coal/energy companies (throw in auto industry/gasoline here also) to come up with a solution to finding alternate energy sources. The blacksmith did NOT invent the automobile, travel agents did NOT invent Orbitz.com and the U.S. postal office did not invent e-mail. The government should dig through their patent computer (use city (not government) librarians to do this and ensure the research/dig salary monies go directly into the city library fund and not the city coffers. The patent website is on-line so the librarian doesn't even have to travel. ANY patent dealing with energy that hasn't been ACTIVELY (define it so there is no wiggle room) worked on in 2 years, let this patent become public property and announce it on the internet. Change the U.S. patent law to make this so but also address the patent laws of other countries if they have any and have them change theirs also so the U.S. is not at a disadvantage. The whole world needs to solve this mess. This book was a fantastic read because of its in-depth coverage of the entire problem. Although it addresses mostly the United States coal industry, China and India aren't forgotten either although the author seems to think the U.S. should pay a higher price upfront by having to implement stricter pollution standards for us now and allow China and India more time to foul the air/water before they would fall under the same pollution guidelines. Read this book. You will learn much but won't sleep much. Sleep will evade you due to anger at the greed of the Big Coal industry, corruptness of politicians in bed with Big Coal, EPA nepotism, EPA turning its back on U.S. citizens whose lands and health are being destroyed by Big Coal (similar to asbestos) and even a little at yourself because you want to turn on your AC but at a cheap price. Guilt will eat at you for forgetting to turn off your TV when you went to bed or for even having 2 or 3 TVs and because want to forget about all this when you close this book but in the back of your mind you know it isn't going away and it will get worse for you but especially for your children. Anger because we as citizens of the United States of America are complacent in allowing our government officials who are supposed to work for us (should be finding new ways to turn on our AC and make/enforce pollution standards) to instead be controlled by these Big Coal businesses whose only goal is to work for their stockholders. Anger because at local/state level all we can do is vote them out of office and guilt because we don't vote or care to research who we are voting for. You won't sleep because of worry over the health of our children from Big Coal pollutants which can be stopped/reduced but aren't (even if you don't believe in Global Warming and all those associated hazards, the air/land/water pollution and land stripping are still there) and finally worry over the condition of the U.S. and the world environment we will leaving our children and grandchildren once the mountains are stripped off, the land blown/dug up and the air/land/water fouled because the United States of America with all it's strength is too weak to put it foot down on Big Coal (throw in gasoline here as well) and throw its weight and subsidies at the small inventers not working for the coal/energy industry in any way (think Edison/Wright Brothers) and don't give the coal industry any of these subsidies because they will not work to make themselves obsolete but just try to reinvent the same wheel. I have faith in the individual person to find a solution not big business and not big government. When you read this book you will be filled with despair but also hope because it can be corrected if we want it to be. Sleeplessness will come because of fear of going the wrong way or not acting fast enough once the right way is found and it will be too late. The worst part is not knowing when too late is. Only God knows that.

Book Description
Watson explores the subtle forces of memory fields and suggests that matter has the capacity to absorb emotional “fingerprints,” the mental fossils that channel echoes from the past. He demonstrates the complexity of inanimate life and offers possible proof of our sensitivity to its minute, natural patterns of energy.

Another Clue to the Secret of Life .......2007-08-02
I purchased Watson's book some time ago and I find it ageless. After reading his book, I found I have a new respect for inanimate objects. I have also had unusual experiences that made me realize that there is consciousness in inanimate objects. One I recall is purchasing a new Honda in the late 70's.
I was living in So. Calif. at the time - very little rain and I began getting water in the fuel tank. After three times, I began asking why. Then came the realization that I had given my Honda a female name and this car had a male energy. When I renamed him Charlie, I had no more problems. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.
Very enjoyable...but full of questionable facts.......2007-01-12
This book suggests that just about everything, every object on the planet, has some sort of LIFE in it--life from the Earth itself, or life from the people that have handled it and left a little piece of themselves, their auras, behind.
It is some hardcore new age hippie stuff, but I'll tell ya, it's interesting. It really is.
Lyall Watson does a decent job at justifying his outlandish claims with numerous stories of wedding rings making their ways back their owners over impossible distances, statues bleeding and crying, and places that feel happy or sad or angry to everyone that enters them.
He makes a compelling argument, but his case suffers quite a bit due to the lack of credibility of many of his sources, such as the Enquirer and the Weekly World News and other tabloid stuff, and he never seems to go very far out of his way to confirm or deny anything he reports. The book's notes section is lacking at best, but it does have an index.
I really enjoyed this book, though I'd hardly consider it an infallible nonfiction source. I enjoyed the way it made me think differently...about things. I enjoyed the way it's helped me see the world.
Also, I was amused that its author was able to suspend skepticism enough to consider that candles might be alive, but never enough to consider that the soul might continue to live beyond death.
Very Interesting.......2003-03-03
I read this bok a few years ago and recall enjoying it completely. Lyall Watson's books will make you think, Supernature, the book about
Evil, the Romeo Error, are all books by Lyall Watson that I have enjoyed so much. I reccomend this book because I bought it once, lent it to someone who never returned it, and fully intend to buy it again. It's that good.
pretty good.......2000-04-02
Overall Watson does a good job. His style can get carried away, though. It has been a while since I read this book, so I am fuzzy on the details. What I remember is the general impression that the author loves his subject but gets a little too excited about it at points and this leads to some hyperbolic claims. He has a book coming out called "Jacobson's Organ"; it is about the sense of smell. I have read excerpts from it, and it is written in a similar fashion. More literary science than scientific literature.

Book Description
Taking us from the imperial courts of ancient China to a squalid mine in Burma today, THE STONE OF HEAVEN-now in paperback-reveals for the first time the bizarre true story of Imperial Green Jade, one of the rarest stones in the world, more precious than diamonds, coveted for its life-extending powers and its aphrodisiac properties as well as for its astonishing beauty-a stone that has shaped the destiny of nations and changed the lives of all who have worn it.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating but uneven & sometimes trivial.......2006-06-07
Having picked this book up for a discount of just $4, I wasn't expecting much, but the authors do provide some much appreciated fillers for my knowledge of recent - the past 300 years - history of China and Indo-China. The narrative does tend to be overlong and not always artfully written and what I found most trivial was the excessive attention paid to profligate movie stars and heiresses and their overwrought, self-important and self-indulgent pursuit of a green rock. When one reflects that the authors are British tabloid schlock-meisters, it explains the uneven and tedious attention to celebrity that is so wearying in their account. Maybe the British public expects such treacle, but the rest of the world, and this American reader, appreciate their research while suffering their literati indulgences.
But the story is a heartbreaking one that depicts just how low-down, vile, murderous and evil all men and women can stoop because of an obsessive attachment to material goods, one which continues to this day in Burman/Myanmar. You get the sense that entire nations can have a karmic burden that continually haunts all its people and Burma is one such nation. China seems to have come out from under its negative karma, to its great fortune.
What I found most puzzling is that if these two writers were really able to penetrate the heart of Myanmar's most horrific mine, why has there been little or no public light shed on this.
I do appreciate these British writers casting an unabashed light on the rapacious, arrogant and thieving behavior of their imperial ancestors - they do not flinch to recount uncouth, barbaric behavior by British soldiers looting the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace as well as their arrogant attitude toward all asian peoples. Now I understand the vitriolic hatred that engendered such now comical, but then potent and patriotic sloganeering by Mao's China about 'imperialist running dogs.'
Overall, a good read for four bucks, but some material could easily be skipped.
Fascinating story, poorly told........2005-06-15
The facts of the history of jade are fascinating, but here are told with tiring meanderings, overlong explanations of tangential topics, and an ending that featured too much of the authors. A chore to get through.
An excellent and thorough read.......2002-08-11
Levy and Scott-Clark are excellent story tellers, and do they ever have a story to tell. Tracing the history of imperial green jade, or jadeite, they begin in the late 18th century with Chinese emperor Qianlong and 400 rivetting pages later end in present day Myanmar. Along the way the reader is exposed to the unrestrained profligacy of the Chinese emperors and the equally unrestrained ignorance and arrogance of the British colonialists. There is scheming and plots within plots as players in the Chinese dynasties kill their own progeny to ensure a malleable emperor will succeed. The plundering by the British of the old Imperial summer palace is shocking, and the primitive warfare of the Kachin in Burma is horrifying. Levy and Scott-Clark's descriptions put the reader right into the midst of the action: the writing is so effective that you can feel the clinging humidity of the Burmese jungle as 19th century British explorers plod along in search for the mines from whence the jadeite is extracted.
Also of tremendous interest were the passages about the Dowager Empress Cixi. If all you know about the last emperor Pu Yi is from the wonderful movie "The Last Emperor," this book will help round out some of the events and issues driving the Pu Yi story along that were alluded to in the movie. Besides, the movie's only allusion to Cixi is in the very beginning when the toddler Pu Yi is brought to the Forbidden City. Levy and Scott-Clark reveal to the reader from where Cixi came and how her desire for the jadeite was often at the core of her political machinations.
And then there are the final chapters that reveal a scenario so horrifying, so shocking that even the surrealistic visions of Francis Ford Coppola in "Apocolypse Now" cannot compare.
This is definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and probably the best book I've read in the past five years. After reading this book you will not be able to look at another piece of jadeite, no matter how beautiful, and not whince because now you know the stone's infamous history.

A gripping modern-day detective story about the scientific quest to understand the Oracle of Delphi
Like Walking the Bible, this fascinating book turns a modern eye on an enduring legend. The Oracle of Delphi was one of the most influential figures in ancient Greece. Human mistress of the god Apollo, she had the power to enter into ecstatic communion with him and deliver his prophesies to men. Thousands of years later, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist William J. Broad follows a crew of enterprising researchers as they sift through the evidence of history, geology, and archaeology to revealas far as science is ablethe source of her visions.
Customer Reviews:
The fumes of Apollo.......2007-09-27
I purchased this book because I have been to Delphi, and loving Greek and Ancient Roman History I have always read about the Oracle.
This book starts with the entire story of who were the Oracles. How they became Oracles.Plutarc who was a priest at the Apollo Temple describes the frenzies of these young women and later by mature women. How did they go on a trance, were they really prophetic or was it that somebody told them what to say? Were there faults under the Temple that drugged these women?
The French found the response, which later one was found to be untrue.
In this book you will read how a geologist and archeologist teamed together to discover the secrets of the Delphi Oracle.
It is a 5 star book. You learn so much about the Oracles, the Temple itself and most of all the geological sites.Greece is on a plateau of many faults, sliding and rubbing at each other. Constantly moving.Over the centuries the faults have closed, and other very small ones have appeared.Still there are the famous Delphi faults the big ones.I will stop writing so that you will be thrilled when you read of the discoveries.Enjoy your reading,
I am sure that you will enjoy this book.
History of the geological search for "Peuma" at Delphi.......2007-09-09
The ancient Greeks believed that there was a "pneuma" (gas) that came into the Oracles chamber and this is what inspired her "prophecies". This book provides a history of the geological search evidence of such a gas. This is the unique aspect of this book. No other seems to have been written on this aspect of Oracle (unlike the history, religious importance, etc. of the Oracle). Written by the NY Times science editor it provides a good (i.e., not dry) narrative that the layman can follow and still be entertained and amazed by.
The book also provides some background and history of the Oracle but it others do a much better job (i.e., this is not the reason to purchase this book).
At the end the book provides the author's view of scientific "reduction". This is the one weak point of the book (and hence the reason it is given a four star rating) but, fortunately, it is short and is only a long footnote to the geological history which is the essence of the book.
Heavenly Journey.......2007-01-31
This book rates as one of the most enlightening and enjoyable books I have ever read.
I had visited Delphi prior to reading this wonderful book and was well aware of its stunning setting in central Greece (Its setting qualifies it as the most beautiful archaeological site in the world)
What I was not too sure about was its significance and impact on the ancient world - which as detailed in this book was far reaching and profound.
William Broad writing style is clear and rather engaging to a point that I could not put this book down.
I have no doubt that after reading the book you will either return to Delphi or visit for the first time.
entertaining stuff .......2006-08-30
Oracle is a wonderful discussion of the Oracle at Delphi, Northern Greece. In the introduction, the author discusses the evolution of the site as a local center of mystic revelations to one of international renown and influence, and ultimately to an abandoned ruin lying beneath a small modern village ignorant of its presence or of its magnificent reputation.
The main text, and the meat of the work, is the discussion of the collaboration between a sedimentary and structural geologist, Jelle de Boer and an archeologist and historian John Hale. Both men had an interest in the ancient site, and having met by accident, agreed to work together to clear up an underlying confusion regarding the ancient site that had arisen by virtue of an early French excavation of the site.
Author William Board, is not an academic. He is neither a geologist nor an historian. He's a professional journalist, and as I've come to expect of the breed, a well researched individual with a gift for dramatic narration. He creates a sense of place for Delphi and its ancient priestesses, citing a number of ancient historians in doing so. He gives the reader a feel for the expectations and the disappointments of the French archaeologists who uncovered the site and presented their findings--and non-findings--to the world. He also gives background to both of the primary protagonists, de Boer and Hale, presenting the one as a survivor of concentrations camps in Java, and the other as a multitalented historian. Over the years each introduced the other to their own discipline and contributed ideas and objections to the data they compiled. The weaving together of various pieces of the puzzle of the "vapors" of the Oracle makes a wonderful story.
In the final chapter is the author's take on what science misses by reducing everything, including the mystery of Delphi, to simple physical phenomena. While I tend to agree with him, I'm not certain it fits with the rest of the narrative.
The story was virtually tailored to my interests. I have a geology degree and one in history, with interests in classics and in geoarchaeology. I've also been to Delphi, so the scenes as describe resonate in my memory. De Boer's following of the fault system was truly entertaining stuff from my point of view.
A fascinating tale of what collaboration can do.
physical chemistry .......2006-07-24
As a practicing physical chemist for almost 50 years I just could not ignore the volatility/diffusion discussion on page 194. Ethylene has a slightly higher molecular weight than does nitrogen and slightly lower than does oxygen. Clearly diffusion cannot explain the absence of ethylene.
Almost certainly reactivity can explain the absence of ethylene, but I am not an organic chemist.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Oracle. I dug out Betrayers and enjoyed re-reading it.
Book Description
Reveals the true nature of the secret science the Templars discovered in the Holy Land that was the key to their power
• Shows the cartographic knowledge that allowed the Templars to cross the Atlantic and establish settlements in the New World
• Explains the connection of the Templar meridians to the journey of Lewis and Clark
• Shows the role played by secret societies in the establishment of the United States
The most enduring mystery surrounding the Templars concerns the nature and whereabouts of their great treasure. Whereas many believe this lost treasure contains knowledge of the bloodline of Christ, William F. Mann shows that it actually consists of an ancient science developed before the Great Flood--knowledge discovered by the Templars in the Holy Land during the Crusades and still extant today in Templar/Masonic ritual. Among other things, this knowledge enabled the Order to establish accurate latitudinal and longitudinal positions long before the foundations of the current science were laid in the seventeenth century. This allowed them to cross the Atlantic to reach the New World, where they established secret settlements and mining operations that gave them a limitless supply of precious metals and a military edge over their opponents.
Pursued farther into the interior of the North American continent by their adversaries from the Old World, the Templars left artifacts, relics, and information caches at key sites, confident that future initiates could use their understanding of the science of meridians and ley lines to locate them. The author points out that not only did future masons such as Jefferson and Washington use this science as the basis of their designs for Monticello and Washington, D.C., but the true motive of the expedition of Lewis and Clark was to identify the meridians mapped by the Templars and to search for the final resting place of Prince Henry Sinclair--where the great Templar treasure could also be found.

Celestial Navigation.......2007-02-11
Much closer to the truth than most Templar tales. Stellar science for global mapping (trade routes & secret hideouts) was a key Templar trade secret. Templar pirate ships were seafaring Masonic lodges. 'The Christ Conspiracy' and 'Brotherhood of the Sun' are also excellent reads.
Templar Meridians, Magdalene Mandala, Swords at Sunset.......2007-01-01
The Templar Meridians employs a good deal of meticulous research to establish the presence of the Grail in North America. This book uses a wealth of historical documents and ancient evidence to support its controversial theories and I highly recommend it. Also highly recommended are two other fine Grail books, one non-fiction and the other fiction, and both are by Michael Bradley, a renowned Grail expert who served as a researcher for the Da Vinci Code movie. Bradley's Swords at Sunset is a non-fiction work that also traces the Grail to North America, primarly Niagara Ontario and Vermont state; while his fictional novel, The Magdalene Mandala is a wonderfully written thriller with a twisting plot that moves at break-neck speed. It also has well drawn characters and in the view of many is superior to the Da Vince Code. For anyone like me with a growing interest in the Grail, do yourself a favour and check out Templar Meridians; Swords at Sunset and The Magdalene Mandala, which sent my heart pounding. These are three very good books.
Scientific proof would help!.......2006-07-18
Although Mr. Mann appears to have performed an immense amount of research, I find the research at this time to be just conjectured tales. To many suggestions, perhaps, maybe and assumtions in trying to weave together a scattered history from an Order that was destroyed by the pope and king of France. I would like to believe many of the suggestions in his book as there are many un-answered questions and bits of history that was lost and hidden under a veil of darkness and secrecy. Our North American scholars have led us in a fairy tale when it comes to the founding of North America and until they find hard evidence, evidence that is most likely kept in a secure vault, we can only try to see through that misty veil, some sort of conspiracy.
The Grail comes to North America!.......2006-04-06
Every once in a while, I like to dip my toes into some different interpretations of history, those that don't really fit with what most historians really think. Inevitably, the books are interesting, but fail to convince me that their "new" version of history is the correct one. I recently was bitten by that bug again, and so I picked up two books that sounded intriguing. One of them was Templar Meridians: The Secret Mapping of the New World, by William F. Mann. Evidently, I missed his first book, and that's too bad, as this book builds on that one. In fact, I felt a bit lost at times because Mann referred to it so often. He does try to explain the references, and I was generally able to figure out what he was talking about, but I do wish I had read the other book first. That's not the only problem with this book, however, and once again, I fail to be convinced by something that's "out there," so to speak. It's an interesting book, but not a convincing one for anybody who's not already leaning toward Mann's historical vision.
The idea behind Templar Meridians is basically an expansion on the theory that the Knights Templar fled to the New World when the Church turned against them, and that they brought a treasure with them. This turns out to be the "Holy Grail," but Mann never really explains what this Grail might be. Perhaps that was in the first book, but the book does tend to be vague on this issue, sometimes calling it "the Grail" and sometimes wondering itself just what the treasure might be. Mann uses Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the book at the heart of the Davinci Code controversy, as a starting point, detailing the bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and speculating that the Merovingian heir came with the fleeing knights to hide among the natives in a colony established before the "discovery" of the New World by Columbus. Mann claims that the Templars had some secret knowledge of longitude and latitude lines, and how important certain lines were because of their mystical energy. The book's narrative begins at Green Oaks, Nova Scotia, where the Prince Henry Sinclair led the first Templar settlement in the New World in 1398, a full century before Columbus.
It was interesting to me how, when Mann was dealing with established historical fact (known European history, such as can be shown by letters and other concrete documents), he expresses everything with certainty. This happened, and then this. Most of the time, however, when he gets to the subject matter of the book (keeping in mind that this book is supposedly convincing us that what he says is true), the language shifts to phrases like "it is likely that" or "some say." As these suppositions are the basis of his theory, it's a good thing he doesn't present these ideas as established facts, but too often he builds on these "likely" facts to create other ideas that he appears more certain about. While what he's saying certainly *could* be true, the foundation of where he goes from there is hardly stable enough to support everything else as definitive. He does provide plenty of sources for this information, but many of them are suppositions themselves.
However, occasionally he lands a whopper with no source whatsoever and I just had to stop reading for a moment and blink my eyes to make sure I read it properly. Most egregious is on page 172, where he baldly states that, because Masons were on both sides of the American Revolution, British generals "secretly supported their fellow Freemasons by disengaging their troops during crucial conflicts..." While he does qualify this with "it seems," he offers us no source for why it would even seem to be true. These kinds of statements threw me out of the book and raised my skepticism even higher.
This is a shame, as I did find Mann's theories interesting reading. He ties a lot of geographical knowledge and theories into the secret history of the Templars and the Masons, and also gives a vivid history of European exploration of the New World (both "established" fact and theoretical). I have to admit that some of the geography went over my head, as he applies geometry to the longitudinal lines (the meridians) to show how the locations of some settlements in the New World were chosen and why they are mystically important. But it was still intriguing to read about.
The other main problem with The Templar Meridians is that many of the diagrams and pictures of ancient maps are really hard to read. Many times I had to take at face value that the document said what Mann claims it said because I couldn't read it myself. This happens more with the maps where some of the symbols on it are supposedly important to what Mann's saying. I'm sure they're on the document (I'm certainly not accusing him of making it up), but I wish I could have seen some of it myself. Perhaps that was just my copy, though.
While this book would probably be interesting to fans of The Davinci Code who want to read something about the "real" Templars and the Holy Grail, I can't really say for sure how much it diverges from that book. They have the same starting point, with the Merovingian dynasty, but I think Mann takes it in a different direction. And, of course, he's not claiming that it's a novel like Brown does. This is documented history, or at least attempts to be. Templar Meridians gives us some interesting theories, a perfect feast for those of you who want to dip your toes in "alternative" (my word, not Mann's) history. Who knows? Mann might even be right. I'm afraid that he doesn't quite convince this reader though.
