Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Simon rode a motorcycle around the world in the seventies, when such a thing was unheard of. In four years he covered 78,000 miles through 45 countries, living with peasants and presidents, in prisons and palaces, through wars and revolutions. What distinguishes this book is that Simon was already an accomplished writer. In 25 years this book has changed many lives, and inspired many to travel, including Ewan McGregor.

5 out of 5 stars A compulsive page turner.......2007-08-19

This book is almost impossible to put down and is absolutely inspiring to read. Deaf to the pleas of my wife and children I read on into the night. I often felt I was actually there with Ted as he copes with some pretty dire stuff. As a New Zealand motorcyclist living in India I could relate so much to his experiences. More needs to be written about the amazing opportunities to ride in India, so perhaps with this as my inspiration its my turn.

3 out of 5 stars jupiters travels.......2007-07-30

Contnet of trip around world found to be good however the way it is written it gets extremely boring and at time hard to understand. Have read "Long Way Round" and found that book to be great, but "Jupiters Travels" was dull.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic journey.......2007-05-24

What can you say about "Jupiters Travels" that hasn't already been said? It's the quintessential motorcycle travel book, a book that inspired many men to undertake similar adventures. (Just watch Long Way Round or read Motorcycle Therapy: A Canadian Adventure in Central America to enjoy the stories of two such men.) Ted Simon will make you shake your head in wonder of his good fortune (at times) and his calm assurance that all will be well under circumstances that would make most men abandon hope. Well written and thought provoking, this is a must read for any motorcycle adventure enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Great book but not the greatest.......2007-04-25

I read a lot great reviews of this book and I guess my expectations were too high. It is a nice book, a little bit difficult to understand with many complex words. But who understands the brits anyway? It is good literature with all sorts of tales and adventures in the whole world. It is funny that the same things can/will happen to you if you travel around the world, but 40 years later! The world didn't change much after all. This book will keep you reading until you finish it because of the great detail of the adventures. Nice book, worth the price.

Book Description

The 3rd Edition of this 2-volume comprehensive work provides expert coverage of today's most contemporary approaches to the management of fractures and other injuries. Internationally recognized specialists offer extensive coverage of both internal and external fixation and the basic anatomy and mechanisms of injury integrated with diagnosis, management, follow-up, and complications. New content encompasses trauma reconstruction, malunions, nonunions, infections, limb length discrepancies, and related problems.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Expansive text on fracture management.......2001-05-22

As an alternative reference text to Rockwood and Green's Fracture in Adults, this voluminous guide breaks down fracture management according to anatomical location and incorporates viable contemporary methods of fixation, with focus on the author's preferred method of surgical prep and exposure. As the second edition (1998), it encompasses many of the new techniques of fracture repair, but like many texts is not completely current on all topics once released. The chapters on preoperative evaluation and stabilization of the trauma patient are particularly good. The photographs and illustrations prove appropriate. Deficiences: pediatrics, tumor, and foot and ankle...but these topics can certainly be addressed with other texts such as Ogden's Skeletal Injury in the Child or Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics by Morrisy.

5 out of 5 stars The new "bible" for fracture care.......2000-04-12

My program provided me with both Rockwood and Green as well as Browner and Jupiter's work and I consistently referenced Skeletal Trauma more frequently. It's more concise and provides the basics in an easy to understand format for the beginning orthopod. The pediatric edition is quick and easy to read but skimps on some important details and concepts that I feel are important for the neophyte, but the adult edition is above reproach. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must have ortho trauma text.......2000-03-30

As an ortho resident, I have found this text to be very useful. It's easier and quicker to read than Rockwood & Green. Great for learning on the run while on call.

He made planetfall on Venus and all but colonized Mars, so it's not surprising that SF don Ben Bova finally set his sights on our solar system's swirling, red-eyed sovereign.

As with his previous planetary exploration books, Jupiter plants you right in the heart of the action, witness to the speculative science and political intrigue--and in this case, religious machination--that surround a fast-paced, dangerous, and technically fleshed-out mission. Our unlikely hero on this touchdown is an earnest, likeable, hard-working grad student named Grant Archer, a frustrated astrophysicist who's been shanghaied aboard Jupiter's Gold space station to fulfill a ROTC-style public-service commitment. What's worse, this devout young man has been ordered by the New Morality--the American flavor of the conservative religious order that runs Earth nowadays--to spy on some suspicious research involving alleged Jovian life forms.

Bova begins his book with an A.C. Clarke quote: "The rash assertion that 'God made man in His own image' is ticking like a time bomb at the foundation of many faiths." This tells you pretty much everything you need to know about where this book's going, and who, respectively, will be wearing the white and the black hats (unfortunately, some of the characterizations don't get much deeper). That the central protagonist is both a Christian and a scientist makes for some fertile character development, but Bova's not exactly gunning for God here--he's happy just to blast away at narrow-minded ideologues and other assorted religious fanatics. (But that, of course, is about as easy as making teenagers depressed.) --Paul Hughes

Book Description

Grant Archer merely wanted to work quietly as an astronomer on the far side of the moon. But a coalition of censorious do-gooders who run 21st century America sends him to a research station in orbit around Jupiter to spy on the scientists who work there. What they don't know is that Grant's loyalty to science may be greater than his loyalty to the New Morality.

5 out of 5 stars More Solar System Adventures from Ben Bova.......2007-08-22

Action and adventure are rampant in this "grand tour" novel of the largest planet in the solar system.

The main character in the book is Grant Archer. Recently graduated from college with a degree in astrophysics, Grant longs for the opportunity to study black holes and other celestial matter. However, the powers-that-be have different ideas for him. Required to perform four years of "public service", Grant is sent by Ellis Beech, head of the New Morality, to Jupiter. According to Beech, those people working on Space Station Gold have apparently been searching for signs of life on Jupiter's satellites as well as Jupiter itself. This does not sit well with Beech and the New Morality, for they believe that any form of life outside of earth is "godless". Beech is sending Grant to spy on the members of Space Station Gold and report his findings to the New Morality. To make matters worse for him, Grant is newly-married, and will now be without his wife for six years. Dejected, Grant accepts and begins the long journey to Jupiter.

After traveling for a year, Grant finally arrives at Jupiter, where he immediately meets Egon, who is the personnel director (at least for this week). Besides meeting Egon, Grant is also introduced to Lane O'Hara, a stunningly beautiful woman who is one of the scientists studying the possibilities of life existing on the planet. But Zhang Wo, the director of Space Station Gold, is the one who really gets Grant's attention. Their relationship is icy at best, but as the story goes along, the two bond and become friends. Meanwhile, Grant is introduced to the rest of the Jupiter team: Zeb, Irene, Quintero, Buono, Uhara, and Krebs. Earlier, a probe was launched to penetrate the clouds of Jupiter and plunge into Jupiter's ocean to see if any life existed there. The mission was a failure. Now, a new mission is being planned, and Grant is to be one of the crew. Will this mission succeed, or will it fail like the previous one? Will life be discovered in Jupiter's ocean?

In keeping with the tradition of his other novels, Ben Bova has created an exciting story containing action and intrigue. Perhaps the strongest point of Bova's writing is his character development. Each character in this book is well-developed, and the reader can bond immediately with them. From the chilly Wo to the somewhat apprehensive Archer, Bova has developed characters that the reader can truly relate to. The story itself is very well-conceived, and the action is non-stop.

I recommend this book very highly. I've read others from Bova's "grand tour" series, and this book is as good as any I've read so far. If you're a fan of good science fiction, then don't miss Bova's "Jupiter. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of Bova's Best - A Science Fiction Masterpiece.......2007-06-25

Ben Bova is the last writer of the John W. Campbell Jr. mode. That is to say, a writer who takes plausible scientific principles and applies them to characters who must take action to resolve a clear conflict. He thus writes best about engineers, astronauts, explorers. He also writes well about politics and commerce (businesses operating in outer space, for example). But JUPITER (like VENUS) is an extraordinary achievement and has all the "sense of wonder" that's oftentimes missing in current science fiction. Lately, most sf is overladen with one trope after another, one sci-fi conceit or gimmick after another with no care to the evolution of characters in a scientific environment. JUPITER places several characters in believable circumstances with a few discoveries along the way. I've read this book three times now and it still works its wonders on me. Most writers, when they're dead and gone, will be remembered for one or two books or stories. I think JUPITER and VENUS will be among those books by Bova that will remain classics. Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars No sublety, SciFi of the lowest order.......2007-03-09

I love scifi, but I'm at a loss to explain the success of Bova's books. His writing is predictable and often repetitive, his plots are loose, and his characters are flat. His technology is contrived, and thinly explained. This book hits you over the head with his philosophy on science versus religion, and instead of asking interesting questions on that front, resorts to near lecturing using the unispired device of character thought monologue. About halfway through this book I lost interest.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Life As We Know It.......2006-08-20

On the second stop in Ben Bova's Grand Tour of our solar system, we explore the mysteries of the planet Jupiter-the largest gas giant in the system. Though we have a good starting idea of what type of planet Jupiter is--a massive ball of gas that rotates at a high speed, with bands of clouds circling the upper atmosphere and a giant, centuries old hurricane called the Red Spot that could swallow Earth itself. We also believe that Jupiter has a liquid metal hydrogen center surrounding a small rocky ball. Most likely, Jupiter is a failed companion star to Sol that never reached enough mass to ignite; a potential companion star that has a few of its own worlds circling it, including Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io...each with its own mysteries to be solved.

In "Jupiter", young, astrophysics graduate Grant Archer has his eyes set on studying black holes from the moon for his graduate studies; newly married, Grant must serve out four years of Public Service to the state for their generous funding of his education, and what better way, Grant believes, than this. But, the state, which is controlled by the New Morality, has other ideas for Grant: as a spy on Space Station Gold circling Jupiter where scientists are defying the state's desires and studying life on Jupiter's moons and in Jupiter itself. This study of extraterrestrial life has the potential of challenging the New Morality's view of reality, and they don't like it at all. Grant--a believer, but not a Zealot--is miffed at the idea, especially since there is no astrophysics research being conducted at Jupiter; a complete waste of his talents and time he believes. But, Grant has no choice, Public Service is Public Service; and if he can find out what the New Morality wants to know quickly, then maybe they will ship him back to the moon where he belongs.

What Grant is yet to learn, is what role he will ultimately play within the secretive space station and its mission of discovering what the large shapes moving around inside of Jupiter's world spanning ocean are...and are they intelligent?

Ben Bova weaves a tight, straight forward tale about a mission to the heart of Jupiter where our understanding of fluid dynamics are incomplete when it comes to the dynamics of a gas atmosphere that subtly becomes liquid ammonia-laced water without a distinct boundary. Bova speculates on the potential of a gas giant like Jupiter to support life--both microscopic and large and intelligent. I have recently read a few books that bring in gas giant life forms into the storyline, but "Jupiter" tackles the topic head on.

Unlike some of the more multi-layered space opera being crafted today, Ben Bova is a bit more old school; and, that is not a bad thing. It is a nice change of pace to read a good book about space exploration that is a simple adventure tale while tackling our understanding of our solar system and the universe at large. And, I enjoyed what is also a simple moral tale as well, where a young self- absorbed grad student grows up and discovers the difference between right and wrong without the help of a "New Morality".

4 out of 5 stars A Scientist and Believer.......2006-08-15

Jupiter (2001) is the second SF novel in the Planet Novel series, following Venus. In this volume, Grant Archer graduated with a degree in Astrophysics and expected to spend his two years of Public Service at Farside Observatory studying black holes. His wife would be serving with the Peacekeepers on Earth, but he should be able to spend his furloughs with her. Then the New Morality changed his Public Service tour to four years on Thomas Gold station orbiting around the planet Jupiter.

Grant appeals his assignment through New Morality channels to regional director Ellis Beech. There Grant is told that something unusual is occurring at the station and that he is to report any such suspicious actions to Beech. Grant is a Believer, but he doesn't fancy himself as a spy. However, he realizes that Beech could easily assign him to some obnoxious manual labor job and starts agreeing with the director's complaints.

After more than a year in transit, the rundown freighter Oral Roberts finally docks at Gold station. In the boarding tunnel, Grant notices an asymmetrical feature on one side of the torus that he doesn't recognize from his study of the station diagrams. Then he is met by Egon Farland, given a brief tour, and shown to his compartment.

As soon as he can, Grant tries to discover the purpose of the strange arrangement, but the computer gives him a message stating that the subject is not for public dissemination. After he tries several other ways of tracking down the object through the computer, Grant is summoned to the station director's office and told that he has no business trying to access such information. Zhang Wo declares that he has made a bad start on the station and directs him to report to the security office.

Lane O'hara, the current security director, is a beautiful woman who renders him speechless in admiration. In her initial conversation with Grant, Lane is vibrant and convivial, but soon displays a stern demeanor as she conveys the official briefing. After completing the formalities, she sends him to the personnel director, who turns out to be Farland. When Grant displays his puzzlement, Egon informs him that each of the scientific staff temporarily fills the administrative roles in the Jupiter system, thus allowing more scooters -- i.e., scientists -- on the staff and reducing the number of beancounters.

Almost all the scooters in the system are studying the various moons. However, both Lane and Egon are assigned to the Jupiter study group. Grant soon meets others is this study group: Zeb Muzorawa, Irene Pascal, Frankovich, Ignacio Quintero, Patti Buono, Kayla Ukara, and Christel Krebs. He also learns that five members of this group will be going below the clouds of Jupiter in the ship that he had first seen from the boarding tube. Little does he know that he will be one of them.

Director Wo is devoted to finding out whether the lifeforms spotted in the first dive of the saucer-shaped ship are intelligent. He has imposed strict security because the danger from Zealots in the New Morality and other like groups. Such Zealots take "Man was made in God's image" as their manifesto and they would assassinate anyone who tries to prove otherwise.

This novel continues the struggle between the fundamentalists in political power and the scientists who search for new lifeforms in the universe. Unfortunately for the fundamentalists, the scientists keep finding new indications of life within the solar system. Since these Believers depend upon the products of science and technology, how can they prevent the scientists and technologists from following their own agenda?

Logically speaking, fundamentalism is based on the most primitive of worldviews and belongs in a primitive society. Global warming killed off much of the world population and fundamentalism was acceptable to the survivors. However, population controls are not acceptable to most primitive societies and only caused resentment among the descendants of these survivors.

With a growing population, survival itself has once again become dependent upon technology. Now the fundamentalists are caught between the rock of their own beliefs and the hard place of group and individual survival. Compromise becomes a necessity, yet the Zealots are not compromisers.

Recommended for Bova fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of planetary exploration and moral dilemmas.

    Book Description

The fourteenth Falco novel is a tale of love, gangsters and female gladiators – including one from Falco’s own past.

Falco and his family are staying in London when Falco is summoned to the scene of a murder. The victim, Verovolcus, was a renegade with ties to Roman crime magnates operating in London, but he was also close to King Togidubnus. So when he is discovered stuffed head-first down a well, a tricky diplomatic situation develops that Falco must defuse, and which leads him into the seedy underbelly of London. There is a newly built amphitheatre in town, with female gladiators, but Falco soon realizes that the initially troublesome gladiators – including one from his own bachelor past – may just give him the edge he needs to solve Verovolcus’ murder, as the gangsters are pursued back to the Italian town of Ostia for a final showdown.

3 out of 5 stars Body in the Bathhouse, Part II.......2006-07-18

Well, continuing right along in our visit to rainy barbarian Britain, now we are in dark and dingy London town in its early days, certainly before civilisation got a good foothold. There is hope, however, for what is the new appearance there of a Roman criminal gang but the other side of Roman civilization, a sign London was becoming worthwhile?

Having resolved a problem with local ruler Togidubnus (in BODY), imperial agent Falco and his family intend to vacation with his patrician wife's cousins in London. "Intend" is the operative word. Falco soon stumbles on murder linked to that ruler, a protection racket, ugly enforcers, sharp practice, and shadowy bosses. Maybe these bosses are so shadowy because the setting is so often dark, muddy, and bleak--as life on the frontier must often have seemed to a true Roman.

Davis's acerbic wit is entertainingly honed here; in recent books it's been too too. Its anachronistic and decidedly British slang can be excused by the nationalities of the setting and the author. Both these books (BODY and JUPITER) show an increasingly literal and explicit archaeological basis for her descriptions of place in her novels. With her map it provides a better sense of distance and effort to the story's actions, and a better sense they might really have happened. The Londinium map even shows us how it "maps onto" (or rather is buried under) the center of modern London. Remarkable! Falco's adventures read like a tourist's guide to ancient London, too, as he explores its scruffy byways from top to bottom, from court to cantina, from an arena with the trendy idea of female gladiators, to criminal hangouts along the fetid Thames.

Falco and his police buddy, Petronius (who just happens to be in town on some unspecified mission), get into some very tight and dangerous corners. Long-time readers of this series will have noticed that Falco most readily gets into that sort of trouble when he hares off on his own. In his mind, noble causes often win out over caution or common sense teamwork, much to the frustration of his lovely wife, Helena. She is, once again, the most likable character in the whole series. With the children underfoot now, we don't see enough of her on the case.

It will be good to be quit of Britannia once again, by Jove, and returning to Rome where Davis shines.

3 out of 5 stars It Was A Dark and Stormy Day In Londinium..........2005-08-21

After Marcus Didio Falco solved the mystery of A BODY IN THE BATHOUSE, the thirteenth book in the Marcus Didio Falco Mystery Series, the Falcos planned to remain in Londinium for a vacation, staying with relatives. Then, a man suspiciously drowns at a local pub and the Falcos learn they will be staying in Londinium a little longer than they'd first anticipated.

Roman London, A.D. 75, is nothing like modern day London. It's primitive. With its imminent and endless downpours muddying the roads and the hearts and souls of its people, Londinium is the perfect setting for a murder mystery noir. The only smiles in this dark tale are those the reader leaks out in response to our sarcastic sleuth's wry comments to himself and others. How apropos that the unfortunate murder victim is drowned behind a pub on the wrong side of town.

Solving the murder isn't the only mystery in town. Keeping track of the suspects and the story lines is like trying to watch sideshows at the Circus Maximus. Who was the murdered man and why is his demise of such interest to the king and to Rome? Who is the waif Marcus's wife, Helena, rescues from the streets? What is Marcus's best friend, Petro, doing in London and why is he hiding from Marcus? What does Jupiter have to do with London? Why would Amazonia, the infamous female gladiator, have Marcus seized by her troops?

The plots are as thick with theories and red herrings as the streets and rivers of Londinium are with sludge, muck and bodies. Getting to know Marcus, his family and colleagues starting with this book, the fourteenth in the series, is like trying to understand I, Claudius beginning with its seventh episode. History buffs will enjoy the maps and historical references, noir fans will enjoy the ever-present gloom and disorder, and THE JUPITER MYTH will likely be best appreciated and enjoyed by faithful followers of the Marcus Didio Falco Mystery Series.

5 out of 5 stars I Just Love these Books.......2004-11-27

Lindsey Davis is now well into double figures with her Falco novels. They say that most people have a good book inside them, but to be able to write consistently good novels with innovative plots is a gift.

I believe it was a conscious effort on the part of Lindsey Davis to take Falco out of his normal surrounding and freshen her storylines up with a visit to Roman London.

Of course no sooner has Marcus Didius Falco and his wife Helena, who's breeding and background should put her far out of the reach of a rascal like Falco hit the streets of Londinium than a body is found stuffed down the well of a wine bar.

The unfortunate victim is a henchman of King Togidubnus an important ally of Rome.

Falco needs to pull out all the stops to find the murderer and placate the powers that be, but many things are about to happen before the mystery can be solved.

    Keep it up Lindsey.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Rome never seemed so exciting since "Gladiator".......2004-10-24

"Spartacus" and JULIUS CAESAR meet "Goodfellas" in this Ancient Rome mystery that's literally classic noir. You can smell the wine and the sweat from a female gladiator named Amazonia, a.k.a. femme fatale (literally) Chloris, who's just one of the complications auditor and secret Roman Empire sleuth Marcus Didius Falco, happily maried to partner in solving crime Helena, runs into while on holiday in Britain after an old enemy, Verovolcus, who's connected to native Britain king Togidubnus, is found stuffed down a well in a gin, er, wine joint named the Shower of Gold, after the form Jupiter (that's Zeus to you Greek fans) took to seduce one of his many conquests.

The description of ancient Romans living with ancient Britons is a vivid portrait of the age and the headaches of colonization. Marcus, formerly a man acquainted with the seamy side of life that old girlfriend Chrloris represents, now finds himself going up against it again when he uncovers evidence that Verovolcus' death may be linked to organized crime through a wimp of a mob boss whom Tony Soprano would whack on the spot. Not only that, the wimp boss in question has a personal grudge against hero and Falco friend L. Petronius Longus, who in turn has a personal, intimate tension with Falco's widowed sister Maia, who, in true noir tradition, reportedly is kidnapped by the mob in the book's final third.

But all is not as it seems...and you'll have fun deciphering the ending with Marcus and his cast of strong women.

4 out of 5 stars Outward Bound Good Cyberpunk Book.......2002-12-02

    Outward Bound

Outward Bound is an excellent science fiction book for either the science fiction fan or anyone looking for a good novel. The book is a short read that seems to go by rather quickly, which is a first for a slow reader like myself. The chapters are fairly short, but make the book easier to follow. I was definitely surprised that the book kept my attention, I could hardly set the novel down.

Linc Marani is a troubled teen who wants nothing more than to live the fast life. He runs into problems with the law and is turned to an alternative boot camp for youth. There he faces the adversity of his new and mysterious life. He interacts with many characters and problems, such as Angelo, the buddy, and Arvin, the bully. Tension rises when Arvin and Linc continue to butt heads and neither are willing to back down. The central theme is whether Linc will be able to turn his meaningless life around into something that is worth more than anything on this planet.

This is an uplifting story that gives hope that there are better things out there, showing that hard work and self control can get you somewhere in life. The technology is a little hard to follow but gets the point across. I was intrigued throughout the novel, this is the best science fiction book I have read, and I would rate it above the well known novels such as Blade Runner, Snow Crash, and Shockwave Rider. James P. Hogan's Outward Bound is just an entertaining, feel good novel.

4 out of 5 stars Light, pleasant YA novel.......2002-08-18

Hogan is one of my favorite hard-science sf writers. Here, he attempts a Heinleinesque juvenile novel, and does a pretty good job of it. This short book is a quick, light, pleasant read. It's pretty formulaic--an angel-with-a-dirty face kid from the wrong side of the tracks, right on the verge of going permanently bad, ends up in a tough-love bootcamp, which straightens him out. Nothing great, and certainly not for adults, but preteens should enjoy it.

    4 out of 5 stars uplifting.......2001-02-05

(Don't let the number of stars fool you. I only give the Bible a five. Four means I would *buy* this one.)

This is a fun read that is very upbeat. I have read it three times, checking it out of the library, and each time come away feeling better about the world. Good things can happen, even in a yucky future!

Linc (short for Lincoln?) really overcomes an awful background. Nice!

4 out of 5 stars Good cyberpunk novel.......2000-12-05

Outward Bound by James P. Hogan is the sixth book in the Jupiter series. This book was relatively easy to follow for me, a college age reader who is still getting used to cyberpunk type novels. The story is predictably told in short intervals, but without any major jumps occurring in the flow of the plot. As with many other cyberpunk novels, Outward Bound's main character, Linc Marani, knows only a community of selfish, backstabbing individuals whose greatest enjoyment comes from the use of drugs. At first, Linc sees no wrong with life being this way. Also consistent with other cyberpunk novels is the ultimate struggle the main character has with the stagnant society he finds out he wants to escape from.

One striking difference, however, is Hogan's acute characterization of Linc. The fifteen-year-old Linc Marani has spent his whole life within a few city blocks, running around with the wrong crowd, trying to scrape up enough money to get him and his parents by. The reader is able to see Linc's character change for better or worse with the decisions he makes. The story centers around Linc's ability to find a meaning for his life and his place in the universe. Will Linc be able to overcome his rough start to life and find his niche, or will he continue spiraling toward nowhere?

Hogan's confusing descriptions of futuristic technology coupled with a somewhat predictable plot prevents the novel from being a personal favorite, but the topics and issues the story brings up makes it quite worthy of reading.

5 out of 5 stars Mine was right on!! Another way to find out more about yourself........2007-07-24

    This lady knows me.
"Scorpio Jupiters need to explore the deep end of every area of your life" (-I needed the permission to do that because, the deep end can be a scary place to be) oh, and this too: "This is why it's so important, Scorpio Jupiter, for you to get a lot of sleep" -Okay, So That's why I love naps so much! Oh, and some place I'm sure I read something with the word Genius in it while describing me:)

Okay, seriously now, this is extremely user friendly, you find your birth date and year on the self explanatory chart, and see what sign your jupiter is in. Simple to do, and then you go thru and find that sign and start reading! I was a little skeptical at first, as I was flipping through to locate mine. Anxious to see what it said and compare to the me that I thought I knew so well....I was amazed when I started reading and I found some of the major themes of my life. I think I was so surprised because I wasn't counting on it being so in-depth. I know how our sun sign, rising sign, moon sign make up who we are, but I had never given any thought to my jupiter sign and how it affected me. It's just another aspect of who we are and why we are the way we are.

The thing I like a lot about this book is that I feel like there is a good amount of information included on each sign. There is helpful advice on strengths and excesses, understanding what influences us. There are sections that outline things like lucky foods, your best environment, your best times, etc., etc. About the only thing I found that didn't fit me was the colors listed for my scorpio jupiter. Which I think is pretty insignificant among all the other accurate information. Also, in thinking about that, I have to say that we are always evolving and growing and changing, so just because something doesn't fit you right now, doesn't mean that it won't at some other point in your life.?

The nice thing about books like this, is you get your own profile, and learn more about yourself, -and you can look up other people's as a way of understanding their makeup. Which could be really beneficial in relationships of all types.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't bother..........2007-01-04

Not only is there little or no useful information in this book, it is so poorly arranged it is quite difficult to find specific references.

I used to be somewhat cynical about the world of astrology and psychic intelligence - and Madalyn Aslan completely changed my perspective. I am a regular visitor to her website to view my horoscope each month, and I found this book fascinating (and, regarding my Jupiter sign characteristics and those of my friends, spot on!). Madalyn is a woman of tremendous perception and inspiration - I can't recommend this too highly.

    4 out of 5 stars Spirit-Affirming.......2004-06-14

I know the author as a psychic medium so I thought this book would have more of her in the wiccan vein. It's not that, but I learned a lot I didn't know before and her amazing life-force message still comes through.

Here she concentrates on positive healing through astrology and gives specifics and examples to assist. The self-empowerment is frankly amazing though she's not even reading you..!

    5 out of 5 stars HEALING ASTROLOGY.......2004-06-12

In our troubled times, we need help more than ever. Madalyn gets it right again in her second book.

She shows how each one of us has access to a source of blessings, and how to draw the power of our source into our lives. She writes that THE POWER IS INSIDE OF US. She encourages the healing in every aspect of your life. The examples she uses are awesome. It goes a little overboard in the celebrity department (for my taste) but the message still comes across powerfully.

Jupiter is the planet bestowing joy, protection, and benevolent luck onto earth. Let's receive it now!!!

We are waiting for more to come from this healing druid woman. I am sure we won't have to wait long.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource on Jupiter.......2005-11-22

Oh, yes, there are several excellent books about Jupiter for the layman. But if you have a technical background and want to learn about Jupiter, why not get the real thing? And this book is indeed the one to get. It has an introduction, twenty-six excellent papers by noted experts in their fields, and a CD with some additional color images. It contains information discovered by the Voyager, Galileo, and even the Cassini missions, as well as from a variety of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

The book starts out by addressing questions of Jupiter's origin and interior. A major question is the ratio of helium to hydrogen. That value has to be above the minimum set by cosmology (Big Bang nucleosynthesis), given that the high metallicity of both Jupiter and the Sun suggest that we're not dealing with primordial matter. And one would expect it to be less than the ratio for our Sun, given that the Sun has produced some helium by burning hydrogen. But measurements of this ratio seem a little low, and we're treated to some possible explanations.

Next, we learn about the Jovian atmosphere. An interesting question here has been the amount of water and its significance. And we learn about some of the photochemistry of the stratosphere. As the editors say, "if you like your hydrocarbons fricasseed and you like to dance under a strobe of X-rays, then Jupiter's middle and upper atmosphere is the place to be."

After this, we move a little higher up, to discuss Jovian dust, including Jupiter's rings. How thick are they? How dense? And are the gossamer rings really composed of micron-sized particles and smaller? We then are introduced to the outer satellites and the Trojan asteroids.

There are papers discussing the major satellites in some detail. We learn about Io, its tidal heating, and its volcanoes. And about Europa, including its tides and tectonics. There's material about Europa's Laplace mean motion resonance with Io and Ganymede. And a discussion of astrobiological issues: if Europa has liquid water under its crust, and if there are hydrothermal vents, it is possible that life exists there. There is a paper about the atmospheres of the satellites, and another about radiation effects on satellite surfaces.

Jupiter's large size and 10-hour rotation period are responsible for an immense Jovian magnetosphere, and the final papers in this book discuss various aspects of it. We learn about magnetospheric interactions with satellites. And about the Io plasma torus. And there is a paper on the dynamics of the magnetosphere. One fundamental question here which still has not been totally resolved is the process by which this magnetosphere manages to accelerate the Io plasma from basically a few electron volts to well over 100 thousand electron volts. And there is a fascinating paper about Jupiter's aurora.

The final paper is on the Jovian radiation belts. Issues include the basic electron energy spectrum in the inner radiation belts and the wave modes that may be present there. And there is a practical issue as well: if we don't know what radiation fluxes we're facing, it will be tougher to design the next deep space probe to Jupiter.

If you are interested in studying any aspect of the Jovian system, this book is a good place to start. I highly recommend it.

Dav Pilkey hits the halfway mark in this cheerfully ridiculous, easy-reader series that spans the solar system, as Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot takes on the Jurassic Jackrabbits from Jupiter.

Little Ricky (a smart young mouse, for those of you just joining us) is having a birthday, and that's cause for some serious robotic celebration. The family--along with cousin Lucy ("a little PEST!")--piles on top of the Mighty Robot for a trip to see dino skeletons at the local museum. Unfortunately, General Jackrabbit, evil ruler of Jupiter's "billions of carrot-loving jackrabbits" (the carrots make the planet orange, you see), has other plans for our heroes. He's hoping to take over Earth, but he knows that first he's got to take down Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot. And how better to accomplish that than using the museum's dino skeletons, some of the General's own DNA, and a Meany Machiney to create three big, mean Jurassic Jackrabbits?

There's no doubt that Pilkey can be much funnier when he has more words to work with--witness any of the Captain Underpants books (and Ricky Ricotta is no George or Harold)--but this series at least gives younger readers something fun to do while working on their reading chops. And, of course, you don't have to read a single word to thoroughly enjoy Flip-o-Rama, Pilkey's "world-famous cheesy animation technique," which lets readers flip pages back and forth to animate the action. (Also includes step-by-step drawing tips from equally fun-loving illustrator Martin Ontiveros.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

It's Ricky Ricotta's birthday, and as a special treat, his parents are taking him and his Mighty Robot to see dinosaurs at the museum. Too bad they've also invited Ricky's little cousin Lucy--she's a real pest! When they get to the museum, all the dinosaurs are missing their heads . . . because an evil spacebunny from Jupiter has used the dino DNA to create Jurassic Jack Rabbits! Now it's up to the entire Ricotta family, including Lucy, to stop them from taking over the planet. With their easy-to-read language and action-packed pictures, the Ricky Ricotta books are ideal for beginning readers.
