Great content - not a durable book, though.......2006-02-01
Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.
Back to the topic at hand, this book counters all of what I just said. This is an outstanding textbook by any standard. I'd even recommend it for non-students who have an interest in geology and earth science. Combined with a good instructor, this book makes an excellent resource and a surprisingly enjoyable read. I had virtually no personal interest in geology going into the class, but this book communicates a good deal of practical knowledge as well as just plain interesting trivia.
I do have some issues with the book in a physical sense. Content-wise, /How Does Earth Work/ is fantastic. But the design of the book is troublesome. It's large, unwieldy, and the cover is very flimsy. A book this size should really be hardcover, because the glossy pages are just too vulnerable to folds and tears even with careful use. I take good care of my books, and don't just randomly slop them into my backpack. Even with all my efforts to keep the book in tact, it already has minor creases in the cover, bent corners on pages, and other slight damage. This is after just two weeks of class, folks.
The book looks great, with all the color photos and such... But the physical design of it is not at all realistic for college use. Make peace with the fact that you're not going to be able to re-sell this book for near new price at the end of the semester. Beyond that, /How Does Earth Work/ is a great resource, and one of the very few college books I'd highly recommend to students and non-students alike.

"Mom, How Does An Earthquake Happen?".......2000-03-28
This book is the single most helpful book I have ever run across in trying to explain to my very visual son what happens when different earth phenomens occur. The experiments in this book brought to life the workings of our planet to my son in the 2nd grade. That was 5 years ago and he still remembers the experiments we did out of this book. The experiments can be recreated out of ordinary household/garage items. You will be amazed. I submit you will learn more about "How The Earth Works" than you thought possible. This will generate conversations with your children that will last a lifetime. Stop being afraid of science. Go through this book with your children.

ASIN: 0898625890 |
Book Description
This classic work presents a cognitive-semiotic framework for understanding how maps work as powerful, abstract, and synthetic spatial representations. Explored are the ways in which the many representational choices inherent in mapping interact with information processing and knowledge construction, and how the resulting insights can be used to make informed symbolization and design decisions. A new preface to the paperback edition situates the book within the context of contemporary technologies. As the nature of maps continues to evolve, Alan MacEachren emphasizes the ongoing need to think systematically about the ways people interact with and use spatial information.
Customer Reviews:
Solid book, full of insight.......2001-11-01
This is an exceptionally thorough guide to map representation both in design and function. If you love maps or use them a lot in your work, this is a truly great book to own. It covers both functional and lexical mapping techniques from both visual perception/cognition and semiotic design perspectives. Pose any question about mapping and this book can probably help you find the answer to it. This book will especially please information designers/architects.
so you think you know cognitive-semiotic approaches to maps?.......2000-05-27
My copy of this book is now chock full of scribbles in the margin - not doodles, mind you, but ideas and questions for research in cartographic design. There are a few doodles, too, but they're doodles of maps. The book asks as many questions as it answers, and as such makes a great text for researchers, students, and folks who want to look at what the future of cartography could be...

How to Dig a Hole to the Other Side of the World
ASIN: 1556524420 |
Book Description
Earth science comes alive for children 6 to 9 through 60 engrossing games, activities, and experiments. Kids “core sample” a filled cupcake and discover plate tectonics by floating graham cracker continents on a molten mantle of molasses. They learn how heat changes rocks by seeing how separate ingredients disappear when they bake Rice Krispie Treats. More activities show what causes earthquakes and what kinds of buildings resist their force. Growing sugar and salt crystals, “fossilizing” plastic insects, and modeling a variety of volcanoes add to the learning and the fun. Eight of the activities are tasty as well as informative. Silly songs help children remember new words and concepts, and a resource section gives inexpensive sources for rocks, minerals, and fossils. All the projects have been tested in homes and schools to make sure they are safe, effective, and fun.

Is Life With Her an Endless Game of Chess? Ever look skyward, after yet another frustrating encounter with her, yelling aloud: Why is she so impossible? Why can't I figure her out? You've heard that men and women are from different planets, and that, somehow, we must patiently accept, celebrate, understand, and navigate these differences. Right? Marc Rudov says, "BALONEY"!
Customer Reviews:
This Book will Save You Money and Grief.......2007-06-09
This really lays out today's female human in simple and easy to understand terms. Looking back, I can relate to what Marc is saying. His basic tenant is that you figure her out early and if she displays certian behaviors up front, cut your losses NOW. I know she's cute and sexy and it's hard to resist her feminine charm. You may have already slept with her and she was a fantastic lover, but get over it before it's too late. Marc's point is to help you decipher certian traits that are a likely sign of things to come down the road, leading to divorce and you losing half your net-worth. Even worse, having to pay child support for the next 18 years.
BE AWARE GENTLEMEN!
The only thing about his self-preservation strategy is that it seems to limit the available field of potential candidates even more than it already is. I mean once you follow his "no-nonsense" advice there are very few decent women left. He would say, "don't settle and don't accept the abuse". But most of the women out there seem to have the negative traits he says to run from. I've met them with all the hang-ups and mindsets and few of the virtues. My mistake in the past was hanging-on too long, thinking it will work out. I saw all the signs and wanted to ignore them. Eventually, BAM! - right upside my head.
What is "no-nonsense" about this book is to not waste time hoping she'll end up being OK or changing. "Hope is not a strategy".
Go to Marc's website and check out what this brave man is doing in the media to defy the agenda of the Feminist 2.0 double standard. He's an articulate and "no-nonsense" debator who loves and respects women, while unmasking their version of equality.
Calling it like it is.......2006-11-10
Marc's book is indeed simple, straight-forward and no-nonsense. He reveals and explains the simple truths and consequences of our relationship drives and choices. Obviously having learned from his own experience, Mark is emerging as a leader in respectful dialogue with, and about, women. This is the kind of book that signals the stirrings of long overdue change; a wake up call that rips right through the core of our society's long held, contradictory, mutually exclusive and dysfunctional beliefs about what a man "should" be (often as dictated by "entitled" women - as he explains), and offers us the awareness that we have the option to not play along. Against the backdrop of that option, we can be much choosier about whom we decide to be with, what we will and will not tolerate from women (and ourselves), and how to protect ourselves from emotional pain, financial ruin and legal nightmares. Ultimately it is a book about respecting women, by being man enough to have the balls to respect ourselves.
This book sucks.......2006-11-04
I have never purchased such a bunch of crap in my life. This is the got to be the worst "Man's guide" I have ever read. This guy has got no game to speak of and his best advice is to not drive 60 miles out of your way and get husstled out of a bunch of money by some chick. Duh!!! [...]
"The Book Everyone Should Read".......2006-10-14
A book that starts you off the right way -- the second chapter is entitled "Who Are You?" -- and the third is "Who is She?" -- because without knowing yourself and what you're looking for, you're destined to fail eventually. You see, this book is not just about dating -- there's self-help involved here as well.
I feel the same way as Marc does on many issues involving men and women -- but his story of the man with a Porsche sounded familiar and made me realize a few things about myself. I won't get into this "mini-transformation" I had here, but last month, instead of buying a $100K+ luxury sports car -- I bought a $30K sedan instead.
My new car isn't exactly "cool", it's not sexy, it's not that expensive -- but it suits me just fine and I saved a lot of money -- and on top of that, it automatically filters out women who would think of me as a potential "ATM Machine".
Heck, I guess in a way Marc helped me realize this in a crystal clear way that he actually saved me close to $100,000, and saved me from future headaches with a "Princess".
Make the small investment -- that's right, an investment. You'd probably waste way more than the cost of this book by buying drinks for women you meet at a bar.
Also, I recommend you visit Marc's site (Google his name if you have to). Articles, podcasts, video -- lots of information there.
A practical guide for independent men.......2006-10-04
This is a straightforward, concise book about how men can avoid wasted time, wasted money, and needless stress in their search for the perfect mate. Rudov reinforces the moral foundation that men need in order to reject chivalry, double standards, and needless burdens simply because they are male. He helps identify signals and signs in a woman's speech and behavior that ought to send any self-respecting man in the other direction. He also gives very valuable advice on how to engage in effective seduction of a woman, without having to buy her attention or fool her in any way.
The most striking thing about this book is the way everything seems non-controversial and completely sensible, and yet flies in the face of everything westernized society teaches men about masculinity and manliness. Western culture teaches men to bear the burdens, to sacrifice their health, money, and even their dreams to be the protectors and providers of this world. What an incredible burden that is -- and what an incredible relief Rudov's perspective is in response to the ridiculous gender roles so often assigned to men.
Rudov's book is a must-read for men of any age, but especially so for men in their early 20s (too young to have yet made any intractible errors in their lives). I wish I had read it at that age. What a gift this book would have been. As it stands, I consider this a perfect gift for any man just starting out on the path of life -- or any man who has taken the wrong path of romance and wants to turn around.
This book was well worth my time and investment. I highly recommend it.

Being from North Carolina, it was delightful to see Cape Hatteras Light on the front end paper. Lighthouses are significant in NC and used as a unit theme by many teachers. This book shows not only lighthouses from around the country but presents the history and function of lighthouses suitable for pre-school and primary grade children. The print is large and the illustrations are concise.

Book Description
When we experience the powerful force of a waterfall, the elusive beauty of a rainbow, or the stark strength of a craggy expanse of cliff many of us have perceived "something else" that goes beyond the five senses: feelings of peace, comfort, healing, and inspiration. The author shows how to use these intuitive impressions for healing and meditation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2006-03-19
This book serves as an excellent introduction to those who want to attune to the subtle energies of nature. It is well researched, concise and is definitely a must read!
Welcome to the Invisible World.......2004-11-07
I often recommend this book and it is excellent on so many different levels.
The Deva Handbook is a great reference for people who want to work with nature spirits. Altman gives all the basics on devas and places of power, citing such well-known clairvoyants as Geoffrey Hodson and Dora Van Gelder Kunz. He writes from an ecological point of view, encouraging readers to have communion with the devas.
Four factors can help facilitate this communion: a genuine interest in working with nature spirits; approaching nature with feelings of wonder, curiosity and respect; being open to the psychological, mental and spiritual possibilities nature spirit communion can bring about; and cultivating an awareness of and sensitivity to the natural world.
The book has great black and white nature photographs and is a comprehensive overview for readers wanting to know more about devas and nature spirits. Unlike most books on similar subjects, his focus is on two-way communication, emphasizing humility and alignment with the devic realm. With clear writing and an extensive bibliography, it is an excellent choice for those interested in further exploration of the invisible world.
Altman writes that living reality is always a changing reality. "When we embrace the reality of change, we become more open to what the 'now moment' has to teach us."
Worth Twice The Price.......2000-09-13
This book is both sensible and inspiring. Of particular value is the considerate and respectful focus upon ordinary landscapes in addition to well known, global sites with established powerful devic activity. Angel Falls and Ayers Rock, etc. are covered very well but Mr. Altman gives equal time to wildflowers and trees encountered in the urban Brooklyn landscape. A wide variety of earth based cultures are included for consideration of belief structures, myths, and energetic relationship to the devic realms. I'd love to buy this one for everybody I know - novice, scholar, and full throttle green men and women in the making.
