5 out of 5 stars Worth the Money.......2007-09-27

I remember 2 Minutes After I bought this book I regretted it, who would spend $24 on a book, about a mompreneur. Afterall I've read many like it and found them all to be elementary. Not this book, I will use this book like my entreprenuer Bible. She discusses so many things that many don't know about. I've bought Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting Your Own Business and I found myself dragging through it, because it was so dull but informative. This woman excites me on my journey, she gives me a flashlight so I can see the many obstacles facing any female entrepreneur. She helps women see that there are people who are out there ready to take advantage of a womans naiveness. Some of the information is basic like the patenting stuff, which I know a great deal about, but much of it is very interesting because she's actually gone through it and can tell you what she was faced with at each level of her business development. It is an inspirational story and a how-to guide wrapped in pink. If she can take an idea like wuvit to the next level and make a million dollars off of something as seeminlgy simple as popcorn wrapped in cotton, then surely I can do the same or better. Don't You Think!!!

5 out of 5 stars Long awaited guide!.......2007-09-13

This is the long awaited guide I've been looking for! Its detailed and tells you exactly where to go to find the answer! The book is humours, amibitious, & motivating!

3 out of 5 stars Has its flaws but good information.......2007-08-20

I'm a little torn on this book. It has its pros and cons.

Pros:
- Good information that can be used if you can digest it in a logical order.
- The author has a good story to tell, but I don't think this book did it justice.

Cons:
- If this book was edited, then the editor should be fired. The organization is horrible. There is no logical order to the way the information is presented and a lot of the information is repeated. It's very dry and I found myself only reading 2 to 3 pages at a time. I do not think this is the author's fault. Her publisher just didn't do a very good job preparing this book for the market. It's like they just tossed her random thoughts into the book without thinking it through first.

- Also, like the reviewer said below, this book is discouraging. Maybe she's trying to show you the reality of bringing your product to market, but her choices weren't always on target. There is a dose of negativity in her book that will probably scare some people away from starting their business. Don't be scared away. I recommend reading "Secrets of Millionaire Moms." I read that at the same time as this book and that book is inspiring and easy to digest.

All in all I think the author has a good story to tell and I am intrigued. She's just not a writer and probably got little help from her publisher. This book is not easy to read; it's almost like reading an IRS booklet. But it does have good info that can be used. Read it with an open mind and try to pass over the discouraging comments.

2 out of 5 stars A riveting story, but actually DISCOURAGED me.......2007-07-16

I always thought the idea of owning a business would be great. I've dabbled on Ebay, with the whole intent being to stay at home and raise my kids while making money on the side. When I saw the title of this book it inspired me....maybe if I read it I could find some inspiration to start a business myself?
While the book itself is a good read (I didn't want to put it down!) I found the author's tenacity a bit scary. The product itself has limited potential....like a previous poster said, it's a fad product. Once everyone owns one, your income potential has pretty much dried up. The author fought really hard to make her business succeed by begging and borrowing, often at great personal risk. She often sacrificed time spent with family in her quest to make her business succeed. This to me represents the biggest conflict in her quest....the title "Mommy Millionaires" implies that this is something a Mommy can do "in her spare time" or when she isn't caring for her children. When in fact after reading this book I am more apt to believe the author traded in her time with her children FOR the business.....she even speaks about missing her children's birthday parties because she was too busy trying to promote her business.
I give this book 2 stars because it is a good read....but it misses its mark as an inspiration for other "mompreneurs". There are plenty of families out there who can successfully manage family and business. Moms shouldn't have to choose!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on the reality of starting your own business.......2007-07-16

Although I am not a mother, I stopped when I saw the word Millionaire on Kim Lavine's book cover and decided to take a peek. What I found was a detailed account of what it was like to start your own business from the very beginning. Starting one's own business can be very daunting, especially if you do not have a mentor. This book gives you the step by step guide that you need without omitting any of the details. She even explains the consequences of not taking certain steps with illustrations from her own experience. I am finding this book to be incredibly helpful as I read through it a second time, outlining the actions I need to take in order to be successful. It is timely, humorous, encouraging, engaging and insightful and when I'm a millionaire she'll be one of the people I thank!

Book Description

"What happened to the passion we started with?

Why aren't we as close as we used to be?"

PROBLEM: If you are a woman who is unfulfilled in your marriage...if you feel unheard or overburdened...if you quietly live in a state of slow-burn resentment...

PROBLEM: If you are a man unhappy that your partner seems so unhappy with you...if you feel bewildered, unappreciated, or betrayed...

This book offers a solution

Bestselling author and nationally renowned therapist Terrence Real unearths the causes of communication blocks between men and women in this groundbreaking work. Relationships are in trouble; the demand for intimacy today must be met with new skills, and Real -- drawing on his pioneering work on male depression -- gives both men and women those skills, empowering women and connecting men, radically reversing the attitudes and emotional stumbling blocks of the patriarchal culture in which we were raised. Filled with powerful stories of the couples Real treats, no other relationship book is as straight talking or compelling in its innovative approach to healing wounds and reconnecting partners with a new strength and understanding.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Relational Intimacy in an Era of Changing Roles.......2007-08-31

This is an excellent book. Real has thought through couple's issues in a smart way, refreshingly different than many who have preceded him.

In this book, Real faces head-on the reality that many women come into couples work with fierce anger, frustrated by trying to achieve true emotional intimacy with their man. His premise is that many women's responsibilities and aspirations have grown as part of the women's movement and their resulting, empowered roles, during decades when many men's roles and expectations have progressed less dramatically. As difficult as the tone of the anger and complaint, Real suggests the substance of women's frustrations is right-on, which will provide some much needed vindication for women readers.

This book is full of composite examples of couples-therapy sessions where the woman's attitude sounds in complaint and withering anger. The man in these examples sounds clueless, and deeply hurt by the woman's anger. Real's prototypical woman comes off like a nag, shaming while complaining. It is at this point where men typically recoil avoiding facing women's needs, and their own fears.

In Real's analysis, unconscious and almost always unacknowledged entitlement characterizes the man's side of the relationship problems. We were raised to quietly sit back in much that happens in the home, letting things take care of themselves. In reality, things don't really take care of themselves; women are taking care of them. Men's toughest work, it seems, is traditionally as breadwinner outside the home. Once home, perhaps enlightened some by the women's movement, we may do some chores and help some with the kids. But we may also quietly avoid the challenging work of true relational intimacy with our woman. The man often sees no problem, or at least no rational issue.

The man may think, "what's the problem: I am nice and thoughtful. I don't rage or abuse....." But the rub may be in his disengagement, and in his urgent avoidance of shame. Having studied male depression (I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression"), Real understands that men's issues are often driven by shame, where women's are often driven by fear.

Because women are most heavily tasked with maintaining relationship, and are very often dependent on the man for economic and child-rearing reasons, women's fears are usually first expressed circumspectly, on eggshells, rather than angrily. The fierce anger arises later -- after more delicate strategies have maddeningly failed. The anger feels like poison to the man.

Real's approach is much needed, and this book not only explains unflinchingly, but suggests ways out of the deadlock. There have been important contributions along the way - e.g., Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples. And there are libraries full of hyped up, supposed love-life panaceas. This fellow has a smart, tough set of insights, with ideas for finding our way out of the wilderness of too many current relationships. Highly recommended, for both men and women, and for couples therapists.

Real has since published an excellent follow up book structured a bit more as a "how to" guide: The New Rules of Marriage: What You Need to Know to Make Love Work. This is also very highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Not convinced.......2007-06-08

Mr. Real asserts as an established fact that traumatizing events in childhood cause us to adopt patriarchal male and female roles in our adult lives and in our relationships. Even if this were true - and for the record I wasn't convinced - he has precious little in his book that a lay reader can take away and use. I found his writing style to be pedantic and touchy-feely at the same time (not an easy thing to pull off), and sprinkled with long stretches of incomprehensible gibberish. Why use one little word when ten big ones will do? The guy just wouldn't get to the point.

Professionals in this field may have a better appreciation for the style and content of this book, but I would not recommend it to those in need of counsel.

5 out of 5 stars How Can I get through to you?.......2007-05-12

This book was written before the Marriage book Terry wrote. In some ways I got more information that I needed. If you are trying to improve any relationship this book is a must read. Terry Real is right on!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for therapists as well as couples.......2006-10-22

I read this book to get continuing eductaion credits for my social work license. It's completely changed how I look at the therapy process. It's also completely changed how I look at my marriage. It provides an effective, yet not impossibly complicated, roadmap through the dilemmas and no-win situations in which couples find themselves. It gave me insights into what I was doing wrong, and ideas of how I could quickly change.

Is this a male bashing book? I thought so at first. As much as I liked the book, I resented being stereotyped as a male with a certain commitment to accomplishment at the expense of vulnerability and feelings. I'm actually just the opposite, a product of 1960's encounter groups. Toward the end of the book, though, Real does acknowledge that every now and then there is a male who has the opposite problem. He's in touch with feelings, the nurturing side of life, but perhaps viewed as a loser in the world of accomplishments. And that fits me dead on!

The book's style isn't typical for a book about therapy. There's a great deal of self-revelation on Real's part, and also many passages that would pass as high-caliber fiction were they not obviously based on fact. Real is a skillful writer. And that makes him easier to read.

5 out of 5 stars Not male-bashing, but patriarchy bashing.......2006-03-07

I am applying to graduate school to be a Marriage and Family Counselor and I believe this book will be my guiding star. I've read a few reviews that claim it to be "male-bashing" or "all women are right, all men are wrong". Those who have written this must have not read the caring, empathic way that Terry has addressed the hurt that disconnection has caused these men he chronicles. I have many wonderful men in my life - a caring father, two wonderful older brothers - and I understand Terry's point that masculine in not necessarily an assignation of gender. There are masculine and feminine qualities, and both genders can have any of them. Predominantly, the men have masculine ones - however, did these reviewers not notice the example of the woman who fled to the "power-up" position in a masculine fashion? The response is wrong - not the gender that has this response forced upon them.

Relationships, or relational skills, are feminine skills. Men are not generally taught them - this does not make them "wrong" and it isn't "bashing" to say so. Terry's practical guide on how to reestablish connection speaks to the men, yes, but also to the woman - so she can learn how to make her voice heard in a respectful, loving way.

My advice to any man who would like to read this is to put down your shield, and realize that your women want to LOVE you, not beat you. That's patriarchial thinking right there - this isn't a war. It's a relationship, and it's about love.

Book Description

Janis Abrahms Spring's long–awaited second book expertly tackles the sensitive issue of forgiveness by giving real people a new model from which they can heal from interpersonal injuries, by debunking myths, and by controversially setting the record straight that forgiveness is not the only all–or–nothing sound response to injury.

The topic of forgiveness is fast becoming one of the key concepts in psychotherapy. With illuminating anecdotes and case material based on nearly 30 years of clinical experience, Janis Spring controversially reveals that we have more options than just forgiving or not forgiving. From forgotten birthdays to deliberate sexual offences, infidelity and disloyalty, How Can I Forgive You? takes a bold new position that frees us from the corrosive effects of hate and helps us to make peace with both the person who has hurt us and with ourselves. By providing concrete, step–by–step instructions for both the hurt party and the offender, Spring brings to light a new, empowering model that is bound to change forever the way we think about forgiveness, regardless of whether or not the offending party is willing to apologise.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How To Forgive.......2007-03-08

Dr. Janis Abrahms Spring has written a wonderful book here. She talks about refusing to forgive, which breeds bitterness, and Cheap Forgiveness, which is "an inauthentic act of peacekeeping that resolves nothing." This is usually comes about when the hurt party is fearful about losing a relationship with someone who hurt them, or where the hurt person believes quick forgiveness is what's required by their spiritual beliefs. Ultimately, Cheap Forgiveness is a position of weakness. It doesn't build trust in the relationship or heal the hurt person. It just sweeps the offense under the rug.

Genuine Forgiveness, according to Dr. Spring, is the most fulfilling type of forgiveness but requires the participation of both the hurt party and the offender. It's a transaction, and is conditional on repentance and restitution on the part of the offender. In other words, the offender has to acknowledge the pain the hurt party felt, apologize genuinely, non-defensively and responsibly, and work hard to regain the trust of the hurt person. Only then can the hurt party offer the offender Genuine Forgiveness -- a vital building block for future relationship between the two.

But sometimes the offender is not available to participate in forgiveness. She might be dead, or he might be unwilling to admit that there was a wrong committed or deny that he has any responsibility. What then? Dr. Spring offers a third way -- a beautiful, thoughtful, helpful third way -- Acceptance. This is a path toward healing which the hurt party can travel alone. In her book, Dr. Spring suggests ten steps to get to Acceptance of the offense. By working through each of these steps, a person can learn and grow beyond the pain, beyond the hurt, and move on.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, thought provoking book........2007-01-12

After reading this author's "After the Affair" several times, this book is a great next step. She gives solid information, with good direction, without being judgemental. Her case histories are also helpful and poignant.

5 out of 5 stars Living well is the best revenge!.......2006-11-06

Excellent self-help advice about dealing with betrayal from others. It tells you how you can choose alternatives in responding to betrayal other than total forgiveness. Importantly, a person must accept what has happened (i.e., the betrayal), analyze the situation, recognize and choose from alternatives about dealing with the betrayal, and "move on." Revenge or retribution, a natural impulse, is shown to just be counter-productive and prolong the emotional pain. I have found the information in this book very helpful in my own life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-04

This is an excellant book for anyone who is trying to work on issues of forgiveness. I have often forgiven too easily, and sometimes not at all. This book offers explanations as to why we do this, and also how to work through these issues, and change where we need to. There are no guilt trips in this book, which I found very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Forgiveness is True Forgiveness.......2006-10-01

Written in a compassionate and wise manner intended for those who have experienced a very harrowing situation, this book explores and offers emotionally healthy tools for healing the deepest hurts inflicted by someone very close to us. Based on real-life case stories the book explores in a reality-oriented manner the paradox of true forgiveness that allows deep and complete healing for a person. This is not about blaming the victim or sugar-coated attempts at glossing over mud with whip cream ... it is getting to the core hurt and really mending a broken heart so it is stronger and wiser and safer than before. A must read!

5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-05-26

I really liked this book. It gives a large overview of body language and how to read it. It's a bit dry and contains quite a lot of information. Expect to have to re-read it a few times to understand and be able to apply the information contained within.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful for me .......2007-05-25

I had an unusual reason to order this book -- my child has a mild case of Asperger's Syndrome. This means that she lacks the skills to interpret body language unless she learns it as a "second language." So I bought it with her in mind. As I read it, I was surprised how extremely helpful it was for ME. I honestly never realized how much I was missing! The skills it teaches will help with relationships of all kinds, business and personal. I truly believe readers will find it valuable and fascinating -- not to mention well written! Thank you, Gregory Hartley and Maryann Karinch!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Informative.......2007-05-12

I found this book compelling. The wrting style is conversational and clear; the information is detailed and well presented. I was fascinated by the wealth of detail on the influence of such factors as gender, culture, emotional state, etc. on body language. People are not reduced to stereotypes but considered as individuals and readers are given a useful system for taking this into account as they analyze someone's body language.

Having now finished the book and begun to apply what I've learned, I don't think I'll ever watch a television talkshow or newscast in quite the same way.

I bought this book at a public book show put on by Scholastic outside a cafe where I sometimes eat lunch. I'm not unfamiliar with the kitchen and cooking, although I'm by no means a gourmet. But I've long been embarrassed by the fact that I just plain didn't know how to make a lot of "basic" items that a lot of cooks learn from experience. There were also a lot of gaps in my knowledge: for example, I knew what separated eggs were but I didn't know how to do it without making a gawdawful mess and imperfectly separated parts.

Enter this book. It's got a lot of good basic stuff, the kind that doesn't require expensive ingredients or unusual cooking implements. It's more than enough for good meal planning and many of the recipes are useful for the fairly competent cook who just wants something quick and cheap, but still tasty. The format of the recipes is also very easy to follow: ingredients are listed in the order of appearance and there are notes that explain timing issues ("while you are waiting for this to happen, do that.") There are also useful sidebars about various cooking-related issues; including, to continue my example above, one about methods for separating eggs.

Those looking for more adventure in the kitchen are probably going to be sorely let down, and mentions of microwaves are few and far between. But for someone looking for the basics in order to facilitate good meals and meal planning with good time management, this is an excellent choice...even if the title is a little bit embarrassing.

5 out of 5 stars Good for any beginner.......2006-09-06

For a person who normally burns food and can't get things right, this is definitely the book for you. I've had great success with all the recipes I've done so far and couldn't say more about it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who is new to cooking and doesn't want to deal with any elaborate, complicated ingredients. I recommend the book so much I think I may end up buying my brother a copy so that he can use in college :)

Book Description

If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), you must be pretty familiar with the link between your condition and nutrition. Instead of adding another voice to the chorus of people telling you what you shouldn't eat, Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should be having almost every day.

Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome begins with an overview of IBS. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable picture of the disease- a picture that is based on the latest medical information. Readers gain a better understanding of what IBS is and what they can do to limit the impact of its symptoms.

Also included are dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes, plus supermarket and restaurant advice and sample weekly menu plans that are totally grounded in reality.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars NOT Consistent with the current research.......2007-04-24

Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-01-09

This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars Totally contridictory information.......2006-04-23

On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.

"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful guide.......2004-03-10

I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me. The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet. I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel. A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.

3 out of 5 stars Good book if it's not the only one you read........2002-08-28

This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Make Me (But I can be persuaded).......2007-04-10

This book is an excellent reference for training your children. I wish I had read it when my son was younger. I would highly recommend it. Cynthia Tobias is a gifted writer, and makes the book a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my relationship with my son.......2007-03-23

I was always having struggles with my son. Every instruction became a long and frustrating discussion. Just trying to get him in the tub became a hide and seek game every night. Then I read Cynthia's book. It changed my relationship with my son. Cynthia gives excellent tips on how to talk with an SWC. This book brought a new and refreshing way of helping my child do what is asked without the struggle and in a much more positive way. How you word your instruction is the key. I highly recommend this book and have given several copies away. I keep extras around just in case I run across someone that struggles as I did. It was a relationship saver!

4 out of 5 stars Parenting Insights for impassioned children.......2007-02-18

Tape format makes it easy to get the information and strategy tips. A good product for a parent on the go--and perhaps in the car alot!!
As a strong-willed impassioned parent who is parenting a strong willed impassioned child, I appreciate that Ms Tobias offered some insights and strategies to defuse the combat. I have a better understanding of ME and my child! On day one after I had listened to her tapes (while running errands) My child comes in the kitchen in the morning, only to be disappointed by his scrambled egg breakfast. Instead of my being upset and saying.."you will eat it or else.." I tried Ms Tobias' tactic. I said, "OK, well we have a problem and I need your help. You have had A, B, C, and D for all different breakfasts this week...which was alot of variety. I need your help then in coming up with some new breakfast ideas." What happened next? Dear child felt "heard" and sat down to eat his breakfast, and we have had no complaints for a week! No suggestions yet either.... BUT as any parent of an SWC (strong willed child) knows We parents have to pick our battles. Also these kids were created by God to be this way for a purpose. We have to help guide them to use their strong convictions and passions properly.

5 out of 5 stars Super book.......2007-02-06

I could not put this book down! After struggling with my child and not understanding what was going on with her, I realize I have a strong-willed child! Ms. Tobias goes into detail describing how you can identify a SWC and presents many strategies in dealing with them. I know I have a very special child and Ms. Tobias gives practical advice in helping parents help a SWC to become a successful adult!

5 out of 5 stars Strategies for Life.......2006-08-19

Mrs. Tobias is right on the money with teaching strategies of learning skills and relationships with the strong-willed child. I bought this book at a convention for Homeschoolers. I bought several other books written by Cynthia Tobias. Easy to read and understand. Don't be surprise if you read somethings about yourself. I did!

I purchase duplicate books from Amazon to give to my child's teachers to read and keep in school library. There is something for everyone to learn by reading this well written book!

5 out of 5 stars Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome? : A Guide For Friends and Family.......2007-10-06

I was looking for a book to share with family and friends to help them understand the uniqueness of my son who struggles with Aspergers. I sent this book to my son's school and the teacher read it to the class to help them find out more about Aspergers and show that he is not much different from them. This is an excellent book. I recommend it highly. It's not a long book and is suitable for any age child.

5 out of 5 stars My son now knows he's not 'alone'.......2007-10-04

I searched everywhere for a book like this. There are books about Aspergers for parents, teachers, etc. But I wanted a book for my 13 year old son. For the first time, my son realizes he's not 'weird', he's not 'odd'. He's not alone. We read through the book together and I've even seen him reading it alone. At 13, an age of transition, this book was exactly what he needed to understand and be proud of who he is.

5 out of 5 stars Great information to share.......2007-09-03

This book was exactly what I hoped for. I will be using this book to share with all the fourth grade classes in my son's school this year. Its format is easy to read and understand. Because my son looks and acts so "normal", it is hard for the other kids in his school to understand that he does have some issues. I trust that this book, along with some q & a time with me, will make it clear enough to them.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!.......2007-08-26

Although this book is very short, my 9 yr old son loved it! Every time he read a page, he said "Hey, that's just like me!" This book gave him some ideas on how to explain AS to his peers and helped him feel like he is not the only person in the world with Asperger's. It also helped me realize some things about the way that he thinks that I did not know about. This book was interesting, yet simple enough for his 7 yr old sister to read. I would recommend this to anyone that has a grade school child with AS.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for Explaining AS!.......2007-07-25

I love this book. It was an incredibly useful tool when I spoke to my son's class about Asperger's. It is easy-to-read and simplifies this topic for kids to understand, but provides enough information as to be of help for adults. Best of all, the book stresses the incredible value of all individuals, but especially the unique strengths that Aspies possess. I've bought multiple copies to share with teachers, family, Scout leaders, etc. A valuable tool!!!

Book Description

Threatened with a rare and life-threatening cancer, a scientist works with his doctors to make decisions in the face of uncertainty

After patients are diagnosed with a dread disease, they learn two daunting facts: (1) that no doctor has all the answers, and (2) that there are no answers, only odds. For the patients (and their families) who want to be involved in the key choices regarding treatment, Stephen Schneider is the ideal guide. A climate scientist, his life's work is decision making in the face of great uncertainty. This important book is both his own gripping story of working with his doctors to get the best care possible, and also a brilliant critique of the flawed system under which most doctors must now practice.

The vital, even life-saving lessons of the book include: advice on obtaining and interpreting odds; how to seek better treatments that may not fit the usual "standard of care;" ways to get treated as a unique individual and not the mythical Average Patient; how to recognize the decisions that you rather than the doctors must make; and, most important, how to build a partnership with a sometimes reluctant doctor.

"Both I and my wife [a cancer survivor] find your book terrific. In many ways, it is without precedent." -Gary Schoolnik, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Immunology, Stanford University School of Medicine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A useful, special case.......2007-08-16

Clearly, Schneider is not an ordinary patient to begin with, so his is a special case. Nevertheless, there is plenty of good stuff to think about and much good advice given. You can't do it his way, but he can point you in helpful directions.

I enjoyed reading it and learned from it.

2 out of 5 stars One Man's Journey.......2007-05-14

I sent this book to a friend when he was diagnosed with squamous cell. He did not like it. He said it was very specific to that particular patient. To be fair, he only gave it 50 pages.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story.......2007-02-23

Most of us at one time or another will have to navigate the medical system that is more concerned with making money than health care. The author shows you have to be on your toes, learn as much as you can, and be able to challenge the doctor. For your own health, read this book.

If you doctor doesn't like you questioning, better to find one who doesn't mind before the need is urgent. I've found that if you challenge and question your hired talent, they will do a better job. In this context, questioning the doctor may get him to say "no- you can't do that, but why don't we try this instead?"

It always helps to be an intelligent consumer. Even if you aren't treated as well as the author was as a male, a Stanford professor and a PhD, you'll still get better care than if you are passive and let the doctor make all the decisions.

2 out of 5 stars The Patient From Hell.......2007-02-12

Not well written, I flipped past pages of dialog, opinion , politics
(global warminng?) cutsey remarks and lots of attitude to find nuggest of facts. We all cheer his successful treatment, no doubt about that, but thanks to modern science, certain facts in his experience are already out-of-date and no longer in use. My oncologist listens to me and all options are on the table. Why Mr Schneider needs cudos or takes credit for changing procedures at Stanford University Teaching Hospital by simply talking to his oncologist is beyond me. Since I had purchased the book, I wrote a book review in the cover and donated it to the bookcart at the cancer center where I am treated. O.K. reading.

4 out of 5 stars A very educational book.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent book for the following reasons:

1 - It explains step-by-step, the cancer treatment experienced by the author himself, and includes chemotherapy, surgery, radiation treatment, and finally a bone marrow transplant. I found the treatment for cancer much more complicated then I had expected. It is also no joy-ride.

2 - This book could have been called `Negotiating Medical Treatments' as the author successfully negotiates with doctors for better treatment procedures, and better cancer drugs, resulting in a better outcome for his serious condition. His personal journey highlights the failings of the current HMO-style medical systems that provides an ordinary level of treatment, whereas he seeks a premium service for his life-threatening condition as a Stage IV cancer patient. His options are to go to an advanced cancer clinic in say Europe to get very high quality care but at his own cost, or use his current medical service and negotiate premium treatments every step of the way. He chooses the latter.

3 - The author is a very astute person, a PhD scientist, who uncovers many of the flaws in his cancer treatment protocol, as he progresses through the treatment over several months.

This book will help those who require treatment for cancer, by helping them to navigate through the medical maze of doctors and hospitals.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-12

It is very well written in simple language which is easily absorbed by the reader

5 out of 5 stars Simple and straightforward.......2007-02-28

I like this book for its simplicity and getting straight to the point of what to do, as well as what not to do, with this disease. I keep the list of things to avoid eating on my kitchen cabinet as a daily reminder. I found this book to be very helpful to me in my treatment and management of acid reflux, along with the information provided with my Prevacid prescription.

4 out of 5 stars Shockingly helpful to most patients ..........2006-07-10

It is truly astonishing how many competent MDs treating acid reflux don't warn their patients of the dietary restrictions facing those who suffer from acid reflex. This applies not only to family doctors but incredibly ENTs! As such, patients are strongly advised to "understand their own bodies." All our bodies are different. Some patients will have strong negative reactions to chocolate. Others to orange juice. Some to red wine. Some to apple juice. To fix acid reflux problems - and it is almost always fixable - it is critical to understand what particular foods and beverages are causing it. This book will help properly identify.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy this book - recipes NOT for acid reflux.......2006-07-08

Don't buy this book if you have acid reflux and want some helpful recipies. Many of the recipes include ingredients that most people with reflux CAN NOT have. You'll have more luck picking up a random cookbook and making changes yourself. Some of the general acid reflux info was OK, but since I bought it mainly for some good and easy recipes...total waste of money. It was pretty clear that the author just mindlessly slapped some stuff together and is not an expert in this area. Don't buy this book! I wish I hadn't.

5 out of 5 stars Tell me what to eat if I have acid reflux.......2006-06-26

This is a wonderful book. It told me more than I thought it would. Just not what to eat but reason that this happens and what it can turn into. This was the best money I have spent in a long time. It also helped me with the Doctors visit and things I should have known already. Thanks a million.
