As with all the Audubon guides, the glossy photographs; durable binding and leatherette cover; and cross-referencing the index via the color plates, are what make these guides important.

This rock field guide has a good glossary of terms that is helpful. Also, there are identification keys for color, fabric, and hardness of specimens, along with descriptions indicating areas to locate them.

Unlike the animal and plant field guides, this one hasn't gone out of date like the others. However, the deficencies still apply: the details are pretty general, and the summaries are ridiculously short. Still, this book is one of the best in the series and should be on anyone's shelf that has even a passing interest in geology.

This is a good book for someone who already understands how to use it. There should be an instruction book to go along with it. It has some fine detail in the photos but not in how to look things up by their name. If I had a degree in geology, I would not have a problem using this one, but I don't, so I'm operating under a severe handicap.Is there a guidebook for the Guidebook?

A more serious field guide.......2007-06-29

I bought this book, along with DK/Smithsonian guides to "Rocks & Minerals" and "Gemstones" for my children, one of which is a budding rockhound.

While I am certainly no expert in this area, my very amateur opinion is that this bulky guide is far more scientific and in keeping with traditional field guide format.

The binding is certainly sturdy, and after a short introduction to mineral identification, the book features a photograph of each of the minerals profiled, along with a reference page to the descriptive key that follows. The same is done with rocks.

As a homeschooling mother of two, I would say this book is better for older children or adults with an interest in this field. My 7-yr-old daughter is far more likely to pick up one of the DK/Smithsonian guides (which are separate and less complete) than this one.

I foresee the pages of this book getting a bit more daylight as my children get older.

Highly recommended.

I turn to michaellandonsrock when you are gone.......2007-01-27

I've written to the National Audubon society and several geologists concerning an omission in this book.

I can't remember when Michael Landon and I discovered our mutual love of geology, but it remained a constant in our friendship. Shortly before he began to film for his finest role as Jonathan Smith in "Highway to Heaven", Michael Landon and I embarked upon a geological survey of Northern Canada. Using his celebrity influence, Michael Landon was granted a royal charter from Franz Joseph II, then Prince of Liechtenstein, to finance any mining capital should we discover a new gem to add to the Prince's famous gem-trunk.

We eventually found a quiet piece of land within the traditional lands of the Nis'gl't'k people. After spending seven months documenting and learning their language I anglicised their name. The "Huxtable people" spoke of a cave famous in their stories for being the home of N'gaask'ul'k'ot, or "Gelman." Instinctively, Michael Landon went there, to Gelman's cave. He refused to use anything but a 10 inch hunting knife when quarrying. He furiously knifed at the cave wall for 4 or 6 hours without any apparent consistency to where his knife struck. Suddenly the cave stank. I looked at Michael Landon with contempt, but to my surprise his face was not sheepish. I wondered then where the smell came from. I followed his peepers, and he was using them to look at a gem that lay before his fallow blade. We both knew what we had discovered, but we consulted our Audubon guide. It wasn't listed. In his excitement, Michael Landon first suggested naming it "stinkrock", then "stankrock" and finally "smellrock." I took on a soothing tone to pacify him and delicately suggested we call it the "Landonquicklyite." He put a single finger to his pursed lips, furrowed his brow, squatted, started walking around while squatting, and then eagerly said "let's call it Michael Landon's Rock." Kenneth Waltz later characterised our relationship as having a power imbalance, probably a reason why the gem came to be known among us and in some geological circles as "michaellandonsrock."

In weight comparable to the density of those memories, I still have 10 pounds of michaellandonsrock. I even put some in the rock tumbler and they look nice.

So, perhaps my review is biased, but I hope that in the future the Audubon Society will investigate my claim.

I am the author of two books, "Collecting Fluorescent Minerals" and "The World of Fluorescent Minerals" and needed additional resources for non-fluorescent minerals. This book was nicely done - good illustrations, lots of variety, clearly written - but the information covering fluorescent minerals in this book was not very accurate. Every mineral collector needs several sources to get a good idea of what he or she has and this is one that I will continue to use. This should not be your only book, but it is worth having among your library.

Its a readable book for being technical, its information is mediocre though. Work out examples and pictures very useful in understanding information.

This book has beautiful images and interesting text. A good book for people who love the beach. It would make a good coffee table book. I was disappointed in the lack of depth offered by the text. I was hoping for more in depth geologic information, and a greater variety of stones pictured. This is not the book for you if you want an in depth look at geologic process and the mineral composition of stones that wash up on the beach.

Let's Go Rock Collecting is an excellent book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science Series. My son started with this book when he was 4 (he's now 5). It has great illustrations that capture a child's attention and actual photos of the various rocks described so that the child (and parent) can identify a few basic rocks.

One thing that is really great about this book is the simple illustrations to educate the reader about the Earth's Crust and Solid Rock Layer. There are simple diagrams of:

1. The components of a Volcano
2. Moh's Scale of hardness
3. The formation of sedimentary rocks
4. Metamorphic rock process

The book also ends with a practical suggestion that kids will love and that's how to begin your own rock collection and start to identify the rocks you have.

NOTE: Depending on your view of the age of the earth, you may like to know that this book utilizes millions of years in its descriptions.

lost with a map.......2001-07-06

A friend of mine recently got me interested in rockhounding and we went and purchased this book... Anyway, we went to a random site and the maps, although detailed with mileage, don't show distance to site from areas in california. Example, distance from Barstow to Ludlow? YOU have to go there to see the mileagle sign. Secondly, there needs to be better markers on where to turn for these dirt roads. A few sites were passed due to not being where they "should be". I really would hate to take some unmarked road for 10 miles only find it leads nowhere and then have a problem getting back. The lore and history of the sites was nice along with hints of how to dig or uncover rocks but the maps do leave a bit to be desired. Finally, and most annoyingly, all of the photos were black and white and of low quality. How can one tell what green jasper looks like with a black photo? Blooodstone? Rose quartz? This one portion of the book really was what made me not want to purchase my own copy. Maybe future editions will have better maps and at least a few color photos of the rocks,etc. Thanks for your time, Dean

Rock Solid.......2000-06-08

This book really is solid. It's got some of the best information on everything you'll need to be right in the middle of all that this great big state of California has to offer. I have traveled to 14 sites so far, and almost all of them have been productive and well worth the trip. What I like most is the extra types of information given; like the best season to look for gems and minerals at a particular site, and the specific tools you'll need. Especially appreciated are the alternate maps that are recommended, like the USGS and the BLM, which match up right to the book. Way to go and thank you very much!

Minerals and crystals are among the most beautiful objects on the planet. Their sculptural shapes and intense colors can be mesmerizing. Amazingly these specimens haven't been "enhanced" by cutting or polishing. They are as God made them. These magnificent photographs of the world's greatest collection capture their beauty as well as any book I've ever seen.

From a geology major.......2007-04-09

I use this for my geochemistry/mineralogy class. The descriptions of minerals are very in-depth and good for those who understand what it's describing, but not so good for the layman. The color plates are quite nice. For the layman, I'd recommend the Golden Guide to Rocks and Minerals, as it has more images of the minerals in question. I'm also disappointed at the complete dearth of rock entries in this field guide. As one is most likely to encounter rocks as opposed to standalone minerals in the field, a guide with a greater focus on rocks would have been a great addition. I'm also disappointed that this guide does not go into detail on mineral lattice structures.

I highly reccomend this guide book for anyone who is into rocks, stones, minerals and gems.
There are in-depth explanations, includes varieties,synonyms, and alternate names along with popular and alternate names, foreign and vernacular. There are descriptions of the distinguishing characteristics of rocks and minerals along with the traditional scientific explanations. Locations of the stones and minerals of course and the basics,coming from a great variety of dimensions.
If there is a tear in the fabric of this book...it is merely that they have left out the healing properties which I expected, as science has yet to catch up with the mysterious, doesn't it? Even a history of the first place the stone was mined or found may br found in this text.
A few books you may want next to your field guides are these...if you are into crystal healing, earths polarities, etc. The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall, Crystal Medicine by Marguerite Elsbeth, and Love is in the Earth - A kaleidoscope of Crystals by Melody.
Two (of the greatest) other guides I have on my shelves are another small easy traveller Gemstones of the World by Walter Schumann, and (large, coffee-table book, sized) Smithstonian Rock and Gem (the Definative guide to rocks minerals gems and fossils)my favorite.
One warning on the paperback guide of this reviews Peterson field Guide...if they have a hardback, get that because a couple of pages came out on my first examination of the guide...not well bound. So that if I had been looking at it out-doors on a windy day atop some volcano...I may have lost those pages, if you get my drift. Still definatly worth having, for a great reference, and very informative, & giving one a gift of knowledge, some which you may not find elsewhere.
