Customer Reviews:
A road guide with alot of detail........2007-10-09
This is a large easy to read road atlas. It replaced an atlas that was 10 years old and is laid out very well.
Not Easy to Handle.......2007-09-29
Although the atlas is large scale as promised, it is bulky and too much like a book to use in the car. It has a glued binding instead of the familiar spiral binding. That makes it nearly impossible to use in the car. Also the states are divided awkwardly and difficult to reconcile moving from one page to other half of the state on another page. Cities at the division are not repeated on the next map, so you need to find highways or follow guide marks to make the transition. It is not a good visual stimulus to follow. I put the atlas on a book shelf and bought another spiral bound atlas which is much more car friendly to use on trips.
Great Atlas.......2007-09-17
This road atlas is BIG and easy to read. And due to the large size, each page has a lot of detail. Easy on eyes!
Not a good binding for an atlas.......2007-08-21
I can certainly appreciate that this atlas is ideal for those whose eyes have issues with the small print of the standard type atlases. However, a big drawback for me is the binding of this atlas.
I have found similarly bound atlases to split along the spine quite easily. Spiral binding, or even staple binding, are better choices. Especially for those of us who like the ability of opening an atlas to lay flat.
Atlas for those who don't see real good. .......2007-08-10
Needing an atlas for a friend with failing sight I got this one. The only thing about it we would change is to make it with a spiral binding so it would lay flat. I was real surprised to not be able to find one in Amazon I saw one in a little old gas station at Sam Back Church, WV. Would have gotten it then but he was with me and I wanted to surprise him. This is a good atlas for those who need large print or are just sick and tired of squinting to see those darn little maps!

Book Description
Designed to be the essential reference works for all readers and students, these volumes present the most thorough analysis possible of Tolkien's work within the important context of his life.
The Reader's Guide includes brief but comprehensive alphabetical entries on a wide range of topics, including a who's who of important persons, a guide to places and institutions, details concerning Tolkien's source material, information about the political and social upheavals through which the author lived, the importance of his social circle, his service as an infantryman in World War I -- even information on the critical reaction to his work and the "Tolkien cult."
The Chronology details the parallel evolutions of Tolkien's works and his academic and personal life in minute detail. Spanning the entirety of his long life including nearly sixty years of active labor on his Middle-earth creations, and drawing on such contemporary sources as school records, war service files, biographies, correspondence, the letters of his close friend C. S. Lewis, and the diaries of W. H. Lewis, this book will be an invaluable resource for those who wish to gain a complete understanding of Tolkien's status as a giant of twentieth-century literature.
Customer Reviews:
A Magnificent Work of Scholarship.......2007-03-05
This is an enormous work and a stupendous achievement. Christina Scull and her husband Wayne G. Hammond have created, in two large volumes, an indispensable compendium for students of JRR Tolkien. Although the two volumes can be obtained separately, I recommend that both be purchased, preferably at the same time, so that you can turn from one to the other as your studies lead you down one fascinating avenue to countless others.
The Chronology Volume is an amazing achievement. JRR Tolkien's entire life is chronicled, many times day by day, so that we know what classes he taught, lectures he gave, conferences he attended, and guests he invited for dinner throughout a long, active life. This may seem to be inconsequential minutiae, but all of it is important in revealing the personality and character of the author and the many sources from which his own writings sprang. Historians and sociologists will also find this volume extremely useful since it reveals one man's daily life through three quarters of the twentieth century.
Equally as impressive is Volume 2, the Reader's Guide. Here Scull and Hammond have provided a multiplicity of information on every bit of extant writing by Tolkien, other authors and thinkers with whom he conversed or otherwise communicated, and so much else that it is impossible to enumerate it all. Scholars studying other writers besides Tolkien will do well to consult this volume, since he had contact with so many of them.
As a matter of full disclosure I should reveal that I met Christina Scull some years ago in London, and I have maintained a friendship with her and with Wayne ever since. I am honored that an article I wrote for the Tolkien journal "Beyond Bree" has been referenced in this Reader's Guide. But I hasten to assure you that I would be just as impressed with this work and would recommend itjust as highly even if these connections did not exist.
Incomparable Reference Work on an Incomparable Author.......2007-02-26
Scull and Hammond's "The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide" is an unparalleled reference work about Tolkien as author. The "Chronology" volume examines his life in extraordinary detail, often day-by-day. It draws heavily from Tolkien's letters. The Reader's Guide" volume discusses in equal detail the persons, institutions, and literary works that influenced Tolkien's great cration. Published in a boxed, two-volume set of excellent physical quality, Scull and Hammond's "The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide" would be a handsome addition to any library, and a fountain of sparkling interest to any serious Tolkien student.
Absolutely indispensable - Hammond and Scull have done it again!.......2007-01-12
In the Preface to their long-awaited J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide, Hammond and Scull write that the book "has been designed to serve as a reference of (at least) first resort", but I would daresay that in a great many cases, theirs will be not only the first but the *only* reference work needed. It's *that* exhaustive!
The first volume is mainly a chronology of Tolkien's life, with several satellite chapters detailing his published works, poems, art, a series of Tolkien's family trees, etc. To say that the chronology is detailed would be a considerable understatement. It's really an almost daily accounting of the events of Tolkien's life: essentially an 800-page biography of dates. Staggering!
The second volume, the Reader's Guide, is even larger at well over 1000 pages. This volume, meant to compliment the chronology (and vice versa) provides alphabetized entries for just about every person, place, and literary idea of importance to Tolkien studies. Many of these are in quite astonishing detail, and even the short ones are extremely valuable little gems. For example, in the entry for Jennie Grove, Hammond and Scull provide the basic facts, of course -- but they also point out where to find a photograph of her as well as a portrait of her drawn by Tolkien. These are fantastic kernels of information, and nowhere else are so many collected together in one place. Not only that, but the list of unpublished and archival sources Hammond and Scull consulted is very impressive indeed! Many details represented here have never been brought to light before.
Another excellent feature of the set is the common index; that is, a single index at the back of both volumes covers references *in* both volumes. This makes cross-referencing between the Reader's Guide and Chronology a snap. Both volumes also have extremely thorough bibliographies.
The price tag for the two-volume set is high, yes, but it is well worth it. NB: I'm speaking of the U.S. edition published by Houghton Mifflin *only*; I have not seen the British edition published by HarperCollins (however, I can say that I've been consistently disappointed by the production quality of most British books -- including HarperCollins' otherwise excellent extended edition of "Smith of Wootton Major" (ed. Verlyn Flieger). The books are sturdy and well made, bound in cloth, with sewn binding. The slipcase, also, is attractive, sturdy, and cloth-bound and will help to protect the books over time. The pages are a pleasant cream, with a nicely proportioned and very readable font, and with appropriate margins. The pages had to be a little thin to accommodate so many, but there is only minimal bleed-through.
The two volumes are a little unwieldy to read from -- but given their size, how could they not be? And reading them cover to cover will take a long time (perhaps all the way until John Rateliff's History of the Hobbit is published next November ;), but it's something I've been looking forward to for a long time now.
The most significant addition in Tolkien scholarship.......2007-01-06
The long delay was well worth the wait: the depth and detail of the work are astounding. I daresay the two volume work is exhaustive, but I have been hardpressed to find any topic or date of significance that is not addressed.
The chronology may seem overwhelming for the reader without an agenda. Tolkien's letter collection edited by Humprey Carpenter is a great resource for cross referencing. Even if you aren't interested in what day Tolkien had lunch with a comittee at Leeds, don't ignore the chronology! The bibliography towards the rear is well worth the big bucks--plenty of bread crumbs to helpful sources.
The reader's guide is excellent and ranges from Tolkien's work to his life. Hammond and Skull are very good about pulling information from primary sources. Even more so, they do well at avoiding speculation on more subjective matters, and limit their own interpretation to those primary sources (though I am sure it is valuable).
This is type of book that should occupy the reference area of every college library. The companion is certainly a scholarly work, and is the best reference material on Tolkien to date. It is also, however, valuable to readers who are equally fascinated with Tolkien as they are with his creations.
Well, it is finally out.......2007-01-04
After long wait and anticipation, the Companion and Guide Box Set is out.
I reviewed the two volumes separately. I think that those books are the most important Tolkien's scholarship books since H.o.M.E. Vol. 12.
Is J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide suitable for all? the answer is no. vol. 2 will be more appealing for the "average Tolkien enthusiastic" and Vol.1 will be of much interest and importance for serious Tolkien scholar.
The box set is very impressive and convenient, But make sure that you want both books before buying it.
Book Description
Barry Lopez asked 45 poets and writers to define terms that describe America’s land and water forms — phrases like flatiron, bayou, monadnock, kiss tank, meander bar, and everglade. The result is a major enterprise comprising over 850 descriptions, 100 line drawings, and 70 quotations from works by Willa Cather, Truman Capote, John Updike, Cormac McCarthy, and others. Carefully researched and exquisitely written by talents such as Barbara Kingsolver, Lan Samantha Chang, Robert Hass, Terry Tempest Williams, Jon Krakauer, Gretel Ehrlich, Luis Alberto Urrea, Antonya Nelson, Charles Frazier, Linda Hogan, and Bill McKibben, Home Ground is a striking composite portrait of the landscape. At the heart of this expansive work is a community of writers in service to their country, emphasizing a language that suggests the vastness and mystery that lie beyond our everyday words.
Customer Reviews:
Home Ground.......2007-07-17
Everything Barry Lopez touches is guaranteed quality reading. "Home Ground" a wonderful reference for understanding various geographical/landscape features. Pulling the reference to same from literature onto the same page as the definition is a brilliant idea. I enjoy opening it and reading it at random and also referring to it to refresh myself on terms.
A Beautiful Book.......2007-05-23
If you have a passion for the land, for the language, for fine writing, for earth's mysteries, and for peculiarities of places; and especially if you like books that are simply well-wrought objects, this is a truly beautiful volume. Trust to accident, and crack it open anywhere - you will be enlightened about some little place or feature you likely never knew existed. A true treasure.
Home Ground.......2007-04-04
The format of this interesting exploration of the landscape lends itself to those occasional free moments when one wants a connection with something of worth. Here is a wonderful blending of history, language and the land. Home Ground deserves a permanent place on the coffee table.
Nature Lover from Portola Valley loves Home Ground.......2007-01-23
I'd recommend this book to anyone who reads widely and loves to discover the derivation of geographical terms pertainig to nature. What is unique about this book is the input from 45 well known writers to define unique American landscape terms. I ordered 3 copies for all my family located in the Pacific Northwest and they agree that this book is a great resource.
Landscapes and Language.......2007-01-12
The book defines (with illustrations) terms used to describe land features, such as barranca, grand bois, quaking bog. It is primarily a book to dip into for fun or to consult as a reference. If you like descriptive terms (e.g., meander scar) or puzzling friends with new words, you will like this book.

When MapQuest is not available..........2007-09-14
...there's Thomas Guide! I finally got tired of my son calling me from his cell phone while in traffic, totally lost and wanting me to help him find his way back on coarse. I would have to stop what I'm doing, MapQuest where he was suppose to be and figure out where he was. Of coarse, he was a moving target, so his exact location was constantly changing... making it difficult to guide him anywhere. I checked out GPS's but they were quite costly and I wasn't sure if there was a monthly fee involved for using them. Then I got smart and ordered him his own Thomas Guide and viola! Problem solved!!! And at a real reasonable price!
Thomas Guide, always there when you need it...
great purchase.......2007-06-27
timing delivery, package was in ship shape condition. i'd highly recommend this seller and product.

Everyone who lives here has one in their car for a very good reason.
Easy to read.......2007-04-11
Los Angeles and Orange County, California have some of the most congested and hard to navigate streets anywhere we have traveled. With Thomas Guide, the drive is easy. It is up-to-date, easy-to-read, and a must-have for travelers.
Too annoyingly large and detailed for basic navigation.......2007-03-12
This is such a huge book, it is really difficult to use for basic navigation to get around the area. You have to flip back and forth betweeen the overview map and the detailed one, and just has a lot more detail than I want for most purposes. I will have to buy another map that is easier to use.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Missing many roads.......2007-10-04
I was so happy to find an Atlas with the features I've been looking for so I bought two of them, one for each vehicle.
The book size is nice, it fits perfectly underneath my seats. No more Atlas with ruined covers from being stuck between the seat and the console!
Speaking of the cover, this version has a cover made from heavier stock thus can take a bit of a beating.
The spiral-bound books are a necessity in my opinion. I don't know why there are still Road Atlas's being released that aren't spiral-bound! It's so nice to have the book opened flat without having to crease pages.
The only Con I found with this book is really the most important function of a book - the content. I expected that many of the smaller roads would be unable to fit in the smaller size however several recent trips have left me extremely frustrated when even state highways and large secondary routes were missing. There are also many towns missing, some of them larger towns with reasonably sized junctions.
I love the features (size, spiral-bound, cover) but without the content these features are pointless. I have two brand new copies if anyone needs an Atlas showing nothing but Interstates!
Release this book with better content in the next publish and it gets 5 stars. IMO, until then, put your money elsewhere.
Rand Mcnally.......2007-09-21
This book is much more than an atlasRand McNally 2007 Road Atlas: United States-Large Scale (Rand Mcnally Large Scale Road Atlas USA)
Too Small!.......2007-04-14
I think they should substitute "Small" for "Midsize" in the description of this item. I just returned it because it was too small. Entire states are on one letter-size page and only major roads are shown. I bought it because the Large Scale Atlas is not available in spiral bound except for the one with the Travel Guide which makes it too big and heavy. I have now ordered the Travel Guide version and intend to tear out the Travel Guide section.
Great Atlas in a Manageable Package.......2007-04-11
Bought this Atlas for my fathers birthday. He had a pitiful atlas in his car that he'd received free, but he liked the size. I found this one in the size he liked. It's more manageable with the ring binder and in addition to great city maps it has all kinds of additional information including things to see and do. He LOVES it and claimed it as his favorite gift this year.
Fantastic....Simply a must have.......2007-03-08
I hae used the previous edition to make my cross country roadtrip a success, and now I am using to plan my next trip across america, very user friendly, however it would be better to be spiral bound to keep it open to the page.
Book Description
Surveys find that over 80 percent of Americans agree with the goals of the environmental movement. Sadly, most Americans admit to doing little more than basic recycling when it comes to acting on that disposition. What is the reason for this great divide between environmental sentiment in this country and individual actions? Author and environmental consultant Crissy Trask seeks to answer this question-and solve the disparity-with a new book that makes it easy to be an environmentalist, no matter how busy or hectic your lifestyle. This is a day to day guide with simple, practical suggestions that anyone can put into action, like:

Good Intro to Green Living.......2007-08-11
This book is smaller than many, which makes it pallatable to those who might want to dip their toe into the eco-pool. It has straightforward language, resource pages, short chapters and simple (occasionally humorous) illustrations.
The easy method of tracking actions that you can take gives you a sense of satisfaction as you check through what you are already doing, and what you can consider adding to your daily/weekly/monthly routines. Throughout certain areas of the chapters, there are three boxes next to some action items. The box farthest to the right signifies that this is an action that you would like to try, target or experiment with. Checking the middle box signifies that you are in the process of working on implementing it in your lifestyle. The left most and final box allows you to rate your success with that action on a scale of 1 to 5. For those of us who like lists and to see what we're doing, filling up this book with checks and numbers gives a sense that I can see that I'm making a difference.
Great gift for a hard to shop for person who has everything...

Green is good.......2007-07-20
Excellent book on how to become more environmentally and health conscious while saving money at the same time.
really cool book.......2007-01-06
this book is a fun read. it is very concise and well organized, so it makes for a good coffee table item.
Well, the info is good, but widely available without this book.......2006-11-03
If you need to have almost all the ideas for ways YOU can reduce your ecological damage of your lifestyle all in one easy to read place -- or know someone who you think is open to being greener but unaware of all the big and little changes one can fairly easily make, this might be a book for you.
If you've been paying attention to ecological, green, and sustainability issues for years there's not much point in this book. All the info in it is widely available on the 'net and other sources free.

Very Durable Atlas.......2007-08-21
I purchased this atlas just prior to taking a cross country motorcycle trip. My old atlas had been falling apart over the last few years, so I wanted something that would be durable. And durable, I found! Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if I never again have to purchase an atlas. The pages are laminated, making them virtually indestructable. Since my atlas is used almost exclusively outdoors while on motorcycle trips, this was a BIG positive.
There is no question that the item is bulky. But if I can make room for it in my saddlebags which have VERY limited capacity, then you can trust that it is a worthwhile travel accompaniment.
Item NOT as described.......2007-05-18
The item I ordered was a LARGE SCALE Deluxe 2007 Rand McNally Motor Carrier's Road Atlas in the advertisement AND the description. The photo of the described item was the WRONG photo, but that was not discovered until AFTER mt order was shipped. Amazon did not have the described item - they do not carry it, and agreed that it was false advertising. They said they would send the CORRECT item when we talked about the issue on the phone, and that I could send the defective item back AFTER I have received the CORRECT item. Less than 24 hours, they sent me an email to tell me that they can NOT fulfill my request. I am VERY displeased, because I now have TWO copies of this same atlas. I notice that they have now removed LARGE SCALE from the item title AND advertisement, but it still does not solve my problem. I am stuck with an atlas that is useless....two of them, as a matter of fact...one with a spiral binder and one without the binder. These atlases are sold at truck stops in Texas for less than $20.00 plus tax. Will pick one up on the road.
And now I am to RATE this product...with choices being 1 to 5 stars...and I can't give it a ZERO star, because it is not an option.
Not A Large Scale .......2007-04-27
Amazon needs to change the title to regular scale not large scale other than that the map is great. The large scale cover is orange and clearly states large scale on it.
Russell.......2007-03-10
I ordered this atlas because of the title Large Scale, it is however not the large scale version. Returned to Amazon.
2007 Rand McNalley Deluxe Motor Carriers Road Atlas.......2007-03-09
I was disappointed that the atlas was NOT a Large Scale edition like the title said. I accepted it because I needed it right away and couldn't wait to return it and get another one. Other than the Large Scale issue, the atlas is exactly what I expected and was new.

Book Description
This is a comprehensive survey of the field of political geography, but it goes far beyond traditional topics. No other book of its kind covers topics such as: anomalous political units, special purpose districts, indigenous peoples, outlaws and merchants of death, Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, to name a few. It is tightly packed with facts, ideas, suggestions, anecdotes and illustrations.

Take it from a student of Fahrer..........2007-01-17
I attend Georgia College and State University and my Political Geography teacher just so happens to be Dr. Chuck Fahrer, author of this book. Take it from me, You have never met a man with such a passion for Geography! If other teachers use his work as an appriopriate learning tool they should get a lot out of it. Its very well put together and is extremely easy to comprehend. If Geography is your cup of tea, then you need to sit down with Dr. Fahrer's text and enlighten yourself!
Interesting book.......2005-10-28
It is quite interesting and covers a large number of areas. It expanded my knowledge. Also, buying it used is very inexpensive.
Political Geography.......2002-12-19
If you are looking for a solid text book in the field of Political Geography, Mr. Glassner book is the one for you. Easy to read and well organized, a novice will get a lot out of this book. I would also recommend this book for those in the fields of Political Science, Economics and History for it lays out the fundamentals, of a significant school of thought, in 18th and 19th C Europe early state-relations. But, if you already understand the basics of Political Geography and are looking to expand your understanding of the origin, its under lying philosophy or the actors who developed and played a substantial role in the development of this subject -- save your money. For the serious students of Political Geography there are a couple of chapters that may be of interest to you but, only a few and it's not worth the money.
But what I truly believe is the best part of the book is the reference section at the end of each chapter. There is a wealth of information in the reference section for the student of Political Geography, which can prove to be invaluable when doing research.
Book Description
This book is designed to serve as an introduction to the fascinating world of maps. It explains how to use maps to obtain information about a wide variety of topics. Throughout the book, maps are viewed in a broad framework. Thus, the discussion includes mental maps, aerial photographs, remotely sensed images, computer-assisted cartography, and geographical information systems, in addition to traditional printed maps. The writing style is neither formalistic nor casual, with an emphasis on clarity of explanation. The discussions assume that the reader has no specific prior knowledge of the topic, so that even novice map users can understand and use the information and techniques presented.

Excellent course textbook.......2003-03-24
I received a copy of this book from the publisher when I was teaching a university course on cartography. The textbook for the semester had already been selected, so I used this book originally as a second resource while preparing lectures. By the end of the semester, I found myself using this book as the primary source for topics and explanations and suggested it be used in future semesters.
This book explains concepts such as projections and coordinate systems in ways that are easy to understand, particularly for new students. The explanations are thorough without bogging down in details. The figures are large, many take up a full page. They are helpful, relevant, and excellently reproduced. The chapters on terrain representation, contours, and topographic features are exceptionally good (there are almost 40 examples of terrain representation) The remote sensing and GIS chapters are brief and introductory, but those are topics best left for other books.
I was a little skeptical when I first saw this book, since it appeared to be a somewhat thin, and we were using Robinson's book, which is basically a standard. But, I would recommend this to any map student, teacher, or user. It packs a lot of information in its pages. I still use it as a reference (...).
Great Help.......2001-03-22
If I were stuck on a deserted Island like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, and I could only have one book, it would be this one. It would help me to get off the island and determine my global positioning! Lots of help.
A Cartographer's View of the World.......2000-10-02
When you've been working in a field for 30 years it's really difficult to drag yourself backwards and review data you already know, so when I signed up for a GPS (Global Positioning Sattelite) software course I looked at "Map Use & Analysis" by John Campbell as something I could just skip over, but since it was required reading I finally got it out. I was really pleased with the depth of material and the extremely clear explanations of all those mystifying cartography words. Anyone who has no idea about mapping or is a begining student will be able to use this book. The format is excellent with terms higligted and the index and dictionary are well coordinated. I feel that this book is such an excellent reference that I am buying a copy for myself. The only negative thing I have to say is that the illustrations, which are plentiful seem to wander several pages ahead of text, but they are carefully numbered and correspond exactly to the descriptions. Well done! Les L. Johnson
