Book Description
This book provides a professional text for undergraduate and graduate agricultural and biological engineering students interested in soil and water conservation in rural and urban areas. Subject matter includes all the engineering phases of soil and urban areas. Subject matter includes all the engineering phases of soil and water conservation for a one or two semester course. The authors assume that the student has a basic knowledge of calculus, surveying, mechanics, hydraulics, soils, and computers. The analytical approach is emphasized and is supplemented by sufficient field data to illustrate practical applications. The text emphasizes engineering principles in the areas of erosion, drainage, irrigation, and water resources. Tables, charts, and diagrams have been included to provide practicing engineers with readily usable information as well. Many examples and problems are included to emphasize the design principles and to facilitate an understanding of the subject matter. Computer models and software program sources have been described where applicable in the text as well as access to some computer programs and models. In many instances, students will find using a spreadsheet advantageous for reviewing example problems and solving homework problems.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, but needs more information.......2000-06-08
This book is a good reference for those who works on erosion and sediment control. Needs more information concerning the type of construction necessary for erosion control, because this book touches this subject faintly. I rate it 4 stars because all other information is covered extensively and clear. My interest in this book was for erosion control, but when I tried to look for the information, I was dissapointed. But comparing this book to other similar references, this is the best you can ever find.

In Situ Remediation Engineering
ASIN: 1566702828 |
Book Description
Building on the success of bioremediation and phytoremediation technologies, Natural and Enhanced Remediation Systems explores remediation techniques that use the beneficial effects provided by Mother Nature. Written by a leader in the industry, the book provides state-of-the-art information on natural and enhanced remediation techniques such as monitored natural attenuation, in situ reactive zones, bio-augmentation, in situ chemical oxidation, phytoremediation, constructed wetlands, and engineered phyto-covers. It contrasts the new paradigms in remediation with the conventional remedies of the past two decades. It addresses theoretical and design aspects and includes case studies that illustrate implementation and performance details. The appendixes contain substantial information and data usually found scattered in many different books and research papers, making Natural and Enhanced Remediation Systems a comprehensive resource on cutting-edge remediation technologies.

Book Description
This book deals with the role of plants in combating desertification. Desertification - the degradation of soils in drylands - is a phenomenon occurring in scores of countries around the globe. The number of people (in semiarid regions) affected by the steady decline in the productivity of their lands is in the hundred millions.
This work provides the reader with the experience of scientists from 30 countries and international institutions around the globe, working in cold and warm dry regions to bring plant-based solutions to one of the most severe problems of our times. The measures required to halt or reverse the process of desertification fall into many categories - policy, institutional, sociological/anthropological, and technical.

Book Description
The new edition meets the needs of today's ecologically- and environmentally-oriented students, emphasizing the ecological aspects of forest soils.
* Includes elements from Dr. Binkley's 1986 Wiley book, Forest Nutrition Management.
* Reflects the change in emphasis from production forestry to ecology and environmental concerns.
* Unites two strong publishing areas--forestry and soil science.
Book Description
Follow the widowed Margaret Ralston Kennedy in this second book of the Trail of Thread series, as she travels with eight of her thirteen children from Ohio to the Territory of Kansas in 1855. Told through her letters, Thimble of Soil describes the prevalent hardships and infrequent joys experienced by the hardy pioneer women of Kansas, who struggled to protect their families from terrorists raids while building new homes and new lives on the vast unbroken prairie. Watch for the quilt patterns mentioned in the letters.
Customer Reviews:
Thimble of Soil A woman's quest for land.......2000-04-17
What an inspiring book. The facts and history of our country are extraordinary. I could have never lived as Margaret lived, what a strong woman. She was also a quilter, which I find important, since I am also! It was inspiring to read in a diary format. It seemed so real.

Book Description
Why do some contaminants remain in soils indefinitely? How much of a threat do they pose to human health or the environment? The need for effective and economic site decontamination arises daily. Geoenvironmental Engineering: Contaminated Soils, Pollutant Fate, and Mitigation discusses why soils remain contaminated, focusing on the development of the factors, properties, characteristics, and parameters of soils and individual contaminants. Subjects covered include the basic properties of soils affecting accumulation of contaminants, long-term retention of contaminants and their fate, including the development of intermediate products. The author emphasizes the factors, interactions, and mechanisms important in the bonding and partitioning process. He provides the groundwork for determining the fate of pollutants in soils and sediments and their mitigation. Geoenvironmental Engineering: Contaminated Soils, Pollutant Fate, and Mitigation focuses on why soils and sediments remain contaminated, not how they became contaminated in the first place. You will understand why specific contaminants remain in soils and sediments, how much of a threat they pose to human health and the environment, and what steps to take for mitigation. With this information you can determine the extent of the contamination of soils and sediments, how long they will remain a threat, and what methods to use for their remediation.

Forest Fires: Behavior and Ecological Effects

Book Description
A comprehensive exploration of the effects of firesâin forests and other environmentsâon soils, watersheds, vegetation, air and cultural resources.
Book Description
From the earliest days of the Church, seekers have gone to the desert and found-in the barren terrain-a richer relationship with God. Following in this tradition, Renée Miller, an Episcopal priest who divides her time between the Arizona desert and Memphis, Tennessee, makes connections between the physical landscape of the desert and the landscape of the soul. Using the rhythm of the natural world as a common thread, Fertile Soil in a Barren Land evokes images of the desert and links them to the spiritual practices of the ancient desert fathers and mothers.
For those whose journeys take them to the desert-and those who live far away from it-Fertile Soil in a Barren Land offers ways to find meaning and richness in their lives.
