Book Description

An examination of both theoretical and practical approaches to the geochemistry of natural waters with a more tightly focused emphasis on fresh-water environments. The third edition focuses more on environmental issues than the previous edition, reflecting the importance on environmental geochemistry as a result of increased environmental awareness and regulatory requirements. Prepares readers to interpret the probable cause of a particular water composition and to predict the probable water chemistry in those situations where data do not exist.

1 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters.......2004-06-17

I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters. I found this to be a very poor text to use. The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving. I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry. I would not recommend use of this text.

1 out of 5 stars Needs Work.......2001-11-09

This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater. Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times. I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts.......2001-01-18

Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars Esencial para los geologos.......2000-10-18

Libro muy sencillo de leer y sus ejemplos son muy didacticos

1 out of 5 stars This book overcomplicates even the simplest of topics........1998-10-29

This book fails to explain topics in a manner suitable for beginners in this field. I recomend choosing any other book over this one.

      Book Description

The application of surface geochemical methods to finding petroleum is based on the detection of hydrocarbons in the soil that have leaked from a petroleum reservoir at depth. While the seal over the deposit was once considered impermeable, surface geochemistry data now show that such leakage is a common occurrence. Despite its simplicity and low costs, surface geochemistry remains controversial because, until now, there was no objective and in-depth treatment of the various methods of surface geochemistry for oil exploration. Written by a successful oil finder, this practical guide: * surveys a broad array of surface geochemistry techniques, from soil gases to microbiology, and provides clear strategies for applying them to the high-stakes art of petroleum exploration * offers numerous case studies, both successes and failures, to show the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches * examines statistical and spatial variation, surveys and models in surface geochemistry, demonstrating how each analytical tool can be used to optimize accuracy * integrates surface geochemistry data interpretation with data from conventional methods of oil exploration, and considers the economics of surface geochemical approaches * discusses key topics that have been neglected in the literature, such as grid design and the effects of soils. Geologists, geophysicists, geological engineers and exploration managers involved in petroleum exploration will gain valuable insights from this volume. By presenting and evaluating each method of surface geochemistry in a neutral tone, this book enables the reader to select and employ these methods with greater confidence.

The book is well written and covers the subject in depth and effectively. The focus on examples by author makes it a very practical guide in the use of these methods in petroleum exploration. Unlike other articles or books that just touch on the subject this is a practical guide that helps the reader cut through the hype. It is clear the author practices what he writes about and not merely cut and paste examples from other sources.

Volume 5 has several objectives. The first is to present an overview of the composition of surface and ground waters on the continents and the mechanisms that control the compositions. The second is to present summaries of the tools and methodologies used in modern studies of the geochemistry of surface and ground waters. The third is to present information on the role of weathering and soil formation in geochemical cycles: weathering affects the chemistry of the atmosphere through uptake of carbon dioxide and oxygen, and paleosols (preserved soils in the rock record) provide information on the composition of the atmosphere in the geological past.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent .......2006-12-20

This volume of the Treatise on Geochemistry is highly specialized in surface and groundwater. Some of the papers published here are very interesting in order to understand, for example, the appearance of trace elements in river waters or even weathering at low temperatures (which is the range of temperatures that a river have). Sometimes becomes very technical and is needed a high base on geochemistry, but most of the time is a very understandable book full of references that can be checked on-line. I recommend this book for graduate students that will like to pursue high studies on earth and planetary sciences.

          Book Description

Our landscape is constantly changing, but before the dramatic effects of erosion and mass movement take place, more subtle forces work on the rocks, minerals and soils around us. Weathering is the initial process which exposes the top few layers of the Earth to the potential for change. This book provides an introduction to the scientific principles behind mechanical, chemical and biological weathering. Starting with a consideration of the chemical and physical properties of rocks and water, the authors proceed to an accessible explanation of the weathering processes themselves, concluding with a review of weathering rates and intensities, and a survey of the effects of weathering on the landscape. Assuming little background knowledge, the authors develop ideas from first principles to provide a straightforward introduction to weathering for students of geography, geology and earth and environmental science.

            Book Description

Salt and Sediment Dynamics presents a thorough treatment of salt and sediment interactions and the implications of such interactions for sub-salt exploration. The book emphasizes and utilizes recent discoveries on many aspects of salt and sediment interactions, provides the theoretical framework for interpreting the increasing amount of available data on salt and sediments, and develops a self-consistent dynamical evolution model of salt structures and their interaction with surrounding sediments. The model developed in the text consists of an evolving salt structure that influences sediment motion with self-consistent evolution of sediments and salt shape. The resulting stress and strain in the sediments and the thermal focusing effects of the salt are evaluated. The salt and sediments in the model are consistent with observed geometries, a result of having freely adjustable, observation-controlled model parameters. In addition, the book describes case histories in a variety of geological settings, thus explaining aspects of the genesis and development of salt structures, of their impact on sedimentary structural evolution, and of the impact of sediments on salt masses. The techniques developed by the authors expand the current state of knowledge regarding the evolution and dynamics of salt structures and increase the potential for effective sub-salt hydrocarbon exploration.

              Book Description

This book is dedicated to basic physical principles of the propagation of
acoustic and elastic waves. It consists of two volumes. The first volume
includes 8 chapters and extended Appendices explaining mathematical aspects
of discussed problems. The first chapter is devoted to Newton's laws, which,
along with Hooke's law, govern the behavior of acoustic and elastic waves.
Basic concepts of mechanics are used in deriving equations which describe
wave phenomena. The second and third chapters deal with free and forced
vibrations as well as wave propagation in one dimension along the system of
elementary masses and springs which emulates the simplest elastic medium.
In addition, shear waves propagation along a finite and infinite
              string are discussed.

In chapter 4 the system of equations describing compressional waves is derived.
The concepts of the density of the energy carried by waves, the energy flux, and
the Poynting vector are introduced. Chapter 5 is dedicated to propagation of
spherical, cylindrical, and plane waves in homogeneous media, both in time and
frequency domains. Chapter 6 deals with interference and diffraction. The
treatment is based on Helmholtz and Kirchhoff formulae. The detailed discussion
of Fresnel's and Huygens's principles is presented. In Chapter 7 the effects of interference of waves with close wave numbers and frequencies are considered. Concepts such as the wave group, the group velocity, and
the stationary phase important for understanding propagation of dispersive waves are introduced.
The final chapter of the first volume is devoted to the principles of
              geometrical acoustics in inhomogeneous media.
