If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

This abridged audiobook introduces Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo's revolutionary approach to dieting based on the connection between blood type and health. Read by audio pro Polly Adams, D'Adamo's bestseller details how different foods affect specific blood types both positively and negatively. We learn that "pastas made from buckwheat are better tolerated for Type Os," and that type As should eliminate all meat from their diet to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Adams blends an efficient, no-nonsense delivery and warm tones that may remind some of a favorite talk-radio personality. And considering the important subject matter, listeners will appreciate all of these qualities. While some dieters may find the suggestions too progressive--it's recommended that women with a history of breast cancer in their family introduce snails into their diet--this is a beneficial three-hour investment for dieters seeking alternative nutritional plans. 4 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-09-05

I found this book to be a very easy read. It gives very simple straight forward explanations and rationale for the diet and it's theories. It further reads like an instruction manual and very clearly explains what foods are beneficial, neutral, or an avoid. Pretty straight forward, if it's beneficial eat it, if it's an avoid, avoid it. And if it's a neutral it has little significance either way, so you can eat it but don't make it a diet staple.

4 out of 5 stars Great Way to Lose Weight -- Best for Type O.......2007-08-24

I have followed the guidelines in this book loosely for 2 weeks and have lost over 8 pounds. Which is a 20% of the weight I want to lose by December. I am type O which is the best type to be on this diet because it allows for a larger range of foods. Type O's should definately try this diet, and its not hard to follow. The Other blood types should try this as well, but food options are more restricted. So if you have a hard time avoiding certain foods this may not be for you.

1 out of 5 stars Blood Type Diet is No More Than Silly Mumbo-Jumbo.......2007-07-30

In John Robbins new book, "Healthy At 100", he studies the Abkhasians of the Caucasus Mountains, the Vilcabambans of Ecuador and the Hunzans of Pakistan. These are probably the three healthiest populations in the world. None of them prepare special foods for different people of different blood types. Yet they are almost universally healthy and happy.

Weston Price traveled the world back in the 1930s and examined the healthiest tribes of people to be found. None of them prepared different foods for people of different blood types.

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a single scientific study demonstrating that people of different blood types have different nutritional needs.

Blood type diets are nothing more than silly mumbo-jumbo. Why do people embrace this kind of dietary cult? I'm not sure. Maybe because people feel a need to be segmented and divided in some way. This is MY special blood type diet! I eat this and you shouldn't. Maybe people embrace this stuff because it helps rationalize decisions that they have already made.

Simply the best thing I've ever done for my body. If you are tired of dieting why not trade in the foods your body can't process for those it can?

I haven't felt this good since I was a teenager (and that's been a few decades). The website is great also.

3 out of 5 stars EATING RIGHT .......2007-06-27

THIS WAS A VERY EDUCATIONAL BOOK. IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY MY DOCTOR. I THINK THAT THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY OF THE BOOK IS GREATER THAN MANY PEOPLE WOULD ENJOY. IT REQUIRES MORE THAN A SINGLE READING TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS. IT ALSO RECOMMENDS A LOT OF HERBAL REMEDIES OF VARIOUS CONDITIONS WHICH COULD BE A LITTLE COST PROHIBITIVE. THE DIET GUIDE WAS SIMPLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW BUT REQUIRED THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD GRASP OF THE BOOK'S CONCEPTS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHY TO EXCLUDE FOODS FROM YOUR DIET. I ENJOYED THE BOOK AND WILL REREAD MUCH OF IT. I AM ALSO FOLLOWING MANY OF ITS GUIDELINES FOR EATING FOR MY BLOOD TYPE.

The idea that blood type plays a role in health, wellness, and personality wasn't exactly new when Dr. Peter D'Adamo came out with Eat Right 4 Your Type in 1997. The idea had been around for most of the 19th century, and had gained quite a bit of currency in Japan. But it was a startling idea to most Americans, who made the book a bestseller that was translated into more than 40 languages and spawned a similarly successful sequel, Cook Right 4 Your Type.

Now, Dr. D'Adamo--armed with new studies on genetic links between blood types, disease, and behavior--looks at the psychological and medical peculiarities that seem to predominate in one blood type or another. Type O's, for example, have lower than average amounts of a brain chemical called dopamine, leading to poor concentration, hyperactivity, and temper tantrums. A's tend to manufacture too much cortisol, a stress hormone that can lead to hypertension and has even been implicated in Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Type B's and AB's clear nitric oxide out of their systems faster, allowing them to calm down more rapidly than other blood types when stressed.

Dr. D'Adamo offers detailed lifestyle modifications for each type, including exercise programs, long lists of food to either seek out or avoid, and suggested treatment of specific illnesses. Some of this gets pretty arcane, including his recommendation of bladder wrack (a seaweed) for ulcer treatment of Type O's.

A big part of the appeal of this book series is that anyone reading it can become a participant by joining Dr. D'Adamo's blood-type registry at www.dadamo.com. Live Right for Your Type is peppered with testimonials from these registrants, giving the reader a sense that a true transformation in health, appearance, weight, and well-being is just a few diet and lifestyle changes away. --Lou Schuler

2 out of 5 stars Little Difference.......2007-09-05

I have purchased two other books in the series. I found little to be different in this book from the other two. The books tend to repeat themselves a lot. I purchased this book with all good intentions of learning the lifestyle changes and exercise programs that are recommended for my blood-type. I was a little disappointed to find that there was very little additional information provided in this book from the Eat Right For Your Blood Type book. Based on this, I am not going to be purchasing any other books in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Live Right 4 your type and be surprised.......2007-08-23

This book is a bit esoteric for a layman, though I muddled through it and learned an amazing amount of things I had no clue about. I will now move on to the "eat right 4 your type book". The Live Right book hit home repeatedly and explained things I would have liked to have known 60 years ago.

I trust that when I get the Eat Right 4 Your Type book it will be more precise as to exactly what to eat and not eat. I just wish that someday some Doctor would right a book that says we just need to change our diet and never have to exercise!" Not holding my breath on that one.

I recommend this book to those who are looking for that ever elusive answer as to what to do for health. Now I will give the plan a try.

3 out of 5 stars I am conflicted.......2007-08-06

First of all, I am Type O, and D'Adamo recommends I eat plenty of red meat and animal protein. According to D'Adamo, I have plenty of stomach acid to digest it with. Since I have long been interested in alternative medicine and ancient approaches to health and nutrition, I had previously consulted the Ayurveda for dietary advice. I have a pitta dosha, which means I am a firey personality. There is quite a bit of consistency in how D'Adamo characterizes my constitution, compared with the Ayurveda. For example there is agreement that I am a prime candidate for stomach ulcer (and I currently have one). However, the dietary advice for pitta dosha is totally opposite from D'Amato's for Type O. Even though I feel I can eat anything, I understand that I am supposed to AVOID eliciting my stomach acid in the interest of remaining balanced, which means very little protein from animal sources. Now, I'm not well-read in Ayurveda (Read "Eat Your Colors" by Marcia Zimmerman), but you can guess that with my current condition, I am eating mostly vegetable protein. I am not a scientist and neither am I a mystic, but I find this difference fascinating, and worth mentioning in a review.

5 out of 5 stars New and improved.......2007-04-01

The new and improved version of the blood group diet that customizes eating plans to your blood group.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-02-18

This books is an extremely long version of Eat right 4 your type food and baverage list. If has information about ALL blood types which i didn't really care for being that i have only one type. Everything i read about my blood type, i already knew from the food list book. It wasn't very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good, But Room For Improvement.......2007-06-09

My 8.5 year old grandson took twenty minutes to review four children's Bibles. He finally chose this one as the best for reasons similar to those mentioned in other reviews, but suggested two improvements.

First, improve the print. It is harder to read than other children's Bibles that are printed in blue. One he really found easy to read had blue print and green section titles. Two, make the colored pages with special activities easier to find. The more high color pages he found in a Bible the more it moved up on his list. The Bibles he initially chose used a heavier paper.

Only after I pointed out the activity pages (and he found plenty of them) did this Bible become his first choice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bible!.......2007-05-29

The Hands-On Bible is perfect for teaching my 5th/6th graders. I have several "unchurched" kids that are not intimidated by the Bibles and truly enjoy opening God's Word and learning from it. Thank you Group!

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2007-01-18

This bible is great for kids ages 7 and up. The activities it purposes are easy, and help to commit the story to memory. The bible itself is easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this bible for any one intrested in teaching or learning from the bible.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent interpretation of the Word of God.......2007-01-09

Originally, this book was a gift for my grandson by one of his elementary school teachers--ordered on Amazon.com. I started reading the book and could not put it down. Because we live in separate housing, I realized that I wanted this book for my own. Even if you have spiritual interpretation of the scriptures, this book explains the scriptures in layman's terms for today. Try The Hands On Bible for yourself and you will realize the truth that is magnificently displayed. You, as well as, your children will have a clear understanding of so many things that we have been so ignorant of.

Book Description

In her revealing bestseller Call Me Anna, Patty Duke shared her long-kept secret: the talented, Oscar-winning actress who won our hearts on The Patty Duke Show was suffering from a serious-but-treatable-mental illness called manic depression. For nearly twenty years, until she was correctly diagnosed at age thirty-five, she careened between periods of extreme euphoria and debilitating depression, prone to delusions and panic attacks, temper tantrums, spending sprees, and suicide attempts. Now in A Brilliant Madness Patty Duke joins with medical reporter Gloria Hochman to shed light on this powerful, paradoxical, and destructive illness. From what it's like to live with manic-depressive disorder to the latest findings on its most effective treatments, this compassionate and eloquent book provides profound insight into the challenge of mental illness. And though Patty's story, which ends in a newfound happiness with her cherished family, it offers hope for all those who suffer from mood disorders and for the family, friends, and physicians who love and care for them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-10-05

This book is both entertaining and informative with loads of references and resources....I highly recommend it, especially for someone just starting the research into what this desease is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and educational.......2007-07-02

I've always been a big fan of Patty Duke which is what prompted me to purchase the book. I knew a little bit about her illness from the movie "Call Me Anna" that came out in the eighties; however, nothing could've prepared me for the astonishing ways she pulled herself together after falling apart over and over again or for how long she dealt with her disorder until doctors were able to figure out what it was she had and how to treat it. Most importantly, this book teaches scientific information regarding neurotransmitters and mental illness. I can't believe how much I learned from this book while being entertained at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-06-02

This is an excellent book. It is more than Patty Duke's situation, which is very well presented in her own words. There are multiple examples of others experiences. It gave me a much greater understanding of my own experiences. It also helped de-stigmatized the disease for me. The single drawback is the discussion of Lithium; it was written before many of the current medications became available. This in no way detracts from the power of the book. I would, and have, high recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book on Bipolar for the average reader.......2007-03-30

This book is one I recommend to any patient I suspect may have bipolar disorder in the differential. Patty Duke is a most lovable character who pours out her heart in an endearing autobiography. The chapters go back and forth between Patty Duke, telling her story (Which reads like an exciting novel) and a science writer who talks more in depth about bipolar- beautifully written throughout. This book is a must read, as well as a very fun read for anyone who think they may have bipolar or anyone who may love someone who has bipolar. Very inspiring and upbeat. Filled with humanness.

Also don't miss Kay Redfield Jameson's Autobiography An Unquiet Mind

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Book for Families and Bi-Polar sufferers.......2007-01-20

This book gives you a real insight as to what families of bi-polar patients and the patient himself goes though. There is a great deal of information on medications and their effects, what is good, what is not, what works, what doesn't, etc.

The book includes names of organizations where one can turn to along with phone numbers, addresses of the organizations. I bought five books for my family and friends so they might understand this disorder with a broader perspective. My daughter has had manic depressive disorder for 8 years and this book has given us hope.

I think he makes a very good case for reasons not to continue eating a meat-based diet as the effects of a high fat animal diet lead to many of the popular illnesses and diseases we read about today (e.g., diabetes, stroke, heart attack, etc.)

I was not a vegan or vegetarian before reading this book and I know that some reviewers may think there is too much of a vegan agenda, but I would disagree. Plant based diets are a healthy and economical way to live your life. It can be particularly useful if you're trying to lose weight as well as if you are genetically predisposed to certain illnesses by incorporating the new four food groups into your life and possibly preventing or eliminating potential illnesses altogether.

5 out of 5 stars I buy used copies of this book for my unhealthy family.......2005-01-12

I have purchased over a dozen copies of this book for my family and friends, and finally browsed the reviews today and was shocked to see any negative feedback. So for those considering the book, remember the negative reviews were written by meat-lovers that in no way plan to give it up.

I've read at least twenty or so nutrition books and this is my favorite of them all. It's simple to read, easy to understand, and very complete. It encourages a vegeterian diet for the sole purpose of having a healthy life, rather than giving all the statisitics on animal cruelty.

It deconstructs all the myths (i.e. people need tons of protein, and vegetarians do not get enough iron) and gives tons of yummy recipes in addition to informing you of all the nutritional benefits of a plant-based diet.

It reinforces the fact that doctors do not fix you until you are broken. My brother is in med school and I asked him how many nutrition classes he was required to take..... the answer was none. Why not learn how to prevent diseases rather than fix them afterwards? Why eat a meat-based diet, take your cholesterol pill and destroy your liver, when you can avoid eating cholesterol at all? Why eat excessive simple carbohydrates and sugars and rely on an insulin shot every day?

I've bought copies for nearly every member in my family over the past three years, but sadly they don't bother reading it until they are required to take insulin, or they find a lump in their breast, or they find their cholesterol is off the charts. I believe you have a duty to your loved ones to keep your body healthy so you can be here for them as long as possible, and this book can show you how. For more info, look into pcrm.org

Also, my sincerest thank you to Dr. Barnard for caring enough to spend time to teach interested people the proper way to eat.

4 out of 5 stars A piece of the puzzle.......2001-04-10

This is an excellent book. It traces out the nutritional roots of many significant diseases. My wife found it in the library while looking for something else, and now we're on our way to becoming vegetarian.

At times it's a little slow reading and occasionally seems a bit repetitious. However, his work is very well documented and there are extensive footnotes to research done in this area.

For an even more significant piece of the puzzle with regard to the roots of disease check out Henry Wright's "A More Excellent Way". He deals with the spiritual roots of disease, which affect us even more pervasively than the nutritional roots. A wholistic view on life demands that we address each dimension.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it, read it, and do as much as you can to abide by it.......2001-03-08

I gave a copy to my brother, bought one for a friend, I'm reading it myself for the second time, and I just bought 3 more to share.

5 out of 5 stars Very enlightening and well-documented.......2000-11-03

This was a great book at exposing the dangers of eating meat and dairy. Dr. Barnard's more recent books like Foods That Fight Pain are also highly recommended. A less than 10% fat diet is great for those who want to lose weight and keep it off, but for those who just want to switch to a vegan diet without losing weight, you may want to include a little olive oil or nuts. A little more fat also may help if your skin gets dry. The research on dairy products is shocking, you may wonder why most doctors and nutritionists keep ignoring the negative research on dairy. I have been a vegan for a couple of years now and feel better than ever. Just think of all of the varieties of fresh fruits, vegetables, various whole grains, variety of different beans, and different types of nuts available. Soy products are not necessary(I can't remember the last time I ate soy), so don't hesitate to buy this book based on that. Read the book about info regarding vitamin B-12 and vitamin D. Highly recommended.

Book Description

Most of us need to feel that we matter in some way; perhaps this explains the high value placed on titles, corner offices, and even fleeting celebrity. But most of us also need to feel that we are good people. In this luminous yet practical book of spiritual advice, Harold Kushner bridges the gap between these seemingly irreconcilable needs, showing us how even our smallest daily actions can become stepping stones toward integrity.

Drawing on the stories of his own congregants, on literature, current events and, above all, on the Biblical story of Jacob, the worldly trickster who evolves into a man of God --Kushner addresses some of the most persistent dilemmas of the human condition: Why do decent people so often violate their moral standards? How can we pursue justice without giving in to the lure of revenge? How can we turn our relationships with family and friends into genuine sources of meaning? Persuasive and sympathetic, filled with humanity and warmth, Living a Life That Matters is a deeply rewarding book.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughful.......2007-07-06

I found a copy of this thin book in the discount paperback section which I think is OK to say on Amazon since it appears to be no longer available here except through others just as the messages in this book are best understood through our relationships with others! This book threads the story of Jacob throughout, using this, other biblical insights and the Rabbi's experiences as a compassionate listener, to affirm the power and grace of right living; herein there is also a solid debate for forgiveness and citations of methods used for reconciliation.

This book created much meaningful discussion in our book club albeit not the preferred selection; several did not show that evening! I heard these comments from those who did show up; "this makes me think too much" "I don't like all the bible stories" "I like to do my own interpretation." The most revealing comment however I think speaks to why you should read this book and that was from one of the ladies looking almost angry throughout and when asked her opinion she honestly replied "I choose revenge." So read this book to see what you choose then consider how our choices shape the world we live in.

Absolutely wonderful book. Simple to understand and very inspiring!!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in the conclusion, tired of the technique :-(.......2006-08-25

This book began by raising some very interesting questions about "mother love" versus "father love", that is, about the need for a person to experience both unconditional love and earned love. I eagerly bought the book, logically believing these provocative questions would be answered at the end of the book, but IMHO Kushner wimps out. He writes that there really isn't any difference at all, despite the fact that he outlined significant differences earlier in the book.

I won't be buying Kushner's latest book, which was released earlier this month (although I'll probably read parts of it in a bookstore). I find myself growing a bit tired of his technique of profiling one Old Testament character per book. (He's profiled Job, the writer of Ecclesiastes/King Solomon, Jacob/Israel in this book, and Moses in his latest.) Kushner writes really well, and I'd like to see him break out of this mold and deliver some truly original ideas!

5 out of 5 stars Rabbi Kushner is Wonderful: As Usual.......2006-05-09

I became a fan of Rabbi Kushner when I read his book "When Bad Things Happen to Good People". When "Living a Life That Matters" was published, he came to Denver to promote the book at the Tattered Cover Book Store. How could I miss a chance to meet him? I was number 6 in line for his autograph and as thrilled as some groupie getting to meet her favorite rock star.

Rabbi Kushner's works are a joy to read even when he writes of sadness and grief. He doesn't pretend to have answers but his gifts of words and empathy are comforting. He's a genuinely nice person with a wonderful sense of humor.

That's not a book review. That's an author review. Which pretty much sums up the book.

5 out of 5 stars Do The Right Thing.......2006-02-18

Making hard choices gives us personal integrity. And this is pleasing to God as we can see in the story of Jacob wrestling with the angel. I love Rabbi Kushner's interpretation that the angel is not a demon but our own conscience. No amount of money, no success, no fruit of labor is as sweet as making right choices which lead to the lasting (and eternal?) satisfaction that is personal integrity.

Book Description

Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram,* “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl’s fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere.

*pangram: a sentence or phrase that includes all the letters of the alphabet

4 out of 5 stars Alphabetti Spaghetti.......2007-09-01

I recommended Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn to Sarah Salway (The ABCs of Love) and she is loving it so I thought I would mention it to everyone as this wonderful, ingenious book has never become the bestseller it deserves. By shouting about it here I can probably drum up two or three more readers for it.

Big deal you might say, but if they all like it and can get two or three other people to try it and they, in turn, do likewise then by my calculations it will be the most popular book in the world in about three weeks.

The novel is set on the fictional island of Nollop, named after Nevin Nollop, the man who invented the pangram 'the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog'. The statue in his honour displays the sentence proudly but as letters start to crumble and fall off, the inhabitants of the island are forbidden to use them.

As e ch ch pter progresses the text reflects these new l ws which me ns th t the re der is left to fill in the bl nks.

Clever and witty stuff and a book that I am pretty sure will entertain anyone with a love of words and wordplay.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime!.......2007-08-14

This book has something for everyone. Outwardly it is a clever, if quirky story. But you don't have to delve far to find the parable within and the corresponding commentary on both censorship and the struggle against abridgement of personal rights. What a great achievement!

4 out of 5 stars brilliant wordplay; less gripping storyline.......2007-03-13

Mark Dunn's imaginative book is written as a series of letters between characters living on a fictional island and who face a tyrannical, superstitious government that outlaws the use of letters as they fall off a village cenotaph. Dunn's writing under these constraints is really masterful (for example, after "c" has been banished he uses the word "genoerasure" for genocide, and "amigas" for "friends" after "f" and "d" are outlawed), but I didn't find the storyline nearly as compelling. I felt the outcome of the drama was predictable, and there was a sameness to the characters' voices that made them hard to distinguish from one another.

Still, Dunn deserves praise for pulling off the daring and successful feat of writing a novel which, by its end, must be written with barely half of the letters of the alphabet available. -- Judy Gruen, author, "The Women's Daily Irony Supplement."

4 out of 5 stars Strange read.......2007-01-10

This book with its use (dis-use) of the alphabet appeals to people with well-developed senses of humor, perhaps strange senses of humor. I certainly would recommend readers give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most original novels that I have read.......2006-12-08

Ella Minnow Pea is an instant classic. The originality of the plot and the way it is presented makes this book stand out. Though it takes a few pages to figure out what is going on, once you are drawn into it, this book is very hard to put down. It should be required reading for all English Lit and/or Poli Sci high school students.

Note to prospective readers: there is a SPOILER in the review by Betty Burks of TN--don't read her review before reading this book!!

3 out of 5 stars Living in the Labyrinth: A Personal Journey Through the Maze of Alzheiner's.......2007-06-13

This book was well done with frightening information about the dreadful disease of Alzheimer's. Unfortunately, the copyright is 1993 and I would love an update. There are new things that are helping with Alzheimer's every day. Every 72 seconds another person has been diganosed with Alzheimer's (according to Alzheimer's Desease Research)so we need more books like this that are more recent.

5 out of 5 stars Another exploration into ALZ by one who is there.......2002-10-03

This is a magnificent addition to the small but growing oeuvre of those telling it like it is from within the shadow of Alzheimer's. Unlike Kuhn's "Alzheimer's Early Stages" who offers a Prozac to those of us who defy his Polyannish view of a CRS' mental functioning without seeking insights from those who remain lucid and analytical and rational within, despite our infrequent "windows of clarity", McGowan tells it like it is for some of us: warts, fistulae, et al. She does not hold back from her anger, depression and increased libido. [Discretely, I have observed that the female party in an ALZ pairing, whether caregiver or ALZer, seems to be affected by ALZ as if it were a female aphrodasiac, whereas the male is threatened by his partner's increased "horniness." Studies of sexual activities in aging environments seems to confirm this casual observation, which appears psychological rather than physiological, i.e. it seems not related to the physical phenomena of erectile dysfunction, or loss of vaginal lubrication, but rather a soritin reward for coping with the stress of ALZ.

McGowan's struggles with those who demanded that she surrender control over her completed opus are mirrored in our daily lives as our caregivers, facilitators, and M.S.W.'ers "command" that we
that we surrender our remaining identities since these are an obstacle for those who "know what is best for us;" and regard disobedience as defiance by ADHD juveniles.

McGowan's book could have used a considerate and conservative collaborator and/or editor to polish the rough diamond she has put forth, just as DeBaggio's "Losing My Mind" cries out for polishing, which refining Snyder's "Speaking Our Minds" exemplifies. But both McGowan and DeBaggio give us the raw data, from which we we middle stage ALZheimers desperately need so that we are not be alone nor terminally unique.

Interstingly, McGowan justifiably claims credit for instigating an Alzheimer support group, where none existed [there are an abundance of groups and "Idiot's Guides" for caregivers, but these tend, like Alanon, to be pity pots of anger and resentment directed at those of us with middle stage Rapid Onset "Late Onset" diagnoses, who have not yet deteriorated like Iris Murdoch into vocal or literary aphasia although the communicating becomes more difficult as the Ah!HA!s of insight flee much too rapidly. [I do not envison heaven for those who forget that one must recall spelling in order to use a dictionary or word processer!]

Like Strauss' "Speaking to Alzheimers", "Living in the Labyrinth" is an ideal guide of "Do's & Dont's for those who wish to communicate with us, without inflicting their own anger and resentment into us.

A "Must Read" for ALZers, Caregivers, Facilitators, and others who do not have Closed Minds regarding those of us who assure them that there is "A Human Thinking Within" the quickly closing walls of outward communication, acknowledgement, and recognition.

On the other hand, "cursed be those who have eyes and do not see, and ears which do not hear;" [Jeremiah & Ezekiel] vasecors et amens.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2002-09-06

Living in the Labyrinth is one of the first books I read when I began researching Alzheimer's disease. It is a gripping account of Alzheimer's disease from the inside. I found myself reading the whole book in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for those caring for others with AD.......2002-04-27

When I first began my zealous quest to understand the disease of Alzheimer's, I stumbled across this book. To this day, it remains the most influential book I've read for understanding stages 1-5. Written in first person, it provides a soul-revealing glimpse into the maze of AD as one woman shares her quest to deal with the loss of function and depression accompanying this stage of the journey. Years later, I still pick it up occassionally to reconnect.

These are indeed cynical times. But to hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.

Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism--an exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have to be pious or martyred saints (as he explains throughout one chapter), starving ourselves in the name of a cause or staging protests in freezing rain. We can be "good enough" activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can replenish ourselves so that we do not burn out. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.

This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb's writing, research, and integrity are as solid as they come. Soul of a Citizen may well become The Handbook for activism at the turn of the century. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Soul of a Citizen awakens within us the desire and the ability to make our voices heard and our actions count. We can lead lives worthy of our convictions.A book of inspiration and integrity, Soul of a Citizen is an antidote to the twin scourges of modern life-powerlessness and cynicism. In his evocative style. Paul Loeb tells moving tells moving stories of ordinary Americans who have found unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Through their example and Loeb's own wise and powerful lessons, we are compelled to move from passivity to participation. The reward of our action, we learn, is nothing less than a sense of connection and purpose not found in a purely personal life.

2 out of 5 stars A non-academic book for the baby boomer generation.......2007-03-29

As many other reviewers I was asked to read this book as a part of a college course. My wife was recently assigned the reading in her MSW program. I do believe it has some value, but to a specific generation and type of activist. The book rarely (if at all) discusses a model of activism outside of that born from the peace and love movement of the 60-70s. If you are from these eras, by all means this is the book for you. If you are or will soon be a college student you will likely find little to connect with in the book. I suspect that its over use in courses at this time is a result of faculty promoting a book they feel applies to them greatly without thinking of how it applies to younger generations.

2 out of 5 stars duh!.......2006-12-05

I read this book for a college class on Social Work, and although Loeb tells many meaningful and powerful stories, this is the same text I have heard before. If you read the first and last paragraph of each chapter you basically get the point. It's an easy read, and some may find it powerful, but I just found it repetitive and over-told.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you believe in service to others.......2006-10-21

Paul is an outstanding voice in our world. Fantastic book helping bring hope to a difficult time for those of us who aspire to service. It is a challenge to keep engaged in service and Paul does provide hope. I also appreciate his newsletter and recommend it to those who appreciate his work. Great insights.

5 out of 5 stars Every citizen must read.......2006-08-11

I read Soul of a citizen which inspired me to action. I am now a volunteer activist in my neighbourhood and have formed a group of concerned citizens to negotiate and participate in our city's development plan. We have made an impact in the corporation and even had a few small successes along the way.

1 out of 5 stars tired of it.......2006-07-09

Must we indulge yet another collection of tripe in the guise of self-help? Didn't we get this sort of nonsense out of our systems a long time ago?

If you are the type who hangs around in the self-help section of Borders looking for something you haven't yet read, hoping the nice-looking man ordering the latte isn't as bad as your ex-husband, well, sure, pick this up. You can read it a few hours later after you've snuck that man past your sleeping children's doors and out to his car, and feel good about yourself and how wonderful a person you are for reading something like this.

For the rest of us that live with a real sense of morality, well, we know books like this are just excuses - a mechanism by which the anointed democrat leftists sanctify themselves. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I wrote this review. If it offended you, you're beyond help. If it rang true, you already know you don't want to get anywhere near this book.
