Book Description
This text covers the range of subjects necessary for the understanding of modern infrared-imaging systems at a level appropriate for seniors or first-year graduate students in physics or electrical engineering. The first six chapters focus on fundamental background issues of radiation detection, beginning with the basics of geometrical optics and finishing with a discussion of the figures of merit used for describing the signal-to-noise performance of a detector system. Other topics include radiometry and flux-transfer issues, basic radiation-detector mechanisms, and random-process mathematics.
The presentation then moves on to specific detector technologies and the fundamental mechanisms of detection, paying special attention to responsivity and noise performance. Devices discussed include photovoltaic detectors, photoconductive detectors, thermal detectors, Schottky-barrier diodes, and bandgap-engineered photodetectors via multiple quantum wells and superlattices.
The book concludes with a close look at infrared detection systems and related issues. In the discussion of infrared search systems, the range equation is developed in terms of the optical and detector parameters of the system. A separate chapter is devoted to modulation transfer function, a spatial-frequency-domain description of image quality. The final chapter describes the design equations for thermal-imager systems in terms of noise-equivalent temperature difference and minimum resolvable temperature.
Supported and clarified by 470 illustrations and accompanied by an extensive glossary of the nomenclature, this is an excellent text for graduate and senior level courses in radiometry and infrared detectors. It is also a valuable reference for practicing engineers involved in the use, design, analysis, and testing of infrared detector-based systems.
Infrared Detectors and Systems is a complete, accessible, and timely exposition of a technology whose applications are increasingly important and widespread. Based on courses presented by two of the field's leading figures, this book provides extensive coverage of the background and fundamentals of radiation detection and goes on to examine specific technologies and systems in depth and, in some cases, for the first time in print.
Technologies discussed include
- Photovoltaic detectors
- Photoconductive detectors
- Thermal detectors
- Schottky-barrier diodes
- Bandgap-engineered photodetectors via multiple quantum wells and superlattices
Supplemented with 470 illustrations and a complete glossary of the nomenclature, this is the ideal text for senior- and graduate-level courses in radiometry and optical detection.
Customer Reviews:
this book belongs on your shelf.......2006-11-18
I quite like this book.
For example, it has a very nice discussion of radiometry. It even has sample questions so that you can verify your understanding.
On a number of topics, it has a clear discussion that has enough depth that you will not need additional references. This includes the ideas of NEP and detector noise.
superlattices and heterostructures.......2005-03-30
The authors give a comprehensive and still very up to date summary of the entire field of infrared detectors. Both experimentalists and theorists can benefit from the text. All the major detector types are covered, with clear explanations of their underlying principles.
The early chapters on basic device physics could perhaps have been omitted or shortened. The rest of the book assumes a readership that is at least at the graduate level, and who should surely know the early material.
The book also explains the latest ideas in the field of superlattices and quantum heterostructure design. This started in the 1980s and has produced quite useful devices.

Customer Reviews:
Very Concise and Clear.......2007-06-25
I am currently still reading this book, and I am planning on getting my certification. The book is written in a very concise, clear and easy to understand manner. Everything is explained with clear examples: every concept explained is easily grasped, and the details fall nicely into place. This is by far the best written manual/study guide I have seen on the subject.
Wireless# Certification Official Study Guide.......2006-10-04
This is a good book. The book provides an excellent overview of all of the technologies on the Wireless# exam it also serves as an excellent reference guide. I passed the Wireless# exam using this book and I have frequently returned to this text follow reference material during the course of my work.
Wireless#.......2006-09-22
This is a well written book, it held my interest though the whole book I never had to force myself to read like some tech books. It not only helped me pass my wireless# exam but I believe that it helped me pass my Network+ exam also.
Fantastic introduction to Wireless.......2006-08-24
I took the Wireless# exam today and passed after using this excellent book. The book is extremely well written and easy to follow. Even if you already know Wi-Fi pretty well, chances are you might not know a lot about all the other wireless standards out there. As a previous reviewer said, this book gives you a nice broad introduction to all the major wireless technologies currently in use. The information is highly current as the book just came out this year. I recommend taking the exam, as preparing for that will ensure that you have a good grasp of the contents of this book. Even if you are already a CWNA, it's still worth reading this book. Be warned though that the exam expects you to have thorough knowledge of all the standards described in the book including relevant frequencies, ranges, etc. I recommend the practice tests on the CWNP site if you intend to take the exam. In short I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to get a grasp of all things wireless.
GREAT place to start in the wireless field.......2006-08-03
I just passed the Wireless# test today with a really good score. Before taking the test, I read every page of this book. It also has very good questions (with answers explained) at the end of each chapter. If you have a desire to work in the wireless field, but have no real experience yet, the chapters on wireless security, installation, troubleshooting and optimization really give you a head start towards that experience!
Sure you can find a study guide that will just barely give you enough information to pass the test. If you would rather have more information behind the meat, this book is for you. Some of this material was new to me, so I wanted to really know the subjects before taking the test. Besides, this book is the official study guide for the Wireless# test by the CWNP program.
This book (and certification) really is a mile wide and a couple of inches deep. Great place to start in the wireless field. After that, you're really set to start with your CWNA study and test. Now you're getting into a subject that is only a half mile wide, and many more feet deep. CWSP is even smaller but much deeper.
Good luck and have fun!

A classic in its field.......2001-10-05
The Infrared Handbook is a classic in its field and a must for anyone working in the defense optics industry.
overpriced and low binding quality.......1999-07-18
The binding quality is very low on this nearly public domain book. The covers are plastic and the margins are very narrow. The book feels like it will fall apart after a year of use. Try for a previous printing at a used book site. The previous printings were much higher quality.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-08-04
If you need or want to know anything about digital Infrared Photography
this is the book to get it was exactly what I need to get started.
Most Information Available On Internet.......2007-07-03
Most of the information in this book is available for free on the internet. Filter information, how to properly expose and focus a shot, etc. is all basic and common sense. The most disappointing part of the book was the post processing. Almost all of the post-processing instructions describe how to use Photoshop PLUG-INS that the reader may not have. Each of the plug-ins mentioned will cost you between $50 - $200 and even if you already have them the instructions are so basic you never get a feel for what you are doing or why.
If you don't have access to the internet and are a complete newbie to IR Photography this book would be OK, which is why I am giving it 2 stars.
Complete Guide to Digital Infrared Photography by Joe Farace.......2007-05-07
As a photographer for the last 38 years in both digital and film, I have kept up with the most recent trends of the trade. This book is self explanatory and copiously illustrated by the author's work and his directions to his readers to seek out other photographers more capable in the art of Infrared Digital Photography was a plus as well!
With three art degrees and aa a retired illustrator from Boeing Airplane Co., my camera is an extension of my talent base and not an after thought. With all this going for me, I have sought out information to make greater leaps in my phtotgraphic art.
I highly recommended this book because the Author does not toot his own horn, but rather shows by example how the process of great infrared images is best accomplished with cameras that are infrared sensative and those that are not. His stepwise "Scope and Sequence approach" with Photoshop or what have you, in the before to after production of great photos is superbe!
I highly recommend this book for anybody looking for the nuts and bolts of how to better his/hers own abilities in not only digital natural light photos but the Infrared side of this art as well!
Best guide for digital infrared.......2007-05-07
This book is one of few resources available. Also bought Digital Infrared Photography by Patricia Rice which, although not exclusive to digital, is great companion to this book.
Opening New Doors into Amateur Photography.......2006-12-02
Infrared photography has been around for a long time, but its use has been held back by the lack of availability of IR film and by the frequently unexpected results which you didn't discover until you were back at the darkroom.
Perhaps the biggest user of IR film was the military because the IR image often produced images that allowed other features to be seen when compared with ordinary film.
With the advent of digital cameras, selecting the proper camera only requires the addition of a filter to enable it to take IR images. And all of the other advantages are there such as immediately reviewing the picture on the LCD screen. This book is aimed at the advanced amateur or professional who has the need or just the desire to capture images from the IR spectrum. It includes just about everything there is to know about shooting in the in the infrared from testing your cameras sensitivite to if using your televisions remote control feature to print out the images on ink jet printers.

Book Description
Fundamentals of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy teaches the basics of FTIR spectroscopy to those new to the field and serves as an excellent reference for experienced users. This book explains difficult theoretical concepts using diagrams and easy-to-understand language with a minimum of complex mathematics. It contains a unique chapter on spectral data manipulation and a discussion of the 15 pitfalls of quantitative analysis. The comprehensive glossary provides quick and easy access to important FTIR terms.
Customer Reviews:
Good Start.......1999-12-17
This book is excellent for the person new to the concepts and applications of FTIR spectroscopy. Smith uses clear and concise language that is easy to interpret. Other books about the same subject are very difficult to read, and the language is too technical. This book provides an excellent base to build your knowledge of the subject on. Hats off to Dr. Smith - his book has helped me a lot.
Do not throw away your money!.......1998-08-25
This book use very simplistic explanation of FTIR Spectroscopy. It is oriented on non-technical person with no background in physics. At the same time the terminology used requires that background. Result: confusion and disappointment. Not to mistake an honorable reader, the word "Fundamentals" in the title should be replaced with something like " Introduction.... for technicians".

Offering authoritative reviews by internationally recognized experts, the book provides a wealth of information on the essential principles and methods of the generation of coherent mid-infrared light and on some of its applications. The instructive nature of the book makes it an excellent text for physicists and practicing engineers who want to use mid-infrared laser sources in spectroscopy, medicine, remote sensing and other fields, and for researchers in various disciplines requiring a broad introduction to the subject.
Customer Reviews:
mid IR book .......2006-06-30
This book contains diode lasers, Quantum cascaded lasers, OPO, ultrafast and fiber lasers and even some contents on THz .In addition to brief recap of theoretical knowledge to understand the nonlinear process it is primarily good for editorized summary of mid -IR lasers experiments done around the world. For anyone interested into detail, there are lots of references at the back of every chapter. If you are looking for theoretical understanding of those various processes mentioned above it is not what you want.
However as an Electro-optics engineer working in the field of nonlinear optics, the contents are quite useful for me personally.
