2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought.......2007-09-13

I bought this as a present for my wife. We had just returned from a trip that included a visit to the Grand Canyon, and I wanted to get her a memento of the visit. This book sounded good, but was not the one that included the beautiful vistas that we wanted. There are some photos too dark to really discern why they are included. There are some photos of a boat on the bank of the river. That could be from anywhere.
Although I suppose others may find it interesting, we didn't want a book of prose, we just wanted amazing photos. This was not that book.

5 out of 5 stars The finest Grand Canyon book at the lowest price...........2007-02-15

This book is so awesome, and of such high quality, that its Amazon price seems surreal...I have two copies and am ordering a third, for posterity or whatever.

Intensely beautiful photographic prints, at the very leading edge of Canyon photos....almost beyond description!

If you buy one copy of this book, you'll then want another for a gift, and another for your own collection.....etc.

5 out of 5 stars off the charts superb stunning startling good heavens.......2006-11-03

Yes, you would expect truly astounding photography here, and you get exactly that, in lots of different flavors too, but the stories are deft and revealing -- far more than in a book of photos alone of a place that you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. Trimble himself is a master craftsman with the camera, but his service here is to gather some really remarkable work and voices into a tome that anyone who has gaped and prayed there will want to paw through before you get major brownie points for giving it to someone else. Terrific work.

5 out of 5 stars Review by Jennifer Owings Dewey, author/illustrator.......2006-09-28

Lasting Light is a treasure, a compilation of photographs taken of the Crand Ganyon over a broad stretch of time. The viewer/reader may gain a sense of history, passing from the old to the new. The book is an experience in images of the vast wonder of the Canyon and the smallest, most discreet detail. Because the text is direct and not-technical, anyone interested in what is grand and lit by extraordinary light, the Grand Canyon itself, will find this work a delight.

5 out of 5 stars A superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.......2006-07-10

Lasting Light: 125 Years Of Grand Canyon Photography by award-winning author and photographer Stephen Trimble is a visual celebration and documentation of the beauty and grandeur of one of the most photographed subjects on earth -- the Grand Canyon. Comprised of the best of 125 years of great photographs beginning with the pioneering glass plate negatives of the 19th century to the digital images of the 21st century, Lasting Light produces spectacular visuals enhanced with an accompanying text of fascinating details regarding the advances of photography, stories of various individual photographers, and the relationship between the photographers and the unique American icon that is the Grand Canyon. As a coffetable art book, Lasting Light is a simply wonderful contribution to any personal, academic, or community library photography reference collection and would make a superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.

5 out of 5 stars This book will get you started or enrich your experience.......2004-08-05

I'm new to kayaking and being a kind of do-it-yourself person, instead of taking a kayak class, I rather bought this book.

Reading through the chapters and then trying the methods in the kayak, I quickly learned different strokes, rolls, manouvers, reading the whitewater, understanding where danger may come from, how to avoid it, ... I'm not saying I became an expert or something (afterall it's been only a couple of weeks I have it), but I did get the proper knowledge base to build from - and since it gave me the understanding of the concepts, I can easily extent my knowledge by watching (or asking) expert kayakers - you can learn so much more and faster if you know *what* to watch or ask!

I was not comfortable even thinking of more demanding rapids or performing some tricks before, but now I feel that I want to try it. Now quite now, but eventually, when I get more experience and confidence.

I give it five stars because it is easy to read/understand and at the same time very informative. If you are a begginer and are buying a whitewater kayak book, you can't miss with this one. You should also consider this book if you are familiar with whitewater, but want to extend your knowledge (performing tricks, playboating, ...). It sure boosted my whitewater experience.

4 out of 5 stars The Essential Whitewater Kayaker.......2000-06-29

A friend of mine let me borrow this book, seeing how I am new to the sport, and it was great. It took me from basic rolls to maneuvering in whitewater. This book is great from beginners to experienced paddlers. No matter your skill level this book is a must. I will definately get my own copy.

Lod Airport, Israel: Two Concorde jets take off for a U.N. conference that will finally bring peace to the Middle East. Covered by F-14 fighters, accompanied by security men, the planes carry warriors, pacifists, lovers, enemies, dignitaries--and a bomb planted by a terrorist mastermind. Suddenly they're forced to crash-land at an ancient desert site. Here, with only a handful of weapons, the men and women of the peace mission must make a desperate stand against an army of crack Palestinian commandos--while the Israeli authorities desperately attempt a rescue mission. In a land of blood and tears, in a windswept place called Babylon, it will be a battle of bullets and courage, and a war to the last death.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rivers of Babylon is NOT DeMille's first book.......2007-09-08

I still rate this novel very high, as it was a huge departure from his earlier 12 or 13 paperback novels (I have 12). As with any book of this genre, the dating hurts its 'suspension of disbelief' but the characters are very good, as is the infrastructure and movement details.
Highly recommended (and required, if you are a true fan)

3 out of 5 stars Steamy Sandstorm Showdown.......2007-05-26

As a puritanical American, I like to learn something when I read a novel, not just enjoy the story. This taste is well satisfied in the Babylon novel: I learned a decent amount concerning modern weaponry and military strategy.

I didn't learn much about human nature. The characters in the book are types, and there are so many of them that there's no time to develop one figure in depth. The female figures are all out of the 1970s feminist mold: superwomen with courage and combat skill. And we've got a demonic villain and a troubled hero. I never figured out exactly what troubles the hero or drives the villain, but the characters are there to move the plot, not to move me. The only thing I remember about the hero is that he's always in a bad mood.

The love scenes between the troubled hero and the mightiest of the superwomen are awkward. When reading these, I wished the lovers would clean their rifles so I could learn something about that process. If you don't know the mechanics of sex, of course, these scenes will blow your mind.

What I do like in the novel is the sense of the past still controlling the present in the Middle East. DeMille wisely sets most of the action on the site of ancient Babylon; this gives him ample opportunities to take a long view. He also conveys the intense connection between Jews and the Holy Land.

I wasn't able to read this book in a short time. The scenes in the desert are repetitive. The good side of this: you can come back to the story after a week away from it and easily pick it up again.

Of course, I have to admit that I did indeed keep picking up the book until I finished it. DeMille rings enough changes in the plot to keep you wondering where he's going next. You don't particularly care who lives or dies--and that's good, because almost everybody dies--but you are curious about how those airline passengers are going to outdo terrorist troops. Hint: there's a lot of digging.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book.......2006-12-31

I like Demille's books because they are a departure from the standard - guy gets killed, ace detective comes on the scene and figures it all out magically - type of book. This is my third novel by Mr. Demille and I can't quit.

This one is a little bit slower moving that the others of his that I've read.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as his other stuff.......2006-03-27

Usually Nelson's books are fast paced and riviting, but this one not so much. I found myself skimming a lot of it, as the descriptions of dead cities was just overdone. It was an ok read but I would recommend some of his other stuff first.

3 out of 5 stars His First is His Worst.......2006-01-24

I consider Nelson Demille one of my favorite authors, so I have somewhat a bias toward giving him a bad review. I'm not even sure I would give this 3 stars though if his name wasn't on the cover. His John Corey books were GREAT, my favorite character in any book hands down, and Word of Honor is one of the best books I've read yet. So even after reading the mixed reviews I dove into it expecting a great read but was soon dissapointed to find that the book reads like a cheesy movie script. The plot advances so quickly, unrealistically, and seemly without neccesary background information at points it sometimes makes you feel as if you missed something(i.e. Hausners divine intervention suddenly knowing the planes whereabouts). The love stories in the book contain such terrible dialogue it's annoying to read. In all his other books you grow to love or hate the characters, they usually have great depth and realism. In this book I hated most of the characters because I found the dialogue cheesy and unreal. I would constantly ask myself "who would ever say this crap, or act this way?". The book was a dissapointment coming from such a great author and if it were his most recent work I would have thought this guy completely lost his touch. Albeit the book did have a few catching moments, due to a decent plot, they were few and poorly written, nothing like I have come to expect in his following works. The positive side of this book was discovering how much Nelson Demille has matured and what a great and entertaining writer he has become. His first is without a doubt his worst and the ONLY one of his works I would not reccomend. Sorry Nelson.

    Book Description

In 1928 New York native Muriel Earley Sheppard moved with her mining engineer husband to the Toe River Valley —an isolated pocket in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge and Iron Mountains. Sheppard began visiting her neighbors and forming friendships in remote coves and rocky clearings, and in 1935 her account of life in the mountains—Cabins in the Laurel—was published. The book included 128 striking photographs by the well-known Chapel Hill photographer, Bayard Wootten, a frequent visitor to the area.

The early reviews of Cabins in the Laurel were overwhelmingly positive, but the mountain people—Sheppard's friends and subjects—initially felt that she had portrayed them as too old-fashioned, even backward. As novelist John Ehle shows in his foreword, though, fifty years have made a huge difference, and the people of the Toe River Valley have been among its most affectionate readers.

This new large-format edition, which makes use of many of Wootten's original negatives, will introduce Sheppard's words and Wootten's photography to a whole new generation of readers—in the Valley and beyond.

This masterpiece recounts the gripping adventures of Buck, a courageous creature forced into the brutal life of sled-dog during the Alaskan gold rush. Forced to relinquish the safety of his familiar world, Buck survives and ultimately prevails in the harsh realities of the Far North through the discovery of his own primitive nature. 5 out of 5 stars Buck realizes his potential.......2005-08-13

Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.

Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.

This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.

In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

The heroine, Angel, is a young woman who was sold into prostitution as a child. Michael Hosea is a godly man sent into Angel’s life to draw her into the Savior’s redeeming love. ALSO AVAILABLE: Now own this beloved classic in the keepsake hardcover edition!

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

    Then she meets Michael Hosea.

A man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything, Michael Hosea obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation until, despite her resistance her frozen heart begins to thaw. But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she can no longer deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael Hosea does…the One who will never let her go.

A powerful retelling of the book of Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

    Story Behind the Book

“Writing Redeeming Love was a form of worship for me. Through it, I was able to thank God for loving me even when I was defiant, rebellious, contemptuous of what I thought being a Christian meant, and afraid to give my heart away. I had wanted to be my own god and have control of my life the way Eve did in the Garden of Eden. Now I know to be loved by Christ is the ultimate joy and fulfillment. Everything in Redeeming Love was a gift from the Lord: plot, characters, theme. None of it is mine to claim.”

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captivating, Interesting, Emotional.......2007-10-08

This is one of my most favorite books. This is the first book I read by Francine Rivers and thought it was wonderful! Our church ladies summer reading group chose it so that's how I came to read it. It's a western story that portrays God's forgiveness and love for us like the book of Hosea in the Bible upon which this story is loosely based. It gives insight into prostitution and sparks some interesting discussion. The main character, Angel, starts out as a beautiful little girl who gets sold into prostitution with no decent role models and doesn't see real love until she meets Michael Hosea who decides to marry her and take her out of the brothel no matter what. Her life is mostly down, but has ups when she's with him, but she feels so unworthy. Eventually, she learns to trust Michael and more importantly, God, who changes her life. Although it is fiction, the characters are well developed and seem very real. I found myself pulling for Angel all through the book, in spite of her poor decisions. Although some parts are very depressing, it has an amazing ending the left me feeling happy. I even picked up a new prayer idea from this book. This book covers a wide spectrum from cruel and depressing to wonderful and joyful, even though it didn't end like I thought it would. I highly recommend this book!

After reading all the reviews, I just had to get this book. After all, everyone just has the most glowing things to say about it. I am agog. This is just a terrible book. The characters aren't interesting and there is nothing challenging about it. Obviously, I am just not getting why everyone loves this book so much, but the writing is average, the characters forgettable and completely boring. I simply do not understand why this book had garnered so much praise! Ugh!

    5 out of 5 stars Redeeming Love-Fiction.......2007-10-01

Fantastic Christian book that has several lessons and even has topics for discussion. The book made a terrific "Just Because" gift for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever.......2007-09-29

this is the best book I have ever read, I sent it to all my girlfriends and women family members.

    5 out of 5 stars Riveting!.......2007-09-27

This book is a riveting and powerful retelling of the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer. I loved the journey through it - I could feel Angel's pain, her despair, her certainty that she didn't deserve Hosea's love or a better life, that she would always be a prostitute. As for Hosea, he was not, as the hero in a romance novel often is, perfect - he struggled with lust, with anger at God and anger at Angel, and with his desire to do things his own way. Yet his faith always overcame in the end, and by listening to God's direction, he knew a joy unsurpassed.

This book grabbed me in on the first page and didn't let me go until I was finished - it's been distracting me from work for days! I finally just sat down and decided to finish it; I figured it would be faster.

Hope and despair. Love and hatred. Rebellion and submission. Fear and comfort. Confusion and clarity. Excruciating pain and unrivaled joy. What more could you want?

Her name meant "date palm," and like her namesake, Tamar hoped to survive the harsh environment she was placed in: to bend but not to break. Rubbed with scented oil and arrayed in wedding finery, 14-year-old Tamar is thrust into a world of abuse, betrayal, and disillusionment when she is given in marriage to an evil, idol-worshiping man. In the face of her suffering, she must make choices: Will she let her new husband, Er, destroy her innocence and corrupt her? Will she leave the religion of the Canaanites and embrace the God of the Hebrews despite the life of misery she is cast into? Or will she fall into despair and become as wicked as her husband and his brothers?

Unveiled is the first in award-winning veteran author Francine Rivers' Lineage of Grace series of five novellas, which feature biblical women in the genealogy of Christ: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. This dramatic retelling of the scandalous risks Tamar must take to ensure her place in biblical history showcases Rivers' ability to sketch a short vignette of an ancient character and bring her to life in the minds of contemporary readers. The twin themes of sin's consequences and God's redemption resonate throughout the pages of this engrossing novella. --Cindy Crosby

5 out of 5 stars Tamar brought to life.......2007-05-19

Francine Rivers has the wonderful ability to take a character from the bible and bring her to life, by adding context and details. Although the additions are fictional, they are well researched and give great insight into the culture and the times, and make for a fascinating story. Hard to put this little book down!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book..........2007-03-19

I didn't know I could have so much knowledge of Tamar when she seems to just be a blip in the Bible. My eyes have been opened. The author gave a wonderful account into her life but also into Judah. A book I couldn't put down or stop recommending.

4 out of 5 stars A few thoughts on Tamar.......2007-03-15

Francine Rivers does an excellent job with this story. So often the women and "the other" are voiceless in the Bible; it's good to hear a story from their point of view.

A retired bishop once said, "As long as you don't contradict scripture, you can use your imagination to weave a credible story." That is exactly what Ms. Rivers does here. From Tamar's upbringing and early home life, to being plucked as the wife of Er (a man who was wicked in the Lord's sight), to being given to Onan and then being shunned as a widow . . . the story moves along very well and gives the reader some insight into what it could have been like to live as a piece of property.

There were a couple of theological quibbles I had, mainly with some of the questions in the back; not enough to not use the book, but enough to make my parishioners aware of them.

This whole set should offer a good discussion around the ancestral women in Jesus' lineage.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for those who love the Old Testament stories!.......2007-02-07

The message of this book is that God acts in improbable ways in order to show His sovereignty, His grace, and His power. As Paul says in Romans "Who are we to question our Creator?," yet is our human concept to call this improbable. It is just wonderful to read a story that has so much of God's plan woven in! Just like He chose Abraham as the father of His chosen people, who was a common man from Ur and from a human standpoint did not deserve this call more than any of us do.....He chose this unsuspecting Canaanite woman Tamar to carry on the line of Jesus. Even Isaac's son Judah who fled his brothers to marry a non-Hebrew woman, continuing to be tormented by the memory of what he and his brothers had done to Joseph years before, is the line of the Holy Son of God! Improbable? Yet it is all in God's plan! And how it is all woven hundreds of years prior to lead up to the Son of God's birth!

Tamar was different from her Canaanite clan. She wanted to know the Hebrew God, Judah's God. She wanted more than worship of clay idols. She felt there was something more to life...she longed for more. She wanted to know the God who had power. What an amazing character Francine Rivers portrays, having to move from home for an arranged marriage as a young teenage girl. Her mother and father needed their daughter to be the "savior" of the family, to help connect the families as a protection to their Canaanite clan from the Hebrews. She had to move to a foreign land and be the wife of the infamous eldest son of Judah, only to be abused, rejected by her mother-and-law, unaccepted as a true member of the family. Yet, she remained true to her pledge through it all. God rewards this remarkable young woman...as the great-great-...-grandmother of Jesus Christ!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a historical painting of this wonderful Bible story. As Christians, we should all be as true to our God as Tamar was to God before she even knew Him!

I read many books by Christian authors. I found this book to be of special interest. I vaguely knew who Tamar was but this book, which I read in one afternoon, sent me to study Genesis. I have a desire to know more about the customs practiced in the Old Testament.

New York Times bestselling author Barbara Delinsky touches the heart and spirit with this charming story, first published in 1982, of a young woman's search for passion and renewal.

No one could have imagined naïve and pampered Rory Matthews in the wilderness of the Yukon Territory -- least of all Rory herself. But arriving unexpectedly to join her brother on a scientific expedition was Rory's way of putting her spoiled, rich-girl ways behind her.

Though she came prepared for the rough challenge of the land, she wasn't ready for the raw power of nature she discovered in the arms of Eric Clarkson. As majestic and rugged as the land around her, Eric was a man who perplexed her as much as he intrigued her ... a man who infuriated her even as he offered a passionate, fulfilling new beginning to her life.

      4 out of 5 stars Love's Letting Go.......2003-04-25

This was a really good book of adventure and personal growth for Rory the heroine, but more importantly it was a story of love that knew how to draw back....let go....let grow...and returning to claim itself unselfishly.

Eric allowed Rory to first find herself and reach her goals of personal growth before he claimed the love he knew they both could nurture together.

From the frustrating misadventures through the dangers and heartbreaks...this couple keeps you from wanting to put down the book....and keeps you praying for their happiness.

Wonderful love story of courage, adventure and unselfish sacrifices.
