Book Description

In Life After Life Raymond Moody investigates more than one hundred case studies of people who experienced "clinical death" and were subsequently revived.  First published in 1975, this classic exploration of life after death started a revolution in popular attitudes about the afterlife and established Dr. Moody as the world's leading authority in the field of near-death experiences.  Life after Life forever changed the way we understand both death -- and life -- selling millions of copies to a world hungry for a greater understanding of this mysterious phenomenon.

The extraordinary stories presented here provide evidence that there is life after physical death, as Moody recounts  the testimonies of those who have been to the "other side" and back -- all bearing striking similarities of an overwelming positive nature. These moving and inspiring accounts give us a glimpse of the peace and unconditional love that await us all.

Great Book! Lots of good information on an interesting subject. This book not only answers inportant questions about life, but it made me formulate new questions? This book really helped me see the world in a new light. It's quite thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing "Life After Life".......2007-08-29

This book brought home the fact that there really is something after this life. It was recommended to me by my mother's former employer after her death. The book is based on scientific research without emphasis on religion. I have given copies to many friends who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

5 out of 5 stars A "Metanoia" experience.......2007-08-27

Jesus' first words ("keynote") in the first of the written Gospels of the Christian scriptures is the Greek word "Metanoiesete" which means literally "Change the way you think about reality". This is what comes to mind as I read the reports of Dr. Moody's patients. They speak of an experience outside of time and beyond three dimensions.
For us to conceive of something requires that there be a prior three dimensional experience, in time, for us to develop a concept. That is what makes these reports "inconceivable", yet "believable", just like what is prior to the "Big Bang" wherein the Cosmos "emerged" from a "point of no dimensions". This also is inconceivable and consequently not a "fact" in the usual sense of scientific data.
After Jesus said, "Metanoiesete", he went on to say that the "good news" is that the Kingdom of Heaven is "within" you, not conceivable but believable.
Moody's small book is mind altering.

1 out of 5 stars Hallucination-the word of the day.......2007-08-25

As someone who had an NDE I wish Moody would have interviewed me. I was racing on my motorcycle and flew over the handlebars and landed on my head to which I was unaware of my surroundings and a fellow rider picked me up and got me to stagger home. I do not remember anything for the estimated 20 minutes after the crash except waking up. To think you had an experience otherwise is a hallucination or the mind being deprived of a sufficient level of oxygen.

5 out of 5 stars A classic study of NDE (near death experience).......2007-08-16

To the best of my memory, there are only three books I have read three times in my life: The Bible, Death Be Not Proud and this book, the 1975 classic by Raymond A. Moody, M.D., that invigorated the modern investigation into NDE's (near-death experiences). I first read it in junior high when I ordered it as a Scholastic selection and I read it the third time after my father's death in 2004. It is the starting point in the scientific investigation into the question of consciousness (or spirit or soul) surviving the body's ultimate demise.

5 out of 5 stars Home With God In A Life That Never Ends.......2007-10-01

This should be a MUST READ for everyone and especially for those who harbor doubts concerning what happens after death. Life is a journey and we are here to experience, nothing more and nothing less. Great Book.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read if the after-life interests you .......2007-10-01

Over the years I've read many of Mr. Walsch's books because I found the content to be inspirational or thought-provoking in several ways. I particularly liked "Conversations with God Book 1" (CwG Book 1) because it had a profound effect on my spiritual philosophy. In this book Walsch focuses primarily on the after-life, and if that is a serious interest of yours then this would be a good book to read. If not, then I'd recommend considering one of his other titles instead, such as "Friendship with God" Friendship with God: An Uncommon Dialoguefor example, or CwG Book 1 Conversations with God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 1), which in my view remains the best work he has ever done.

5 out of 5 stars Home with God.......2007-08-26

Great information, well written and mind opening to a new way of processing and understanding life and the transitional experience we call death.

5 out of 5 stars Home is Where the God Is.......2007-08-13

I stumbled upon this book in a used bookstore, had no idea it was even out. Having enjoyed reading his CWG books, I grabbed it for a good read, but it was so much more than that. I was provoked in new ways, my beliefs du jour were challenged on every other page, I found myself writing notes till my fingers hurt...this is unusual for me as I have read ALL the books of this ilk for over 30 years and NEVER had such a response before. Since I enjoy being challenged and shaken up, it was an absolute mixture of joy and discomfort and ahas and oh ohs... If you are interested in the possibilities of what lies 'Beyond' this book gives a unique tour and I felt like I was 'there' (wherever 'there' might be!). I do not recommend this for the faint of heart or for those that are too sure in what they believe. For others it is a MUST!

1 out of 5 stars New Age Pablum.......2007-08-12

It is practically impossible to read this book with a straight face. The images and the dialogue are so sophmoric that one begins to wonder how the author could write this "dialogue" without blushing. To wrap genuine esoteric thought and principles up in such drivle is not worthy of the topic he addresses. Like most beginner's texts, it will prove to be either a stepping stone as an introduction to real life and death issues, or it will serve as a stumbling block to those who think that in reading this book they have found the "Truth" and will stop searching for real enlightment.

Book Description

Don’t look up

It won’t help. You can’t get out of the way, you can’t dig a hole deep enough to hide. The end is coming, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

So why read this book?
Because you can’t look away when not just the religious fanatics are saying we’re all going to be destroyed but the scientists are in on the act too. Here’s what they’re saying:

• We’re a million years over due for a mass extinction.

• The sun at radiation minimum is acting much worse than at solar maximum, and one misdirected spewing of plasma could fry us in an instant.

• The magnetic field—which shields us from harmful radiation—is developing a mysterious crack.

• Our solar system is entering an energetically hostile part of the galaxy.

• The Yellowstone supervolcano is getting ready to blow, and if it does, we can look forward to nuclear winter and 90 percent annihilation.

• The Maya, the world’s greatest timekeepers ever, say it’s all going to stop on December 21, 2012.

So, see? There’s nothing you can do, but you might as well sit back and enjoy the show.

That’s why you should read this book.

*****

Dear Reader,

If there were a chance that opening this book could set off a chain of events that would lead to Apocalypse, to the end of Life as we know it, would you be tempted? Finger poised uncertainly above the flashing red button? How about if the Apocalypse promised to result in a new age of enlightenment, a Heaven on Earth like never before?

Personally, I’ll take the security of my cozy life over a chance at nirvana. But status quo may no longer be an option, for any of us. This book will convince you that there is a nonnegligible chance that the year 2012 will be more tumultuous, catastrophic, and, quite possibly, revelatory, than any other year in human history.

Parts of this book are best read with a bowl of popcorn: looking into the jaws of a great white shark in search of the meaning of death; touring a picturesque Guatemalan town with Mayan shaman just weeks before it is utterly destroyed. Other sections go better with a tranquilizer, such as the impending eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano, or the mass extinction headed our way—on the scale of the great collision that destroyed the dinosaurs and 70 percent of all other species, our best scientists contend that it’s now overdue. Nail-biters should beware the fact that the next peak in the sunspot cycle, due in 2012, is widely expected to set records for the number and intensity of solar storms pummeling the Earth with radiation and igniting natural calamities such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and Katrina-sized hurricanes. And that our entire solar system appears to be moving into a dangerous interstellar energy cloud.

Is it a coincidence that the burgeoning war between Christianity and Islam seems hell-bent for Armageddon? Or that numerous other religions, philosophies, and cultural traditions are signaling that the end is near, with 2012 emerging as the consensus target date? A new era is about to be born, with all the pain and blood and joy and release that birth naturally entails.

Facing oblivion, or at least mega-metamorphosis, is something that few of us are emotionally prepared to do. Thus my excuse for the gallows humor that pervades this story. In a memorable Mary Tyler Moore episode, Mary cracks up laughing at the funeral of Chuckles the Clown who, dressed as a peanut while marching in a parade, was shucked to death by an elephant. If Mary can giggle in the face of death, so can we.

With kind regards,
Lawrence E. Joseph

5 out of 5 stars Waiting to Exhale.......2007-09-27

Something in the world has changed. We all know it. We all feel as though we are holding our breath. I have observed birds feeding in places where they've rarely been seen before. I have observed butterflies this year become increasingly aggressive. Bees in California are disappearing. Weather patterns are shifting. Governments seem to be spiraling downward in an attempt to control, control, control. So what's going on?

Lawrence E. Joseph takes us with him on his journey to discover the source of our unease. We travel with him through all the possible scenarios beginning with the Mayan prediction of world disaster in 2012. He doesn't go looking for the boogey-man in the closet. He looks to the scientific world for answers. The answers that he finds are not encouraging. Sunspots are active. Never mind the Celebrity Disaster of the Year--global warming, the entire universe may be heating up. Then there is my personal favorite, the reversal of the poles.

Joseph does not overlook mankind's potential contribution to the disaster scenario either. He zeros in on the heart of prophecy, mysticism and madness. He looks at religion.

It is the Jewish prophecy that brings with it the greatest potential for self-fulfillment and the greatest potential for the destruction of mankind. The U.S. government seems to be a willing accomplice in bringing Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri's vision into focus. The bombing of Afganistan began after sundown on October 13, 2001.

"The Gog and Magog conflict is prophesied to last for seven years at which time, autumn 2008, a major revelation concerning Mashiach (Messiah) will be made." (See page 195)

Apocalypse 2012 is a measured, sometimes amusing, well-written adventure into the world of potential disasters. The author does wobble a bit at the end. He apparently felt compelled to offer some type of direction or comfort to his readers. There is none. More to the point, once you accept that a disaster will occur without knowing its source, you can't do anything more than live your life for the moment, the best way you know how.

Lawrence E. Joseph can be forgiven for wobbling. After all, the entire earth wobbles in its rotation. The last wobble resulted in a disruption of energy streaming from the Milky Way, 26,000 years ago. The next disruption is expected to occur on 12/21/2012 at 11:11 pm Universal Time. (See page 33)

1 out of 5 stars If this is science I am Superman.......2007-09-25

This book is a tour through some of the cutting edge research in; volcanology, geology, astronomy as viewed by some controversial figures in those fields. Mostly a non-scientific look into the fringe elements surrounding 2012, the end of the Mayan Long Count. The book dissapoints on two counts; it promises to add some insight into the 2012 popular discourse, and it claims to be a scientific investigation. Unfortunately it does neither, as it adds nothing new to the understanding of 2012, the Maya or the Mayan Calendar, and it fails miserably to explain any valid scientific research. But It does expound profusely on controversial research without ever presenting it in a scientific manner. In the growing universe of popular culture 2012 literature, this book sits at the bottom of the pile.

4 out of 5 stars Not Proof, But Good Science.......2007-09-17

This book is not centered on Mayan calendar analysis, but rather on science. And it doesn't prove any date or time but does point in a very substantial way the ideas of a possible catastrophe. It relates to the recent (within 10 years, especially in 2003) solar flares on the Sun and subsequent earth storms and how they very much interact with each other. The Sun storms recorded are the most active in recent times possible the affects of hurricane Katrina and other Earth storms. Also, what is important is the gravitational pull, as well as the magnetic pull of the planets in our solar system, the sun affected much easier, as it being a gelatin like substance, not solid.

In addition, the entire solar system, according to Lawrence, is moving and about to enter an interstellar energy cloud which will have a major affect on magnetic pulls, a possible pole reversal, which could result in major electrical storms and other serious consequences. This will also affect the sun and solar system. Right now they are saying that there are serious cracks in the magnetic fields and there is more to this, as well as holes in the ozone which may be the result or something more than aerosol.

There are also other things to consider, such as the Wyoming supervolcano which, if erupted, is predicted to bring a major death toll over the earth as well ash to bring on a short term (10 years) ice age, which is one way the planet earth (Gaia- the theory of the earth being a living organism, as opposed to simply rock and elements - James Lovelock) can cool itself. This also relates to the earth's nuclear core being hot, in need of cooling when it gets overheated.

There is also the idea of the glaciers melting bringing less pressure on the Teutonic plates underneath, allowing more seismic activity and earthquakes. Not sure what to make of all this, except that the solar activity, the level of volcanic activity, the melting of glaciers, the interstellar cloud, as well as other theories of the overheated earth core and the ice melting fresh water in the salt oceans, possibly shutting down the conveyor belts all come into play. Now along with this, the Mayan calendar, and global warming in general, which Al Gore states will flood the oceans 24 feet, killing untold millions in land loss, agricultural disasters and famines, which then brings on major disease in poorer countries. It leaves us a lot to think about. I will say that if this interstellar cloud has the significance they are speaking about, then the magnetic reversals have the possibility of ending life as we know it.

I'd like to believe the optimistic escapee, the doomsday, wanna be believer and magick seeking individual, hopes that there is a noosphere (the idea of a psychic collective layer part of the organism earth) and looks towards the Mayans belief, that a consciousness transformation will take place, as our bodies and brains are made up of water and electricity. Who knows? It's a mystery, but there is global warming and definite climate changes ahead.

5 out of 5 stars A Logical Inquiry Into An Otherwise Hysterical Topic.......2007-09-10

This informative book is geared towards adults with an analytical bent, who wish to enter into an objective inquiry into the various predictions and talk of future catastrophe associated with the year 2012. The author succeeds in exploring these matters from an objective, non-judgmental point of view. His artful use of humor throughout the book serves to lighten the mood of an otherwise morbid and bleak subject.

The discussion draws from diverse sources of knowledge including several branches of the physical sciences, metaphysics, and a wide variety of religious points of view, in order to offer a well-rounded survey of the subject at hand. The book includes an extensive bibliography showing the vast wealth of information the author consulted. Indeed, it would seem that he left no stone unturned. The author successfully guides the reader through a systematic and logical thinking process about such matters, thereby dispelling the hype and hysteria, which so commonly follow topics of this type.

Overall, I found this book to be a well-balanced and logical overview of the issues now facing humanity regarding what the near future may have in store for us. We tend to think that the world will go on just as it always has, and so the exploration of these topics makes us stop and consider that we may not be as invulnerable as we think we are. We all take events like the Sun rising and setting on schedule, the regular turning of the seasons, and the rising and falling of the tides, for granted. This book refocuses the lens, so to speak, to show that in the whole of the Earth's history, things have not always been stable and constant; but that the Earth has, in fact, gone through many great cataclysms throughout its history. What would make us immune to experiencing one such event, or events, of great upheaval and change?

If for nothing else, exploring these ideas is a great opportunity to do a personal survey of why we are here, living on this little planet, within the vast universe; and what our personal purpose for living might be. It is also an opportunity to pause and realize just how fragile life is, and really take to heart the need to make the most of what we have, and to protect the resources that God, through nature, graciously provide for us.

1 out of 5 stars Projection and Make-belief.......2007-09-06

Remember Y2K? So much nonsense perpetuated by paranoid folks trying to impose their ungrounded fears onto others. We create our future. 2012 may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. In this new millennium it may be wise to step beyond superstition and stop being victims. Gaia is overpopulated and raped of its resources. What really needs to happen is collaboration and cooperation beyond the holy dollar - businesses changing their profit models away from growth only. And people honoring the planet beyond a blind consumerist and throw away culture. Rome's teachings waiting to be implemented globally...

Book Description

The bestselling author of Many Lives, Many Masters breaks new ground to reveal how progression therapy into future lives can help transform us in the present.

How often have you wished you could peer into the future? In Same Soul, Many Bodies, Brian L. Weiss, M.D., shows us how. Through envisioning our lives to come, we can influence their outcome and use this process to bring more joy and healing to our present lives. Dr. Weiss pioneered regression therapy -- guiding people through their past lives. Here, he goes beyond that to demonstrate the therapeutic benefits of progression therapy -- guiding people through the future in a scientific, responsible, healing way.

Through dozens of case histories detailing both past-life and future-life experiences, Dr. Weiss shows how the choices that we make now will determine our future quality of life. From Samantha, who overcame academic failure once she learned of her future as a great physician, to Evelyn, whose fears and prejudices ended after she envisioned prior and forthcoming lives as a hate victim, Dr. Weiss gives concrete examples of lives transformed by regression and progression therapy.

A groundbreaking work, Same Soul, Many Bodies is sure to deeply affect peoples' lives as they strive toward their future.

Download Description

"Noted psychiatrist Brian Weiss made headlines with his pioneering research on the healing power of past-life therapy in his million-copy bestseller, Many Lives, Many Masters. Now, in his astounding and groundbreaking new book, Dr. Weiss reveals how our future lives can actually transform us in the present. We all have lived past lives. We all will live future ones. What we do in this life will influence our lives to come as we evolve toward immortality. Dr. Weiss encourages this important recognition because recently he has not only regressed his patients into the past, but has progressed them into the future. And what they have discovered is that our futures are variable, so the choices we make now will determine the quality of life when we return. Using dozens of case histories, Dr. Weiss demonstrates the therapeutic benefits of progression, just as he has proved that journeys into our past lives can alleviate or cure our physical and emotional wounds in the present. Among the many patients who have benefited from the therapies are: Samantha, who overcame failures at school when she revisited her life as a Greek architect and later saw her future life as a great physician. Hugh, a psychic, tortured in the Middle Ages as a heretic, whose journey to the future brought him peace. Gary, whose glimpses into the future evaporated his depression and thoughts of suicide. Christina, whose past life and future memories enabled her to heal her relationship with her father and to finally find professional success and personal happiness. Evelyn, who, after reliving a past life as a Nazi officer and a future life as a teenage Arab girl, was able to release her fears and prejudices. Paul, whose love of Alison transcended past and future, transforming his current life and helping Alison to overcome a dangerous disease. Same Soul, Many Bodies is a revolutionary book, building on Dr. Weiss's discoveries about the past, a book that will take his millions of readers into an individual and collective future that they themselves will create. In the process, their present lives will be profoundly transformed, and they will find more peace, more joy, and more healing. "

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-08-09

He got it in one with this one. There is so much information in this one - pick a topic and he touches on it. And yet he wrote it in a manner like "Many Lives, Many Masters" as opposed to the almost textbook way he wrote "Through Time Into Healing" or others. It was too easy to read, even. I'm going to have to read it again.

You do not have to believe in reincarnation to get the messages out of this book. The book deals with love, compassion and empathy as core elements and I really think that those are universal messages everyone in the world can believe in.

I think this is the best book Weiss has written to date.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Future.......2007-08-08

In his earlier works best selling author and psychotherapist Dr Brian Weiss describes how past life regression therapy became the focus of his psychiatric practice, having amassed a large body of clinical evidence to support this admittedly controversial healing modality by virtue of its ability to uncover "causal agents" linked to past life trauma. In "Same Soul, Many Bodies," Dr Weiss takes a giant leap into the realm of the extremely controversial by introducing his readers to a whole new concept called "future life progression" therapy.

Never one to shy away from an opportunity to break new ground, the good doctor suggests that using both of these techniques in tandem may well prove to be every therapists dream-come-true. While past life regression aims to heal by resolving trauma and conflict from the past, the objective of future life progression is more about inspiring and motivating patients to change the directions of their lives by revealing the potentialities awaiting them in future incarnations, if they can just make the right choices in the here-and-now.

It`s an exciting prospect to be sure. And while there's broad acceptance among today's metaphysical community of the concept that linear time is a construct unique to our current third-density reality, many will have difficulty accepting Dr Weiss's approach, given our habituation to linear thinking. Even followers of Michael Newton's works, which explore the planning activities that souls carry out in between lifetimes may have difficulty reconciling how one of Dr Weiss' patients might get to review a future incarnation before they die and return to the dimension where that next lifetime gets planned out. Admittedly, on the surface, it does seem like something of a paradox.

To resolve this conundrum we must remember that every time Dr Newton regresses a patient to the point "in between lives" where the planning for each individual incarnation seems to occur, this process is necessarily being viewed from our current dimensional perspective of linear time. If the ancients were correct to say that all physical incarnations actually exist in a single moment of eternity, thereby rendering linear time an illusion, then it must also follow that all those planning sessions between incarnations must also exist as a single timeless continuum.

Let me illustrate this concept in a way any teenager will understand. Imagine you're sitting at your PC about to play a video game. The game is a bunch of computer code sitting idly on your hard drive. From the point of view of the game, time does not exist, because the game is not yet running. Once you load the game into RAM images of movement begin displaying on the screen and the game begins keeping track of time until your character in the game gets killed. Then you restart the game, your character comes back to life, and time is once again invoked. But all the planning and programming of possible game outcomes that could ever play out on your screen were decided long ago by the game designers and programmers.

Unpleasant as some of our egos may find such a prospect, maybe we too are just video game characters running around in the grand daddy of all video games, and maybe those memories of us planning out our lives on Earth is just the Higher Self part of who we really are, doing their jobs beyond the realm of time.

Then again, with all the metaphysical talk these days of spiritual graduation, ascension, the harvest... call it what you will... many believe at least some of us may not be coming back for another encore, and frankly, that would suit me just fine. Having spent the last 25 years examining my own former lives as Nestorius -- the Bishop of Constantiople in 430 AD, Genghis Khan's nephew Yegu, and Field Marshall von Moltke -- Gemany's Chief of the General Staff at the outbreak of WW I, the details of which have all been recounted in my autobiography "The Vortex," I can't say I've seen much worth repeating. Which I guess accounts for my prevailing attitude of late, namely.... been there, done that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-23

This book was awesome!!! Brian Weiss has done it again. I read his first book, Many Masters, Many Lives and loved it too! I would read any book that he published! A must read if you believe!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST Read...For EVERYONE!.......2007-06-14

I didn't know what to expect when a friend told me I should read this book. Soon after the first chapter, though, I was hooked! Brian Weiss is a wonderful writer who has the gift of fluidity in language. I couldn't put this book down!

After reading Same Soul, Many Bodies, I ordered every other book by Weiss I could find in print. For me, much of the content within the pages of all his work was very validating. Ahhh, that's another story!

I have recommended Weiss' books to all of my friends who have lost someone they dearly loved. I've also introduced my teenage daughters to the magnificent messages of hope and love in these brilliant books. The information retrieved from the state of being one experiences between lives is something we all should read and commit to memory. In doing so, we will change our life and, eventually, change our world.

Please, read these books. Even if you're a complete skeptic!

5 out of 5 stars Infinite possibilities.......2007-04-21

Would you like to know your future? Would you like to change it so that you experience the most joy in your life? Brian Weiss is well-known for his pioneering work in past life regression therapy. In this ground-breaking book, he progresses patients into their probable futures so that they can make present-day decisions which heal their past, present and future. Fascinating material. Highly recommended.

Book Description

New York Times #1 bestselling author and psychic Sylvia Browne and her son explain for pet owners of all ages what animals experience when their life on earth is over and what is waiting for them when they return home to the other side. Popular questions such as Does my pet miss me? Did he know I loved him? Can he hear me when I talk to him? Can he come back to visit me? and How will I be able to find my pet when I go home? are answered. The story begins when the spirit of Browne's dog, Jolie, leaves her body and goes home to live on the other side. Jolie runs, jumps, and plays with her eternal friends all around the world, devoid of the pain and suffering she was experiencing on earth. This is a comforting account of a pet's journey through one life and on to the next that explains how animals enjoy eternal happiness right alongside the people who love them.

2 out of 5 stars Animals on the Other Side.......2007-08-07

This book is a picture book of which 7\8ths are illustrations and 1\8th is text. It is 14 pages long and took me 5 minutes to read. Had I known what it was I would not have purchased it unless it was on the dollar table. There was a bit of information and I do find Sylvias books about the other side to be deeply interesting however this one was disappointing for the price. Oh well, they got my money.

THIS BOOK GAVE ME THE PEACE OF MIND I NEEDED TO ASSURE ME THATMY BELOVED COMPANION IS HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-07-15

I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially being from Sylvia Browne. I was very disappointed. It only took about three minutes to go through this book. It was nothing like what I expected. Sylvia tells the audience that anyone with pets need to get this book, she should tell them it is more for children. Pictures were nice, didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I feel I just threw my money away by buying this book. I should have read the ratings before buying it, I felt since Sylvia wrote it that it had to be worth buying. My cat was very ill and I was looking for something that would help me through her passing. Unfortunately this book wasn't it.

A joy to read. Anyone who is interested in Sylvia Browne (and the "afterlife" will find this delightful.

If author Mary Roach was a college professor, she'd have a zero drop-out rate. That's because when Roach tackles a subject--like the posthumous human body in her previous bestseller, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, or the soul in the winning Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife--she charges forth with such zeal, humor, and ingenuity that her students (er, readers) feel like they're witnessing the most interesting thing on Earth. Who the heck would skip that? As Roach informs us in her introduction, "This is a book for people who would like very much to believe in a soul and in an afterlife for it to hang around in, but who have trouble accepting these things on faith. It's a giggly, random, utterly earthbound assault on our most ponderous unanswered question." Talk about truth in advertising. With that, Roach grabs us by the wrist and hauls butt to India, England, and various points in between in search of human spiritual ephemera, consulting an earnest bunch of scientists, mystics, psychics, and kooks along the way. It's a heck of a journey and Roach, with one eyebrow mischievously cocked, is a fantastically entertaining tour guide, at once respectful and hilarious, dubious yet probing. And brother, does she bring the facts. Indeed, Spook's myriad footnotes are nearly as riveting as the principal text. To wit: "In reality, an X-ray of the head could not show the brain, because the skull blocks the rays. What appeared to be an X-ray of the folds and convolutions of a human brain inside a skull--an image circulated widely in 1896--was in fact an X-ray of artfully arranged cat intestines." Or this: "Medical treatises were eminently more readable in Sanctorius's day. Medicina statica delved fearlessly into subjects of unprecedented medical eccentricity: 'Cucumbers, how prejudicial,' and the tantalizing 'Leaping, its consequences.' There's even a full-page, near-infomercial-quality plug for something called the Flesh-Brush." While rigid students of theology might take exception to Roach's conclusions (namely, we're just a bag of bones killing time before donning a soil blanket) it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this impressively researched and immensely readable book. And since, as Roach suggests, each of us has only one go-round, we might as well waste downtime with something thoroughly fun. --Kim Hughes

Book Description

"Equal parts Groucho Marx and Stephen Jay Gould, both enlightening and entertaining."—Sunday Denver Post & Rocky Mountain News

The best-selling author of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers now trains her considerable wit and curiosity on the human soul. What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's that—the million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die. She begins the journey in rural India with a reincarnation researcher and ends up in a University of Virginia operating room where cardiologists have installed equipment near the ceiling to study out-of-body near-death experiences. Along the way, she enrolls in an English medium school, gets electromagnetically haunted at a university in Ontario, and visits a Duke University professor with a plan to weigh the consciousness of a leech. Her historical wanderings unearth soul-seeking philosophers who rummaged through cadavers and calves' heads, a North Carolina lawsuit that established legal precedence for ghosts, and the last surviving sample of "ectoplasm" in a Cambridge University archive. 10 illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars "We're ready to believe you".......2007-09-17

I think it was Bill Murray in Ghostbusters who, during one of their commercials, stared into the camera and said, "We're ready to believe you." In Spook, Mary Roach, having already examined dead bodies here on earth in Stiff, turns her attention to one of the oldest of all questions: Is there life after death? The book's subtitle, "Science Tackles the Afterlife," is wide of the mark. The characters between the pages of Spook, with the exception of Thomas Edison, who may have entertained some ideas about connecting to the ancestors via new found electrical capabilities, would not by and large not be recognizeable as scientists today. What you do encounter are two groups of people. One group willing to disbelieve but "prepared to believe" and anxious to demonstrate a life in the hereafter. Another group, represented largely by Mary Roach, who are willing to believe, but reasonably sceptical at the outset. What I was clearly unaware of, until reading Spook, were the sheer variety of mechanisms deployed to ascertain a life in some next phase. Reincarnation, of course, which opens the book, is well-reported, and actually contains some interesting cases, but other areas were new to me. Readers who are unfamiliar with ectoplasmic parties -- I thought Ghostbusters invented it -- and the careful efforts of technicians to determine whether the dead lose weight and to explain that loss by the departure of the soul from the departed will find in Spook an entire underworld of quirky machinations. Actually, one of my favorite passages finds Ms. Roach trying to explain why a particular "researcher" found that the dead actually gain weight immediately upon extinction. That weight gain prompts Roach to speculate that perhaps the portal to the next life is a Dairy Queen drive-through window. In a nutshell, according to Ms. Roach, this is a book for people who want desperately to believe in a life after death, but who have a difficult time accepting that possibility. By the book's conclusion you are not quite sure where Ms. Roach stands and, fortunately, she provides curious readers with a short summary chapter in which she states that, "yes," she would rather believe that not believe, "What the hell, I believe in ghosts." I don't know where Ms. Roach's gifts will next take her, She has written about the "dead," and now also about the attempt to connect with the spirits of the deceased. I'll likely follow. She brings a genuine personal touch to her work and her humor has an infectious quality about it. These are not typically waters into which I'd venture. It is to Mary Roach's credit that I can wade through them and enjoy the experience.

4 out of 5 stars a good overview that doesn't seem to want much depth.......2007-07-23

In her acknowledgements at the end of the book, Mary Roach identifies the mindset that I think makes her books (this and Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers) successful despite the seemingly superficial investigation (accompanied by self-admitted Google searches) of her subject matters: she approaches the use of bodies by science and the attempts to scientifically prove life after death from the perspective of the novice, out to learn a thing or two.

Does this make either of her two books in-depth studies? Of course not, and though her hasty conclusions at the end do her disservice, this book comes across as a pleasant read into some of the oddities involved in the world of paranormal investigation, from tests of random images that would be visible only to out-of-body spirits above the ceiling to mediums who might have second stomachs to let them cough up ectoplasm on command. For this book especially, the subject of psychics and mediums and those who are aching to prove that they are anything more than yahoos is prime material to spotlight some fools and con artists.

Of course, there are some somewhat serious endeavors to try to prove the reality of spiritual visitations, from the possibilities of electromagentism or subaural frequencies on the brain, as well as an interesting look into a legal case that seemed to confirm the possibility that a ghost could have some say over the state of his estate. While the cases in this book were not as in-depth as in Stiff, the previous book was almost scary at times for its depth. Roach seems to be treading an area that doesn't let her win very easily--if she gets into too much depth, her interest may seem a little too morbid (like listening to the head of The Darwin Awards, who seems a little too amused by these particular deaths), but if she moves quickly through some other subjects, she comes across as being a little too glib and quick to move on. As I mentioned before, the regular Google references almost sounds like product placement as well as making her research sound superficial (though it could be worse with regular Wikipedia citations), but Roach's wit and curiosity are what carry this book. She takes a rather natural skepticism, wanting some answers but willing to let people take their best shots, and more often than not they show their bias and need to excuse rather than scientific curiosity. And along the way, Roach gets to amuse with tidbits about people's conception of science and fact and the way they will bend it into something alien when trying to apply it to paranormal activity. While the side of science does not score highly either, mainly because it has been put in the position of trying to prove a negative (that there AREN'T connections being made with the other world), Roach gives some intetresting cases for both sides, and while she works with the idea that certainty is tough to have in this subject matter, she does show that some well deserved cheap shots can be taken at those who take this area a little too seriously.

2 out of 5 stars dissapointing!.......2007-06-14

I was bored with the majority of this book. Every twenty pages or so Mary Roach explores interesting themes but completely exhausts them. Toward the middle of the book (which I felt like I needed to finish) I found myself skimming through and skipping several pages at a time.

Her jokes weren't funny. Her writing was condescending. Her sidenotes gradually became more and more annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Humorous Trip Down Discovery Lane.......2007-06-11

The research presented in the book is fun and intriguing. Whether or not you agree with the author's conclusions, you have to love her flippant writing style. I purchased this book because I love her column in Reader's Digest. I certainly was not disappointed. I can't wait to read her first book.

This book has been very helpful. It is easy to read & understand. I have truelly enjoyed this book & recommend it to others wanting to learn the basics of palm reading.

5 out of 5 stars Easy terms to master.......2007-08-27

Im just another guy who bought this for the game. I use these techniques not only to impress but to weed out the ones that arent worth getting in your life. This book explains all you need to know in juvenile, easy to understand, terms. Trust me, whether you follow DeAngelo, Mystery, Gunwitch, or even Jeffries, you'll appreciate what you will learn in this book and the more you practice(sarge), the more proficient you'll become. Im almost at the glance level. Now if only I can find a book on cold reading, the two together work wonders (saw the proof in my regular wing).

5 out of 5 stars A good palm reading book is ideal.......2003-03-08

Unlike tarot, palms are hard to lose, for you have to literally be mutilated for this divination not to work. Unfortunately, palms are much harder to read than tarot cards, for the sheer number of lines and wrinkles in a person's hand. This book therefore, is a valuable ally in one's search for the truth.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2003-01-17

Wanting to learn reading techniques I bought and studied Richards book. I began by highlighting things that I thought were very important so later I could make a personal set of notes to study from. After going through the book once and looking back I noticed that about 95% of the book was highlighted. You will use everything in this book. No fluff. The illustrations are helpful and the decriptions are insightful.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2002-07-11

I can't help feeling that this book was written in a hurry. Whilst I enjoyed reading it, I thought that the illustrations (of which there were many) were poor and quite artificial. Some of the areas of palm reading were beiefly glimpsed over. It seems very disjointed and the layout of each of the marks and areas of the hand could look more classified. While most of it is in here, there must be better than this.

Loosing a 'friend' is never easy....for some, as with myself....tramatic..it has been two months.....
but with Kim Sheridan.........and the stories.....it has helped, given me hope and some peace.
I DO NOT recommend Sylvia Browne's book 'Spirit of Animals"..it is a picture book with two minutes of reading time......and you do not feel any better for it.
This book gives you hope, peace, and that just maybe you and your friend will meet again on THIS side.............

You've got to hand it to the renowned celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne--she gives it straight from the gut and really doesn't give a hoot whether you believe her. As a result, it's hard to not be captivated and convinced by her firm belief in the afterlife, or in this case, the beforelife. Her writing is most riveting when she uses her storytelling voice, relating dialogue from client sessions that include past-life stories. In fact, she opens the book with a scene in which she follows the small clues offered by an agoraphobic to help him reveal that a past-life poisoning (when he was an Aztec ruler) had been crippling his present life. Throughout the book, Brown continues to use real-life client stories to show how past-life baggage can weigh down a present life. The final chapters offer how-to lessons on conducting your own past-life regression and healing sessions. Be warned: Browne's writing sometimes sounds like the channeled writing that was popular in the late 1980's: "The miraculous gift of eternity means that the singular essence that is you will always, always exist." But readers may forgive her these lapses, as she clearly writes from heartfelt convictions rather than a stylized formula. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The one expert millions of readers have learned to trust, one of the few psychics instantly recognizable to television viewers, Sylvia Browne is back. She has proven herself, in her fifty years of working as a medium, to be the reigning queen of psychic phenomena. Here is an insightful look at how much of one's present life is informed by one's past lives, and how many health and relationship problems have their roots in unresolved past lives. From unexplained illnesses to bizarre phobias, from irrational anxieties and fears to the choice of partners, each can be traced back to past lives. Even birthmarks and recurring dreams are signs of issues from past lives. Sylvia helps readers recognize where their deep-rooted problems, fears, and hang-ups all began-and how to ultimately resolve them.

This was a great book. I have an 11 month old, so it was great being able to stop whenever I needed to. The stories were very interesting and I even started saying to my daughter everytime she fell asleep to release any negetive energy from past lives into the white light of the holy spirit. I highly recomend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Just love her!.......2007-07-19

Sylvia has once again published another helpful book. Rather than this book being alot of psychic talk, we have another "theme" going on here, which is "Tolerance". We are surrounded by so many different types of people who have many different themes in life. She goes in depth about the life purpose of these people, including yourself, and show us that we are all on a seperate journey to fullfill our themes. We are here for each other, and we were all ment to be around the people that we have, wether we like it or not. We are here for a specific reason, even the irritating ones... have some patience they are here to help too.

3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-03-27

As with all of Sylvia's books that I have read so far it kept me interested, opened my mind and made me ask questions. I feel that if anything I read makes me think then it must be good. I have made so many positive changes in my life and have found a peace I never knew existed since being touched by the works of Sylvia that it would be impossible to not see or to accept this fact.

I have enjoyed all of the books by Sylvia that I have read. This one in particular is not only fascinating but VERY helpful. All of us (because all of us have problems) should read it.

5 out of 5 stars REINCARNATION?? THIS WILL MAKE A BELIEVER OUT OF YOU..........2006-09-10

If you ever wondered about reincarnation, this book may make a believer out of you.

This book explores Sylvia's experiences as a degreed hypnotherapist who has come across many supposedly "unsolvable" cases where past life regression revealed the link to some of the baffling ills suffered by clients in this lifetime. There are many fascinating case studies, that have later been back researched and verified by historical census records and other historical public records.

Book Description

Within each of us is the voice of an inner teacher-guardian that is our link to the unseen world of Soul. Its purpose is to guide and protect us. It allows us an “all-access pass” to the vast arena of Divine intelligence, potential, and power. It is called intuition. We all have it, yet sadly, most people are disconnected from it.
Using her own turbulent yet remarkable life as a narrative, along with fascinating stories from her clients, internationally renowned intuitive counselor Colette-Baron Reid shares the deeply moving and amazing story of her journey to finally accepting, and exulting in, her extraordinary gift of intuition and foresight, which had been thirsting to be heard since she was a young child.
Over the past 17 years, Colette has amassed an international client base that spans 29 countries, while offering astonishing personal insights that many consider miraculous. She now openly and generously shares that journey in Remembering the Future, which will not only leave you filled with hope and empowerment, but will guide you in rediscovering your magical gift of intuition.
By following Colette’s Seven Spiritual Keys, you’ll experience a consciously fulfilling, creative life, filled with profound harmony and opportunity. And most important, you’ll know who you really are. . . .

1 out of 5 stars What the....?.......2007-08-17

I was so disappointed with this book, and extremely disappointed that it got 5-star reviews. If I had known that this was just a woman's personal story and NOT a guide to recovering intuition, I never would have purchased it.

The author's personal story is 3/4 of the book. THREE QUARTERS. Parts were OK, a little was interesting, but come on, I did not buy this book to read about her troubled and sordid life. I've got my own life for that, lol. I wanted a book that would help me increase my own intuition. When I finally got past her story, all that was left was a list of very basic things we all need to do in life anyway, most of which I had already done. Not one thing in this book was helpful to me at all.

Disappointed, but I'll get over it. There are a few authors out there who actually write about increasing your intuition and psychic abilities. This woman doesn't happen to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful! A MUST HAVE FOR ALL!.......2007-08-02

This is the best book written to date relating to opening your intuition.
Colette's own true story in the early part of this book IS truly inspiring, her way with words are as angelic as she. This book will become your companion for Colette takes the reader on an incredible journey of sharing her experiences, and learning and a reawakening of your soul and your intuition with so much love,The exercises she provides to open your intuition presented here are incredibly life changing .I keep finding myself returning to this book...I went to an event in Boston,Mass a few weeks ago where Colette was the co-guest,she should have been the main headliner for she made the show shine..What a vibrant, energetic, loving caring woman..after the show I was afforded the generosity of having my book signed by her(1st in line)and she didn't rush me along like other authors do,she is very, very kind, loving, patient and a beautiful lady with a magnificent soul and her energy vibrates at such a high frequency, wonderfully beautiful energy..All heart and soul and then some!
She personalized my book signing,a rarity these days. This is a must have book for everyone,I cannot state this enough.Hay House please continue with more editions, for this book is of great importance for all.Thank you Colette for one of greatest times in my life.I look forward to more books from this author and I highly recommend her meditation cd-Journey through the Chakras < 5 out of 5 stars Honest, Heartfelt, Timeless.......2007-07-31

All of these adjectives describe Colette Baron-Reids candid, heartwarming book Remembering the Future: The Path to Recovering Intuition.

Colette tackles the slippery job of detailing some heady, gossamer-type topics with casual aplomb, and girl-next-door humor.

She has an inviting voice that encourages both greenhorn and veteran intuitives to venture out into new horizons of perspectives within the field of soul-perception.

I gather that one of Colette's objectives in writing this book was to restore the arena of psychic ability/intuitive strengths back to its original organic grace. She has succeeded remarkably in achieving this goal.

It takes guts to be as candid as she has been in the telling of her journey - kudos Colette, for expressing yourself with class and for your contribution to de-mystifying a much misunderstood arena.

5 out of 5 stars "Awakening Intuition".......2007-07-25

Colette shares her experiences that led to her surrendering to what she already knew to be true. She was blessed with the gift of intuition, and her service was to accept it and share it. The first part of the book is her story. I enjoyed reading her story, it's really interesting. Just because she's intuitive (she prefers not to be labeled psychic because of the stigma that goes along with it.)doesn't mean that she's had things easy. There were plenty of times when her intuition was blocked and she experienced some painful events. She talks about how it left her and when it returned. And, being ituitive never guaranteed that she'd always make the right choices.

The second part of the book is about unblocking (recovering) your intuition. The remaining chapters are on 'The Seven Spiritual Keys' -advice and excercises you can do to put yourself in a better position to access/ recover your intuition. This section of the book is what I'll be re-reading and studying. I found so much good information here, not just about how to be more intuitive, but how to be more spiritual which seems to automatically strengthen your intuition.

Colette says that intuition is "a natural sixth sense that is bestowed on everyone -Without exception." It's just that we're all at very different levels with it. She likens it to her being in the olympic category. (While I think most of all the rest of us are somewhere around the high school gym level.)

I learned a lot from this book, and am looking forward to studying/ excercising the seven spiritual keys.
