Book Description
Typical books about preserving garden produce nearly always assume that modern kitchen gardeners will boil or freeze their vegetables and fruits. Yet here is a book that goes back to the futurecelebrating traditional but little-known French techniques for storing and preserving edibles in ways that maximize flavor and nutrition.
Translated into English, and with a new foreword by Deborah Madison, this book deliberately ignores freezing and high-temperature canning in favor of methods that are superior because they are less costly and more energy-efficient.
As Eliot Coleman says in his foreword to the first edition, Food preservation techniques can be divided into two categories: the modern scientific methods that remove the life from food, and the natural `poetic' methods that maintain or enhance the life in food. The poetic techniques produce... foods that have been celebrated for centuries and are considered gourmet delights today.
Preserving Food Without Freezing or Canning offers more than 250 easy and enjoyable recipes featuring locally grown and minimally refined ingredients. It is an essential guide for those who seek healthy food for a healthy world.

Amazing Book!.......2007-10-09
This book provides great information on traditional food preservation techniques that are fast being forgotten. The recipes yield some incredible tastes--try the pickled garlic--and practical ways to extend the life of your garden produce with its beneficial nutrients intact. Definitely a must for the serious organic gardener!
Useful information.......2007-08-25
This book is an excellent source of information and techniques. It is clearly written and the recipes are really easy to follow. A must have for any serious home preserver.
Excellent Recipes.......2007-06-08
This book has just what I wanted: Some simple, low-cost, low-energy ways of preserving food. I will be using these techniques extensively this summer and fall.
A 'must' for collections strong in either cooking or ecological living........2007-06-04
The usual book on preserving garden produce assumes boiling or freezing vegetables or fruits will take place - but Preserving Food Without Freezing or Canning: Traditional Techniques Using Salt, Oil, Sugar, Alcohol, Vinegar, Drying, Cold Stage, and Lactic Fermentation uses little-known French techniques for storing and preserving edibles, is newly translated into English for American audiences, and uses less costly methods featuring locally grown, minimally refined fruits and vegetables. It's a cut above your usual 'how to preserve' title and a 'must' for collections strong in either cooking or ecological living.
Thrifty In The Truest Sense.......2007-05-14
This is a really good reference, with discussions of fermenation and brining, that go beyond the superficial. Good recipies as well, we are now enjoying our salted lemons in salads and in other dishes. This would be in the top ten I would recommend for getting by in a pinch. Also they, for the most part require little or no gas or electric use.

incredible.......2007-06-02
Naomi Shihab Nye has a relationship with words and Emotions that few people achieve in their life, regardless of their age. She is my favorite poet as well as my favorite author and I have never dislike one of her poems.
A Maze Me is no exception. Every poem sends a strong message or fills you with a feeling or new idea. Each poem is written so beautifully that no illustration is needed, as it probes curiosity and imaginitive explanations. In my opinion, Naomi Shihab Nye is very philosophical, and this thinking appears through metaphors that are evenly distributed throughout her literature.
A Maze Me is an incredible set of poems and your life will not be complete until you have read this.
Color Me Amazed.......2006-06-27
This book by the sublime Naomi Shihab Nye is subtitled "Poems for Girls," but I don't think that this charming book should be restricted to one gender. I certainly chuckled, oohed, and aahed a number of times as I read through it. (Still, it WOULD make a great gift for the young girl in your life.)
Shihab Nye has a generosity of spirit that shines through her poetry like a twinkle in a kindly aunt's eye. Here is a little somethin'-somethin' to whet your appetite (excerpted from "Ringing"):
"Now, when I hear an ice-cream truck chiming its bells, I fly
Even if I'm not hungry -- just to watch it pass.
Mailmen with their chime of dogs barking
up and down the street are magic too.
They are all bringers.
I want to be a bringer.
I want to drive a truck full of eggplants down the smallest street. I want to be someone making music with my coming."
The Poet in All of Us.......2006-05-24
Once I read Naomi Shihab Nye's introduction, I felt I was about to turn the pages of something very special. I was right. This unique collection of poems gives the reader a chance to look at familiar life in a new way. Full of nostalgia, intimate and humorous, tender and tearful, this is a book I would love to underline and memorize. I look forward to writing in my own notebook, trying to find the poet in me.
Richie's Picks: A Maze Me.......2005-04-29
"Ringing
A baby, I stood in my crib to hear
the dingy-ding of a vegetable truck approaching.
When I was bigger, my mom took me out
to the street
to meet the man who rang the bell and
he tossed me
a tangerine...
...the first thing I ever caught. I thought
he was
a magic man.
My mom said there used to be milk trucks too.
She said,
Look hard, he'll be gone soon. And she was right.
He disappeared.
Now when I hear an ice-cream truck chiming
its bells, I fly.
Even if I'm not hungry--just to watch it pass.
Mailmen with their chime of dogs barking
up and down the street are magic too.
They are all bringers.
I want to be a bringer.
I want to drive a truck full of eggplants down
the smallest street.
I want to be someone making music
with my coming."
And so she is. And so she does.
A great joy that accompanies a new book of poems by Naomi Shihab Nye is the expectation that she will begin reappearing at national conferences and conventions, reading aloud from her latest collection. The good feeling I've taken away with me from her past workshops is about as close as I get to church these days.
A MAZE ME contains seventy-two of Naomi's latest poems. Younger teens will find these pieces easy to read and relate to. Hopefully, many will be intrigued and inspired by Naomi's ability to create poetry from such sources as a car manual, a newspaper article, a taco sign, "the hair on the head of the girl in front of me in school," Julia Child's patting potatoes, or a vapor trail "X" that a pair of planes have inadvertently left in the sky.
Being a book of "Poems for Girls" there are also the requisite handful of "longing" poems:
"High Hopes
It wasn't that they were so
high, exactly,
they were more
low-down,
close-to-the-ground,
I could rub them
the way you touch a cat
that rubs against your ankles
even if he isn't yours.
So yes I feel lonely without them.
Now that I know the truth,
that I only dreamed someone liked me,
the cat has curled up in a bed of leaves
against the house and I still have to do
everything I had to do before
without a secret hum
inside."
Despite being a guy, I really enjoyed the images and memories conjured up by these poems. Whether reading "Visiting My Old Kindergarten Teacher, Last Day of School," "Turtle" (about the persistent creature that had walked for twenty years), or "Across the Aisle" (about the little girl who coughed "every 30 seconds for seven whole hours" on a transatlantic flight), I've repeatedly interrupted Rosemary's reading on the couch and Shari's grading papers at the kitchen table in order to have an audience with whom to share the poems aloud.
"Big Head, Big Face
(what my brother said to me)
If your head had been smaller
maybe you woulda had less thoughts in it,
maybe you wouldn't have so many troubles.
This is just a guess but seems to me
like a little drawer only hold a few spoons
and you can always find the one you need
while a big drawer jammed with tongs
strings corks junky stuff receipts birthday cards
you never gonna look at
scrambled and mixed so one day
you open that drawer
poke your hand in and big knife go
through your palm
you didn't even know a knife was IN there,
well, that's why I think
it might not be so bad to have a little head
with just a few thoughts few memories few hopes
maybe if only one little one came true
that be enough for you."
Luckily for us, Naomi Shihab Nye has carefully sifted through that drawer to provide an entertaining assortment of poetic images, thoughts, stories, and yoga poses.
Book Description
Anatomy of a Conflict explores the cultural aspects of the fierce dispute between activist loggers and environmentalists over the fate of Oregon's temperate rain forest. Centred on the practice of old-growth logging and the survival of the northern spotted owl, the conflict has lead to the burning down of ranger stations, the spiking of trees, logging truck blockades, and countless demonstrations and arrests.
Satterfield shows how the debate about the forest is, at its core, a debate about the cultural make-up of the Pacific Northwest. To talk about forests is to talk about culture, whether the discussion is about scientific explanations of conifer forests, activists' grassroots status and their emotional attachment to land, or the implications of past people's land use for future forest management. An engaging ethnographic study, this book emphasizes the historical roots and contemporary emergence of identity movements as a means for challenging cultural patterns. It makes a significant contribution to culture- and identity-driven theories of human action in the context of social movements and environmental studies.

Customer Reviews:
A wealth of information.......2000-09-22
I've been amazed at the amount of information packed into this small book. In addition to the handy lists of information, such as the list of flowers that will produce seed for birds, there are also amusing and inspiring anectdotes sprinkled throughout the book. Definitely worth having in your library!
A wonderful addition to the birdlover's library!.......2000-04-04
John Terres provides fascinating insight into the life of songbirds and how to attract them to your home and garden. Beyond mere identification, the descriptions of individual bird behavior greatly enhance the birdlover's understanding of their feathered friends. Included are easy-to-follow suggestions for making your own bird feeders, houses, baths and other sundries, and references to other intriguing books on living with birds. I would highly recommend this book, more for the depth of information than it's ease of use as an identification tool.

Originally announced as 2nd Foreign Legion Paratroop Regiment back in Fall of 2000, this book never came out.
It is now available and readers will see unprecedented detail and information on one of France's premier special forces units.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2007-07-19
I just got this book in the mail the other day and it is great. It covers in basic detail the entire history of the paras starting in Vietnam. It has many very good photos as well. My only complaint would be the sometimes poor translation from french. But the book is well laid out. From the start it tells of each war/battle/operation that the paras have been in after that it lists all of the specailist units within the paras as well as all of the weapon systems employed by them. Another detail I found interesting was the break down of the countries of orgin and number of men in the paras as of 2001. Over all a very good "table" book.
FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION EXCELLANCE.......2006-03-28

Customer Reviews:
Excellent read--- worth every page.......2005-06-04
Douglas Porch's inside view of the Foreign Legion in great detail keeps the reader enthralled through every page. It's about time this legendary fighting force got the credit it deserves. From campaigning in colonial Africa to the jungles of Tonkin through two World Wars, the Foreign Legion needed someone to tell of their bloody, honorable, and glory-filled history.
A Lot of Legion Here: Really a Social History of the Legion.......2004-12-01
If you are looking for a complete history of the Legion with almost every hopeless engagement listed and the details of "faire Cameron" (the propensity of the legion to battle in hopeless battles to the death, then you may be a little disspointed. I say "a little" because this book is really a great read, but it is NOT a military history.
It is strong on some aspects of the campaignes such as the early ones in Algeria, Spain, Madagascar, Mexico and latterally in Indochina and Algeria, but it does miss whole parts of campaigns in French North Africa and is a little sparse on WWI and WWII in my opinion(especially the sterling actions of the French and the legion at Cassino in 1944).
This book is really a massive social history of the Legion. Its place in the hearts and minds of the French People, the legionnaire, and how the legionnaire was viewed by those whose lands he soldiered in and fought against. As such there is a very clever interweaving of the statistical information on numbers of recruits, dessertions, composition of forces. Porch uses the very much reoccuring theme of dessertion in La Legion to such an extent that dessertion in a sense defined the legion -- you were not considered a true legionnaire until you had tried to desert at least once.
He analyses the mentality of brutality that seemed endemic in this force and although he finds it repugnant at times he does see it as necessarily standing outside the experiences of French Line Regiments.
Another theme is the supposed reason for enlistment. For the majority of recruits over the entire time of La Legion, the main reason for people joining was to mainly for escape and the espirit du corps. This was augmented over time after recruits got in and they fought really only for the sake of fighting and protecting the name of regiment. In times like WWI and WWII when ideals motivated recruits, the traditional mindset of the legionaire often came into comflict with those of idealists. Therefore the effectiveness of the recruits may become compromised.
I particularly enjoyed the frightening detail of the massive sweeps in Indochina and the feeling of absolute hopelessness in the horrific infantry battles in the jungles. Whole regiments getting wiped out in forgotten battles.
This is a massive read. Porch is a solid historian and writes very well. I would read other of his books gladly.

One of the best.......2004-09-13
I've read 3 books on the French Foreign Legion. Of the 3, this one was the finest. It had good info, captivating narrative, and good editing (no mistakes). Since I've read Porch's book, I ordered the other 2 Legion books, but they did not measure up. I'll be reading Mcgorman's book soon and I'll write a review on that one. This book is an excellent buy and very entertaining.
