I liked, but it could be better.......2007-03-25
I liked this book.
it presented many ideas and a right pragmatic approach to test a trading system.
I found tough the statistics part, but it's not an author's fault: it's statistics.
in the final part I found many repetition (many pages might be saved just writing: " hey, for this system we apply the same said at pag. xyz..").
Only two things remained a mistery to me (but I'm not much intellingent..): why didn't the author make any test for longer horizons? in the end, the strategies never approached a longer term trading strategy: usually the trades last few days.
maybe it's not worth? the author doesn't tell us
ah, and it's not an encyclopedia: why did he choose this name?
this is the second mistery...
Too Technical for Me.......2006-11-05
The Encyclopedia of Trading Strategies is well written and is a good book if you are looking for something very technical and mechanical. I was disappointed with the book. I thought it would offer chart set ups or set ups per technical indicators. Instead, it offered codes, etc for setting up mechanical systems.
Research oriented traders, read this one!!.......2005-12-27
Wow! For the research oriented person, this book is great! Not
only does it go over large variety of different approaches
to the commodities market, but the authors let you know the
pitfalls and traps to various methods of evaluating the markets.
The book is written in a concise manner that allows quick naviagation
and further study of any desired topics. The authors have
documented their sources well and really covered a lot of ground!
A *must* read for traders! *AND* I was interested in
the companion CD, called the number listed on the web site
and got to speak with one of the authors! He was very helpful
and answered all my questions right away! You can't beat
that for service with a book!
Best Book on Building Trading Strategies.......2005-12-19
This is by far the most complete and advanced work I've read on the subject. However, read Robert Pardo's "Design, Testing, and Optimization of Trading Systems" first if you are new to backtesting.
A must read for strategy traders.......2005-09-07
This is a good book. Everyone who is thinking about trading and/or is trading already should get a copy of the book. There isn't any "holy grail" strategy in this book, by the way. Rather, this book is about teaching how all these different indicators have performed under strict test conditions and unveils some of the mysteries about different strategies that people have talked about over the years. IMO, the author's work can be the basis of a great system. The first step has already been taken by the author, and you just have to elaborate it to add your flair and style. Happy trading!

Excellent Reference.......2007-07-20
You can read this book straight through as an anthropology primer or use it as a reference for anthropological concepts. It is excellent for either use.
Individual entries are tight and complete and include references throughout the text to other salient entries and a very useful reading/sources list at the end.
My only real criticism of the text is that sometimes the bias of the author towards the Gould/Lewontin viewpoint shines a little too brightly. (Their critics maintain that both Gould and Lewontin espouse theories that have more to do with their politically correct beliefs than good science.) Without some context to the furor over sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, the reader may be prematurely swayed the author's favored viewpoint.
Otherwise, I found it to be an excellent reference.

The alphabetical listing of entries and the double-column format generates an interesting clustering of related concepts. It also happens to juxtapose seemingly unrelated concepts with common root meaning. The encyclopedic explanations are pithy and their range is global. Highlights for me are 1) the references to journal articles and texts included with many of the entries, 2) useful cross-referencing within the book, 3) the appendix of reference books, and 4) best of all, the historical vignettes. Author, please, write a book of 25,000 historical vignettes to illuminate science in light of our humanity.

This book is a comprehensive tool that will be useful to a variety of users. The layout of the book is easy to use and the definitions are easy to understand. It is an excellent resource for information.

A great resource on fear.......2007-07-30
As a psychologist specializing in treating fears and phobias, I found this book really interesting. The author is highly acclaimed in psychological circles to do with anxiety. The book is unique in that it could be used both by therapists and the general public. It's easy to read style and also being set out in a simple alphabetical format, would be helpful in diagnosing patients, and also make for great read for the everyday person in understanding more about the amazing world of fears and phobias, a topic that affects us all.

i found this book to be immensely helpful, and i find myself returning to it again and again.
A Multi-purpose Referancnce Book.......1999-12-10
While I am not a professional in this feild I have found this book remarkably help full in in understanding what these human behaviours are, the theories behind them, some of the medications that are/have been used in some cases and a few of the clinical studies that have been done in this feild.
The material is written in laymens terns and is arranged alphabtically. It would be of assistance to anyone wanting a better understanding of the feild or then student who is just starting their studies in college in this feild.
In my case the book has been and still is used in a most unusal way. I am referee for war gaming and have successfully used this referance with my players to prevent "perfect" characters from existing. The players in turn become so drawned to the book they wind up reading it and learning about this whole area!
This book would have recieved 5 stars except for the fact that the material is all listed as one listing: clinical, definitions, and Pharmacology (sp?). The book would have been better off as one book with several distinct sections.
