Book Description

It's an age-old question that has stumped the great minds of history: What is the meaning of life? In his hilarious and uplifting style, best-selling author Bradley Trevor Greive finally provides the answer: Figure out what you love and do it.Illustrated with playful photographs of animals, BTG's insightful prose again hits his target straight on. He muses about why we're here and our greater purpose in the grand scheme of things. His informal style provides a refreshing counterpoint to what has always been one of life's big debates. For example, when it comes to discovering your passion, BTG writes, "First, no one else will tell you about it-it's just like walking around all day with a sign on your back that says KICK ME.The Meaning of Life is a witty, thought-provoking book that makes an ideal gift for anyone who's seeking their true purpose-and wants to laugh along the way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful.......2007-01-10

Excellent selection of photographs that are well matched to the witty prose. I recommend this book for anyone who needs a cheering up and a hearty laugh.
Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Insight into the big question in a roundabout and gentle way.......2006-09-17

This book is a linear commentary on the little things in life. Each page and comment has a picture of an animal that adds meaning to the comment -almost always in a make you smile or outright laugh kind of way.

It is a gentle and sensitive light hearted book that everyone will enjoy and gain something from. Of course it doesn't answer the big question, it just gives you food for thought about it.

The only minus about this book is that all the pictures are in black and white. Color would have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-28

I love this book. Everytime I read it I get something else from it. My kids like it to because of the great animal pictures. I have let co-workers borrow it and they had to buy their own. Wonderful for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars REAL AND REALLY FUNNY.......2006-03-17

THIS BOOK IS SO REAL, AND SO FUNNY, I AM NOW BUYING IT FOR GIFTS, ANYONE WHO READS THE ENTIRE BOOK, WILL WANT ONE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BOOK, I WILL BE PASSING IT ALONG THE WAY....

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and funny.......2006-03-15

Book Description

The Wish List is a quirky little gift book that sounds an irresistible call to get out there and start living. In the same chunky format as the authorfs bestselling 14,000 Things to Be Happy About, The Wish List presents a compulsively readable list of unexpected goals. There are wishes large--retrace Odysseus' route around the Mediterranean--and wishes small--find a genuine arrowhead. There are artistic wishes--write a sonnet. Athletic wishes--learn to box. Practical wishes--master the rudiments of plumbing. Whimsical wishes--become a taster at Ben & Jerry's. And fantasy wishes--live in a Venetian palazzo. The Wish List is meant to plant seeds, jog us out of complacency, and articulate unspoken desires.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful To Keep Going Back To..........2006-07-30

This book made me realize two things when I received it in 1997. First, I need to remember how many things I have accomplished in my life. Second, what an accomplishment or "wish" is to one person is not to me. I define my own success.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely love it!!!.......2006-05-26

I bought this book about 5 years ago and have had so much fun reading it. I know I'll never get to do all of the "wishes" but I do check them off as I complete them. I would love to see how many I can achieve in the next 40+ years. It's a great book when you're bored to just pick up and open to any page. My kids have fun looking at it with me too. This is one of the greatest books I've ever opened!

5 out of 5 stars great ideas.......2005-12-13

I have been keeping for sometime a notebook in which I write things that I want to do in my life from sailing, visiting Italy, and writing a magazine article to eating less fried foods, and stop worrying for once. I have about 500 entries and its a great feeling when I can slash them off after they are completed. I bought Kipfer's 14,000 Things to be Happy About and I liked the lists of things she mentions that make you happy since it was so diverse and amusing. When I saw The Wish list, I thought perfect for me because it was just lists of wishes like that of my notebook. I like this book a lot because its simply ideas and wishes that I would never have thought about. From simple wishes such as join a health food co-op, learn to play the piano, stand up for a friend to the challenging, have dinner with former governers, hike the Appalachian, sit next to Jack Nicholsen at a Lakers game, this book has tons of ideas. I have added many entries from it and have never failed to be entertained by Kipfer's ideas. This is a small thick book that would fit well in a stocking, on your desk, and in good reading spots such as an office or even a bathroom. I love to pull it out and pencil off or circle entries that I have done or wish to do.

5 out of 5 stars Makes A Great Graduation Gift.......2005-09-13

I have been giving this book as graduation gifts for several years and the "thank yous" I've received for every one each say how much they LOVE this book and can't wait to use it.

5 out of 5 stars Mid life crisis.......2005-06-21

I bought this for my friend who was suffering from a mid-life crisis. By marking the things he had done in red, he was able to see how many great experiences he had had in his life. More importantly, he saw how many more there were to look forward to experiencing.

1 out of 5 stars Suze Orman's Protection Portfolio.......2006-08-31

I found this product extremely disappointing and not worth my time or money for several reasons: 1) the audio is condescending and difficult to avoid, why not just let me read it if that is my preference? 2) you can't print out the tutorial pages so you have to go back and forth to refer to them again, which can sometimes be several screens back, 3) you cannot enlarge the screen image to fit your computer screen or move it to the side if you want to open another program to get information to fill out the Orman requirements. Being able to enlarge the screen would be a great benefit for me as I have poor eyesight-- which is the very reason I bought a 20" screen, 4) Suze Orman is on every screen. She's attractive but is spending too much time promoting herself over developing a good product, 5) you can not change the typeface from Courier (Times Roman would be nice) or change the page margins. The final document looks like it was produced in the 1920s. 6) when you print out the draft documents there are inexplicable holes in some of the paragraphs. They are aware of this problem (once they finally answered my email inquiry) but don't seem to think it is important to fix before releasing the product for sale. Why should I have to get to the end of the program before finding this out? 7) you can't continue to the next screen without hitting the "continue" button. Give me a break and let me press my return button instead of having to move my cursor around. The whole program seems to be a protoype to test on us unsuspecting customers.

2 out of 5 stars It messed up my printer.......2006-07-26

The CD looks okay, and then when you go print the documents it completely messes up my printer, to the point that I wasted an entire new package of paper and still cannot print anything on my printer.

1 out of 5 stars Get the Suze Orman Will & Trust kit instead.......2005-03-10

Dear Amazon Customers: Are you surprised that I myself have given my own product a one star rating? Dont be for you know I am always honest with you. Please be aware that at the time when this product was created (which was years ago now) that at that time it was great! It was the best the technology could offer at a price that everyone could afford. However since that time I have totally been able to 1000% improve it with the latest version which is under the title Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit. I do not want you to waste your hard earned money on this version when for the same amount of money you can have the latest and the greatest. The new Will and Trust Kit answers all the criticisms in the reviews on this page and even more that needed to be addressed. This old version is browser based so you cannot save your information for security reasons, the new version on the WILL and TRUST KIT is on a CD ROM that can be downloaded onto your computer. This allows you to then give the disc to a friend or family member for them to download etc. So one kit can serve the entire family. The Will and Trust Kit not only has the CD ROM but it also has ten electronic books on the CD itself along with automatic updates of all the forms, so when changes happen you can for free get what you need to know. The new kit allows you to simply answer questions and it picks the forms you most likely should have and then fills in the information from your answers directly into those forms. The old version does not do any of this. The Will and Trust kit has the trust lawyer Janet Dobrovolny ( my trust lawyer who created this kit) verbally taking you through your forms via the audio format and you also can print out the directions and or read and listen to them on screen. There are over 50 forms on the new version, over 90 weblinks and 15 calculators. Please note: You DO NEED internet access to make the most of the updating process of the new Will and Trust Kit. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is I want you to get the most for your money and this old version of the Protection Portfolio, the page you are currently on, will not give you that but Suze Ormans Will and Trust Kit will. I would love if Amazon took this old version off all together and we have asked and asked them to do so, but that is not how they work so what to do, but now you know what I think. Thank you for taking time to read this. Suze Orman

1 out of 5 stars Good book, Poor Software.......2004-11-23

While the information in the book was informative, I'm surprised at the poor quality of the software used to generate forms. The software does not allow you to electronically save (And modify) the forms - you must print them immediately. Information does not transfer from one form to the next, you must retype information endlessly. Was most surprised that someone of her prominence wouldn't seek out a better software vendor.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value/40 Forms/PC & Macintosh Compatible.......2004-03-01

"Please take the necessary steps today to protect your tomorrows." ~Suze Orman

I was amazed at how much you can get these days for twenty dollars. This packet has one book filled with form samples and information, A CD-ROM with forms for various documents and two instructional CDs.

Suze Orman has created this protection portfolio so you can easily create a Will, a Revocable Living Trust or even a Cohabitation Agreement. She explains the most important documents that everyone must have and then explains how compiling these documents ahead of time will help prevent worry and stress if the unexpected occurs.

You will find forms and websites for the following information:

Credit Report/Card Documents
Important Personal Documents
Home Ownership Documents
Personal Insurance Documents
Social Security Documents
Retirement Plan Documents
Investment Documents
Estate Planning Documents

The book is divided up into 11 main chapters. The list of how long to keep various documents was very interesting. Suze shows you how to get rid of financial clutter all while organizing your documents. Then, she shows you how to get credit reports or file complaints with a Credit Bureau. Chapter three delves into Personal Documents. Here you can collect documents listed in the Important Personal Documents list. Chapter four deals with Home Ownership.

Then on to documents about automobiles, recreational vehicles and boats. Chapter six delves into the area of Personal Insurance Policies and Records. Chapter seven explains social security statements and cards. Chapter eight explains Retirement. Investments, Estate Planning Documents and Tax records complete this comprehensive book.

In the back of the book you will find a unique "Protection Portfolio Filing System." You can order additional items for about the same price as this portfolio.

3 out of 5 stars the habit change workbook. How to break bad habits and form good ones.......2007-04-01

So far sense i have been using the book it has been somewhat helpfull. But i still yet have got to put the techniques to full use.So i think there is still more i can get from it.

4 out of 5 stars developing better habits.......2007-03-09

I have not started to use this book yet but it really looks like a program that works if you work it- to paraphrase a 12-step mantra. I will have to form the habit of daily review of habits and I haven't broken through that barrier yet, but I further reading in the book should help with that. The program suggestions are very concrete and engaging. What is sometimes hard for me is remembering I don't have to understand all my motivations and dark corners to begin to change things. But I've come to see that is true.

4 out of 5 stars unnecessary for simple habits.......2006-05-29

This book will be helpful to people with complex lifestyle bad habits such as overeating, gambling, and procrastination. But, for breaking simpler, unconscious, behavioral bad habits, there is an extremely simple method, which is not covered, and for which no book is necessary. These are habits such as biting nails, pulling hair, talking to yourself, picking skin, touching acne, cursing aloud, where it is difficult to quit since you don't think not to do it until after the fact; i.e. there's no moment of deliberate decision before you engage in the behavior.

The method is as follows: First, it is probably necessary to consciously make some kind of effort to stop the habit---e.g. biting your nails. So if you realize you're about to bite them, or have just started biting them, then consciously prevent yourself or stop immediately. But, as everyone knows, the willpower method by itself is usually unsuccessful. The idea is to choose some kind of personal forfeit as "punishment" for the behavior in question. Then, whenever you realize that you have just bitten your nails, you perform the forfeit. (Of course it's necessary to consciously realize you've bitten your nails, after the fact; but one usually does realize this when one is trying to break the habit---the problem is you don't realize it until it's already too late.)

The forfeit can be anything that is (1) something you would typically NOT want to do at random times on a moment's notice; (2) not so onerous that you might actually refuse to do it from sheer laziness; (3) not, in itself, potentially habit-forming; (4) can be done anywhere, at any time. Examples of forfeits I have tried or considered are: (a) going to a dictionary, finding a word that is new to you, and learning its meaning; (b) multiplying two two-digit numbers together in your head; (c) choosing a random date and calculating its day of the week in your head (using Conway's Doomsday algorithm); (d) making yourself listen to a particular song you hate, in its entirety; (e) doing ten pushups. Although I haven't tried it, (a) is nice since it has the side-effect of improving yourself in some way while breaking the habit; but it requires that you always keep a dictionary handy.

The single most important thing in applying this method is not to cheat and not to delay. That is, every time you bite your nails---even if you just started to---immediately perform the forfeit (or at least do so within a minute or so). Do not delay, or "pretend to yourself that you did the forfeit", or save up multiple forfeits and do them all at once, later, when it's more convenient.

You will quickly find that the sneaky brain becomes aware of the fact that every time it unconsciously decides you should bite your nails, your conscious mind will come in and make it do some work it doesn't particularly want to. This makes you become aware of the habit before you actually do it, and gives you time to choose not to. After some time, you will stop wanting to at all and the habit is broken. (This method also works for instilling positive habits, e.g. brushing your teeth within ten minutes of dinner---just do the forfeit when you realize it has been more than ten minutes and you haven't yet brushed your teeth.)

This cure does not, of course, address any root causes of the habit.

Hope this helps and makes buying a book unnecessary for some people. Others, who want to change more complex behaviors may find The Habit Change Workbook a valuable resource. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars If you're serious.......2006-04-12

I don't know if I'm obsessive compulsive or not, but I have a few habits that I engage in that I believe cause me guilt and anxiety and that I cannot quite get a handle on. I first checked this book out at the library and found myself quickly wanting to photocopy most of the pages. So, ultimately, I bought the book.

The book is full of worksheets and record charts - it seems 50/50 in terms of lecture/practical application. If you are into that, fine. At first, that put me off. I didn't want to write that much stuff down. But when I got further into the nuts and bolts of changing the habit, the pages I wanted to copy became greater and greater because the ideas and exercises were so thought-provoking and led me to eye-openers and ideas of how to change my life that I couldn't seem to grasp before.

I don't know if I'll use this system step-by-step, but the good thing about the book is that I believe it still works and is an invaluable tool for self-examination whether you follow it that way or not.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the beginning was a bit tedious for an impatient self-starter like myself and to warn those who don't want to do any self-examination and just want a lecture to check this out at the library first. Otherwise, I really think that you cannot lose by having this book and I'm glad I'll have it in my library for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Personal Lifesaver!.......2002-03-09

I am the webowner of Mental Health Today.

This excellent workbook will teach you how to deal with behaviors such as nail biting, skin picking, trichotillomania and addiction in regards to shopping, tv, internet, and gambling. Also focuses on changes in sleep habits, health & fitness, and relationship problems. They state the book can assist with obsessive compulsive disorder with further help.

For chemical dependency issues, you are advised to seek professional help first and then use the workbook for overall lifestyle changes.

This workbook could not have come at a better time for me. I've been working out for 6 months and out of the blue it is no longer fun and I'm now beginning to gently slide into my old workaholism pattern. I know that my old gym schedule needs to be changed and at the same time my work load at home has increased dramatically and I feel lost on how to organize my life and get myself motivated to get back to the gym and fight my workaholism.

The workbook comes with just exactly what I need. Help in changing my thoughts and requires me to come up with a plan of action. For me, it has been a lifesaver and the timing could not have been more perfect. I recommend it!

Book Description

An inspiring account of one woman's successful mission to lose six dress sizes and change her life for good

Any woman who's ever been a “fat girl” knows: the label sticks in your mind, regardless of how much weight you lose. Twenty years ago, at 5'4" and 185 pounds, Lisa Delaney was despondent over diets that never worked and disappointed by her dull job and lack of a love life. Fortunately, a late-night epiphany involving a half-gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream convinced her that becoming a former fat girl—in body and spirit—was the key to creating a life she truly loved.

Today, seventy pounds lighter, Lisa is a successful writer at a national magazine. She is married to a man she loves. And she wears a size two.

Eye-opening yet refreshingly accessible, Secrets of a Former Fat Girl reveals the seven secrets of Delaney's success, exploring how shifting from wannabe former fat girl to actual former fat girl is as much about seeing yourself as a confident, secure, desirable woman as it is about achieving an ideal weight. Featuring concrete advice to help readers drop two, four (or more!) dress sizes and re-imagine their own best lives, this book offers the strategies and support to help them effect real change once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious - Hit the nail on the Head!.......2007-10-04

I will be straight with you: this book is not going to ring true for everyone. You have to have "fat girl programming", as defined by Delaney, to understand. If not, don't bother. But if you do, this is so helpful because: 1) SOMEONE out there knows exactly what you are thinking - seriously, 2) that same person has come up with tricks and strategies to "reprogram" yourself, and 3) she's hilarious!

I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Really Hit Home.......2007-09-12

I am a 71-year old, very obese lady with thyroid problems. I have been on every diet under the sun and totally destroyed both my thyroid and mebabolism - lost a lot and then gained back even more. I almost gave up as I was always tired and it hurt to do anything let alone walk, and I felt so guilty about the food I was eating and the quantity, but could not stop. I cannot diet any more - my body refuses to cooperate. However, I bought a new motorized treadmill about 3 weeks ago and am trying to get motivated to use it on a regular basis.

I received this book yesterday, and when she talks about doing exercise in increments, it was just what I wanted to hear. I managed to increase both my speed and time today as I didn't look at the total time I hoped to work out, but getting through 5 minute increments. I cannot tell you how much better I feel when I got done. I can hardly wait to read the rest of the book.

I'm sorry that people think the author is feeling sorry for herself, but those of us who have dealt with extreme obesity appreciate the fact that she has gone through what we are encountering every day. It is hard to change but if it makes sense and someone has been successful, I want to know what lead up to their recovery and how they handled it. I am so happy to have found this book.

2 out of 5 stars Borrow it from the Library.......2007-08-24

I was inspired by the title - but the book left little to be desired. It is poorly organized, doesn't offer substantive advice and is rather glib. (I did not give it one star becuase I liked the title.)

I suggest borrowing it from your local library before purchasing it. Frankly that is where my copy will be going soon.

If you are looking for actual advice - read Geneen Roth.

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING!.......2007-08-08

I love, love, love this book!! It was so inspiring and the techniques she describes are wonderful! A definite MUST BUY!! I will read this book over and over!! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Someone Who's Helpful!.......2007-07-11

I first discovered this book through a link on MSN that led me to Ms. Delaney's web-site. To be certain, I've read (or rather, attempted to read)several self-help books on this subject and never could quite resign myself to them because you could tell the writer(s) didn't understand. They'd never fought this battle before, much less won. But she has. Just from reading her blog I could tell, this woman knows what it is and what it means to be a fat girl. To struggle with the inner demons that drive us. She fought (and still fights) those demons and she won. Has continued to win for 20 years.

Even better, this book reads more like a novel than a self-help book. Ms. Delaney shares her personal weight-loss story like one girlfriend might to another. There's no holds barred, no secret she didn't reveal and all wrapped up in a fun and understandable voice. Not only does she share her personal story and how she clawed her way out of being a fat girl to a former fat girl, but she gives you realistic tips on how you can conquer the fat girl mentality yourself. Tips on how to trick yourself, how to drive yourself and yes, how to control the food that's been controlling you.

Needless to say, I'm a big fan of Ms. Delaney and her book. It may take me a few more reads to really get it to all sink in but I know this time I've found the right book.

First published in 1917, On Growth and Form was at once revolutionary and conservative. Scottish embryologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860-1948) grew up in the newly cast shadow of Darwinism, and he took issue with some of the orthodoxies of the day--not because they were necessarily wrong, he said, but because they violated the spirit of Occam's razor, in which simple explanations are preferable to complex ones. In the case of such subjects as the growth of eggs, skeletons, and crystals, Thompson cited mathematical authority: these were matters of "economy and transformation," and they could be explained by laws governing surface tension and the like. (He doubtless would have enjoyed the study of fractals, which came after his time.) In On Growth and Form, he examines such matters as the curve of frequency or bell curve (which explains variations in height among 10-year-old schoolboys, the florets of a daisy, the distribution of darts on a cork board, the thickness of stripes along a zebra's flanks, the shape of mountain ranges and sand dunes) and spirals (which turn up everywhere in nature you look: in the curve of a seashell, the swirl of water boiling in a saucepan, the sweep of faraway nebulae, the twist of a strand of DNA, the turns of the labyrinth in which the legendary Minotaur lived out its days). The result is an astonishingly varied book that repays skimming and close reading alike. English biologist Sir Peter Medawar called Thompson's tome "beyond comparison the finest work of literature in all the annals of science that have been recorded in the English tongue." --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Classic of biology and modern science sets forth seminal "theory of transformation"—that one species evolves into another not by successive minor changes in individual body parts but by large-scale transformations involving the body as a whole. Rich literary style. Over 500 photographs and drawings. Index.

5 out of 5 stars Mathematical-biological gems.......2007-09-28

This is a delightful book. I shall give some sample highlights. First some things from the particularly enjoyable chapter 2, "On Magnitude".

Raindrops come in the sizes 2^n (p. 59, Dover ed.). Proof: As they leave the cloud the rain drops are all of the same size. If two rain drops meet they make one raindrop of twice the mass, as so start falling faster than the singles. Thus it will never merge with a single to make a size 3 drop, but it may join another double to make a quadruple drop. Of course the quadruples fall faster than the doubles and the singles, so they will only merge with other quadruples, and so on.

Many results are derived from "dimension theory". A simple illustration is the following "paradox" of constant-temperature animals (pp. 33-34). "The heat lost must ... be proportional to the surface of the animal: and the gain must be equal to the loss, since the temperature of the body keeps constant. It would seem, therefore, that the heat lost by radiation and that gained by oxidation vary both alike, as the surface-area, or the square of the linear dimensions, of the animal. But this result is paradoxical; for whereas the heat lost may well vary as the surface-area [i.e., as l^2], that produced by oxidation ought rather to vary as the bulk of the animal [i.e., as l^3]". Thus one is "driven to the conclusion that the smaller animal does produce more heat (per unit mass) than the larger one, in order to keep pace with surface loss; and that this extra heat-production means more energy spent, more food consumed, more work done."

Another illustration of dimension theory: the maximum jumping height of an animal is constant under scaling (p. 37), for "the work done in leaping is proportional to the mass and to the height to which it is raised, W proportional to mH. But the muscular power available for this work is proportional to the mass of muscle, ... W proportional to m. It follows that H is ... a constant. In other words, all animals, provided that they are similarly fashioned, with their various levers in like proportion, ought to jump not to the same relative but to the same actual height." It follows that "neither flea nor grasshopper is a better but rather a worse jumper than a horse or a man."

Yet another illustration of dimension theory: the maximum velocity of a fish is proportional to sqrt(length), "For the velocity (V) which the fish attains depends on the work (W) it can do and the resistance (R) it must overcome. Now we have seen that the dimensions of W are l^3 [muscle volume], and of R are l^2 [surface area friction]; and by elementary mechanics W is proportional to RV^2, or V^2 proportional to W/R. Therefore V^2 is proportional to l^3/l^2=l, and V proportional to sqrt(l)" (p. 31).

For land animals, however, velocity is constant under scaling (p. 38), as we se by considering "the momentum created ... by a given force acting for a given time: mv=Ft. We know that m is proportional to l^3 and t=l/v, so that l^3v=Fl/v, or v^2=F/l^2. But whatsoever force be available, the animal may only exert so much of it as is in proportion to the strength of his own limbs, that is to say to the cross-section of bone, sinew and muscle; and all of these cross-sections are proportional to l^2, the square of the linear dimensions. The maximal force, F_max, which the animal dare exert is proportional, then, to l^2; therefore F_max/l^2=contant. And the maximal speed which the animal can safely reach ... is also constant."

Geodesics: "an instructive case is furnished by the arrangement of the muscular fibres on the surface of a hollow organ, such as the heart or the stomach. ... In fact we have a right to expect that the muscular fibres covering such organs will coincide with geodesic lines ... For if we imagine a contractible fibre ... to be fixed by its two ends upon a curved surface, it is obvious that its first effort of contraction will tend to expend itself in accommodating the band to the form of the surface, in 'stretching it tight,' ... and it is only then that further contraction will have the effect of constricting the tube and so exercising pressure on its contents. Thus the muscular fibres ... arrange themselves automatically in geodesic curves: in precisely the same manner as we also construct complex systems of geodesics whenever we wind a ball of wool or spindle a tow, or when the skilful surgeon bandages a limb" (pp. 742-744).

Comparative anatomy of bridges. A parabolic arch bridge is designed to distribute stress uniformly. Its shape is determined by a "stress diagram": if we imagine the bridge as a beam on two pillars and plot the stress as a function of position on the bridge then we get precisely the arch needed to equi-distribute this stress. More generally, "Every diagram of moments represents the outline of a framed structure which will carry the given load with a uniform horizontal stress" (p. 996), and "to precisely those stress-lines has Nature kept in the building of the bone" (p. 995). So, for example, "whenever the head and neck represent a considerable fraction of the whole weight of the body, we tend to have large bending-moments over the fore-legs, and correspondingly high spines over the vertebrae of the withers ... The case is sufficiently exemplified by the horse, and still more notably by the stag, the ox, or the pig." (p. 1003).

4 out of 5 stars a classic compilation of very neat gems.......2007-01-05

This book is a *classic*; an adventure into abstract mathematical properties of nature. The author rambles on about many topics concerning natural manifestations as viewed from near human and cellular scales, with the tools of the early 20th century. It's that enigmatic space between Biology and Geometry, presented in a very accessible manner by an author whose love and knowledge of the subject shines through well.

2 out of 5 stars Canto: An unfortunate redaction of a timeless classic.......2005-06-22

Don't get me wrong -- "On Growth and Form" is one of my absolute top favorite books of all time. Possibly my favorite book, in fact. This review is a warning to make sure you get the right imprint.

Unfortunately some publishers think that they know better than D'Arcy Thompson, and cut out more than half of the original material. After all, nobody these days actually looks at equations, right? Well I do, and the pathetic edition by Canto (368 pages) weighs with less than 33% of the material in the modern unexpurgated reprint by Dover (1116 pages).

Amazingly enough, the redacted Canto version costs nearly the same as the Dover complete. If you care about this material, take care to get all of it.

5 out of 5 stars On Growth and Form.......2002-11-10

On Growth and Form written by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson is a classic and should be found on the bookshelf of any well read person.

This book sets our mind up for an education in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and physiology with form and function. Language skills are needed for reading this book as the author uses the original Greek in places for explaination and emphsis. Aristotle comes to mind and German is used for emphsis.

If you want to get the full extent of the text and you are not up to speed on the subjects mentioned or you'll find it hard to read this book. This could be read by a junior or senior in high school. But, I think it would be more appropriate for college.

This book is the study of organic form using methods found in the physical sciences. This book is a challenge to read, but it is very logical and straight forward.

5 out of 5 stars A misunderstood classic.......2002-10-06

A great book, to be read by all biophysicists-to-be.

The modern follow-up to this book is Thom's Structural Stability, which shows that the logical conclusion of Thompson's ideas is both exciting and dubious. We probably can't just 'look' at stuff, we need to make (useful) predictions or the theory won't last. The interested reader should also pick up, if briefly, Mandelbrot's Fractal Geometry of Nature.

Two notes of interest. 1) Morphology has indeed proven successful in proving physical theory: in the aggregation of dust particals, measuring the gross fractal dimension allows you to predict the type of noise involved in creating it. 2) The logarithmic spiral, together with the fibonnaci sequence and the golden ratio, show up quite surprisingly in synchronized chaotic loops.

PS: to these I can add three more. 3) Shipman and Newell at the University of Arizona have shown that the Fibonnaci sequence in phylotaxis arises from buckling of pressurized skin (e.g. in a cactus or young sunflower) 4) Goldstein, also at UA, has shown that a broad variety of cave patterns (from ripples on the wall to bumps on stalagtites to wonderful crystaline snowflakes) all arise as a result of a single cause, the diffusion-reaction equation. 5) the late Winfree (also at UA!) has quite conclusively shown that heart beating and defribrillation are non-equilibrium sprial patterns similar to the BZ reaction.

The whole business of form has been taken up by the Sante Fe institute, see Kauffman's At Home in the Universe. Anyone who likes this book would inevitably also love Wilson's Insect Societies.

So, hopefully you understand that Thompson's book is not an island, but a visionary precursor of active research.

Book Description

THOUGHT POWER

I want you to know right from the beginning that this is blatant pitch to get you to buy a special book.

When marketing people have suggested that I use my editorial space as a 'bully pulpit' to do just that, I have resisted the idea, but this book is too important and potentially too valuable to you for me not to make this extra effort. This book can give you:

1. One of the most powerful techniques to change your life and bring you enormous practical benefits.

2. One of the most powerful techniques to transform your life and bring enormous spiritual benefits. 3. The discipline to accomplish almost anything you can dream of.

* * *

Think of your favorite dessert.

You saw an image of it. That's a Thought Form, and if you are salivating for that dessert now you realize how powerful it is. But that's insignificant in comparison to the power of a well constructed magical thought form and it is that skill that will bring you the three benefits listed above. All action starts with a thought form, but most thought is ineffective because it lacks the conscious technique and intentional discipline taught in this book.

* * *

This book, "The Magical Use of Thought Forms" is sub-titled:

A Proven System of Mental & Spiritual Empowerment.

It is not merely a book "about" seemingly miraculous power but a detailed course of instruction with training exercises that is extraordinarily enjoyable to read and easy to put in to practice. You can call what is taught here any number of terms, but I prefer to call it "magick" because that very word stirs the imagination and it with a disciplined imagination that the Human Mind is brought to full power.

In simply reading this book you will learn many things:

· How to use a magical mirror to double the power of desire, the first step in building a magical pyramid, followed by Imagination, Visualization and Organization.

· The Importance of Pineal Gland. · How to create an effective Astral Body. · How to create an astral assistant. · How to build "God" Forms. · How to construct and use a unique Memory Palace. · The real secret to "Drawing Down the Moon." · How to create a Household Guardian. · How to work with your Guardian Angel.

And many more practical matters once held to be "occult secrets" too powerful for any but initiates to know. But these matters are too important for your growth, survival and spiritual development to remain secret. Some of them have been published elsewhere, but here you have it from two authors who are trained initiates able to give the important exercises to actually train you and develop these skills. It takes work to become a magician, but being a magician is exactly what you are here to do.

You will learn about the true natural of reality as perceived both through the Ancient Wisdom and Modern Quantum Physics. You will learn all about the Astral Plane, and how important it is to everything that manifests in the Material World in which we live.

· The Astral Plane is Key to Magical Results.

· The Astral Plane is the Foundation of the Physical Universe. · The Astral Plane is the Imagination of the Universe. · The Astral Plane includes the Manipulation of Thought Forms.

You will be trained in the building of Occult Forms, and you will gain understanding of how they function and interact, how they can gain strength and endure or how they can be erased when no longer needed. You will access special instruction in the use of the Hebrew letters to draw upon their inherent power and meaning from their long established magical usage. You will understand the nature and use of prayer. You will learn about Astral Guardians and their use. You will be taught to construct, and guard, an Inner Temple for your true magical work. You will be given an actual ritual to create a Golem and the HTML code to create web pages with which to experience the concept of cyberspace. And you will be given a series of exercises that will transform all your reading and study into practical and workable skills you can employ anytime anywhere.

YOU WILL BE EMPOWERED!

That's the point I want to make. This is not a book "about" magick, nor is it a book that requires a life time of work for results. This is a Llewellyn Magickal Arts Book that I personally endorse. Use it, follow the instruction and practice the exercises, and you will gain expertise in the building of magical thought forms and learn how to use them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's all in yer head!!!.......2007-05-14

If you've ever practiced magick and felt that there was maybe some minor detail missing from the experience, something more you could do to make it more effective, some secret that's been kept from you but you knew was just under your nose, this is the book for you!!! The exercises and ideas in this book will help you to realize your full potential! I'm not giving away any of the details of the book, but I am telling you that if you're serious about your art, then you should pick this up...If you learn just one single thing that's new, it'll be worth the price!!

5 out of 5 stars Thorough survey of Thought Forms as well as a Complete Practice.......2006-02-25

This book is, in my opinion a treasure and offers a comprehensive study that would provide a newcomer to energy work and visualization enough food for thought and practice to carry them for quite a while. It is a program, a reference, and very complete. It is also indispensible to the seasoned practitioner as well; full of previously unheard anecdotes and ideas that will offer fresh material to those already informed about magical thought.

I disagree with others' criticism that book is too chatty and here is why: If you do know about the mind, you know that some parts of the mind learn and remember best when stories are used to facilitate. This book creates thoughtforms for you, to help you learn about thoughtforms, and it does so with interesting stories and histories thrown in as examples in-between practical work.

This is not a heavy reader, so don't let the other warnings of length deter you, it is enjoyable, easy to understand and still full of depth.

Here are some of the things you will learn about if you read this book:

The nature of astral matter, how it behaves and how you interact with it regularly, and how you can interact with it consciously to cause results.
Basic and easy instructions to complete advanced thought forms.
What it is like to visualize and create objects on the astral plane.
Methods for improving your skills at visualizing.
How to create astral dwellings.
How (and why) to dismiss a thought form once it's use is finished.

You might benefit from taking notes on the page numbers of any practices in the book that you want to try, though there are exercises listed separately in the appendices.

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant text for the neophyte.......2004-05-22

I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about, there are numerous texts on magic in print and many of them are for the more adept student (why not try Julius Evola's work), but I found this to be one book I recomment most highly to beginners. It covers the most important aspects of what is fundamental to all magical workings: concentration and visualization exercises. This book, in conjunction with Peter J. Carroll's Liber Null & Psychonaut, lay down the groundwork using semantics that are easy to grasp and not overly burdened with ritual, dogma, and other baggage from magic's past. Highly suggested.

1 out of 5 stars Turgid Babble.......2002-05-09

I have no idea what these authors are trying to put across. They do spend a lot of time trying to put a scientific explanation to what an imagination is and giving the reader thier "occult expertise". The fact that one of the authors claims that astral projection is impossible to achieve at will implies that they are most likely one of Israel Regardies' "Cosmic Foo-Goos". The reader, if they take this work to heart, may come from the experience a less effectual person. It is sad that [garbage] like this gets sold and marketed when there is so much more valuable stuff out there.

5 out of 5 stars Cogito ergo sum.......2002-02-13

Truly magical. This book comes under the heading of "I wish I had read this years ago". These two authors write seamlessly, you can hardly tell where one leaves off and another begins. They interact very well. On the theoretical side there is a wealth of knowledge to delve into and thimk about. This part alone kept me alternately reading and thinking for almost a week. I did not want to miss a word. Then I got to the practical side and had to keep re-reading paragraphs because I kept getting new insights.

All in all a remarkable book . I hope they write more. The combination of scientific and practical information is stunning, and so down to earth, unlike the airy fairy stuff that is published nowadays.

I was in Borders when I stumbled along this book and thought " What a clever title and concept." As a twenty something professional in higher education that deals with early twenty something women on a regular basis, I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read but able to be put down and picked back up easily. There were times when I shook my head in agreement and laughed aloud hysterically.

At 20 years old, I am already plagued by those life altering questions such as: where is my artsy boyfriend/why do I not have a loft downtown decorated solely in Italian furniture/is there some logical explanation why there is not a midnight blue Range Rover in my driveway? Self-absorbed and delusional? Yes. Precisely why this collection of essays is for me. Overall the essays where clever and interesting, although they were all written by successful female "chick-lit" authors, and we know their lives turned out just fine, but what about the other struggling cocktail-waitress twenty-somethings out there that now live in a trailer park and are married to a guy named Bubba?

To be honest, your 20's SUCK. Getting out of college sucks. Looking for a career sucks. Making adult friends sucks. And finding your place in the world sucks.

Before I read this book, everyone made me feel like it just sucked for me. But now I know it doesn't. It sucks for everyone. And this book proves it.

This book made me cry and laugh. It's comforting to know that there are other people who have dealt with situations and feelings identical to what I am going through now. It is also comforting to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

This book is the best therapy a girl (or a guy) could ask for. Anyone going through a quarterlife crisis or even just feeling slightly tormented should read this book cover to cover. I promise it'll talk you back from the ledge and I promise you'll feel better afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the read, especially if you're currently enduring your twenties .......2007-01-21

This collection is brilliant. I've been experiencing a bit of angst lately and have been beating myself up over it, constantly telling myself, "I'm in my mid-twenties and shouldn't be thinking like this any more; it's time to grow up!" I feel better to know that I'm not alone and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The authors in this collection are strong, funny, intelligent women. They're the kind of woman that I believe myself to be (on my better days) and aspire to become (on my slightly-more-discouraged days). There were a couple of stories that slowed the pace a bit for me (I don't have the book at hand and don't recall the titles), but all in all, this book made me feel better about life in general, and this decade particularly.

As the oldest of four, I've not known what it was like to sit down and receive encouragement from an older sister. Now I do!

5 out of 5 stars Peanuts - the BEST !!.......2007-10-01

I;ve followed the Peanuts gang ever since they first appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle. This book brings back happy memories of the gang & I'd recommend it to any Peanuts reader as a "must have".

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Piece of Childhood.......2007-03-31

It's great to have this book again. I had the first editions of all the small "square hardbacks" in the 60's, but lost them somewhere along the line.

They reflect the simplicity and warmth of PEANUTS in their very format.

I thank whoever reproduced these little gems!!! I owned this in elementary school and saw it featured in a woman's magazine and flipped! This book is still as great today as it was then. I bought one for my neighbor's grandaughter and she loves it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

5 out of 5 stars A gem from the past.......2005-03-23

I too loved this book as a child. The simple repetetive text helps the reader find simple pleasures in everyday life. I am a teacher now and I have been searching for this book to use with my kindergarteners. I searched in the local libraries to no avail. Of the numerous books I possessed as a child, only two stand out in my memory. One is Happiness is a Warm Puppy and the other, Never Tease a Weasel. For a children's book to make such a lasting impression on so many people is remarkable. It is a shame it can't be put back in print for another generation to enjoy.

I wish I still owned the book but unfortunately it was given away but I would love to find this book again not only for me for sentimental reasons but also for my niece! Please reprint this book!

    Book Description

The intimate relationship between form and function inherent in the design of animals is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the musculoskeletal system. This book, about how function determines form, addresses the role of mechanical factors in the development, adaptation, maintenance, aging, and repair of skeletal tissues. The authors refer to this process as mechanobiology and develop their theme within an evolutionary framework. They show how degenerative disorders such as arthritis and osteoporosis are regulated by the same mechanical processes that influence normal development and growth. Skeletal Function and Form bridges important gaps among disciplines, providing a common ground for a multidisciplinary understanding.
