Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

La microbiología es la rama de la biología más interesante, conocer el metabolismo y forma de vida de las bacterias va más halla de lo que uno puede imaginar, cada una tiene su propio nombre y caracteristicas que las distinguen unas de otras. A mi parecer las enterobacterias es lo más emocionante que puede existir en esta área, su identificación es una tarea entretenida y muy emocionante. La microbiología es lo máximo.

I bought this book because it was required for my microbiology lab. I hated this class to begin with but by then end i LOVED IT! The book is so helpful and easy to learn from. I would reccommend it to anyone.

A good beginner's manual.......2006-03-10

This book is very clear and straight-forward. If you read the text ahead of time, you will clearly understand the procedures and theoretical context for your lab class. It clearly is a beginner's manual, though, so it does not go terribly in depth into the molecular biochemistry of the experiments, which for many people will be a good thing, but not for those who want to learn everything about everything.

Best introductory molecular biology course out there.......2002-04-19

This is a real "course", not just a number of experiments in a row to introduce techniques. The course takes you from soup to nuts in making a "biotechnology" product, instructing the student in the most important of molecular biology techniques along the way. Safety and record keeping are stressed. The student will gain technical knowledge and also will really see and understand how a product, in this course an enzyme, can be made from a cloned gene. The idea of teaching techniques on a continuum is really a great idea. Though the second edition is now a few years old, the methods are tried and true and haven't changed so don't let the date stop you. The writing is succinct and there are helpful hints for the instructor for getting the lab classroom set up, etc. I think this course would be appropriate for an advanced high school biotech class, a post-secondary technial school or college, or undergrad college class. I highly reccommend this book.

My lab wouldn't exist without this book! The flow diagrams make ID a breeze and they even include recipes for the media and reagents. There are a couple of typos (+ that should be - for instance), and it does need up-dating (cmon editors!) but I'd warmly recommend this to any diagnostic Micro lab that isn't fully automated

It compares nicely to many of the wildlife and outdoor guides leading the observer step by step to a definite identification of rumen ciliate protozoa to a species level. This manual is comprehensive, detailed and easy to use. Dr. Dehority's attention to detail and his ability to focus on important features of the ciliates show the perfect union of an artist and scientist. His Procedures section at the end of the book provide the student with all the "recipes" needed to make some discoveries of their own.
