Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars IT COVERED BOTH TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS.......2003-03-30

Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

4 out of 5 stars La microbiologia.......2002-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Micro lab book.......2007-08-09

I bought this book because it was required for my microbiology lab. I hated this class to begin with but by then end i LOVED IT! The book is so helpful and easy to learn from. I would reccommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Microbiology Lab Manual.......2007-02-10

This book arrived in excellent condition within the specified time. It was a brand new book and was exactly as advertised.

4 out of 5 stars A good beginner's manual.......2006-03-10

This book is very clear and straight-forward. If you read the text ahead of time, you will clearly understand the procedures and theoretical context for your lab class. It clearly is a beginner's manual, though, so it does not go terribly in depth into the molecular biochemistry of the experiments, which for many people will be a good thing, but not for those who want to learn everything about everything.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2005-09-27

I was very please. Service was fast, price awedsome,and merchandise in perfect shape. I will keep buying from you guys!

      Book Description

      For the first time in over 20 years, a comprehensive collection of photographs and descriptions of species in the fungal genus Fusarium is available. This laboratory manual provides an overview of the biology of Fusarium and the techniques involved in the isolation, identification and characterization of individual species and the populations in which they occur. It is the first time that genetic, morphological and molecular approaches have been incorporated into a volume devoted to Fusarium identification. The authors include descriptions of species, both new and old, and provide protocols for genetic, morphological and molecular identification techniques.The Fusarium Laboratory Manual also includes some of the evolutionary biology and population genetics thinking that has begun to inform the understanding of agriculturally important fungal pathogens. In addition to practical "how-to " protocols it also provides guidance in formulating questions and obtaining answers about this very important group of fungi. The need for as many different techniques as possible to be used in the identification and characterization process has never been greater. These approaches have applications to fungi other than those in the genus Fusarium. This volume presents an introduction to the genus Fusarium, the toxins these fungi produce and the diseases they can cause."The Fusarium Laboratory Manual is a milestone in the study of the genus Fusarium and will help bridge the gap between morphological and phylogenetic taxonomy. It will be used by everybody dealing with Fusarium in the Third Millenium. "--W.F.O. Marasas, Medical Research Council, South AfricaDrs. Leslie and Summerell organize an annual Fusarium Laboratory Workshop in which participants receive hands-on instruction in the implementation of and the interpretation of results from the techniques described in this manual.

        Book Description

        The objectives of this Second Edition of Biotechnology: A Laboratory Course remain unchanged: to create a text that consists of a series of laboratory exercises that integrate molecular biology with protein biochemistry techniques while providing a continuum of experiments. The course begins with basic techniques and culminates in the utilization of previously acquired technical experience and experimental material. Two organisms, Sacchaomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli, a single plasmid, and a single enzyme are the experimental material, yet the procedures and principles demonstrated are widely applicable to other systems. This text will serve as an excellent aid in the establishment or instruction of introductory courses in the biological sciences.

        Key Features of this new edition:
        * All exercises and appendixes have been updated
        * Includes new exercises on
        * Polymerase chain reaction

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Best introductory molecular biology course out there.......2002-04-19

        This is a real "course", not just a number of experiments in a row to introduce techniques. The course takes you from soup to nuts in making a "biotechnology" product, instructing the student in the most important of molecular biology techniques along the way. Safety and record keeping are stressed. The student will gain technical knowledge and also will really see and understand how a product, in this course an enzyme, can be made from a cloned gene. The idea of teaching techniques on a continuum is really a great idea. Though the second edition is now a few years old, the methods are tried and true and haven't changed so don't let the date stop you. The writing is succinct and there are helpful hints for the instructor for getting the lab classroom set up, etc. I think this course would be appropriate for an advanced high school biotech class, a post-secondary technial school or college, or undergrad college class. I highly reccommend this book.

          Book Description

          Cowan and Steel’s Manual has for many years had an essential role in every laboratory of microbiology and bacteriology. This substantially revised new edition, which is modelled on the successful pattern established in the previous two editions, has been fully updated and is suitable for all bacteriological laboratories using traditional diagnostic methods. It is essentially a practical manual with up-to-date contributions and key references by experts to the diagnostic characteristics of the bacteria likely to be encountered in public health and hospital microbiology laboratories, as well as in medical and veterinary practice. This edition contains new sections on rapid and mechanised test methods, and on the laboratory applications of computer theory and practice to the identification of bacteria. As in previous editions, the importance of laboratory quality control and proficiency procedures are emphasised. The Appendices give details of the laboratory methods and media for all the recommended diagnostic tests and, in addition, provide abstracts of the official guidelines for bacterial nomenclature.

          My lab wouldn't exist without this book! The flow diagrams make ID a breeze and they even include recipes for the media and reagents. There are a couple of typos (+ that should be - for instance), and it does need up-dating (cmon editors!) but I'd warmly recommend this to any diagnostic Micro lab that isn't fully automated

          Dr. Burk Dehority's manual for Classification and Morphology of Rumen Ciliate Protozoa is a must for any student of Rumen Microbiology. It compares nicely to many of the wildlife and outdoor guides leading the observer step by step to a definite identification of rumen ciliate protozoa to a species level. This manual is comprehensive, detailed and easy to use. Dr. Dehority's attention to detail and his ability to focus on important features of the ciliates show the perfect union of an artist and scientist. His Procedures section at the end of the book provide the student with all the "recipes" needed to make some discoveries of their own.
