Great Read.......2003-03-01
I recently joined a volunteer fire department and this book
truly helped me through the six months probationary period.
Great!!.......2002-12-02
This is a must have for anyone who aspires to being a firefighter. Vivid descriptions, Helpful tips, How-to Skill Sheets, and Clear illustrations help the student master otherwise difficult material. I'm currently going through firefighting class and would not be able to live without this book.
Firefighter Review.......2002-04-22
The book is excellent in its layout. Is easy to follow and is a very imformative piece of necessary literature for any firefighter taking firefighter 1. Is very informative on NFPA regulations and guidelines. I was impressed with the detail that was given in the book, our instructor was impressed with this book as well.
Book Description
Modern firefighting is a continually evolving science. New technologies are constantly being applied to the fire service, both from within and without. In the latest edition of this perennial favorite, author John Norman examines these new technologies and how they affect fireground tactics. He also details the new role firefighters play in homeland security. What is offered here is a guide for the firefighter and the fire officer who, having learned the basic mechanics of the trade, are now looking for specific methods for handling specific situations.
Customer Reviews:
Practical and worthwhile, even if you aren't a member of the FDNY.......2007-04-08
It is widely discussed in fire service circles that this text is an amalgom of FDNY tactical bulletins and other internal documents, such as Ladders 3 and Ladders 4. If so, it offers useful information for fire problems most of us routinely encounter. The 3rd edition has hideously tiny print and is over run by wordiness, but does have additional chapters on WMD issues as well as townhouse/garden apartment fires. There is new text intersprised all through out the book. Norman is a tough read - passive voice, run on sentences and double negatives - but the material is still worth digging through. And hey, the bulding classification codes from the 1st and 2nd editions got corrected.
A must for any working firefighter.
Very informative!.......2007-03-17
I found this book to be very informative. It helps answer the "what if this happens" questions that every firefighter ponders when they have time to reflect. I definitely recommend picking up this book whether you are an actual officer or firefighter.
Good Book for Rook or Vet.......2007-02-10
I bought this as a text for a class but I'm finding it very thorough and easy to follow with tons of good info.
excellent resource.......2006-04-11
This book is full of valuable information, and has helped to fill in some gaps in my understanding of certain firefighting tactics that I simply have not learned in my five years in the fire service. This book simply has more valuable, pertinent information than any other fire/rescue text I have ever read. Incredible!
The books only flaw is the photos are of very poor quality.
It is full of a great wealth of knowledge and insight. Awesome text, very easy, interesting read.
I highly recommend this book.
The New Essentials.......2002-11-16
This is quite possibly the finest tactical instruction manual on the market. Despite regional variences in tactics, this book will expand your understanding of your current SOP's and allow you to try something new with a proven record. Masterfully written and not the boring text you're used to in textbooks. This is a must read for anyone wishing to advance in the fire service...truly a new essential.

Customer Reviews:
Great handbook.......2007-03-06
This is a great resource for firefighters. I went through the fire academy and spent the past few years using IFSTA Essentials to study with. I found the Firefighter's Handbook to be much more entertaining and enlightening. The chapters read alot easier and seem to be written for firefighters rather than students. It's loaded with more fire service history and many more tips and tricks of the trade than essentials. Highly recommend it.
Great book!.......2007-02-19
This book has to be, hands down best book to get if you want to know all about Firefighter I.
Excellent.......2007-01-12
I found this book very useful. This is an excellent introduction in fire fighting and rescue. In my country (The Czech Republic) some drills, standard operation procedures and organization matters are different, but this publication is still very useful and inspiriting.
Pennsylvania Beware.......2006-11-26
DO NOT buy this book if you are in Pennsylvania! The Commonwealth has created their own edition that is similar, but different than this. You will be frustrated in class trying to follow along with this version.
a great book.......2005-12-04
Much better than the previously used texts at the local fire academy, and the skills sections make a good resource for in house drills.
Book Description
This text is to be used as both a guide for the fireground strategist/tactician and the promotional candidate in preparing for a written exam. There are text and short answer questions as well as multiple choice scenarios, which are used by many testing authorities today. Each answer is explained in depth to help the reader understand the reason for the strategy or tactic presented. This text uses case studies extensively to drive points home. The text will allow the strategist to make decisions about such activities as line placement, ventilation considerations, and resource distribution, among other things. It will also allow the tactician to choose proper tactics in a given situation, enhancing the decision-making process on the fireground. It is the intent of this text, through diligent study and lesson reinforcement, to motivate, challenge, and strengthen both the fireground strategist/tactician and/or the promotional candidate.

Tactics & Strategies at their best!.......2002-10-16
Anthony has done a great job putting this book together (with a little help from his friends). This book is written in english, not technical jargon. He knows what he's talking about and explains it beautifully. A must read for every fire officer or anyone who wants to be a fire officer some day. Whether volunteer or career, this is the book you need!

Book Description
This book was developed to assist paid and volunteer firefighters in the quest to become fire officers. Based on NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Competency, 2003 Edition, this updated book features vital information for those who seek certification as Fire Officer I or II. Comprehensive coverage not only satisfies the operational requirements of NFPA 1021 levels I and II, but also addresses the all-important 'soft skills' that are essential to quick mastery of the fire officer position. Human resource management, communication, leadership, community and government relations, administration and management, fire prevention, inspections and investigations, and safety issues are all addressed for proficiency on the job. In this regard, the book is also useful for members of rescue squads, emergency medical response agencies, and other similar emergency organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Company officer.......2007-06-28
A must for Fire Officers preparing for certification or testing.
The book is layed out good. Covers many aspects of management, communication and "people skills".
If you are freezing to death, burn this book!.......2007-04-07
This is the second worst fire service text I've ever been exposed to; filled with misinformation, bad grammer, and sloppy prose. From mislabeling Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to misnaming FDNY's Squad 252, calling it Squadron 252 (I don't think the FDNY deploys any fighter planes), this book offers no practical and very little academic advice for the aspiring company officer.
In regards to the student workbook, most workbooks usually reflect their source text in both content and syntax - not here! Several of the questions in the chapter quiz sections use language that is so radically different from the text book, it is difficult to find an answer. This inconsistency forces the student to infer an answer, which often occurs during an exam, but shouldn't be part of studying. The lack of an answer key renders the book useless.
needed for classroom - but is a good read.......2007-03-20
as text books go this read well. easy to condense with highlighted boxes with key points.
Company Officer.......2006-11-05
I purchase this text for a class I was taking but will keep it as a reference to use as a future resource.

Good study guide.......2007-09-24
I thought that the study guide reinforced what was taught in the hardcover edition. The questions are often seen on promotional tests.
Fire Officer's Handbook of Tactics study Guide.......2007-06-27
Very informative considering that I have ambitions of becoming an officer someday. It give's you a different perspective about what we do and how to handle situations that we come across from someone else's point of veiw.

Customer Reviews:
Notabily the "Dean of Building Construction for the Fire Service".......2007-09-10
The late Francis L. Brannigan was truly the "Dean" of the American Fire Service modern era. He was the very first and the best at putting the emphasis on structural safety for fire fighters and the general public. Francis was the first and foremost outspoken fire service professional at speaking out against lowering building construction standards and pointing out what's killing fire fighters and occupants in substandard building construction. This is a must read for all of those in the fire service, builing code officials and those in the building trades.
Very good insight.......2007-01-05
I was lucky enough over the years to have attended classes taught by Mr Brannigan. Yes, it is all over the place. But I can tell you this, this book has saved my life more than once. That was Mr Brannigans motivation the whole time when he wrote this book, not to make money, but to save lives. He was a great man and will truly be missed by many. If you are in the fire service, this should be one of the books you own.
Stick to IFSTA's Bld Construction..........2004-04-20
Mr. Brannigan, whether senile or just incompetent, fails to write his book in any logical order. He is all over the place when presenting the few facts he is actually correct about. The book currently stands at 667 pages. It would be 1/3 of that length if it weren't for the numerous opinions, hearsay and accumulated ramblings of this arm chair quarterback who has apparently done more fire buffing than fire fighting! Studying for a promotional or just increasing your knowledge base? Stick with IFSTA's Bld Contstruction and study guide or Vinnie Dunn's "Collapse of Burning Buildings."
THE book for the Fire Service........2003-06-07
This should be required reading for anyone in the fire service who deals with Structural fire fighting. The book is pretty straight forward and in an easy to read font. I love this book. It also has a pretty decent index if you're using it for school. Out of all the books I've had to buy for school so far, this is the best one. If you're a fan of Brunacini, you may find a few points where they disagree, thus creating the great debate between which author is right. The principles of this book are easily put to use in day to day firefighting and could possibly save your life.
Must Read For All Fire Personnel.......2002-11-16
This is not an easy reading book. Dry and distant at times it is however the finest collection of fire dept related constrution information ever collated. Whether you like it or not you MUST read this book. The information within could make the difference when your backs against the wall.

Save your money.......2006-02-22
If you need to buy the book because the author is your instructor, then do so. If you want to learn how to make sound, prudent decisions as a firefighter, purchase John Norman's "Fire Officer's Handbook." The difference between the two is like reading Dr. Suess and Shakespeare.
Firefighting Strategies and Tactics.......2001-07-26
I think this is a wonderful book. It kept me spellbound for hours.
