Book Description
The unique feature of this book's first edition was the presentation of a unified approach to the molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The success of this approach, and its continuation, is the result of a long string of discoveries showing similarities in solutions to biological problems that often extend across many or even all species. A six-part organization covers genes, proteins, gene expression, DNA, the nucleus, and cells. For individuals in the science community interested in genetics.
Customer Reviews:
Molecular biology can be easy to learn.......2007-02-13
I have been using Genes VIII for a year already in my Molecular Biology studies and I should state that this is one of the best books written in this field.
First of all, the material is structured in a clear manner. Moreover all terms are introduced starting from simple things, which become harder and harder as you proceed. That gives the student the opportunity to form the overall picture of molecular biological processes.
Besides, each chapter starts with the introduction that is very useful when you want to review the things (i.e. before the exam).
In my opinion this book contains a lot of visual material that definitely helps students to understand the material more thoroughly.
To sum up, I would recommend everybody who wants to explore the world of Molecular Biology to buy this book.
One of the best.......2006-04-29
This text is a vast improvement on the previous editions. Its improved vastly on both clarity and content. The figures themselves are excellent learning tools. Combined with uptodate material, it is in my opinion peerless. Its rivals would be lodish and alberts but in some areas complements them and often outshines them. The textbook exists online at ergito.com and you could subcribe for the duration of your course. The website gives you access to the complete material in the print text and you also save a ton of money by subscribing for a shorter period, that is if you find cash an issue. However, I wholeheartedly recommend the print edition as a trusted companion for those embarking on graduate studies.
A great book on biology.......2004-12-03
Dr. Lewin's work has helped me understand biology and improve my understanding of the sciences. The design and figures in Genes are wonderfully clear, as is the general body of the text.
Furthermore, his website at ergito.com has some great supplemental material on the important procedures of science and past experiments that have changed sciences.
Between the Genes book and the subscription to Ergito, Dr. Lewin's work is a great opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge. I thought Genes VIII was great, and a good step forward from Genes VII.

Book Description
Reviews of the Second Edition
"In this book, Andy Baxevanis and Francis Ouellette . . . have undertaken the difficult task of organizing the knowledge in this field in a logical progression and presenting it in a digestible form. And they have done an excellent job. This fine text will make a major impact on biological research and, in turn, on progress in biomedicine. We are all in their debt."
--Eric Lander, from the Foreword to the Second Edition
"The editors and the chapter authors of this book are to be applauded for providing biologists with lucid and comprehensive descriptions of essential topics in bioinformatics. This book is easy to read, highly informative, and certainly timely. It is most highly recommended for students and for established investigators alike, for anyone who needs to know how to access and use the information derived in and from genomic sequencing projects."
--Trends in Genetics
"It is an excellent general bioinformatics text and reference, perhaps even the best currently available . . . Congratulations to the authors, editors, and publisher for producing a weighty, authoritative, readable, and attractive book."

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat more than an out-of-date catalog of tools.......2004-03-27
The book is a collection of chapters by different authors addressing software tools for various problems: database search, multiple sequence alignment, gene prediction, protein structure prediction, etc. A big flaw is that all of the authors assume a different level of prior background and have rather different emphases.
I'd have to agree with the other reviewer that Chapters 1 & 17, which constitute 10% of the book, are wasted paper. No one in 2001 (when the book was published), let alone 2004, needs Chapter 1's lengthy explanation of what e-mail and web browsers are. And the perl program at the anticlimax of Chapter 17 was ... anticlimactic.
The book is to a great extent a catalog of available software tools. With the exception of the chapters on multiple alignment and phylogeny, the emphasis is on not on how the tools work but how to operate them -- to the of saying "at this URL there is a web page where you can either paste in your sequence or upload a file". The idea of invoking a program through a Unix command line is more than once presented as a truly daunting prospect. The authors generally do a good job of emphasizing that the programs are the beginning of analysis and not the end; the results must always be viewed somewhat skeptically with an expert eye.
If you're coming at the book as a biologist, you will probably find it to be a useful catalog of software, though undoubtedly dated by now. If you're coming at it from the informatics side, you're going to need some background... a book like Dwyer's, Setubal and Meidanis's, or Mount's will get you up to speed on the algorithm aspects of the field with simplified versions of many of the big problems. Then you can look at this book to find good pointers to the ways the real-world versions have been addressed.
The book was published three years ago and, being to a large extent an index of the work of others, is necessarily no longer up to date in a fast-moving field. It needs a revision and, in the meantime, it would make more sense to snag a used copy than to pay full price for a new book.
A survey for tool users.......2003-10-09
Like any survey, it seems to touch the major features only. And, as others have pointed out, the tools change but the book doesn't.
I think this is a good, brief introduction to the wide variety of bioinformatic tools and databases on the internet. It describes the major features of each, and the kinds of results that each tool is good for. After that, the serious user will go to the sources of each tool or database, to learn more about the specifics as of the moment. No book can hope to keep up with the weekly enhancements at the major repositories.
I emphasize that this is for tools users, not tool makers. It addresses the working scientists who already know their subjects and their needs. This skips over the algorithms in favor of higher level descriptions, and skips over many of the biological reasons for the tools described. Better-informed tool users get better answers from the tools, true. At some point, though, the biologists want to skip the theory, skip the introduction to subjects in which they're experts, and get on with their science. I don't think this book was ever meant for people - and I'm one - who want full details of the algorithms.
I agree, the book treats its many subjects in a shallow way. I think that is by intent, since the book's real goal is breadth and its target is a reader who knows the basic science. It's a bit off the center of my interests, but I've found it helpful.
Bioinformatic for the beginner..........2003-01-31
I guess that everybody interrested by this kind of book knows already a little about bioinformatic and wants to improve his bioinformatician skill. So forget about this book:
This is really a well-documented introduction to all the methods currently used by every biologist or biology student, such as Blast, Clustal, multiple alignement or use of web-interface for submiting sequence.
So get it if you need a clear introduction to the field, but if you already know a little bit about bioinfo, immediately choose a more detailed book.
Poorly organized overpriced book.......2002-09-30
Although the book is presented as an introduction to the topic, its organization assumes that the reader has already been working in the area. Two of the chapters (1 and 17) are a waste of space. The first chapter presents a (useless) introduction to internet, while chapter 17 attempts (and fails to do so) to explain Perl in the context of bioinformatics. For the same money you can find far better books in the market. The good thing is that I only borrowed the book :)
..........2002-06-27
I used the Baxevanis volume in coursework at Johns Hopkins Biotechnology program...several of the chapter authors are associated with the school. There's no doubt that the editor and authors are experts in their fields, but the volume seems somewhat dated, and is disjointed. I found a couple of the chapters virtually unreadable. The real killer is the price. The book is GROSSLY overpriced...

general introduction book for biological science.......2004-03-26
This book is only provided general information for biological science. The main part is focus on the drug information, which can be found in the public resources.Little information is mentioned about how to develop a new drug. Thus, it is suitable for undergranduate student reading, not for academic research.
Useful Book.......2003-08-06
"...faculty that teach in the pharmaceutics curriculum will find the Ho and Gibaldi text of great value as course content is revised and new areas are added and expanded. The book provides important linkages between the science and therapeutics of biotechnology products that faculty will find useful in integrating the subject matter in health sciences and graduate program curricula." --Stuart Feldman, Ph.D., Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute and Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia
Disappointingly written and edited.......2003-07-04
This book appears to me to be very poorly edited, with numerous clerical and scientific errors. For instance, multiple sclerosis is termed a "neurogenerative" disease rather than a "neurodegenerative" disease. The writing includes some of the longest sentences I've ever seen in scientific writing, and not to the author's benefit. The authors repeat themselves quite a bit from one chapter to the next. Disappointing!

Book Description
The GTPase Superfamily Chairman: Frank McCormick 1993 GTPases are enzymes that use GTP hydrolysis to drive the sequential binding of molecules to a series of reaction partners. They play important roles in ribosomal protein synthesis, translocation of nascent proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum, transmembrane signalling by hormones and light, the control of differentiation and cell proliferation, and the targeting of vesicular traffic within cells. GTPase activity is also associated with two of the mechanochemical enzymes, dynamin and tubulin, that generate force for intracellular movement. Although GTPases fulfil such diverse functions, they are related by the possession of distinct, highly conserved sequence motifs that encode the guanine nucleotide-binding domain. Rapid advances in determining the crystal structures of some of the superfamily members have shed light on the nature of this region, which allows the protein to act as a molecular switch. This switch mechanism, turned `on' by the binding of GTP and `off' by the hydrolysis of GTP to GDP, appears to have arisen early in evolution and has since been adapted to suit a variety of functions in the cell. If the GTPase switch is damaged, or locked `on' then a number of diseases, including cancers, can arise. The effector proteins with which GTPases interact and their downstream target molecules are now being identified: this book contains recent information on these and discussion of their importance in different cellular functions. The various regulatory proteins that modulate GTPase activity are also described by some of the leading biochemists, geneticists and cell and molecular biologists from this field. MUCH better than your average pop science book........2005-06-14
I have to say that this was a very poorly edited book littered with bizarre mistakes: grammatical, spelling, and elementary history (the introduction talks about 17th century Victorian ladies!). The writing style veers from something targeted at teenagers to something more adult and back again, sometimes in one paragraph.
Having said that, this book really is worth reading, in spite of the style, because the science it describes is riveting. I was vaguely aware of fluorescence as something used by biologists, but the author really does a great job of covering the field; the history, the various ways in which fluorescence is used, the ways in which the essential chemistry of the subject has been modified over the past few years. I'm a sucker for pop science books but, sadly, most of them rehash material that any educated person should already know. It's rare to find one, like this, that not only is packed with material that I did not know but that also manages to weave it all into a coherent narrative.
A fun tour of discovery.......2005-04-13
It's a long time that I have been so fascinated by a popular science book as now happened, reading "Glowing Genes". Marc Zimmer neatly explains what one needs to know about genetics and chemistry. But that is not all. Since I read the book a few weeks ago,
· I have become more sensitive to and interested in the benefits of research done for the sake of discovering secrets of nature, as opposed to primarily profit motivated research.
· I believe to understand that not all cloning of animals is harmful, that the pros and cons have to be weighed in each case,
· And having read "Glowing Genes" and Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything", I often wonder how many inventors and first discoverers are forgotten or intentionally not recorded.
Reading "Glowing Genes" is a fun-tour of discovery. My mostly outdated High School Science seems to have been enough background to understand the well explained complex issues. I did have problems though with chapter 12. Perhaps I should read it once more.
Wow - Can they really do that?.......2005-04-06
I bought this book because I was fascinated by the pictures on the cover and read it to see if scientists can really make pigs with glowing noses. They can and they can do so much more. This book was very interesting and was easy to read. I finished it in one go. The author acknowledges Bill Bryson as one of his influences and you can clearly see that in his writing style ...perhaps thats why I enjoyed it so much. Glowing Genes also has cool pictures of a glowing bunny and fluorescent fruit fly sperm. It presents the complete story of GFP and the firefly protein - from the early scientists who caught 1000's of jellyfish and fruit flies to the newest applications. Read it, you will enjoy it.
Bioluminescence.......2005-03-01
I must admit I haven't read this book yet but I did have Marc Zimmer as a professor in college and he was a fascinating man with very interesting ideas. I am possitive that this book will be nothing less than great! If you're reading this review, chances are that you're a least someone interested in the topic of bioluminescence, and that's the case, then I highly recommend you give this book a read! Professor Zimmer lectured on this topic and the technology and possibilites are AMAZING!!!
