5 out of 5 stars Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students.......2003-11-13

I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc. It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause. I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better. I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books. I give each book five stars.

2 out of 5 stars Too much information.......2000-08-07

This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology (with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that's not a good thing if you're trying to study from it. The chapters are full of information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest to only those who make a living in the field. Otherwise, you'll have to search hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than this one

5 out of 5 stars good for 2nd yr med school micro - but short on clin. stuff.......1997-12-21

depending on the focus of your course, this might not have enough clinical case-related material. Great for the "big flick" with a very well laid out presentation (not enough pix or graphs), very good overall. Lot's of people in my class chose the Appleton and Lange (same publisher) 'Review" version of this book (blue cover).

Book Description

The use of animal, including human, cell culture has expanded enormously during the last 25 years, with new applications appearing all the time. The aim of this book is to guide the newcomer progressively through all those areas which nowadays are basic to the performance of cell culture. The book should also prove useful to the experienced worker when entering a new field, setting up a new laboratory, or as a source of reference on basic techniques. Revised and updated chapters cover topics such as equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization, culture media, basic culture technique, cell cloning, the isolation of new cell lines, contamination procedures, and good laboratory practice. There is a brand new chapter on the microscopy of living cells, and an appendix of online resources for cell biology.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars intro to cell culture.......2001-07-20

I found this book to be very helpful. The information is current and clearly presented. (other texts I purchased had more recent publication dates, but were clearly out-of-date in the techniques and equipment used).

I run a high through-put cell culture lab (about 4000 T175 per week). I purchased the text mainly as a training aid.
50% of my staff 'person hours' come from part time college students who only stayed for one or 2 semesters, thus I am faced with having to train new staff often.

This text gives a good, clear introduction to the basics of cell culture and sterile technique and significantly cut down on the amount of time it took me to train new staff. I made it required reading for all my staff!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great for review.......2005-11-20

While this book may not give quite the same level of detail found in some of the more massive and expensive intro to biochem texts, it is nevertheless a valuable reference. The fundamentals are all here, in an admirably clear and concise form. That makes going back to review much easier than with the fat books. In that way, this book fills an important gap in the field of available texts. If however one comes across a particularly difficult concept, the concise explanations may leave them wanting or needing more. In fairness though, I think a lot of the fatter books have the same drawback despite their longwindedness. Afterall, biochemistry can be pretty tough no matter what book you're looking at. If you are using the book as part of a class, then theoretically that is why there is an instructor, lectures and tutorial sessions. Admittedly, and to the student's detriment, the system doesn't always work out that way. I've found the book to be excellent for review because of its brevity and clarity. This book also gets high marks for attempting to point out the clinical relevance of the material, something that cannot be said for the majority of the big textbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Way better than the others I tried to read........2005-08-09

I tried reading two other books, and found this book is much easier to read. It is shorter, which is perhaps why I found it more accessible. Its illustrations and descriptions are clear and understandable. It's well organized and it doesn't waste the reader's time by going on and on about trivial, irrelevant stuff (part of being well organized: one flaw I found in chemistry books of all types was a tendency to go on and on about some totally minute and irrelevant example, so that it was hard to separate core principles from time-wasting detail.)

The depth of coverage is no doubt not so deep as those great big monstrous books, but I feel I learned more even if all I learned were general principles. I really like this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Everybody.......2005-05-31

It seems that people like this book a lot or don't like it at all. I must admit, I don't like it very much. However, I think it depends a lot on: 1) your biochem background, and 2) your personal reading style. Someone mentioned to me that Harper's is like a graduate school text - full of detailed information and appropriate if your background in biochem is sound. However, most first year med students are not biochem majors and need a text that is easier to read (and enjoy). I bought Harper's 26th edition and also Lippincott's Illustrated Review (3rd ed.). They both cover similar topics (not necessarily in the same order), but they differ (significantly) in the way each presents the material. Different chapters in Harper's are written by various authors which creates a glaring inconsistency throughout the book. Many of the chapters are well written but some are just plain awful. The chapters that are poorly written make it difficult to nail down the main points. I often find important information embedded in the book's "essay-type" format. Illustrations are ok, but nothing to write home about. Biosynthetic pathways, for example, are squeezed onto one page with very small print. Sometimes these diagrams are so "busy" that it takes more effort than should be necessary to untangle the important concepts, and quite frankly, is simply uninteresting to look at.

Conversely, Lippincott has wonderfully full-coloured illustrations that are professionally drawn, easier to understand, get to the point, and are visually interesting. Besides the great illustrations, the text throughout Lippincott is consistent, clear, and concise. Topics in each chapter are broken down in easy to digest sub-topics and the entire text book is superior in its organization compared to Harper's (which is basically a compilation of essays). Important concepts stand out and crucial information is not couched as it is in Harper's. However, like I said, if your background in biochem is strong, then you already know what is important and Harper's may well suit your needs. My suggestion is: if you have a strong background in biochem, don't mind superfluous language (i.e. "essay-type" text), and don't care for pretty pictures, then go for Harper's. My instructor raves about Harper's, but ironically, has to use many other sources for his lectures and seminars. If biochem is not your "thing" to begin with, and you like subject material that is concise, well illustrated, and easy (enjoyable) to read, then choose Lippincott (and maybe buy a used copy of Harper's as a reference text, as I did).

    5 out of 5 stars Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry.......2003-12-13

This edition is brilliant. The authors did a fantastic job in displaying such difficult information. The chapter summaries are key for holistic understanding, and the illustrations are very simplistic and highly memorable. Indeed, a job well done. It is perfect for any medical biochemistry course, and the added molecular biology completes the biochemical literature.

5 out of 5 stars The don juan for biochem books.......2003-09-19

As a Doctor of Pharmacy student, I came across this book during the beginning of the semester while taking biochemistry. This book in my opinion should be owned by all students in the medicinal field. Getting an A in the class was made alot easier to me just because of this book. I found myself using Harper's more than the original required class text book. At a great price compartively with information given..this book is a must. Ive also used Lippincotts Illustrated Biochemistry,as good as that book is, I would say spend the extra 15$ and get one that is alot more in detail.

    Book Description

Written with the non-major/allied health student in mind, the authors use common, everyday analogies to explain the many difficult microbiology concepts. Unlike any other allied health microbiology textbook on the market, the art program showcases beautiful illustrations with the use of bold, primary colors. This version of Foundations in Microbiology includes chapters 1 through 17 of the full text, teaching only the basic principles of microbiology and not covering the clinical aspects.

2 out of 5 stars Not the bargain you imagine.......2007-09-22

The price compared to the bookstore is great, but after purchasing and taking to class I realize why. It's missing several chapters at the end of the book. The hardcover you find in bookstores has at least 3 or more chapters. If your class doesn't go that far, then you're good. If it does...well then you're going to have problems. Everything else is fine, but you will be missing key information.

Highly experienced physicians and biologists clearly explain the basic technical knowledge needed to use AFM and demonstrate its multifarious uses in biomedicine and the life sciences. The applications range widely from morphostructural analyses of cellular structures, to the investigation of subcellular structures, to functional investigations, and reveal a powerful new way of looking at biological samples. The methods clearly demonstrate the advantages of AFM over traditional life science microscopy, among them simultaneous very high magnification and resolution, minimal tissue and cell preparation, and the ability to obtain different views of the sample from a single data collection.
