Book Description

Another defining moment in the evolution of operating systems
Small footprint operating systems, such as those driving the handheld devices that the baby dinosaurs are using on the cover, are just one of the cutting-edge applications you'll find in Silberschatz, Galvin, and Gagne's Operating System Concepts, Seventh Edition.
By staying current, remaining relevant, and adapting to emerging course needs, this market-leading text has continued to define the operating systems course. This Seventh Edition not only presents the latest and most relevant systems, it also digs deeper to uncover those fundamental concepts that have remained constant throughout the evolution of today's operation systems. With this strong conceptual foundation in place, students can more easily understand the details related to specific systems.
New Adaptations
* Increased coverage of user perspective in Chapter 1.
* Increased coverage of OS design throughout.
* A new chapter on real-time and embedded systems (Chapter 19).
* A new chapter on multimedia (Chapter 20).
* Additional coverage of security and protection.
* Additional coverage of distributed programming.
* New exercises at the end of each chapter.
* New programming exercises and projects at the end of each chapter.
* New student-focused pedagogy and a new two-color design to enhance the learning process.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but very, very dry.............2007-09-16

This book is very informative if your interested in learning how operating systems work. Unfortunately, Im not really interested in it, I just have to read it for a required class. The material is very dry so its hard to focus on what your reading.

3 out of 5 stars Not a very good one.......2007-03-11

I had to buy it for the course, but I really prefer Tanenbaum books, you can find more science. Pages reflect light so you should have indirect lighting, I had difficulties reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a Textbook.......2007-01-13

This was a required text for a college class. As a beginner in understanding how operating systems are created the first few chapters were easy to read and understand, but after that I needed the professor to be able to understand the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-21

We had to buy this book as part of our undergraduate Computer Engineering curriculum at The University of Akron. The book is very well written; I taught myself a lot by studying it.

This book was so good that I actually ended up telling one of my friends in Computer Engineering at Case about it, only to find out that 1) they use it there, too, and that 2) he thinks just as highly of the text.

3 out of 5 stars Try reading 3 pages without falling asleep.......2006-03-05

While "Operating Systems" is not exactly the sexiest subject in Computer Science, it ought to be possible to make it interesting, for example by taking a historical or problem solving approach.

Sadly, Silverschatz does none of this; in fact, often his book reads more like a tome on tax-law. Take this sentence, for example:

"If no process is executing in its critical section and some processes wish to enter their critical sections, then only those processes that are not executing in their remainder sections can participate in the decision on which will enter its critical section next, and this selection cannot be postponed indefinitely." (p.194, 7th ed.)

Silberschatz also has a tendency to make sweeping statements without giving examples, like what I am doing here. Admittedly, online chapters for different operating systems are available, but I think more examples within the main text itself would have helped to explain the concepts better.

The book also contains errors. For example it says that, "For instance, suppose that the queue usually has just one outstanding request. Then, all scheduling algorithms behave the same, because they have only one choice for where to move the disk head: They all behave like FCFS scheduling." (p.461, 7th ed.) While this is true for shortest-seek-time-first, LOOK and C-LOOK algorithms, it is wrong for SCAN and C-SCAN. They would continue moving the HD head from cylinder 0 to cylinder max, with worse performance than SSTF.

Since I do not have wide experience with other O/S books, I will not give a categorically "don't buy it!" recommendation. After all, Silberschatz is quite comprehensive and could be okay as a reference book. However, if you require a book to teach you O/S concepts, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Perhaps try a book by Tanenbaum? His prose is more readable.

Book Description

From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet.

Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.

Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.

5 out of 5 stars Domosaur PopUp Book.......2007-09-29

This book was absolutely amazing. The detail of each and every dinosaur was just phenomenal. I purchased several for Christmas presents. My 5yo grandson is soo crazy for anything dinosaur. I know it will make a big impression on him if no one else. Recommend child shoukld use this book with some adult supervision due to the intricate popups. The price was good too.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool book.......2007-09-26

My six year old loves this book. She keeps it on a special shelf so it does not get "messed-up". The pop ups are really detailed and this book has alot of information. It is not all about the art work. This is a really cool book for dino lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Dinosaur Book.......2007-09-23

This is an incredible book. The pop-ups are beautiful and intricate and the text informative. I can't wait to give it to my son for his 6th birthday. The only draw back I see is if my 1 year old gets his hands on it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book !.......2007-09-23

I ordered this book for my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She loves dinosaurs, and she loves books, so this was a great pick for her.

The pop-ups are breathtaking and the colors are vibrant, but if your child is rough on books this is not a book for them. My daughter knows I have to help her with this book because it seems that you could tear it easily if you didn't use caution. So we look at it together, and don't have any problems. The cover and spine seem well made.I bought it on sale for under 5 bucks so it was well worth the money. I don't know that I would have paid $30 (suggested retail) for it though.

It has some dino facts that are interesting to read but I think the pop- ups are the main attraction.

Our family has really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pop-Up Book!!.......2007-09-21

Gosh, fabulous pop-up book! I wish there was a higher rating than 5 as this book certainly deserves more!!

This book has more pop-ups than I have ever see in any book written/illustrated by other authors. The dinosaur pop-ups in this book are very intricate and beautifully done. The text is well done as well giving a information on each dinosaur. Robert Sabuda is definitely a master when it comes to the art of a pop-up book!

I am giving this book to my nephew and I am sure he'll love it. I only wish they had these kinds of pop-up books when I was a kid!

5 out of 5 stars Great for 1st-3rd Graders.......2007-07-28

While the writing isn't great, the stories are certainly entertaining, and are great reading for 1st-3rd Graders. The stories follow two siblings, Jack and Annie, who are magically transported to various places, and the various settings set the stage for some very fascinating, to the young reader, tales they will come to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars my son loves these books!.......2007-07-07

I've been reading to my son since he was two weeks old. He just had his fourth birthday, and I gave him this Magic Tree House box set. I thought he'd get bored pretty quick since there aren't illustrations on every page, but I was wrong. We read the first book in an afternoon, and he wanted to move straight on to the next one. We've since finished the first four and I've ordered the next box set, and while we wait we're re-reading the first four. Fantastic books!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to help children understand...............2007-08-13

I ordered this book for my 9 year old daughter to help explain to her about the changes going on in our family structure. The book explains a grown-up concept in a childs eyes with colorful pictures and good descriptions. My daughters therapist asked me to get this book for her and I am so happy I did. A must for any age child that is going through changes in their household. I would highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Covers the Spectrum of Divorce Topics.......2007-06-11

Dinosaurs Divorce is an important cornerstone of an all-too-small selection of children's books on this topic. With huge ambitions, this book addresses all kinds of topics relative to the breakup of the family and, for some families, these chapters will be appropriate and necessary. Others will find it too broad to make more than a chapter or two relevant to their own situation.

My biggest criticism of this book is that we would never leave it in my six-year-old daughter's room to let her digest it on her own. The best books, we've found, are those that we can read to her several nights at bedtime and then walk in later and find her "reading" them on her own. She spends a lot of time deciphering every detail of the illustrations and remembers the elements of the story that we read on each page. Dinosaurs Divorce is a great "tool for children", but not necessarily a great "children's book". The illustrations are far too scary on some pages and a few of the topics are too inappropriate for our situation to let her have access to the entire book. We have enough reality to discuss that does pertain to our home than to add a lot of other distressing possibilities.

I actually disagree, though, with the criticism of this book because it's "too reassuring". Yes, that's good information to have, some teachers may be looking for a book that is more realistic to situations they watch specific students go through, but every parent should want something that is reassuring. If they've forgotten to do that, the greatest impact WON'T be reminding the parents that it's necessary to do that once in a while.

Parents, teachers, and counselors looking for books on divorce may consider the following alternatives for specific needs. Please note that all of these books are story books and are written in a way that allow children to relate, enjoy the entire book, and hopefully empower them to talk about their own experiences with divorce.

For younger children (preschool) about living in two homes and making that a positive experience: Two Homes

For young children (4-8) about the initial discovery of divorce, including relieving the child's worry that they've caused the tension at home, especially during the delay between when parents have made the final decision and when they tell their children: The Most Important Thing

For younger children (2-6) about a post-divorce situation of living mostly at Dad's house and the inevitable worry that the divorce may have been the children's fault: Was It the Chocolate Pudding?: A Story For Little Kids About Divorce

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-05-15

This book helps a great deal in explaining to young children how divorce feels and how it changes the family. I used it in school counseling. Great resource in the elementary school setting.

5 out of 5 stars Another point of view.......2006-10-28

I read this book as a child, some time after my parents' divorce (age 7 or so). I'm all grown up now, but I still remember it fondly. It was comforting to me to know that many other kids were in my same situation, and I remember memorizing a lot of advice from it. In hindsight I can see just how valuable the advice was, tips like not needing to take sides or deliver messages between parents. In the end, this book really helped me to be comfortable and understanding about divorce and having two families. It was easy for me to understand, and I loved the dinosaurs. Take it from somebody who's been there -- this is an excellent book!

4 out of 5 stars Use your judgement, and pick and choose.......2006-09-14

As a new elementary guidance counselor, I haven't found a kids' book on divorce yet that I LOVE. Meanwhile, this is useful. It covers several aspects of divorce. It is too long to use the whole thing in one sitting with young children, and not all of it applies in every situation or is appropriate with every age group. However, it's fairly easy to select what you think is helpful and appropriate for your child(ren) because of the comic-book format and different chapters on different topics (ie. Having Two Homes, Telling Your Friends, Meeting Parents' New Friends).

I used this with a pre-1st class last week. I chose the sections I thought most applicable and paraphrased, partly for simplicity and partly to age-appropriately soften some negative aspects, like using "parents can't get along anymore" but leaving out "don't love each other". And, like other reviewers, I thought the panes on Mom taking anger at Dad out on Son, and Mom with alcohol and pills to illustrate "behaving in ways that hurt themselves and the rest of the family" were too mature and scary concepts for that age group! However, it was a great tool to start a helpful and positive conversation.

"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"

Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This good-natured nighttime book is sure to be a winner (even though it might inspire a few noisy dinosaur antics), especially as it's written by Jane Yolen, prolific Caldecott Medalist author of Owl Moon. Yolen and Mark Teague have teamed up to create a fun, silly, playful read-aloud. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

What if a dinosaur catches the flu?Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?Does he fling his medicine out of the door? Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best. As in their first dinosaur book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and hilarious pictures.

I love everything about this book. My 10 month old will sit through this book and just look at all the beautiful colors and laugh at the silly things the dinosaur does.

5 out of 5 stars Charming story, Captivating illustrations, Good message.......2007-08-15

Open the book to discover an enormous Tyrannosaurus Rex on a ridiculously small bed with his human father telling him it's time for bed. Each whimsical illustration tells the story of dinosaurs preparing for bed and asks if they pout, stomp their feet or cry at bedtime. In the end we learn that dinosaurs don't put up a stink, but instead give big hugs and kisses before going to bed. The illustrations are fun and the story is sweet with a great message subtly telling children the right way to go to bed. (It's perfect for any parent who has ever tried to put a stubborn child to sleep!)

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-07-21

My daughter loves this book. Mark Teague illustrates this book fantastically. The dinosaurs have so much emotion in their faces you can read your own childs face in each dinosaur. We have read this so much my little 3 year old memorized it. This is an absolutely amazing book and would be great to add to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect goodnight book!.......2007-06-02

I have 3 year old twins and they love this book so much that they know all the words by heart, and it is fun to act out what is said on each page, we read several stories before bed, and this is their favorite one.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-05-03

My girls and I love this book! It is the perfect rhyming book with ample opportunities to add life to it while you read. My girls love to stomp their feet on the floor, and we all stop when we get to "does a dinosaur" and real loud all three of us ROAR and they get such a kick out of that. They also like to show me the Mama and the Daddy at different points. We also have the clean up book and that is equally as good. And the illustrations are fantastic. A HUGE fan of this author/illustrator and I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water! The second astonishing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA book from Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart is about to pop up everywhere.

While dinosaurs patrolled the lands, massive prehistoric sharks, giant scorpions, and colossal squid cruised the ancient oceans - most with just one thing in mind: eat or be eaten. In this companion volume to the best-selling ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS, pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart explore the prehistoric underwater world, where monsters like megalodon ruled the waves.

Full of captivating facts and more than 35 breathtaking pop-ups, this incredible volume is sure to astonish and amaze everyone from budding marine biologists to confirmed landlubbers. After all, if prehistoric coelacanths and crocodiles are still around, what else might be lurking in today's largely unexplored oceans?

Absolutely gorgeous and intriguing pop-ups. Good information about the sharks and sea monsters. I love all things by Robert Sabuda. Good for kids 4 and older.

This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent pop up book, reading is complicated.......2007-08-16

Cool book. Reading is over the age category of my daughters, but they simply enjoy the pop ups.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!!!.......2007-08-13

This book is unbelievable! The attention to detail is fantastic. Absolute value for money and a must for any child who is as taken with sharks dinosaurs as my son is.

Robert Sabuda always does a fantastic job and this is just another example of an exciting, educational pop-up book.

Book Description

What a perfect gift. Perfect for baby showers. Irresistible for a newborn, or for a one-, two-, even a three-year-old’s birthday. Ideal as a set that grandparents, aunts and uncles, in-laws, and close personal friends of the baby (babies have close personal friends?) will find particularly perfect to give. Housed in a bold, happy slipcase are three bestselling Boynton on Board books: Barnyard Dance!, Oh My Oh My Oh My Dinosaurs!, and Pajama Time!

It’s the wonderfulest introduction to the world of Boynton—square-dancing pigs and sheep, wide-eyed dinosaurs, and a sleepy, PJ-clad menagerie. The books, which in their chunkiness present a deliciously tactile handful for little readers, sport die-cut covers that reveal a glimpse of the fun inside. And what fun it is! Big, bold, humorous, rhyming verses, and those ever-whimsical illustrations that have made Sandra Boynton one of America’s best-loved artists. A box of pure read-aloud pleasure.

As usual, great books for kids. Boynton's sense of humor and the cadence of the words she uses keeps kids and moms intrigued.

5 out of 5 stars Boyton Rocks!.......2007-09-24

Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!

5 out of 5 stars Fun for parents, too!.......2007-09-15

Since becoming parents 7 1/2 years ago, we have read MANY MANY MANY children's books and I can easily say that Sandra Boynton is our family's favorite author. The illustrations are adorable and the stories are funny, sweet, silly, and quick (which is a huge bonus if it's aready past bedtime). Our hands-down favorite is "Barnyard Dance"...it's especially funny if you can read it as if you're actually the caller at a hoedown. Another favorite is "But Not the Hippopotamus" and "Horns to Toes and In Between" which is great for teaching body parts. If you're looking for silly, cute, and funny, Sandra's books do not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Great for reading over and over!.......2007-09-11

My grandson is 2 years old and he loves thes books. The illustrations are fun and colorful and the verses rhyme and are catchy. After I read one of the books to him he sits down and "reads" it to himself, explaining the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Little ones love these books!.......2007-08-25

I love Sandra Boynton, and this collection has some of my favorites. I read them to my 1 month old and she loves to listen. I know they will be her favorites for several years to come. THe art is fun and colorful without being too busy for young eyes, and the rymes are cute and pleasant for young ears. We even use some of the words from Barnyard Dance during other play time ("with a neigh and a moo and a cockadoodledoo, another little promenade two by two)!

5 out of 5 stars Dinosaurs are great!.......2007-09-28

This has fast become my son's favorite book! He asks for it all the time and is also learning good manners too!

5 out of 5 stars My grandkids.......2007-08-23

I bought this book for my grandson, (2), but my grand-daughter, (4), also loves it. The book is in a series and since my grandson loves it so much I am buying more of the series. I like it because he can't rip it up and the pictures are so clear that we can use it for educational purposes and they don't even know it.

2 out of 5 stars Fun book but badly translated.......2007-07-12

I bought this book so my father who is Peruvian would have a Spanish book to share with my son. Unfortunately, he says that the translation is terrible. So, being a good Papa, he just makes up the story according to the pictures. My son doesn't mind because he so loves the dinos and their mischievous behavior.
I'm disappointed because I thought I'd be able to read it to him and work on my own Spanish which I won't be doing since it's not a good translation.
I got a second opinion from a Spanish-speaking friend and she agrees that the translation is not very good.

5 out of 5 stars A DINO HIT.......2007-02-15

My three yr old grandson loves this book and he is currently very
fascinated by Dinosaurs. It gets the message across about a clean
room and at the same time it is laugh out loud funny. The clever
illustrations are a winner too. You won't go wrong with this fun
book! Thanks Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Helps children deal with death.......2007-09-01

My eight year old son struggled with the death of an uncle. We found this book at the local library. He read it and then recommended that I read it - "it will help you too, mom." We had to purchase our own copy and got one for our school's guidance office. Great way to remember a loved one and deal with the loss at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bedtime story...but therapeutic for those who are grieving.......2007-06-07

This book is not meant as a soothing bedtime story. It is a direct, frank look at death and grief, designed for children who are confronting the death of a loved one. I know that some reviewers were disturbed by the fact that this book covers death by suicide and homicide, but from my position providing counseling in schools, I can say that I have found that to be one of the book's assets, as (unfortunately) I counseling kids who have lost loved ones to suicide and homicide. This book is rather long, partiuclarly because it is written in a comic book type format, with many captions and speech bubbles. I would highly suggest that you do NOT try to read the whole book to a child in one sitting. The book is broken up into sections (How Do People Die? Feelings About Death, etc.), and those are good guidelines for starting/stopping. Read one section and talk. Listen. Answer questions. Draw. And let it be. Try another section later. Don't feel that you have to read all of the sections. Just go with what's relevant for your family. I have found that this is a fabulous book to get kids talking. It's non-threatening. They can choose to identify with the dinosaurs in the book or not. Also, Amazon says this is for ages 4-8. I would say that this is not the best book for the younger set (4-5), and I would extend the upper range to 13 (or even older). Young teens like the comic book style, and because the text does not talk down to its readers, they find the content relevant as well.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't relate to anything real.......2007-03-08

I did not enjoy this book and would not use it in my work.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful, easy to use only the relevant parts.......2007-01-05

My four year old daughter is grappling with death because the mother of one her friends just died very suddenly. We've found this book to be helpful in making things concrete for her, 4 year olds aren't really into abstractions.

I understand some people's reservations about the section on suicide; since my daughter is still in the early stages of reading we just skip it. I quite liked the idea of introducing the possibility of helping others through organ donation, but that's just me.

I must disagree with the reviewers who criticized the hamster to grandparent progression, it seemed to answer the material issues on something relatively minor (a rodent) before the more frightening death of a grown-up. I certainly was never as upset about a pet hamster of mine dying as I was about a person, so that seems a safe way to get started.

Anyway, our daughter's tendency is to ask a lot of questions, so my wife and I have both been glad to have something that covers the bases and saves us from having to completely wing it (the more usual response!)

1 out of 5 stars Preview first - way too graphic for our family.......2006-10-10

I had intended to use this book to help my 7-year-old but when I previewed it, I found it to be a case of "too much too soon." It appeared the author tried to address every conceivable way a child might encounter death but, for my child, it would have introduced MANY more fears than it alleviated. Many of the illustrations were especially disturbing. Having a child wail "can we keep our house?" as the obituaries float around the picture was too much. Introducing death by substance abuse and suicide was too much. Discussing the donation of eyes to an eye bank or having the word "autopsy" in the glossary was too much. For young children facing death and the grief process for the first time, I would use extreme caution if considering this book. My child would have had nightmares for ages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book as taught us a lot!.......2007-07-13

I bought a bunch of books for my 4 year old son when I learned he was teasing the other kids at his preschool. This was one of them. He loves this book, and I notice that he has gotten so much better playing with other children since we started reading this book.

It has been so effective that I simply say "Jimmy, is that how you be a good friend?" when I feel he is being unkind, and he will answer me, using "good friend" examples from the book, and immediately change his behavior. He also tells other children how they can be "good Friends" too.

Unfortunatley, as he nears the age of being a "tattle tale", he is very quick to point out when other children aren't being "good friends" and tells them "You need to read Mommy's book." LOL

I highly recommend to any parent.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Kids.......2007-02-22

I enjoyed the book. It will help my students become better friends with personal ideas and reasons.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-01-10

Reinforces the criteria and requirements that kids need to know to be a "GOOD" friend in easy to understand examples.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2007-01-04

I bought this book to find out how to help my 10 year old with some basic friendship issues. This book was VERY basic and geared for a younger child, but I feel that it is a great book for any parent. My daughter read it also and said that she thought it was very helpful, but a little too "kiddy" for her taste.

5 out of 5 stars Kid's Review.......2006-10-19

I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.
