Book Description

Race in the Making provides a new understanding of how people conceptualize social categories and shows why this knowledge is so readily recruited to create and maintain systems of unequal power.

Hirschfeld argues that knowledge of race is not derived from observations of physical difference nor does it develop in the same way as knowledge of other social categories. Instead, his central claim is that racial thinking is the product of a special-purpose cognitive competence for understanding and representing human kinds. The book also challenges the conventional wisdom that race is purely a social construction by demonstrating that a common set of abstract principles underlies all systems of racial thinking, whatever other historical and cultural specificities may be associated with them.

Starting from the commonplace observation that race is a category of both power and the mind, Race in the Making directly tackles this issue. Through a sustained exploration of continuity and change in the child's notion of race and across historical variations in the race concept, Hirschfeld shows that a singular commonsense theory about human kinds constrains the way racial thinking changes, whether in historical time or during childhood.

After surveying the literature on the development of a cultural psychology of race, Hirschfeld presents original studies that examine children's (and occasionally adults') representations of race. He sketches how a jointly cultural and psychological approach to race might proceed, showing how this approach yields new insights into the emergence and elaboration of racial thinking.

3 out of 5 stars Empirically useful, conceptually silly.......2001-06-10

The common claim that young children have to be taught to distinguish races is simply not true. It has been studied extensively in controlled experiments. In Race in the Making, the liberal U. of Michigan anthropology professor Lawrence A. Hirschfeld sums up the findings: "As comforting as this view may be, children, I will show in this book, are more than aware of diversity; they are driven by endogenous curiosity to uncover it. Children, I will also show, do not believe race to be a superficial quality of the world. Multicultural curricula aside, few people believe that race is only skin deep. Certainly few 3-year-olds do. They believe that race is an intrinsic, immutable, and essential aspect of a person's identity. Moreover, they seem to come to this conclusion on their own. They do not need to be taught that race is a deep property, they know it themselves already."

For example, if you show preschoolers drawings of people and ask them to match the children with their parents, they will consistently tell you that the skinny white child is the child of the fat white parent, while the fat black child belongs to the skinny black parent (or vice-versa).

It seems obvious to me why little kids pay close attention to race. It's crucial for them to understand who is related to whom, and racial traits provide a more reliable guide than even body shape. (In technical terms, racial traits tend to be have higher narrow heritability coefficient than other traits like body shape.) The reason racial traits tend to be highly heritable and thus highly useful in multiracial situations for identifying family members is because race is family: a racial group is merely an extremely extended family that inbreeds to some degree.

Unfortunately, Hirschfeld gets himself tangled up in his own underwear trying to explain his findings. Being a good modern liberal, he believes that Race Does Not Exist. He never really gets himself untangled on this subject. He seems completely unaware of the fact that racial groups are just big extended families. In contrast, Occam's razor suggests that the reason we pay attention to racial resemblances is the same reason we pay attention to family resemblances.

Book Description

How should education respond to the challenges of an increasingly mediated world? How can it enable young people to become active, critical participants in the media culture that surrounds them? And how can it keep pace with the complex technological, cultural and economic changes that are currently reshaping the contemporary media environment? These are some of the questions that arise in the area of media education ndash; or media literacy, as it is sometimes called ndash; which is gradually becoming recognized as a key aspect of the school curriculum in many countries. This book takes account of recent changes both in the media and in young peoplersquo;s lives, and provides an accessible and cogent set of principles on which the media curriculum should be based, and a clear rationale for pedagogic practice. It outlines how media educators should respond to contemporary social, political and technological developments, and to the changing role and function of education itself. David Buckingham is one of the leading international experts in the field. He has more than twenty yearsrsquo; experience in media education as a teacher and researcher, and has lectured on the topic around the world. Media Education represents a distillation of his key arguments, and an authoritative analysis of the challenges that lie ahead for media educators.

5 out of 5 stars Buckingham's New Book Hits the spot.......2004-03-04

David Buckingham knows media education. This new text combines his vast knowledge of how media education SHOULD work in the classroom with practical theory. I think this is one of THE BEST texts available today!

What I like about this text are the practical examples he provides from his own work and those who work with him. He is also not afraid to be critical of others who claim THEIR way of teaching media education is the ONLY way.

For those of us in the US, this book is the bible; an essential guide for teaching media education and inplementing effective pedagogy.

It you are a novice or someone who has been doing media literacy work for some time, you will find this text invaluable. I highly recommend it. You won't be sorry.

Book Description

Major problems exist of differently diagnosing language-minority children who are in the process of learning English as a second language, and even sometimes show low levels of language proficiency. These children are often over-represented in special education classes when, in fact, they are normal children or even superior in the process of learning English as a second language. These children are also under-represented in gifted classes due to inappropriate tests and models used, as well as negative attitudes and lack of knowledge on the part of the teachers and evaluators. This edited volume seeks to increase the availability of research-derived knowledge and educational applications in the field of second-language learning. Virginia Gonzalez offers a rare and highly creative approach to second language acquisition research by applying contemporary cognitive psychology theory as a framework for investigating bilingual issues. The book offers a coherent and unified philosophy and context, presenting original research studies that provide a multidimensional socioeducational view to second-language learning and instruction in children and adults. Gonzalez and her colleagues assume the identity of the "Ethnic-Researcher," thereby emphasizing the need to include cultural and linguistic factors when studying, assessing, and instructing second-language learners. School psychologists, therapists, social workers.

5 out of 5 stars Second Language Learning.......2000-03-29

This book gives great reviews of theories and how they look in practice. The book focuses more on Spanish/English speaking students, but provides invaluable insight into what is happening with language acquisition. The chapters on assessment are priceless. Non bias assessment is very important and this book gives definitions and ideas for assessment. A chapter is also included regarding special education and minority students. Once again, she offers a statement of the problem, assessment modes, and methods. This book provides what teachers need to know in order to educate language minority children in thier classroom. It is easy to read and a book that is hard to put down. There is so much fantastic information is this book that it is a definate keeper!

    Book Description

Imitation is not the low-level, cognitively undemanding behavior it is often assumed to be, but rather -- along with language and the ability to understand other minds -- one of a trio of related capacities that are fundamental to human mentality. In these landmark volumes, leading researchers across a range of disciplines provide a state-of-the-art view of imitation, integrating the latest findings and theories with reviews of seminal work, and revealing why imitation is a topic of such intense current scientific interest. Perspectives are drawn from neuroscience and brain imaging, animal and developmental psychology, primatology, ethology, philosophy, anthropology, media studies, economics, sociology, education, and law. These volumes provide a resource that makes this research accessible across disciplines and clarifies its importance for the social sciences and philosophy as well as for the cognitive sciences. As a further aid to cross-fertilization, each volume includes extensive interdisciplinary commentary and discussion.

The first volume considers possible mechanisms of imitation, including discussion of mirror systems, ideomotor and common coding theories, and the possibility of "shared circuits" for control, imitation, and simulation, and then takes up imitation in animals, with illuminating comparisons to human imitation. The second volume focuses first on the roles of imitation in human development and in learning to understand the minds of others, and then on the broader social and cultural roles and functions of imitation, including discussions of meme theory and cultural evolution, and of the pervasive imitative tendencies of normal adults and their relevance for understanding the effects of the media on human behavior.

3 out of 5 stars Perspectives on Learning Organizations.......2002-07-19

As far as I can see it is a book all about different perspectives, a book that adds on to the list of books that focus on the theoretical and/or philosophical sides of learning organizations. As such it is a good book, with contributions from 40 acknowledged authors/researchers.
The book is built up around four parts:
    - Guiding ideas
    - Theories/Methods/Processes
    - Infrastructure
    - Arenas of Practice
The book is packed with lots of good ideas that may form a base for further exploration in the field. Most of it is well edited, even though there is some extra "fluff" in some of the articles.
It is a good introduction to "learning organizations", but I will hesitate to call it a "how-to"-book . . . .

4 out of 5 stars strong collection of essays.......2001-12-13

I've had to read a slew of leadership books for my doctorate -- as for a collection of thoughtful essays, this is one of the best. It's well organized, well laid out and has almost every major thinker represented. It's got theoretical parts, practical parts and questions for down the road. The essays span all types of learning organizations: schools, hospitals, companies, etc... It's a bit long, but if you take it piece by piece, this is a very enjoyable and informative collection. Highly recommended and well-conceived.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of ideas, theory, and practice!.......1999-09-23

What is a learning organization? What are the principles upon which a learning organization is built? What is needed to develop a culture that embraces these principles? The concept of the learning organization began several decades ago, but only recently has it gained widespread recognition among business people and academics alike. This is in part due to the success of Peter Senge's 1990 book The Fifth Discipline and his pragmatic, step-by-step guide, The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook (1994).

Thirty-nine of the most respected scholars and practitioners come together to share a comprehensive explanation of the ideas, principles, attitudes, skills, systems, and infrastructure needed to create the ideal workplace of the future. Authors including MIT's Fred Kofman and Peter Senge, Harvard's Rosabeth Kanter, and London Business School's Charles Handy are recognized worldwide for their work in teaching organizations about change, systems thinking, organizational development, diversity, and total quality management.

The author's essays are categorized into five main parts. Part One: Guiding Ideas primes our intellect by posing questions and sharing ideas about what learning organizations represent. Part Two: Theories/Methods/Processes presents how stories, dialogue, coaching, systems thinking, and other learning tools facilitate the creation of learning organizations. Part Three: Infrastructure identifies some of the ways we must change what we do to achieve maximum learning potential. Part Four: Arenas of Practice identifies various workplaces and takes a look at how to build learning organizations within them. Case studies are used to describe how learning organizations are working in various organizational settings.

This book is written for practitioners, scholars, and active participants of adult learning environments. The principles and practices can apply to any organization that wishes to increase its learning potential, including businesses, schools, health care, and governmental organizations.

The rate at which organizations and individuals learn must keep up with the ever-changing environment that surrounds them. This is a global environment that requires us to communicate and learn from our co-workers, customers, clients, competitors, investors, friends, and family. Our world is becoming increasingly interconnected and it would be prudent to take advantage of that fact. We are not islands and as such, we cannot learn alone. The more skilled we become at applying the breadth of knowledge and skills that are presented in this book on becoming a learning organization, the more prepared we will be for competing in the Knowledge Era.

5 out of 5 stars Great lessons for living in corporate America..........2006-07-23

This book provides good information regarding the reasons corporations downsize, the effects of downsizing and offers methods to cope with the changing scene. I bought it for my husband, who's national company has continually cut staff and expected more from those employees left behind. I also bought it for myself, so I can understand the pressure my husband is working under.

2 out of 5 stars A nice case study, but outmoded for the new millenium.......2005-10-07

Ms. King's book basically attempts to explain the psychology behind the insecurities people experience during a layoff situation and what managers can do to help alleviate all of the negative feelings associated with it. The book seems to be concentrated on employees who have worked in the same job forever and don't know how to cope when faced with losing it. Its all about how to make people who won't quit feel better about staying!!!! Doesn't make much sense...and doesn't really apply today. During the past ten years since this was published, layoffs and job changes have become a fact of life in the corporate world, not a shocking "once in a lifetime" event as the book portrays it. Most now know that when you see the danger signs of downsizing, its time to send out resumes...plain and simple. The only ones who stay or get laid off are generally the low performers, and most managers are not eager to find "seven powerful lessons" on how to make them feel wanted again. Definitely geared for the over 45 crowd. I also didn't like the way the ideas were presented (in the form of a story) - it was easy to "get lost". What really blows me away is that this thing is still in print.

      Book Description

This book explores the basic principles and processes underlying the design and development of effective instructional materials for all types of media, ranging from print to hypermedia applications such as the Web. "Self-Directed" or "Self-Instructional" learning takes place when individuals work with instructional materials without direct supervision or guidance from an instructor. This book's purpose is to provide instructional designers and media developers an opportunity to consider ways and means to encourage truly self-directed learning. Five chapters are titled Introduction; Expository Self Instruction: The Good Tutorial; Inquiry-Based Self-Instruction; Issues in Self-Instruction and Self-Directed Learning; Self-Directed Learning: A Final Look. For anyone interested in curriculum development or developing educational technology.

3 out of 5 stars Reflective, Useful Foundations and Tools.......2003-04-18

Of interest to course designers, educational technology developers and those responsible for self directed learning ( including individuals), "Designs for Self-Instruction" offers a reference guide to help you ground projects with solid theory & practice.

The well referenced, somewhat dry and simply illustrated chapters span:
      - situation, principles, content of self instruction
      - programmed instruction, implied contract, content, plan
      - development
      - motivation, styles
      - collaborative settings

It could be improved with more examples of tools from software world (demo or websites?) and a broader context (not just educational research but also corporate training, consultants, eLearning, virtual universities). Despite that, worthwhile and useful.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughful and valuable guide for professional developers.......1999-06-20

Designs for Self-Instruction provides instructional designers and developers with a comprehensive and thoughtful examination of self-instruction. From its theoretical underpinings to practical suggestions for execution, this book transcends any single medium, while applying to all. Its focus is steadfastly and purely instruction - not job support or job aids; not web design or web mastery; not anything more or less than the tenets and philosophies touching specifically on self-instruction.

The author writes in an accessible style, yet with authority and wisdom. For many reasons, this small volume is an invaluable addition to any professional designer's library.

        Book Description

Isn't acceleration just for gifted kids? This is a common assumption when we think about who benefits from efforts to accelerate student learning. For generations, students identified as gifted have been separated from other students and provided enriched learning opportunities many adults believe would be wasted on other students. More recently, in response to failed efforts to remediate low-achieving students, the term has been extended to efforts to reverse the negative effects of grade retention for many low-achieving students. The most promising application of the term involves efforts to extend the curriculum and instruction usually reserved for gifted students to all students.Accelerating the Learning of All Students: Cultivating Culture Change in Schools, Classrooms, and Individuals explores the multiple applications of the term "acceleration" and the assumptions that shape schools, classrooms, and individuals that encourage and discourage efforts to accelerate the learning of all students. This book begins with an exploration of the multiple definitions of acceleration, examining the social and historical context that led to an emphasis on labeling and sorting students. Descriptions of exemplary programs geared to each group of students provide useful ideas for addressing special needs of students. These descriptions also illustrate the wisdom of providing a rich, challenging learning experience to all students rather than focussing on separating them for special instruction. The book proceeds to explore the conditions in schools and classrooms that facilitate or hinder efforts to accelerate learning of all students. Focusing on the importance of changing individuals' assumptions about students, adult roles in schools, acceptable educational practices, appropriate communication patterns and the value of change, the book ends with a challenge to all of us to assume responsibility for making schools a better place for all students.

Written by authors who bring a wealth of experiences to this topic, Christine Finnan and Julie D. Swanson draw on their own research and experience and on current research to provide a much-needed exploration of issues surrounding efforts to effectively educate all students. Accelerating the Learning of All Students provides hope to all citizens and educators that the dismal history of educating low-income students can be turned around, and that all students can be provided the rich, engaging educational experience that has historically been reserved only for those identified as gifted.
