I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday. He loves the Magic School Bus series and he loves Dinosaurs. This was the perfect gift for him. We have read it a few times already. It does not read as smooth as the other books in the series, but it keeps his interest and makes him want to read.

I wasn't familiar with the Magic School Bus series until I visited my family this past weekend--my 3-year old niece absolutely loved this book! Unconventional teacher Mrs. Frizzle takes her students on an archeological dig, but she then decides to give them a real look at dinosaurs by loading them onto her magic school bus and traveling back in time. The main body of the story is only about 5 lines per page, making the book appropriate for reading to younger children, but there is also a wealth of additional information included in surrounding insets, making the book ideal for an older beginning reader as well (and fun for adults, too!). The pictures are extremely detailed and colorful, and the illustrated children portray a variety of ethnic appearances. Given my niece's reaction, I'd highly recommend this book for aged 2-3 and up.

Norbert Aujoulat's definitive book on the Lascaux caves in France, the artistic masterpiece of the Old Stone Age, is the next best thing to being there. That's handy, since you can't go there yourself. Only a few scientists are permitted to visit Lascaux anymore, most eminent among them the author, who heads the parietal art department at the National Center of Prehistory. With impressive authority, he eIaborates the geology, archaeology, and ethology of the site so famously discovered by two spelunking teenagers in 1940, 18,000 years after the cave's heyday. In a way, the book is like the cave itself: a bit daunting, but enormously rewarding the effort. You must traverse great stalagmites of thoroughgoing scientific text translated from French, and are rewarded by enormous vistas of animals painted and scratched on the vast stone walls—262 color illustrations of the most important of the 1,963 images in the cave, including 915 animals and one human.

Aujoulat isn't just a collector of facts, he's a shrewd deducer. Although some naïve early viewers thought the oddly short-legged horses on the walls indicated the Lascaux artists were stylizing what they saw (or ineptly rendering it), Aujoulat uses photographs of modern wild horses to show that the horses were accurately depicted during the cold season when their winter coats changed their shape. Noting that the species appear in order—horse, auroch, stag—he notes that each is depicted during its mating season (respectively winter, summer, and fall). Apparently, the cave symbolized the sky, and the animals represented the cycle of seasons and the creation of life. One wishes Aujoulat had relaxed his scientific rigor just enough to speculate about what these stunning images might have meant to our ancestors, but his job is to explain precisely how they made the art and the natural causes of the stony canvas. --Tim Appelo

    Book Description

Discovered by chance by two boys in France in 1940, the cave of Lascaux-with its radiant wall paintings of bison, aurochs, horses, and deer-offers us the most astonishing view we have of the shadowy, powerful animal world of the Old Stone Age some 18,000 years ago. In the early 1960s, when it became clear that the paintings were beginning to fade as countless tourists flocked to see them, the cave was sealed, ancient atmospheric conditions were restored, and even scientists were allowed to enter the cave only a few hours each week. Today this prehistoric monument remains closed to the public.

Following 10 years of research on the Lascaux cave, the prehistorian and geologist Norbert Aujoulat offers us his stunning interpretation of the paintings. In this lavishly illustrated volume, packed with new photographs, maps, and explanatory diagrams of the paintings, he takes us on a journey from the entrance of the cave back to its deepest and most hidden parts. In the process, he provides us with new insight into these remarkable works, tracing the birth of ancient mythologies-and of art. AUTHOR BIO: Norbert Aujoulat, geologist and prehistorian, is head of the department of parietal art at the National Center of Prehistory, France. From 1989 to 1999 he directed the research on the cave of Lascaux. He is the author of numerous publications on cave art and archaeology.

    Book Description

Here is the first complete portrait of the legendary flying dragons of deep time–the pterosaurs–designed for non-specialists, yet founded on the real science of these bizarre creatures. Presented lucidly and accessibly by one of the world’s leading experts, David Unwin’s book is built on a mountain of new fossil discoveries and the latest research.

About 220 millions years ago, a group of reptiles took to the Earth’s vast and open skies. No longer tethered to the ground, the earliest pterosaurs evolved into a multitude of diverse forms, spread around the globe, and ruled the skies until they went extinct along with the dinosaurs about 65 millions years ago, rarely leaving fossils as a record of their existence. What they did leave was a mystery for paleontologists to solve; an enigma so difficult to crack that it took centuries of false starts and missteps before the path to a true understanding of pterosaurs was uncovered.

Now, an understanding of the fundamental nature of these strange creatures is finally possible. In the last 15 years, stunning new fossil finds and significant advances in technology have led to a breakthrough in our knowledge of pterosaurs. New fossils of the earliest species were discovered in Italy, a remarkably well-preserved and complete wing was found in Central Asia, and, most extraordinarily, a pterosaur embryo inside an egg was unearthed in China. CAT scanning has let researchers glimpse inside pterosaur skulls and construct three-dimensional images of their bodies from crushed bones, and modern techniques for analyzing relationships between species have revealed surprising insights into the evolution of the group.

Drawing on these and other advances, David Unwin, caretaker of Archaeopteryx and curator at the Museum of Natural History in Berlin, paints pterosaurs and their world more vividly than has previously been possible. He eloquently reconstructs their biology and behavior. Pterosaurs weren’t scaly like dinosaurs, but hairy; most were brightly colored and adorned with remarkable head crests; they were excellent fliers with physiologically sophisticated wings; they walked on all fours; and varied in size from eight inches to forty feet in wingspan. He shows how they lived their lives, raised their young, and interacted with the different environments of Mesozoic Earth. Then, building on his thorough examination of their anatomy and lifestyle, and using the powerful technique of cladistic analysis, Unwin unravels the evolutionary history of pterosaurs and establishes their place in the one great tree of life.

Packed with 95 color and 30 black and white illustrations–including 10 full-page original color paintings that are scientific recreations of different pterosaur species–The Pterosaurs From Deep Time takes readers on an wondrous expedition back through the lost world of the Earth’s deep past.

    4 out of 5 stars Great work.......2006-12-16

The pterosaurs were the group of flying reptiles (probably) that lived during the time of dinosaurs. Little was known about them until the last three decades when numerous fossil finds on multiple continents cleared up many things about them such as their reproduction (eggs), skeletal structure (hollow bones with air sacs), development (continuous growth), etc... This book summarizes all of this knowledge into one work that is easy to read, very informative, and well organized. The text is interspersed with numerous figures ranging from photos and micrographs of fossils to color illustrations. The book's chapters focus on specific parts of the pterosaus such as their flying skills, walking skills, childhood, etc... The author does a great job of describing what is known about pterosaurs, what is unknown, and how scientists have arrived at these conclusions. The use of science is quite liberal as the author refers to physics, aerodynamics, biochemistry, taxonomy and other fields in the explanation of the book's concepts. As such, I would not recommend it for anyone without a high school diploma at least. But for those with a good general background in science, this book is quite enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard.......2006-03-22

An outstanding work, David Unwin's book 'The Pterosaurs from Deep Time' should be considered the standard by which other popular (and even textbook!) books on paleontology should be compared. If only something similar could be written about the various sea-reptiles of the Mesozoic! Very well researched, excellent diagrams, photos and artwork, all the latest information, truly brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Best Pterosaur book in print.......2005-11-27

This is by far the best book on pterosaurs for the non-technical reader in print. Only the 1990 or 1991 extremely well-illustrated _Illustrated Encyclopedia of Pterosaurs_ by Peter Wellenhoffer has better photos and artwork; it is out of print and dated in many ways (and difficult to find at a reasonable price). Unwin discusses a number of recent fossil finds, including discoveries of pterosaur eggs with embryos from the Upper Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous Lianong Province of China, and eggs from other deposits as well. I was particularly impressed by the specimen that had the fragment of plant material lodged in the lower jaw of the animal, keeping the pterosaur from being able to feed or close its mouth properly. In spite of the fragile and often fragmentary nature of the fossil record for pterosaurs, there are some really fantastic specimens turning up from time to time.

Giving this book less than 5 stars is shameful!

If you are interested in pterosaurs, BUY THIS BOOK!

The only problem I had with this book was that the Publisher originally set a publication date in the spring of 2005. I ordered well in advance, but was dismayed to see that the date of publication was continuously pushed back; everytime I checked the date was moved. I didn't get my copy until the end of August/early September.

4 out of 5 stars Flying, landing and laying.......2005-11-10

My credentials. I work on pterosaurs (among other things) at the University of Portsmouth, UK.

I'm a pal of Dave Unwin (he looks like Bill Clinton). I have worked with him on ocassions on problems of pterosaur anatomy. He borrowed my house to write part of this book and I was one of several so-called 'experts' invited to read the book as he wrote it. I read every single word two or three times and even read one chapter while flying over his mum's house in Uttoxeter. I chuckled at some of the jokes, and deleted a few in case they trivialised his case. A wry sense of humour and a vivid imagination are a part of the charm of this book. Anyway, just in case you think I am biased by association, I can assure you that this brief review is heartfelt and honest.

This book is an excellent, entertaining and highly informative account of the biology of a group of animals that are (were), without doubt among the most fascinating creatures to have walked and flew the planet. Unwin's style is relaxed and makes reading a pleasure. Pretty well every aspect of pterosaur biology and evolutionary history is touched on. He makes good clear arguments for our deductions about these wonderful animal's behaviour, physiology and locomotion. Where the evidence is vague, or absent he says so.

One exciting aspect is the case Unwin makes for precocious flight in pterosaurs. Rare examples of fossil pterosaur eggs with embryos inside (if there were no embryos we wouldn't have recognised them as eggs) show that just bgefore hatching pterosaur babies had all of their skeleton fully formed and had wing bones with pretty well the same ratios as found in adults. Along with very rare examples of fossilised baby pterosaurs found in deposits formed miles away from land, this suggests that pterosaurs could fly soon after hatching. That might not be so remarkable, but when one consider that a baby pterosaur with a wing span comparable to a thrush then goes onto to achieve a wingspan greater than a Spitfire it seems to be quite remarkable.

I am recommending this book to anyone with an interest in natural history or flight.. it certainly is not just for dinophiles.

And if anyone reads the acknowledgments in this book, you might like to know that we no longer use flea spray, but instead drop that funny stuff on the back of the cats' necks now... it does the trick.

    5 out of 5 stars Norway.......2005-10-18

This book is great!! It gives an in depth vieu on these animal evolved and functioned, without getting the reader bogged down in dry technical descriptions. I recommend the book to any interested well read dinophile.

    3 out of 5 stars So-So at Best.......2007-08-09

My son is a very advanced reader for his age (a 7 yo consistently reading at a 4-5 grade level) and I was looking for a series of books to challenge him and get him interested in reading chapter books. My son prefers non-fiction over fiction, so I thought this would be a good series since it weaves factual learning into the fictional storyline. However, I must say that I am extremely disappointed. This book did not hold my son's attention at all, and it was extremely boring to read out loud together. Most disappointing to me was the horrible writing style. The book is full of short, even fragmented sentences. I feel this sets a terrible example for children just learning to read and write. An example from page 19:

"Jack stepped forward. He put out his arm. Very cautiously. He brushed his hand down the creature's neck."

    Another example from page 22:

"The creature fixed his eyes on Annie. His long jaws were opening and closing. Like a giant pair of scissors."

I mean, come on. Why couldn't the author just combine the last 2 sentences into one grammatically correct sentence?

I do agree with other reviews that this series may attract those children who are reluctant to read. If you are looking for books with substance that will be cherished for years to come, this may not be the best choice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Chapter Read Aloud..........2007-07-02

My children 5 and 3 love this series. They are so excited to hear what happens next in Jack and Annie's adventure. The book is simple enough for young listeners to follow along. However, be prepared to add your OWN drama with voice intonations and expression. We truly enjoyed Dinosaurs Before Dark so much that we have bought the next 2 books in the series. Also, check out the research companions for each book. This has brought non-fiction excitement into our read alouds as well.

5 out of 5 stars best short, complete book on ancient Greece.......2006-09-07

If you don't know much about ancient Greek history or culture, this is the best short book I know of. On every page, in every sentence, the author gets straight to the point, with no fancy obfuscations, assuming no prior knowledge. I've never seen a better organized history of ancient Greece. Besides that, I strongly approve of the map selection and the timelines. He gives just enough depth to be a solid introduction--just a little bit more than "what you're supposed to know."

Some teachers I know prefer a book titled "Ancient Greece" written by a team of authors led by Sarah Pomeroy. It has just a bit more depth than this book, but it isn't nearly as well written. It seems that they wanted it to be easily comprehensible, but I'm not sure they succeeded. It does have the advantage of a little more depth, but if you're reading for pleasure, I recommend this one rather than that one.

It is, though, only an introduction; that's the obvious downside of being short. You might want more information about the culture: more excerpts from the poets, the thoughts of the philosophers described in more detail, more plates (or plates in color) about the art. Actually the book is amply illustrated in black and white. But of course a book dedicated to Greek culture would have better information on any of these aspects, and that would be a book worth reading. This one serves only as an introduction. I strongly recommend reading the Norton Critical Editions of the Iliad and Odyssey, Hesiod, a couple famous tragedies (in my opinion, Euripides' Medea is the one to read first), and a few of Plato's more famous dialogues. THAT is an introduction; but if that's the kind of thing you intend to do, this book will be a great place to start.

On the historical/political/social matters, this book is again a great introduction, but only an introduction. If you want more detailed information, especially a look at the reasons historians believe such and such happened, I very strongly recommend John V. A. Fine's "The Ancient Greeks," one of the very best history books I've ever read. Of course it's a lot longer, but it's worth it. Once again, if you're reading for pleasure, I recommend this one first, and then Fine's book, which is a bit harder to follow.

If you want to read about Greek religion, I would once again start here; but then you should read the classic, Walter Burkert's book, and follow it up with Jan Bremmer's book, both titled "Greek Religion."

Of course, why not a little cheerleading for learning about ancient Greece? Since the Renaissance and even more since the Victorian era, anyone in the West who would call themselves educated has had to have basic knowledge of ancient Greece. They were certainly very influential on Western culture, and via Bactria even had some considerable influence on East Asia.

I've found that Greek history somehow arouses more curiousity in students than modern European or American history. I think it's because of the nature of the ancient Greeks themselves, because they reflected on human nature via their own history, so as we study ancient Greece, we get to reflect on the nature of power, why governments take forms such as aristocracies or democracies or monarchies, why wars are won or lost, why empires rise and fall, how much blood and misery flow through history, and so on. Students don't merely have to memorize lists of events and prepared ideas, but they get to reflect about life, why the world is the way it is, for themselves. And that is what most people, young or old, are all about.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets for general history.......2006-06-02

This is the book that aroused my interest in ancient Greek history. I've read a lot of general histories, and most are tough to endure. Not this one. Filled with helpful chronolgical charts, maps, organized headings, and clear and succinct prose -- this book conveys the ancient Greek experience in a little over 200 pages.

Trust me, if you want to begin your study of the ancient Greeks (or reinforce and give context to what you already know about the Greeks) read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Ancient Greece........2006-05-31

This book is an excellent guide to early greek history. After this one should go on to more detailed books written by the like of Graham Shipley, Robin Osborne and Simon Hornblower. Blackwells also has han excellent line up of books on the rchaic, Hellenistic periods. Well done to the author.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of great civilization.......2004-12-27

Professor Martin has done a great job here, compressing into 221 pages the history of Greece from prehistoric to Hellenistic times. The book is very well written, and the fact that it includes maps, timelines and pictures helps a lot. The prose is clear and concise, with brief biographies of the most remarkable people. Martin has an ability to vividly depict the daily life and social structure of the Greeks, especially Athenians, that makes it very engaging and approachable. Of course, the main attraction of the book is that the Greek civilization was so fascinating, and that there is much in our own time that comes straight from them, so it's easy to feel empathy with the Greeks. We owe them so much. An excellent book to put some order in your chronology of events when you read texts from these times, and excellent as well as introduction or reminder.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview, but reads like a textbook.......2003-05-06

Martin's history of Ancient Greece is comprehensive and thorough, providing a useful overview of the development of civilization in Greece and covering the major events of the subsequent history while also paying attention to lifestyle and cultural topics. I have two quibbles with the book. I think the early section covering pre-Bronze Age civilization could have been shorter, as much of the analysis is of necessity overly speculative. I was also slightly disappointed with the tone of the work, which often read like a textbook: I felt as though I was reading lists of fun facts without theme or context, and I found myself mentally preparing lesson plans and hypothetical quizzes. I hoped for a slightly deeper examination of Greek civilization.

      Book Description

Late one night, Wilbur hears a tapping at his window. There, standing in the yard outside his window, is a baby apatosaur. Knowing that the dinosaur can't stay, Wilbur begins the long journey back through time to take him home.

Bravely facing a fierce saber-toothed cat and narrowly escaping a monstrous Tyrannosaurus rex, the two new friends trudge through the Ice Age and past the Cretaceous period, finally arriving at the Jurassic period. Once his long-necked friend is safely home, Wilbur makes the journey forward to his own time atop the largest, most spectacular dinosaur he's ever seen.

An adventurous tale indeed! Most Boys and girls will love the story of a young boy who wakes up to a real baby dinosaur at his bedroom window. The subsequent journey back through time to return the little guy to his parents is not lacking in excitement at all. They meet various creatures from the ice age, the age of mammals, and the cretacious period. And the boy and his dino develop a strong friendship. The illustrations are so realistic and warm. We love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Heart-filled, visually beautiful, and dinosaurs. Buy it!.......1995-11-19

My kids are in love with dinosaurs. But this book is much more than a dino book. Wilbur, about 7, awakes to hear a noise outside his window. It's a baby Apatosaurus. He names the baby Gideon, after Gideon Mantell, who discovered the first dinosaur fossil. Realizing that he cannot keep the baby dino, they take off together, back to the Jurrasic period; back to Gideon's home. This book is very beautifully illustrated. And the story is both educational and heart-touching. You won't finish with a dry eye. One of my kid's all time favorites. 28 or so pages.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Book Review.......2007-04-15

I read the book Sunset of the Sabertooth.

      This book is fantastic.

Jack and Annie traveled to the Ice Age in their magical tree house. They were searching for something that started with the letter "M". During their search they met a sorcerer that helped them find a flute that was made from a mammoth bone.
I learned some interesting facts. I learned that cavemen made flutes out of mammoth bones. I discovered that the cavemen were also called Cro-Magnons. I also learned that bears back then were much larger than they are now.
I would recommend this book for three reasons. This book has very interesting facts. The book was exciting to read. I also liked this book because it has unique animals.
Sunset of the Saber tooth is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

The book was really nice because you got to learn about things and animals and people. This book is good for grade 1-3. This book was one of the best books I ever read. I learned that people in the ice age used a mammoth bone flute to scare away sabertooths. This is why you should read this book.

2 out of 5 stars same story different monsters.......2007-10-06

I looked forward to this title for months. Only when I sat down to read it did I realize just how poor my memory of childhood titles is.
Basically this is the same set of three or four, at most, stories retold again and again.
Soldiers end up on a mysterious island, are attacked by various monsters, throw grenades and fire weapons to kill monsters, escape. Repeat.
The silliest thing is not the repetition. No, it's the trio of acrobat brothers who make apperances again and again.
I have not finished the book and probably never will. What's the point after reading the same storyline ten times in a row?
I have enjoyed the other Showcase Presents titles but this is definetly not one I will buy a sequel, if there is one, to.
There are so many other great DC series that could and should have been produced instead.

4 out of 5 stars Fond memories without the weight of 20/20 hindsight.......2007-09-20

Definitely a crazy idea from a strange time.

400 or 500 pages of this stuff may be overkill for modern readers. How did we stand the sheer silliness in such massive doses?

We didn't. At the time we did not have a comic shop to go to every week and the titles themselves were often deivered irregularly to the grocery store. Continuity and characterization was not something we looked for, just sheer entertainment value for 12 cents. The single issue was what we had and the whole world had to be inside, no on going mini-series, Maxi-event cross over stuff.

Rolled up in a back pocket, the comic would accompany me on my bike (with tassles on the handlebars!) to my friend Ricky Fitzgeralds or Tim Howell and we would swap whatever it was that they had acquired with their allowance and enjoy ourselves with no need for dark angst or tragedy driven growth.

Dinosaurs and automatic weapons? Oh yeah! Abandon all belief and logic and read 'em all, one at a time on a rainy day in your bedroom or under a tree in the park.

5 out of 5 stars This book is review-proof.......2007-08-06

It's 500+ pages of G.I.'s fighting dinosaurs! What more do you need to know? Yes, it feels a little like reading the same story over and over and over again. So? G.I's fighting dinosaurs! As brilliant in concept as it is in execution.

5 out of 5 stars My 10 year old ate it up.......2007-08-05

Holy Cow!! Dinosaurs AND WW II action!! What boy could resist? DC wasn't letting any grass grow under their feet in this '60s series (although someone on the team obviously was over fond of submarines). Just don't try to read the stories yourself as you'll only go mad.

3 out of 5 stars it's silly, but it's also part of one of the best comic series ever.......2007-06-10

The 3 stars is for what I remember of The War That Time Forgot. Even as a kid, I could only say it was alright.

OK, WWII and dinosaurs. OK, limited (very limited) characterization. OK, dumb stories. OK, not exactly knock-your-socks-off art (like I could do any better).

Still, from little acorns grow mighty oaks.

The War That Time Forgot is an integral part of Darwyn Cooke's NEW FRONTIER, an absolutely smashing maxi-series re-imagining DC Comics' Silver Age. Cooke takes all the old comic tropes and makes them new again, and relevant both to the times that they occurred in, and to today.

I can't tell you how TWTTF figures into NEW FRONTIER. That would definitely be a spoiler, and I have too much respect for Cooke's work to do that. Cooke himself has much respect for his source materials and their authors, and honors them with his imagination and very apparent love of and for the medium.

And hey, what's wrong with WWII and dinosaurs? Unbelievable, you say?

You believe a man can fly, don't you?
