Book Description
This comprehensive handbook provides up-to-date knowledge and practical advice from established authorities in aerosol science. It covers the principles and practices of bioaerosol sampling, descriptions and comparisons of bioaerosol samplers, calibration methods, and assay techniques, with an emphasis on practicalities, such as which sampler to use and where it should be placed. The text also offers critiques concerning handling the samples to provide representative and meaningful assays for their viability, infectivity, and allergenicity. A wide range of microbes-viz., viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens, and their fragments-are considered from such perspectives. Bioaerosols Handbook is divided into four parts, providing a wide-ranging reference work, as well as a practical guide on how best to sample and assay bioaerosols using current technology.
Customer Reviews:
The bioaerosols "bible".......2005-07-13
Considered by some to be THE overview reference book for bioaerosols, it covers their physical aspects, sampling, sample stability, instrument calibration, and multiple measurement approaches. It also describes problems specific to residential and industrial environments, including laboratories, hospitals, animal houses, and the particulars of pollen, fungi, molds, and bacteria.
I'm writing this review in 2005, and some of the material is a bit dated. The review of laser and optical measurement techniques gives some good background, but is no longer state of the art. Nevertheless, it is a very valuable reference for anyone studying bioaerosols for environmental or homeland security considerations.
The Bioaerosols Handbook.......2001-07-23
The handbook deals with the subject of bioaerosols on a broad but in depth basis. It deals with the practicalities of sampling, calibration and sample assay methods without being too theoretical. It's style is both technical but easy to read and understand, being written by experts from around the world. Each chapter has its own approach giving a refreshingly different perspective of each aspect of bioaerosol analysis. It's really a bioaerosol bible for anyone interested in biological aerosols and $... isn't bad for 600+ pages with a limited circulation. By the way it's brief specifically excluded viruses, so they don't get a lot of text devoted to them compared to bacteria, fungi etc.
It hasn't really dated that much either since 1995 (I am writing in 2006). Indeed even classic texts like 'The microbiology of the atmosphere' PH Gregory: Leonard Hill (1973) still pack in a lot of relevent data - I still love reading this book as well. By the way I wrote the chapter on Modern Microscopic Methods in the handbook - but I get no payment for sales or endorsement and I think the other twenty chapters are great. The pioneering UK image analysis manufacturers mentioned in this chapter are now long gone, so these days try the likes of MetaMorph, Leica QWin, Image pro Plus, Andora Technology and Openlabs image analysis software (they all work on the same basic principles anyway). Plus confocal microscopes, and other new types like TIRF, are now far more widespread in use.
Why not also try a library loan of :
1. Atmospheric Microbial Aerosols, B.Lighthart, A.J.Mohr, Chapman & Hall, 1994
2. The Aerobiological Pathway of Microorganisms, C.S.Cox, Wiley Press, 1987
3. Architectural Design and Indoor Microbial Pollution, R.B.Kundsin, Oxford University Press, 1988

No Supplemental Information Here.......2007-03-20
I bought this book in hopes that it would aid in my laboratory work, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. I thought it would describe what the media was used for more throughly but it only had a sentence at most saying what I already new. Some media that I commonly use I could not find in this book.
It's great as a recipe book, but like I said, I was hoping it would provide more background and explanations.

Book Description
This manual summarizes the accumulation of information and knowledge of environmental microbiology in a single source. It details the natural fate of microorganisms in the environment as well as the intentional attempts to eliminate from the environment microorganisms that are pathogenic to humans or to plants and animals. The basic principles of environmental microbiology and general analytical methodologies, common across the range of the environments covered, are presented first. The core sections are structured with regard to the type of environmental medium being discussed. This landmark effort defines the study of environmental microbiology as we know it today and serves as an essential contribution to the literature. Customer Reviews:
Wow!!!.......2002-06-25
One word describes this book - wow! This book is a great source of information for everybody that is seriously interested in environmental microbiology. The wealth of information given in this book is divided into 98 "short stories", most of them on average 10 pages long, each written by a different scientist. Even though the book is presented in a very scientific manner, it reads surprisingly easy, although the reader should have some knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry. This is not a textbook! Those of you who are looking for a pretty picture book should look elsewhere. There are no fancy appendices or glossaries, no CD-ROM, just an index. Pictures and graphs are held to a minimum and are used for the more complex concepts only. At the end of each chapter, a bibliography invites to further exploration of the particular topic. Here are the main sections of the book: 1. Introduction to environmental microbiology, 2. General methodology, 3. Water microbiology in public health, 4. Aquatic environments, 5. Soil, Rhizosphere, and Phyllosphere, 6. Subsurface and landfills, 7. Aerobiology, 8. Biotransformation and biodegradation. In conclusion, this book has quality and substance, just as you would expect from a book published by the ASM.

Customer Reviews:
Tour de force!.......2003-05-23
What a ride! Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology by Paul F. Kemp, et al is the only book on Acuatic Microbial Ecology you will ever need. Folks: case closed. From the introduction on topiary dislocution to the guts of the nanophylum discussion-- Paul F. Kemp grabs your attention and holds it like a boa constrictor, or like a sentient glue creature, or like a bear trap.
*A bear trap.*
The book puts to rest the myth that an expert textbook cannot be as compelling as a clandestine extra-marital affair, or a Hollywood action movie.
Folks: a Hollywood. Action. Movie.
Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology: Superb!

Book Description
Thirty years have passed since the last edition of this volume was published. Since then, many advances have occurred in the field of environmental physiology. Established areas of research have been expanded by the application of new concepts and the use of more modern tools, while other areas, then in their infancy, have developed into important subjects of current research. The latter include, for example, research in the physiological adaptations and acclimations to underwater and space environments, to microorganisms responsible for acute inflammatory diseases, and to psychosocial stress. All of the chapters in this book were written by international investigators noted for their individual contributions to the areas that they cover. The focus of their presentations addresses the regulatory mechanisms of the physiological responses to the many factors constituting the external environment. Each contribution has been subjected to a rigorous review process in order to ensure its relevance and timeliness. At the same time, innovative and even controversial interpretations were not rejected, so that the material in this volume represents the most up-to-date understanding of, and debate over, the physiological adaptation to the environment.
