Book Description
Essential Cell Biology, Second Edition contains basic, core knowledge about how cells work. It has a proven track record in providing students with a conceptual and accessible grounding in cell biology. The text and figures have been prepared to be easy-to-follow, accurate, clear and engaging for the introductory student. Each section follows logically from the previous one, telling a story, rather than being a collection of facts. Questions integrated throughout each chapter encourage the reader to pause, think about what they have read, and attempt to apply the new knowledge in ways that test their understanding. Based on user feedback, the Second Edition now offers increased coverage of genetics and more experimental background. It is completely up-to-date.
Customer Reviews:
Mwentzler.......2007-09-27
Is an read easy and understandable read. Explains all topics very thoroughly yet in a clear concise manner especially for a biology text book.
Very good book.......2007-09-24
It's kind of hard to judge a textbook, especially when you're a student. But i can honestly say that this book is very straight forward. The diagrams are great, and especially if you read the diagrams as you're reading the book, they add a lot of depth and diversity to the reading. The text itself is not mundane...you won't fall asleep reading it. The CD it comes with is nice....but i tend not to use it that much...all it is, is just video clips. Overall i'd say this is one of the best, if not THE best, biology book i've used.
HOWEVER! Remember that this IS a bio book and it DOES get a little tedious at points
Cell Biology made clear.......2007-03-08
Great book. Although not a basic book, this text make many aspects of cell biology very clear. I would highly recommend it.
Essential Cell Biology 2nd Ed........2006-11-06
This is probably one of the best cell biology books out there. It's easy to understand, covers all the basics, and the CD included with it has really helpful videos.
Fine book, for whatever it matters.......2006-02-28
The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about essential cell biology, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

Customer Reviews:
Essentials of Diagnostic Microbiology.......2004-07-13
I am a medical labortory technition student. We use this as one of our primary microbiolgy textbook. After spending a couple of weeks with it, out teacher dug last years book out of the boxes. This book is full of errors, typos, and generaly hard to keep stuff straight. It sometimes seems that it was never proofread. Its full of good info, but I wonder how much is correct. I have bought 2 other books on my own for the class that I (and the teacher) rely on to verify the info in this book. If you can find this book cheap, buy it. Don't waste any money on full price.
Book Description
The new edition of a highly successful book, this text covers both general and oral microbiology, concentrating on areas of direct relevance to clinical dentistry. It offers information on systemic infections that patients may have, plus more specific information on oral infections that may cause caries or periodontal disease. In-depth coverage includes immunology, infection control, and a glossary of immunological and bacteriological terms.

Out of date.......2006-04-16
It has some good general information, but is out of date in several major ways. Does not include any information regarding Domains, poor job describing charactoristics defing bacteria.
Very good reference for microbiology.......2003-08-29
I studied this book for my undergraduate microbiology class. It helped because it got to the point was nice and concise. It focused on some important topics. It is easy to understand and keeps your attention. I also used the following which is on amazon:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
The latter book was very good and a must buy because it helped me to get very good grades on my microbiology tests. Plus, it helped to eliminate some of the surprise questions that my teacher through on the test. I would defintely recommend both books for any undergraduate student taking a microbiology class. Both books are 5 stars.

Manual of Clinical Microbiology (2 Volume Set)
ASIN: 1555811256 |
Book Description
In response to the numerous requests for a guide to the examinations that constitute the core of clinical microbiology, the editors of the Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook have developed Essential Procedures for Clinical Microbiology (ECPM). ECPM provides a concise approach to the performance of laboratory analyses aimed at identifying whenever possible the etiological agents of infectious diseases with presently available modalities. The methods included in this guide are not exhaustive; rather they represent the choices of experts in the various divisions that make up the discipline of clinical microbiology. The format of this volume will enable the reader to follow a specimen through all of the steps from its proper collection to a final report issued to the clinician. EPCM includes numerous tables, flow sheets, and illustrations. This is an essential reference intended as a laboratory workbook for clinical microbiologists performing microbiological and immunological procedures. Book Description
This book presents the science of microbiology in a clinical context that is relevant to the safe and effective practice of dental surgery. Microbiology is a rapidly moving discipline. Since the First Edition, a number of infectious diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and SARS have emerged as significant clinical problems. There have also been changes in the epidemiology of certain infections, for example sexually transmitted diseases. These issues are all covered in this new edition. The book has been updated throughout, and changes to antimicrobial drug prescribing regimens have been included. Major new chapters include those on fungi, human herpes viruses, infections of the central nervous system, and use of antimicrobial agents in dentistry. The chapters dealing with sterilisation, disinfection and infection control procedures in dentistry have been completely re-written, to reflect recent significant changes in decontamination protocols which have been stimulated by the problem of prion diseases. This book will serve as a core reference text for use throughout all years of the undergraduate dental curriculum, as a refresher course for postgraduate students, and as a continuing source of reference for dentists in clinical practice.
Customer Reviews:
The best Textbook of Microbiology.......2007-01-25
This is beyond doubt the best text book of microbiology for dental students. It is informative, illustrative, and enriched with very clear illustrations, photos, and tables. Moreover it is very helpful for dentists who are applying for postgraduate studies and degrees. Its language is easily understoodand it is well organized.

Book Description
Most genetics textbooks deal adequately with plant and animal genetics, but tend to neglect fungi except for two areas. Firstly, the ascus segregations which, in the 1960s, contributed so much to developing an understanding of the mechanism of recombination and secondly, the contribution that work on yeast (as a model eukaryote) is currently making to understanding cell cycle control and its genetic regulation. Consequently, most introductory genetics texts will leave the reader/student with the impression that fungi are of use when peculiarities of their structure or life style suit them to particular experimental approaches, but are not worth mentioning otherwise. The authors have produced a book that will compensate for this imbalance. This book discusses the genetics of fungi in a way that is attractive and challenging, succinct yet comprehensive, sensitive to commercial and applied aspects, yet also theoretical, dealing with their genetics from molecules to individuals to population. This short text will be an ideal supplement to the established basic textbooks in genetics or can be used as the sole text for an advanced course devoted to fungal genetics.
