Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Probability and Statistics are studied by most science students, usually as a second- or third-year course. Many current texts in the area are just cookbooks and, as a result, students do not know why they perform the methods they are taught, or why the methods work. The strength of this book is that it readdresses these shortcomings; by using examples, often from real-life and using real data, the authors can show how the fundamentals of probabilistic and statistical theories arise intuitively. It provides a tried and tested, self-contained course, that can also be used for self-study.

A Modern Introduction to Probability and Statistics has numerous quick exercises to give direct feedback to the students. In addition the book contains over 350 exercises, half of which have answers, of which half have full solutions. A website at www.springeronline.com/1-85233-896-2 gives access to the data files used in the text, and, for instructors, the remaining solutions. The only pre-requisite for the book is a first course in calculus; the text covers standard statistics and probability material, and develops beyond traditional parametric models to the Poisson process, and on to useful modern methods such as the bootstrap.

This will be a key text for undergraduates in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Business Studies who are studying a mathematical statistics course, and also for more intensive engineering statistics courses for undergraduates in all engineering subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning if you're prepared.......2007-06-08

This book reads easily because it gives many concrete examples and uses a tutorial approach to teaching. However, you still need to know some math! You don't need a math degree. A good first course in calculus covering derivatives and integrals, including logs and exponentials, and some introductory combinatorics (basic knowledge of sets, permutations and combinations) is enough. Any sophomore or, at the latest, junior majoring in engineering or hard science has the prerequisites.

An understanding of probability is necessary for understanding statistics, so the first half of this book is probability. Without probability, statistics becomes something like "here are some facts, trust me, now here are some formulas, recipes and tables and you will learn when to use each one". For many people this may be enough, especially if they just need to get something done. But if you want to know why hypothesis testing is done the way it is and how it works, buy this book. For example, many statistics books just assume a normal distribution for sampling and the only thing you need to learn is when to use a one-tailed or two-tailed test and which formula to use. This is valid when working with sufficiently large populations or samples. In contrast, the worked example in this book does not use a normal distribution and it walks you through the reasoning and calculation. The reasoning is applicable to any population and distribution. When you change to a normal distribution the principles remain the same, only the formulas change. You learn the principles.

Now to the book's style. This is a tutorial style book that teaches using examples. It doesn't skip many steps and can feel somewhat chatty. It repeats simple calculations along the way so you don't have to page back and find where that number was calculated. This keeps the flow going. Learning by example is actually a good way to learn if you are new to the material. Some however, may not like this style, so read some online first before buying. If you already have probability under your belt and are up on your math then you may find this book slow going. This book is aimed at scientists and engineers, so if you are looking for a rigorous math book with proofs, look elsewhere.

Summary: If you've got the prerequisites then this is a great book for self teaching at a good price. If you are lacking in math and you need to do statistics now, then pick up a "cookbook" statistics book and come back later when you have the math background. If you know your stuff and need a reference, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Starts understandable but becomes hard to read.......2006-09-24

I really don't feel qualified to rate this book because it quickly went over my head. The first chapters were an easy read and left me wanting to read more of the subject. After that, however the equations quickly progressed to where you may have to have a degree in mathematics to understand it. Not all the variables in the equations were defined, even in the index. This may be a very good text book if taught by someone knowledgeable in the subject, however I could not understand it by reading the book.

        Book Description

Through years of teaching experience, John S. Lawson and John Erjavec have learned that it doesn't take much theoretical background before engineers can learn practical methods of data collections, analysis, and interpretation that will be useful in real life and on the job. With this premise in mind, the authors wrote ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL STATISTICS, which includes the basic topics of engineering statistics but puts less emphasis on the theoretical concepts and elementary topics usually found in an introductory statistics book. Instead, the authors put more emphasis on techniques that will be useful for engineers. With fewer details of traditional probability and inference and more emphasis on the topics useful to engineers, the book is flexible for instructors and interesting for students.

The material is alright but it is just kind of old. I can not tell from the original description otherwise, I will
          not have bought it.

          5 out of 5 stars Optimization Mini-Library.......2007-02-20

This is the best book I have in my optimization library. It is excellent for students and teachers as well. It introduces you to optimization using a simple language, practical examples explained in a very didactical manner. It surveys optimization techniques and categorizes it in a very well-arranged and simplified format. You wouldn't have to read tens of pages with unsightly symbols, messed with subscripts and superscripts to understand a single optimization technique.
It also brings an uplifting introduction to the concept of problem solving. I highly recommend this book to Optimization and Mathematics students and teachers.
Read the book, once you are done, look at the table of contents and give a five minutes lecture on each single title and subtitle, which is what you will be capable of doing at the end.

4 out of 5 stars It's not the technique, it's the logic behind it.......2006-07-24

Most evolutionary computation or math books deal with the techniques of solving problems. This book teachs you how to think of a solution for the problem you face, and not what problems are appropriate for the technique in hand.

The logic is that when you do a craft work, you do pick the appropriate tool from your tools box, but you don't grasp a tool and then find a job to go with it, which is the case when you can only handle this tool.

5 out of 5 stars improve your problem solving ability.......2006-02-20

The authors have updated their successful first edition, though the latter, printed in 99, was scarcely obsolete. A heuristic can be basically a rule of thumb, dressed up in fancier language. What the authors intend is for you to develop an intuition about when to use modern algorithms. Where is almost every case, these are actually implemented on a computer; a reflection of the cheap availability of computing power to most readers.

The book is a good complement to various standard algorithm texts, like those by Sedgewick, Aho and Knuth. You can consider this book as standing a level above those. [Though Knuth's books also do an excellent job of suggesting when to use or modify algorithms. ]

The level of discussion here is not of a strict, heavy mathematical approach. It can be read as informal guidelines, that discuss the gist of such ideas as simulated annealing and evolutionary methods. There is a wide range of example problems, to motivate you in understanding what might be used to solve them.

          Book Description

Pattern Theory: From Representation to Inference provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the modern challenges in signal, data and pattern analysis in speech recognition, computational linguistics, image analysis and computer vision. Aimed at graduate students in biomedical engineering, mathematics, computer science and electrical engineering with a good background in mathematics and probability, the text includes numerous exercises and an extensive bibliography. Additional resources including extended proofs, selected solutions and examples are available on a companion website. The book commences with a short overview of pattern theory and the basics of statistics and estimation theory. Chapters 3-6 discuss the role of representation of patterns via conditioning structure and Chapters 7 and 8 examine the second central component of pattern theory: groups of geometric transformation applied to the representation of geometric objects. Chapter 9 moves into probabilistic structures in the continuum, studying random processes and random fields indexed over subsets of Rn, and Chapters 10, 11 continue with transformations and patterns indexed over the continuum. Chapters 12-14 extend from the pure representations of shapes to the Bayes estimation of shapes and their parametric representation. Chapters 15 and 16 study the estimation of infinite dimensional shape in the newly emergent field of Computational Anatomy, and finally Chapters 17 and 18 look at inference, exploring random sampling approaches for estimation of model order and parametric representing of shapes.

5 out of 5 stars The APPLIED book of Pattern Theory.......2007-01-31

Professor Grenander has developed his beautiful, but ofen difficult to understand in mathematical terms, a grand theory for representing various patterns (everthing?) in the real-world for the last 40 years. Now we finally have a book that ordinary folks may hope to understand and appreciate this important, and potentially very useful work, thanks to his productive collaborator, Michael Miller, an EE-turned statistician and biomedical researcher. What is nice about the book is the fact that there are much more background materials which nearly cover everything you need to know to fill in the gaps, and much recent developments since Grenander's 1993 tombstone: General Pattern Theory are covered here. The number of figures in the book illustrate that this is a very APPLIED book, though certainly not the usual standard of applied statistics. For the initiated researchers working on related problems, this is a much awaited text which should allow users to apply the theory to potentially many other applications and subject-specific developments. The only complain I have, if any, will be the lack of motivations in the uses of sometimes very diffuclt and very deep theory such as transformation theory. I think the authors could have given more account of the biological origins of these ideas in Darcy Thompson, and some background in the "easier" theory of statistical shape theory. However I do like their overviews at the beginnings of each chapter and longer review in the first chapter. I also like to see more pointers in the computational details or software implementation. I assume these are also active research areas. Although a grand achivement, I don't think that there exists a theory that can "solve" everything. I think the book focuses mainly on statistical techniques for analyzing shapes and image registration, but it does not address more complicated spatial-temporal processes such as biological pattern formation or emergence in complex dynamical systems. Nevertheless, I think this is really a book which is worthy reading over and over, and which will make a difference in your research. Enjoy reading, grab a copy while you can, or better, try out the theory yourself.

          Book Description

Digital signal processing has become an integral part of observational seismology. Seismic waveforms and the parameters commonly extracted from them are strongly influenced by the effects of numerous filters, both within the earth and within the recording system. With the advent of numerous software tools for the processing of digital seismograms, seismologists have unprecedented power in extracting information from seismic records. These tools are often based on sophisticated theoretical aspects of digital signal processing which, to be used properly, need to be understood. This book is aimed at observational seismologists and students in geophysics trying to obtain a basic understanding of those aspects of digital signal processing that are relevant to the interpretation of seismograms. It covers the basic theory of linear systems, the design and analysis of simple digital filters, the effect of sampling and A/D conversion, the calculation of 'true ground motion', and the effects of seismic recording systems on parameters extracted from digital seismograms. It contains numerous examples and exercises together with their solutions.
          CD-ROM Included
The second edition contains the Digital Seismology Tutor by Elke Schmidtke (University of Potsdam) and Frank Scherbaum, a Java applet with all the tools to reproduce and/or modify the examples and problems from this book. Furthermore, a treatment of sigma-delta modulation with new problems and exercises has been added.

4 out of 5 stars Of Poles and Zeros.......2001-10-25

This is an excellent introduction to modern seismic measurement systems. Basically all what you need to know is covered here. Starting from functioning of seismometer, analog-to-digital techniques and digital filtering. All from the point of view of seismological interests, i.e. everything is all the time nicely linked with seismological practices which other "signal and systems" books obviously lack. Also the CD included is very educative when learning what poles and zeros actually mean.

Pictures could be a bit better from time to time. It seems that straight window-captures have been used when some further image processing would have been required.

Nevertheless, this is a must for any seismologist dealing with measuring systems.
