Book Description
On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong -- with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. Groopman explores why doctors err and shows when and how they can -- with our help -- avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can profoundly impact our health. This book is the first to describe in detail the warning signs of erroneous medical thinking and reveal how new technologies may actually hinder accurate diagnoses. How Doctors Think offers direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track.
Groopman draws on a wealth of research, extensive interviews with some of the country's best doctors, and his own experiences as a doctor and as a patient. He has learned many of the lessons in this book the hard way, from his own mistakes and from errors his doctors made in treating his own debilitating medical problems.
How Doctors Think reveals a profound new view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together.
Customer Reviews:
A great look into the real world of medical care........2007-10-07
As an incoming first year medical student, I wanted to read a doctor's take on the behind-the-scenes work of medicine. What I got was an eye-opening and honest look at doctors, not as white-coated diagnosing machines, but as human beings with faults who are just trying to do their best. It is an excellent book both for those in medicine or who are going into medicine, as well as for laypeople who just want to get a better idea of where their doctor is coming from the next time they have an appointment.
An Important Examination of the Problem Solving Process.......2007-10-02
I stumbled across this book in the library. My son has been sick for years, and I thought this might help. Dr. Groopman does an excellent job of helping the reader understand the process that doctors use to diagnose an illness, and thus how the more difficult cases are misdiagnosed. The case studies that he presents draw the reader in, so there are many short stories within the longer narrative. As an engineer I have seen the same mistakes made in solving complicated problems. I suspect a similar book could be written about solving difficult crimes, or problems in manufacturing. I directly applied the ideas in working with my son's doctors, and it was part of the solution to an accurate diagnosis and better treatment. I have mentioned the book to many friends and have now purchased two copies.
Solutions at last?.......2007-09-30
The experience is common and can be more than frustrating. Something is wrong, the doctors don't listen (you are in and you are out and there was no time to ask questions) and they don't know what's wrong so say there is nothing wrong. This is the pathway to suicide.
Groopman does not give you the solutions but helps you find some. If this is not always a page turner, it is none-the-less easy reading that takes the layman into the doctors mind and shows how the doctor works. Current research is used, with a set of readable notes replacing the usual bibliography.
The layman and the doctor will both find the book full of really helpful hints.
As a person in health administration, I believe professionals would also find this book useful.
How Doctors think........2007-09-30
Extremely intresting, informative and reveling. It makes you think twice before useing medical services. At least it forces you to prepere yourself.Ingi Th. Vigfusson.
An absolute MUST for new docs!!.......2007-09-30
A refreshing respite from highly technical and dry textbooks, this book is easy to read, flows very well and addresses the issue that a new doctor fears the most - how can I honor the "first, do no harm" vow that I took and still manage to effectively diagnose and treat my patients? Many of the pitfalls of erroneous thinking are presented here, not in a way that makes the fear of failure worse, but rather in a manner that reassures the new doctor that all doctors have been through this before and found a way to structure their "doctor thinking" so that fewer mistakes are made and more diagnoses are correct. BRAVO to a doctor with not only the courage to put it out there in plain language but also with the foresight to provide roadsigns to recognizing the error patterns and ways to counter them.

Brand new - just like she said!.......2007-09-05
I ordered 25 books that were supposed to be in good condition. They were even better. They were just like new. They were missing one of the supplementary items as was clearly stated up front. I am completely satisfied.
Great Book!.......2007-08-27
Another new bestseller which I recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune
Real Positives for a Negative World..........2007-08-03
I have probably referenced this book more in my training seminars and speaking engagements than any other book I have ever read. I just love it! (I gave everyone in my family a copy for Christmas) The author states that 99 out of 100 people report that they would like to be surrounded by more positive people. "And the church said; AMEN!" This short, interesting, and succinct read teaches the reader how to become one of those "more positive people." A must read about positive psychology for anyone who has to be around negative people in our negative world. I think that pretty much includes all of us, doesn't it?
SUCCESS: It Just Ain't That Hard Y'all! Three Things to STOP Doing and Three Things to START and KEEP Doing to Reach Your Greatest Potential
How Full is Your Bucket?.......2007-07-29
The book assigns theoretic valuations to philosophic concepts.
For instance, a full bucket has a net positive outlook + Energy
from every drop of strength expended. Relentless negativity leads to
death. The North Koreans broke down peer cohesiveness by insisting
that captors confess their transgressions publicly.
The author believes that regular praise= increased productivity,
tenure, loyalty and satisfaction. People leave when they aren't
appreciated sufficiently. Bad bosses increase stroke risk.
Activiely disengaged employees cost employers upward of $50B a
year or more. A strength of the book is that the authors attempt
to quantify universal concepts within practical contexts of
everyday life. To a considerable extent, the authors succeed.
Excellent.......2007-07-27
This was a great book that I handed out to my staff. Everyone found it valuable for life not just work.

Customer Reviews:
Beware of the digital upgrade.......2007-09-05
I wanted to forwarn other users, especially students, of the pitfalls of the digital upgrade option:
1) Don't buy the upgrade if you're hoping to get access to it through the library computers, instead of having to lug the massive book to school. Apparently, you cannot view any online book from more than 7 different computers within a 30 day period. And, consequently, if the cache happens to get cleared after each session (as is the case with most shared computers), then you're limited to only 7 sessions with ANY computer.
2) Beware that the book is hard to read online. It's great for adding annotations (highlighting text, adding bookmarks, typing notes, etc.), but it's a real strain on the eyes if you try to read a full chapter. The text is low contrast (gray on white) and low resolution. Even when you use the Zoom-in feature (which lets you increase the size a little bit), it's still hard on the eyes. The text is still just blurry enough to make you think you might need glasses. After several chapters, you probably will need glasses :-)
You can check the quality first by viewing the Preview. That's representative of the whole book. Try reading an entire page and decide for yourself. On the plus side, if you do buy the book, and realize that these issues really do pose a problem for you, Amazon lets you request a refund, as long as you have viewed less than 20% of the book. 20% of 1300 pages is a lot, so you should be fine.
From Start to End.......2007-03-28
This is a great educational text. Each chapter starts from cellular level and progresses to the functional and clinical level. Being a chiropractor and working with the spine everyday I need to understand exactly where the problem starts and not focus on the symptoms. This text has allowed me to understand what is neurophysiologically going on with my patients and improve their course of treatment. As described the neurological system is the electricity of the body and if a fuse decides to blow you need to know where to look.
Impressive for a textbook.......2007-02-13
As far as textbooks go, this has to be one of the best that I have come across...and I have come across quite a few. The material is divided into closely related sections, and the text is clear and to the point in its explanation. Not much filler text or needless material. The diagrams are pretty clear and well positioned in the sections also.
Great Reference Book.......2007-01-06
The text is extremely clear and to the point. The diagrams are also simple to understand. Every major topic in neurosci is discussed, allowing you to get an excellent foundation such that you could read any recent publications on that topic and understand completely what the authors are referring to.
A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!.......2006-06-07
I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science. having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning to his epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science. I have found it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose. Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve. Believe me I am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations. I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

Book Description
Designing a good interface isn't easy. Users demand software that is well-behaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology -- web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices -- may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well.
UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence.
Designing Interfaces captures those best practices as design patterns -- solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety of examples illustrated in full color. You'll get recommendations, design alternatives, and warnings on when not to use them.
Each chapter's introduction describes key design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color. These give you a deeper understanding of why the patterns work, and how to apply them with more insight.
A book can't design an interface for you -- no foolproof design process is given here -- but Designing Interfaces does give you concrete ideas that you can mix and recombine as you see fit. Experienced designers can use it as a sourcebook of ideas. Novice designers will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design, with enough guidance to start using these patterns immediately.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not user-friendly.......2007-06-16
This book does to UI design what the well-known "Design Patterns" did for software design. Many readers, specially those experienced in graphical and UI design will find much of the content familiar, when not trivial, but the purpose of a "pattern language" book is not to break new ground but to formalize and explain a well known language.
The book is beautifully laid out and illustrated. The amount of theory preceding each group of patterns seems right on the mark.
¿Why the low star rating?
The book's binding broke before I finished reading it, something that's completely not user-friendly. If you're not in a hurry I'd wait for a second edition that fixes the problem.
A good reference and prefab pattern library........2007-04-30
I found this a bit shallow as a read-through textbook or handbook, but it should make a very useful reference and may serve well as a prefab pattern library. I think it will serve best for those working on web sites and web apps, though it also covers desktop apps.
Designing Interfaces.......2007-04-24
Designing Interfaces is a great book to get you started on the subject, wether you are a designer or a developer, this books will show you how important is to *design* you application.
Concepts are presented as design patterns and they are intended to help you resovle real world problems, some knowledge of UI design is recommended but every patten is described and explained very well, the use of the "Use When", "Why" and "How To" sections will give you al the information you need to know to make a decision on the use of any specific solution.
From web forms to destop application, this books will show you the right way to make the user's interaction experience as simple and intuitive as possible.
Jump-started my problem-solving process.......2007-03-21
Having already read through the first few chapters, today I sat down with an explicit need: to solve a problem that involved searching and filtering a large set of data. This book came through for me. Yes, some of it appears obvious when you first read through, but once you have a specific problem to address, its true utility emerges. I opened to the Showing Complex Data chapter, and as I read through, ideas began to form. Some came directly from the book, others were inspired by or related to what I was reading. I took notes, and those notes helped me develop the questions about the data and the users I need to answer in order to continue.
When you're faced with a design challenge, and you're a bit stymied as to how to proceed, this book will help move the solution forward. Even if you think you have a solution, this book can help you make it fresh and creative.
Usefull, Concise - Great.......2007-02-24
This is a really usefull book. It's also simply interesting to read.

Book Description
Ways with Words is a classic study of children learning to use language at home and at school in two communities only a few miles apart in the south-eastern United States. ‘Roadville’ is a white working-class community of families steeped for generations in the life of textile mills; ‘Trackton’ is a black working-class community whose older generations grew up farming the land but whose current members work in the mills. In tracing the children’s language development the author shows the deep cultural differences between the two communities, whose ways with words differ as strikingly from each other as either does from the pattern of the townspeople, the ‘mainstream’ blacks and whites who hold power in the schools and workplaces of the region. Employing the combined skills of ethnographer, social historian, and teacher, the author raises fundamental questions about the nature of language development, the effects of literacy on oral language habits, and the sources of communication problems in schools and workplaces.
Customer Reviews:
important piece of work.......2007-05-04
As a graduate student in English, I am not one who wanted to take any courses on rhetoric and composition. I signed up for one class this semester that focused on literacy and race. This book was a required reading. I was actually one of the only students who liked this book. Heath immerses herself in the communities of Trackton and Roadville. As an instructor of some of the local teachers, she decided to look into the literacy learning of these two communities. Trackton, an all black community, consists of people reading to learn. In Roadville, the all-white community is struggling with desegregation and parents wanting their children to learn the "right" things. The study of the Piedmont Carolinas--the area where the two communities are located--is important because it specifies that culture has everything to do with the way language and literacy is learned. I give it four stars because in the course of a ten year study, it did not seem as if she gathered a lot of research. She seemed to focus only on their lifestyles.
Shirley Brice Heath Has a "Way With Words".......2000-08-23
Language is power. Heath, a reflective practitioner of both human nature and schooling, provides an in-depth view of communities which epitomize the struggle for such power. In her ethnographic study of Trackton and Roadville, Heath lays bare the socializing process of children through words. The discontinuity between home and school is disturbing; a realization that students who do not fit the traditional way of schooling are left behind. Clearly illustrated is the need for teachers and students to bridge the gap which exists in relation to both language and culture, for without this effort some students will never acquire the power needed to take control of their education or pursue opportunities from which they have previously been excluded. This is must reading for student ethnographers, doctoral students, and those dedicated to school reform, particularly those in the areas of diversity in public schools, and language. This extraordinary book compares favorably to "Growing Up Literate: Learning From Inner-City Families" by Denny Taylor & Catherine Dorsey-Gaines.
A Teacher's View.......2000-04-03
Teaching in a high school with a large number of minority children can be challenging. After reading this book, recommended by the debate teacher, I feel that I am better prepared. This book is an excellent resource for those wanting to understand the student from a background different form their own. If you plan to work in public school, this book is a must-read. I borrowed a friend's book, and then decided I had to have a copy of my own.

Designing Interfaces: Patterns for Effective Interaction Design
ASIN: 0262134748 |
Book Description
Digital technology has changed the way we interact with everything from the games we play to the tools we use at work. Designers of digital technology products no longer regard their job as designing a physical object--beautiful or utilitarian--but as designing our interactions with it. In Designing Interactions, award-winning designer Bill Moggridge introduces us to forty influential designers who have shaped our interaction with technology. Moggridge, designer of the first laptop computer (the GRiD Compass, 1981) and a founder of the design firm IDEO, tells us these stories from an industry insider's viewpoint, tracing the evolution of ideas from inspiration to outcome. The innovators he interviews--including Will Wright, creator of The Sims, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, and Doug Engelbart, Bill Atkinson, and others involved in the invention and development of the mouse and the desktop--have been instrumental in making a difference in the design of interactions. Their stories chart the history of entrepreneurial design development for technology.
Moggridge and his interviewees discuss such questions as why a personal computer has a window in a desktop, what made Palm's handheld organizers so successful, what turns a game into a hobby, why Google is the search engine of choice, and why 30 million people in Japan choose the i-mode service for their cell phones. And Moggridge tells the story of his own design process and explains the focus on people and prototypes that has been successful at IDEO--how the needs and desires of people can inspire innovative designs and how prototyping methods are evolving for the design of digital technology.
Designing Interactions is illustrated with more than 700 images, with color throughout. Accompanying the book is a DVD that contains segments from all the interviews intercut with examples of the interactions under discussion.
Interviews with:
Bill Atkinson, Durrell Bishop, Brendan Boyle, Dennis Boyle, Paul Bradley, Duane Bray, Sergey Brin, Stu Card, Gillian Crampton Smith, Chris Downs, Tony Dunne, John Ellenby, Doug Englebart, Jane Fulton Suri, Bill Gaver, Bing Gordon, Rob Haitani, Jeff Hawkins, Matt Hunter, Hiroshi Ishii, Bert Keely, David Kelley, Rikako Kojima, Brenda Laurel, David Liddle, Lavrans Løvlie, John Maeda, Paul Mercer, Tim Mott, Joy Mountford, Takeshi Natsuno, Larry Page, Mark Podlaseck, Fiona Raby, Cordell Ratzlaff, Ben Reason, Jun Rekimoto, Steve Rogers, Fran Samalionis, Larry Tesler, Bill Verplank, Terry Winograd, and Will Wright

Interactions = more than websites.......2007-08-16
Somehow I didn't pick up on this until I actualy paged through the book physically -- this isn't just about website or multimedia. It's about anything that has a human interface, including laptop computers. (Unfortunately, Amazon pairs it with many Internet/website design books, adding to my confusion.)
Because it seems to cover the whole range of interface use and recent history, I didn't really go farther into the book to review it.
Interesting, helpful.......2007-04-07
I just got the book for a week, read half of it. it's quite interesting to know something happens in the last 30 years, the author come up with interviewing the guy who made these things happen, let the guys explain their thoughts on the cases, this make the book interesting and helpful.
It's a pity that the book go too fast for each case, when you want to know more details, it stops. Anyway, this book seems dosent want to serve as something try to reach this goal. so this is not the weakness of the book.
Most important thing, when reading it , you'll get the interesting pieces. And it guide you to walk along the colorful road in the IxD forest. This is really cool book.
Something make it not so nice. To thick to put into the bag.

It's easy to get carried away with the claims that Moggride's book is an instant classic. But I'd have to agree, this book would be worth paying more than $100 for. The book carries its wisdom well, and now sits on my work bookshelf for constant reference. I will use this while planning for and conducting user experience based products. This book does concentrate more in the field of software development, however the lessons translate well into general product design. As such I'd recommend this book to any designer who is interested in improving their user centred products.
A must have for any user experience practioner or student.......2007-02-23
It's a great volume at a great price. The content is very approachable and readable, almost like a coffee table book to introduce the power and effect of great user experience and interaction design to non industry folk. Its a classic in the same league as books by Norman and by Papanek. The DVD shows that this book was well thought with the same craft as other Ideo products. I also recommend the book "Art of Innovation" which talks about Ideo specifically and the practices they use.
Interesting overview on interaction.......2007-01-15
As the internet is still young and rapidly growing in diverse directions, I'm always looking out for books like this, that give a perspective on how things actually started and who were the persons involved in the early stages. It just shows you, that what we consider a "normal" interface or application today is based on the ideas of a few people, real pioneers for their field. And it gives you an idea on how future interfaces might look like. Not the full 5 stars, as the narrative approach turns out to deliver long passages that I would consider a bit too personal and contain little information on the subject.

The New Social Story Book : Illustrated Edition
ASIN: 1931282528 |
Book Description
In this must-have resource, "two teachers from Minnesota" share their successful use of the simple concept of 5-point scales to help students understand and control their emotional reactions to everyday events that might otherwise set in emotion escalating reactions. Whether it is inappropriate touching, obsessions, yelling, hitting or making hurtful statements to classmates, this clearly illustrated book shows how to break down a given behavior and, with the student's active participation, develop a unique scale that identifies the problem and, just as important, suggests alternative, positive behaviors at each level of the scale.

A must buy for any adult working with a special needs child.......2007-02-11
You can make this work for just about any problem. I now just hold up a finger and my child knows what I am trying to say even my younger child is getting it.
Finally.......2007-02-06
Finally, a basic book listing basic skills for people who do not understand "thinking outside the box." I'm so happy to see something that can help educators and families find hands-on techniques for those who are clueless, hopeless, and helpless.
What a great idea!!.......2007-01-07
This book has been very helpful with my Asperger son and my non-Asperger son. As a teachers aide, I have used it the the kids at school and some teachers have borrowed my book and are using it themselves. It has pages to copy so that you can make your own 5-point scale. Just wonderful!!!
Save your Money.......2006-07-16
This is a great concept, but not worth buying a book over.
It is a simple strategy that can be applied in any context -
Rate the behavior; rate the desired behavior.
It gets a mediocre smile or 3 stars.
Helpful and easy to implement.......2006-06-25
It was very easy to implement the program, and my student got it right away.

Book Description
This new book provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes.
Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way.
The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course in statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided. For many students and researchers learning to use these methods, this one book may be all they need to conduct and interpret multipredictor regression analyses.
The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. The senior author, Charles E. McCulloch, is head of the Division and author of Generalized Linear Mixed Models (2003), Generalized, Linear, and Mixed Models (2000), and Variance Components (1992).
From the reviews:
"This book provides a unified introduction to the regression methods listed in the title...The methods are well illustrated by data drawn from medical studies...A real strength of this book is the careful discussion of issues common to all of the multipredictor methods covered."
Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, 2005
"This book is not just for biostatisticians. It is, in fact, a very good, and relatively nonmathematical, overview of multipredictor regression models. Although the examples are biologically oriented, they are generally easy to understand and follow...I heartily recommend the book"
Technometrics, February 2006
"Overall, the text provides an overview of regression methods that is particularly strong in its breadth of coverage and emphasis on insight in place of mathematical detail. As intended, this well-unified approach should appeal to students who learn conceptually and verbally."
Journal of the American Statistical Association, March 2006

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Classroom Management.......2006-02-26
I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph. I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book. I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.
required class reading.......2005-02-22
I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:
"Regardless of the extent to which teachers decide to adapt to the norms and parenting styles of their student's culture or systematically assists students in learning to adapt while maintaining their cultural values, the point is that as educators we are willing to examine our own beliefs and way of working with students in light of the contextual variables existing in the classroom, school and community."
To students who may be required to read this text: Good luck. Perhaps you can change classes before it is too late.
To professors who may add this book to their required reading list: Please, please, please pass on this text and choose something more relevant and tangible for your students.
To educators who may choose this book to answer questions or add to their professional library: choose something else. This book is useless. My advice is your time will be better spent going to talk to teachers who have been in the field rather than reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
If you're going to buy one book on Non-Verbal Communication..........2007-01-09
I've recently become fascinated with the subject of non-verbal communication -- both as a scientific/psychological/anthropological discipline, and as a way to improve real life communication skills -- and I can honestly say whether your interest in 'body language' is scientific or practical, buy this book. I've bought many, many books on the subject and even purchased a home-study course on body language, and in my opinion this is the most comprehensive single volume on non-verbal communication available. The knowledge within this book is easy to practically apply and scientifically sound.
Other great books on the subject include:
Fundamentals of Non-Verbal Behavior (Ed. Feldman and Rime)
Unmasking the Face (Paul Ekman -- featured in 'Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction)
The Hidden Dimension (Hall)
The Silent Language (Hall)
The application of reading body language in photographs found in Kevin Hogan's Body Language course ([...]) is really valuable as well, and his practical suggestions for improving one's own communication are a smart distillation of what could easily have become a cumbersome amount of information in this area, but for detailed and thorough scientific work in the study and application of Body Language, start with Mark Knapp! Highly Recommended!!!
Great Resource for Researchers.......2005-08-19
This is a terrific compilation of research into nonverbal communication. It is a thoroughly sourced review of writings on nonverbal topics, tending toward a psychological, academic tone.
Note: If you are seeking original research, Knapp's and Hall's book would be a good reference aid. However, in this work they are content to primarily synthesize the work of others. That said, they do a marvelous job of collecting and reporting on a wealth of valuable insights.
Classic work in the field of nonverbal communication.......2001-07-24
Dr. Knapp has been a distinguished scholar in the field of communication for the past 35 years. This is a very small sampling of his honors: He is a Fellow of the International Communication Association and has served as its President. He received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Speech Communication Association in l993 and served as President of that association in l989-90. Dr. Knapp is the author of many articles and several books besides this one, including: Interpersonal Communication and Human Relationships (with A. Vangelisti) and Handbook of Interpersonal Communication (with G. Miller). Dr. Knapp has acted as consultant, lecturer, and trainer for over fifty different business organizations, voluntary groups, and government agencies. He is currently a Professor in the Communication Department at the University of Texas at Austin. ...
Dr. Hall has also been a well-respected scholar for over 20 years. She obtained her Ph.D. at Harvard and is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where she teaches social-personality psychology, interpersonal and nonverbal communication, gender differences and health psychology. She has published many scholarly articles and books on the subject of nonverbal communication...
Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction is a textbook used in communication and psychology departments at universities all over the country. It is considered a classic work in the field of nonverbal communication. Whether you are just beginning to read about this topic or you have studied it extensively, this book will be useful to you. There is an index, a comprehensive table of contents, extensive footnotes and lists of further readings on this subject at the end of every chapter.
In short, if you read this book, you can be sure that you have gained thoroughly accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive information on the subject of nonverbal communication. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Let's "talk" nonverbally!.......2000-03-26
It's enough to read the table of contents - and you're amazed, astonished of possibilities to communicate without the words! I just can't imagine how it would be to read the whole book... Super, turbo, extra, lux!
