Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Mathematical Statistics with Applications
by William Mendenhall and other authors is a higher level university text on probability and statistics, dealing with some of the underlying mathematics and calculus, moments, probability generation functions and all that sort of thing.
Definitely not your light right type of mathematics books by any stretch of the imaginaiton.
Many ,many errors to odd number problems.......2007-09-02
This book has good explanations of the topics covered in each section , but the solutions to the odd numbered problems are full of errors. I can't stand this book anymore , I need to check my solutions to reinforce my knowledge and the book doesn't provide correct solutions.
I would recommend to everyone to stay away from this book.
Anything but Wackerly.......2007-02-20
This is an adequate text up until chapter 6. The probability chapter the the discrete probability distributions are great. The concepts and derivations are logically laid out and make sense. Things begin to get frustrating in chapter 4 and really fall apart after chapter 6. After chapter four the author no longer tries to put anything in context. He derives very little and simply states long, cryptic formulas and expects the reader to magicaly understand the big picture and fill in the gaps on their own. He skips over the over 200 years of the development in statictical theory and simply states the results and the student is expected to fill in the gap. The most self evident properties are expounded on in the chapters and the most important and subtle properties are hidden in the exercises or neglected altogether. I am nearly finished with my undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and am mathematicaly mature. I am comfortable with both applied and pure/proof-type mathematics and this text makes my stomach turn. It makes me want to reconsider my major. I am giving this text 2 stars simply because the first 5 chapters are adequate. If you just need a course in probability, this might be the text for you. If you need to move on to statistical inference and you need the big picture/contextual background explained rather than pluging and chuging blindly with nonsensical formulas, then this is not the text for you. Way to drop the ball, Wackerly!
Very good textbook.......2007-01-08
I used Wackerly's book in an advanced stats class which covered all of the material up to chapter 5.8 (covariance). I am not a math major but an Economics major with mediocre math skills. I have to say that as math books go I really enjoyed using this book. The problems it presented challenged me but not so much so that I was completely frustrated 100% of the time. There were parts of the second and third chapters where I was a little lost, but the fourth and fifth chapters were excellently well written.
Unfortunately the class I was in did not go over the second half of the book over hypothesis testing and linear regression. Though in browsing through those sections, it seems they are given as thurough a treament as the first half of the book was. It was especially encourgaing for me to see the sections on linear regression handled in matrix notation (along with the well done matrix algebra appendix), which is what one would expect to see in a graduate level Econometrics or Applied Regression Analysis course.
So in short if you are a math major and want to do the derivation of the formulas, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. But if you are in the hard-sciences, engineering, business, or Economics (this is probably too mathy for most other social science persons), this is a terrific book with many, many applied examples.
My only qualm with this book is that it shied away from using a lot more examples from Economics and Finance when it would have been great to do so. So if you want to see how all of the analysis of probability and associated tools can be applied to Finance, then you will need to supplement Wackerly's textr with a graduate level Finance text in an area such as investments.
Average book.......2006-10-01
This book is not rigorous at all. If you are looking for rigor, look elsewhere. The proofs are very weak, and the example trite.
Still it is not a total loss. If you don't care about mathematical rigor, this can serve as a decent book.
I wouldn't dream of using it if you are working on a stats based degree.

Book Description
This book provides an account of weak convergence theory and empirical processes and their applications to a wide variety of applications in statistics. The first part of the book presents a thorough account of stocastic convergence in its various forms. Part 2 brings together the theory of empirical processes in a form accessible to statisticians and probabilists. In Part 3, the authors cover a range of topics which demonstrate the applicability of the theory to important questions such as: limit theorems in asymptotic statistics; measures of goodness of fit; the bootstrap; and semiparametric estimation. Most of the sections conclude with "problems and complements". Some of these are exercises to help the reader's understanding of the material whereas others are intended to supplement the text.

Book Description
This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.
Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by:
*a statement of the hypothesis being tested;
*a schematic representation of the model under study;
*the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus;
*a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files;
*a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; and
*the published reference from which each application was drawn.

Structural Equation Modeling With AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming (Multivariate Applications Series).......2007-02-21
Great book, easy to read. It goes well as a companion book about SEM with a more mathematically heavy text. The author makes using AMOS easy! I've already shown my Professor something about AMOS he didn't know!
Great Resource.......2006-01-29
If you are looking for a good resource on learning how to use AMOS for structural equation modeling, this is definitely the book. It is easy to understand and well laid out. Well recommended, especially for teaching SEM to students.
wonderful if familiar w/stats + new to sem.......2001-08-07
This book is a wonderful guide to understanding a good range of basics about sem, getting models to work with Amos, and interpreting your output. You will need to be familiar with one of the stats packages that Amos is compatible with. Very much user-friendly in this complicated topic. All of the statistically-related and theory-related aspects are well-referenced, so you can find sources to reference for different aspects of sem. A great book to fill the gap between the Amos user's manual and books on sem in general. (contact Erlbaum about educ pricng.)

Book Description
This classic, calculus-based introduction to the theory and application of statistics provides an unusually comprehensive depth and breadth of coverage and reflects the latest in statistical thinking and current practices.
New to this edition is the addition of an applications section at the end of each chapter that deals with the theory presented. Further emphasis has been placed on the use of computers in performing statistical calculations. Topics covered include probability distributions and densities, random variables, sampling distributions, hypothesis testing, regression and correlation, variance, and more.
An excellent reference work for professional statisticians in a variety of fields.
Customer Reviews:
For Advanced Undergrads and Beginning Grad Students.......2007-09-07
If you are taking a math stat class on the level of Casella and Berger this is a GREAT text to use for background (I speak from experience). To get the most out of this book, the level of math needed is a full sequence of undergrad calculus (3 or 4 semesters depending on your university).
I didn't like it.......2007-01-12
I usually keep all my textbooks, but I sold this one. My professor said this is one of the better probability textbooks out there, but his statement didn't change my mind at all.
The problems are scattered throughout the reading and often refer to other previous problems (perhaps to save on printing costs). I did like the fact that later sections added upon previous homework problems, but since page numbers were never included, I found myself scouring the pages in search of the correct reference. Needless to say, it was frustrating.
I think there are other problems with the book, but I hesitate to discuss them without looking at comparable textbooks. It is possible that this is one of the better probability books, but I didn't like it.
NOt a good book for a beginner!.......2007-01-07
Not a good book for students either, but a very good one if you need to brush up on something you have been using for a long time. The language is kinda not easy to understand, not enough solved examples to explain.
This Book is not well written........2006-11-09
I understand math fairly well. This book does not supply you with any well written examples. I agree with the one review the use of clearly and obviously is used fair to often. This book is used for most intro classes into statistics. If you do not have a good professor you can really struggle in your study. The book also has many errors with its answer in the back of the book or in the questions themselves. The referencing of a new question to a previous question gets old real quick. I disagree with the other review that it forces you to understand a concept. To understand a concept in math you need very detailed information which I believe you do not get from this book.
Not that bad.......2006-02-02
What happened to the good reviews I remember reading about this book on this page ? See reviews for 6th edition. A book doesn't go through seven editions if it is a one star book. The criticism that the book references exercises as part of the main stream of the text is true but it is not necessary to work those problems to understand the main text. I never saw a case where the answer given for the odd numbered problem required an even numbered problem (for which answers are not given) as part of the explanation. I'm sure it's true but what is the probability of that happening :) ? Understanding and learning are different. It is possible to understand a book and learn nothing. This book forces the reader to learn.

Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction.......2007-04-17
I found this to be a well written, easy to comprehend introduction to MatLab programming. I had programs written and running within the first two hours of reading it. Makes a great quick reference as well.
The BEST first MATLAB book for sicentists and engineers.......2006-11-08
This book is a true joy to read. It is well-organized, well-written, and provides the most clearly illustrated (through examples and figures) introduction to MATLAB I have found. More importantly, it is specifically geared to scientists and engineers e.g. those seeking to exploit MATLAB's numerical methods capabilities either for teaching, learning, or researching. Each chapter contains relevant and useful exercises from the material and provides complete answers for you to check your work right away. The sections on graphics and publishing are very nice and demonstrate how MATLAB is a full-service software tool. The second half of the book provides an excellent overview of "Applications" - basically, numerical methods using MATLAB. The book focuses on the built-in functions for root finding, quadrature, ODEs, etc. but not the details of the algorithms themselves (here it refers you to a numerical methods textbook). This should be the first book any scientist or engineers buys when starting to learn MATLAB. The MATLAB Guide by Higham and Higham (2nd Edition, SIAM) should be next . . . Enjoy!
Well worth it for beginners.......2006-05-06
This book is extremely helpful for novice MATLAB users who need to generate results quickly. It is concise and easy to navigate.
Good Book.......2006-02-21
This is a very fine resource for laerning Matlab from the introductory level.
An easy Intro!.......2006-01-30
I think this is a really nice and user friendly book if you look for a painless intro to mathlab, or if you look for the quick and essential tips that can get you started hands-on with a few functions or programs. No prerequisites are needed!
Of the computer and programming tools out there in math and in CS, Matlab is probably the one that it tailored more directly to numerical computations and to matrices (to graphics too!); as opposed to symbolic manipulations, where perhaps Mathematica and Mable have an edge. Yet, these choices often come down to a matter of taste, and to what you are used to. Or what the book or the class is steering you towards.
Still, I noticed over the past year, that teachers and students involved with elementary numerical analysis, math, or CS courses have liked this little book. And yet, there are lots of other Matlab-books out there; as well as manuals, step-by-step guides, etc; and some are even free on the web. Thanks God for Google! But this little book seems especially attractive for beginners.

Book Description
Gerald Keller's new APPLIED STATISTICS WITH MICROSOFT® EXCEL integrates Excel into the general introductory statistics course. Keller, the co-author of the market-leading STATISTICS FOR MANAGEMENT AND ECONOMICS, Fifth Edition, incorporates his proven three-step problem-solving process throughout this book. The first step, "Identify," is the work a statistician does before the calculations are performed, which entails organizing the experiment, gathering the data, and deciding which statistical techniques to employ. The second step, "Compute," is the computation with Excel. In this step, Keller shows the manual calculation for the simplest of techniques only. For example, he describes how to calculate the sample mean, variance, and standard deviation, how to compute the z-interval estimate of, and the z-test of. The third step, "Interpret," is the interpretation of the computer output, which requires an understanding of statistical concepts.

I really just had to take the class to finish my masters. The book explains the theories behind the formulas. Having an instructor was very help to understand it all.
Best Math text I have read.......2007-07-10
I have a large library of math texts from many years in school and I have never read one that was so much fun. This book is really interesting and practical. Finally a statistics book that does more than scare the wit out of somebody. I would highly recommend that more professors choose this book for their students.
Excellent beginner and expert book for Applied Statistics.......2007-02-11
I have used this book in my classroom for the last 3 years and found it very illustrative and simple for students to comprehend statistics. It covers theory with practical examples and therefore keeps it 'real' for students. I have used other books in the past, but students found them theoretical and 'brain show-offs' by authors who really did not care for student comprehensions unless they were math majors. This book is far different and even beginner students can easily relate to the hundreds of practical examples that the author provides.
The Excel examples are easy to follow and my science students usually pick up many practical models from these examples. The regression covered at the beginning level in Chapter 3 is fully covered in multiple regressions in Chapters 17 &18 in a way that makes it easy to teach...
Of the 40-60 stats books I have in my office, this is by far my favorite....

Book Description
An accessible introduction to probability, stochastic processes, and statistics for computer science and engineering applications
This updated and revised edition of the popular classic relates fundamental concepts in probability and statistics to the computer sciences and engineering. The author uses Markov chains and other statistical tools to illustrate processes in reliability of computer systems and networks, fault tolerance, and performance.
This edition features an entirely new section on stochastic Petri nets?as well as new sections on system availability modeling, wireless system modeling, numerical solution techniques for Markov chains, and software reliability modeling, among other subjects. Extensive revisions take new developments in solution techniques and applications into account and bring this work totally up to date. It includes more than 200 worked examples and self-study exercises for each section.
Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications, Second Edition offers a comprehensive introduction to probability, stochastic processes, and statistics for students of computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and applied mathematics. Its wealth of practical examples and up-to-date information makes it an excellent resource for practitioners as well.
An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.
Customer Reviews:
When theory and practical application go together.......2006-07-31
This book from Prof. K. Trivedi is another great guide for the novice student and the expert researcher for modeling tools and techniques. It builds upon neatly explained concepts of probability, queuing and stochastic processes to provide a variety of examples of applications. It is definitely a book that one has to keep at hand, as it contains recipes for a huge number of performance and dependability evaluation needs. Besides the rich content, the structure and the presentation are great: a bit of theory and soon one example from practical life, the reader never gets lost but he is rather brought step by step to a comprehensive understanding of the topics.
A Valuable and Indispensable Book........2004-02-10
The "Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications - 2nd edition " by Kishor S. Trivedi is a valuable reference for students and professionals. Didactically organized the eleven chapters presents the core concepts of probability theory and stochastic processes in an accessible easy-to-understand approach. The rich set of examples and exercises, based on numerous computer science and engineering real world applications, allow the readers to build their knowledge gradually.
I would like to highlight the system reliability fundamentals covered and articulate with the remains topics.
An Excellent Statistics Book for CS Students.......2003-09-01
Second edition of "Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications" by Kishor S. Trivedi is a highly recommendable book. The concepts provided for probability theory and stochastic processes are excellent for students of communication, networking and computer science. It provides a good understanding of stochastic processes and Markov chains which are very relevant for students and teachers especially working in the speech processing area. I found the book and its contents very relevant and the examples provided could be very well related to networking and computer science, a unique aspect of this book. The students grasped the concepts well and found the problems very challenging and helpful in building up their concepts and knowledge. I had previously taught a number of other books and introduced this book last year at my University, I feel very satisfied and content with the decision of choosing this book for my students. All eleven chapters are equipped with excellent examples, problems and exercises broadening the reader's mind. The first 5 chapters constitute the probability theory while the rest of the chapters emphasize on stochastic processes very relevant to students of advanced networking and speech processing. Other books on probability and statistics usually lack an important aspect specially when used for computer science and telecommunication students. The examples and exercises not only make students learn and understand and probability and statistics concepts but also create its relevance to their very fields, therefore the book is an extremely precious gift from Prof. Trivedi specially for the students of computer science and telecommunication. An inexpensive Asian edition (paperback), a solution manual and powerpoint slides of each chapter are now available.
Prof. Trivedi has done a tremendous job in introducing topics of advanced research not found before; the students gained knowledge about the modern research environment and felt confident too. This book is not only recommended for beginners but also for professionals and engineers.
An extremely useful book.......2003-08-06
A very useful book. A good choice for somebody who is just starting to get a feel of the subject, or someone who is looking to build a strong foundation in the area. The best feature of this book is its lucid language. There are many books in the market, which cover a lot of material but, for the average reader, are very difficult to understand. The example-based approach coupled with a comprehensive material coverage are additional selling points. I would highly recommend this book

Customer Reviews:
This book is a tool shed.......2007-09-06
As one of the previous reviewers noted this book offers no (very few to be accurate) proofs. While I would normally pounce on an author for neglecting proofs and rigor, Winston approach is rather refreshing and practical. It is like a tool shed filled with tools that one may use without completely understanding its composition. This book is very accessible to people who are not very mathematically apt and provides a gentle introduction for those advanced in mathematics. If you want a general introduction to LP and NLP before you dive into the meat and potatoes (rigor and proofs) or if you want to just pick up some methods to optimize operations related tasks, I highly recommends this book.
Very helpful book.......2006-03-21
This isn't your regular review here, because I'm guessing we all "have" to buy this book when we take the course.
This book is very helpful for students of all levels. I took it for an "operations research" class after more than 7 years of not studying any math. Still, the first few chapters offer a recap of algebra needed for the course. In the subsequent chapters, everything progresses slowly with lots of examples, (which is helpful if you miss a class or two).
Good luck with the class using this book then.
Well Done.......2005-09-23
Package arrived in orderly fashion. Everything that was suppose to be included was shipped. ie. the Book and the solution manual.
