Introduction to Simulink with Engineering Applications
Steven T. Karris Manufacturer: Orchard Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0974423971 |
Product Description
This text is an introduction to Simulink, a companion application to MATLAB. It is written for students at the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as for the working professional. Although some previous knowledge of MATLAB would be helpful, it is not absolutely necessary; Appendix A of this text is an Introduction to MATLAB to enable the reader to begin learning both MATLAB and Simulink to perform graphical computations and programming. Chapters 2 through 18 describe the blocks of all Simulink libraries. Their application is illustrated with practical examples through Simulink models, some of which are supplemented with MATLAB functions, commands, and statements. Chapters 1 and 19 contain several Simulink models to illustrate various applied math and engineering applications. Appendix B is an introduction to difference equations as they apply to discrete{time systems, and Appendix C introduces the reader to random generation procedures. This text supplements our Numerical Analysis with MATLAB and Spreadsheet Applications, ISBN 0-9709511-1-6. It is self-contained; the blocks of each library are described in an orderly fashion that is consistent with Simulink¡¦s documentation. This arrangement provides insight into how a model is used and how its parts interact with each another. Like MATLAB, Simulink can be used with both linear and nonlinear systems, which can be modeled in continuous time, sample time, or a hybrid of these. Examples are provided in this text. Most of the examples presented in this book can be implemented with the Student Versions of MATLAB and Simulink. A few may require the full versions of these outstanding packages, and can be skipped. Some add{ons, known as Toolboxes and Blocksets can be obtained from The MathWorks, Inc., 3 Apple Hill Drive, Natick, MA 01760{2098, USACustomer Reviews:

Excellent Starter.......2005-05-19
Excellent to learn with and then use as a reference........2004-09-23
A Quick Introduction..........2002-02-25
Then came MATLAB which is a class that is required to be taken by all EE students. I got this book because it had the word "quick". Time is a very important factor when it comes to learning a new language, whether a living language (like French) or a programming language (like C++ or MATLAB).
This book is really a nice way to get you started with confidence. I rarely use the assigned book for the class, I use this one instead. Very easy to read and step by step instructions.
Highly recommended for anyone who's just started working on MATLAB.
Even after you get used to MATLAB, this book can be used as a reference book to find some important commands with examples and illustrtions.

Good job..........2002-02-27
The books that come with the software are extremely weak (by design) and the only comparable beginner's book I came across is the one they give you at Mathworks' training classes. Either way, this book is a good buy.
Very good for beginner..........2000-07-30
Very good quick introduction.......2000-07-07
Only if you "fear" Matlab.......2000-05-14
But frankly, you'd get just as much -- and more -- information from the Matlab User's Guide, which comes ()with the software.() It unfortunately does not go beyond the most basic functions of Matlab, and at the end you will still be left wondering what Matlab really can do -- and what it can do *for you*.
Case in point: the discussion on functions (something that always intimidates me when I learn a new language/package) starts out easy, and suddenly becomes confusing, leaving the reader yearning for more information and more examples. The lack of good examples is another problem with this slim ()volume.
A good introductory book should be like DiIorio's "SAS Applications Programming": easy enough to NOT intimidate the beginner, yet deep and comprehensive enough to enable the reader to get real work done -- and to encourage the reader to learn more advanced topics. (After all, we use stats software like Matlab to get real work done, not just to impress our girlfriends.) While this book may seem "friendly" at the start, its total lack of depth unfortunately can make one feel even more intimidated about Matlab.
Getting started, but that's about all.......2000-04-15

Mathematical Biology: An Introduction with Maple and Matlab (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
Ronald W. Shonkwiler Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387709835 |
Book Description
A greatly expanded and updated edition of the popular Introduction to the Mathematics of Biology (Yeargers, Shonkwiler and Herod, Birkhäuser 1996), this textbook aims to present mathematical biology as not merely the intrusion of one science into another, but rather as a field with a unity of its own. It retains and expands on the concept of the "computer biology laboratory,” giving students a general perspective of the field before proceeding to more specialized topics. The book is a product of extensive classroom experience, and the student response to it has been exhilarating due to its focus on problems of contemporary interest such as cancer, genetics and aging.
A unique feature of the book is its integration of a computer algebra system into the flow of ideas, in a supporting but unobtrusive role. Syntax for both the Maple and Matlab systems is provided in a side-by-side format. The use of a computer algebra system gives students the opportunity to examine "what if” scenarios, thereby allowing them to to grasp important mathematical and biological concepts in a way not otherwise possible. For students without access to Maple or Matlab, each topic presented is complete. Graphic visualizations are provided for all mathematical results.
This book focuses on problems of contemporary interest. It includes new chapters on parasites, cancer, and phylogenetics, as well as an introduction to online resources for DNA and protein lookups and popular pattern matching tools such as BLAST. One major new topic presented is that of genomics, a rapidly growing field. Just as mathematics once became indispensable for the study of physics, with genomics mathematics has become indispensable for biology. The discussion of genomics in this book also presents the many subdisciplines it has given rise to, and it introduces the emerging field of algebraic statistics as a powerful tool in genomics.
Mathematical Biology includes extensive exercises, problems and examples to help students grasp the concepts fully. A year of calculus is required to understand the material presented, while no previous coursework in biology is necessary. The mathematics presented proceeds from the simple to the more complex, while the biology proceeds from the study of populations down to the molecular level. Overall, the book will be appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students studying mathematics or biology, and it also lends itself well to self-study for scientists and researchers who wish to explore this exciting frontier of the applications of mathematics and computers in the natural sciences.

Evolutionary Intelligence: An Introduction to Theory and Applications with Matlab
S. Sumathi , T. Hamsapriya , and P. Surekha Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540751580 |
Book Description
This book gives a good introduction to evolutionary computation for those who are first entering the field and are looking for insight into the underlying mechanisms behind them. Emphasizing the scientific and machine learning applications of genetic algorithms instead of applications to optimization and engineering, the book could serve well in an actual course on adaptive algorithms. The authors include excellent problem sets, these being divided up into "thought exercises" and "computer exercises" in genetic algorithm. Practical use of genetic algorithms demands an understanding of how to implement them, and the authors do so in the last two chapters of the book by giving the applications in various fields. This book also outlines some ideas on when genetic algorithms and genetic programming should be used, and this is useful since a newcomer to the field may be tempted to view a genetic algorithm as merely a fancy Monte Carlo simulation. The most difficult part of using a genetic algorithm is how to encode the population, and the authors discuss various ways to do this. Various "exotic" approaches to improve the performance of genetic algorithms are also discussed such as the "messy" genetic algorithms, adaptive genetic algorithm and hybrid genetic algorithm.
