Book Description
Quantitative methods and mathematical modelling are of critical importance to fishery science and management but, until now, there has been no book that offers the sharp focus, methodological detail, and practical examples needed by non-specialist fishery scientists and managers, and ecologists. Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries fills that void. To date, methodology books in fisheries science have been limited to cookbook approach to problems; simple compilations; or expositions in which either too much theory or insufficient methodological detail is given. The text is organized into three sections: an introduction to modelling in fisheries and ecology, a straight methodology section covering a range of methods, and a section focusing on specific fields in fisheries science. This book is timely as it addresses a topic of recent debate in fisheries and ecology, describing and comparing the uses of Least Squares, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian quantitative methods. Designed as stand-alone units, each chapter provides examples from both classic and recent literature and comes with dedicated Excel spreadsheets that permit you to delve into every detail of the analysis. All of these spreadsheets serve as active examples, which can easily be modified and customized and can be used as templates for analyzing your own data. The spreadsheets permit you to learn at your own speed and cover the simplest linear regression to the more complex non-linear modelling using maximum likelihood. Data analysis and modelling are best learned by doing and not just by reading. This book illustrates, step by step, the analyses it covers. More detailed in terms of introductory quantitative methods and modelling as applied to fisheries than any other book available, Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries gives you the advantage by supplying the full details of the analysis so that understanding the material is a matter of following the book.
Customer Reviews:
A primer for all of us.......2003-12-29
In my opinion, Malcolm Haddon has managed a "tour de force" with this book. He not only covered most of the modern methods of quantitative analysis and modelling in fisheries science but he did so in a clear and relatively simple language. His book is approachable to all biologists with a basic understanding of mathematics and statistics. Yet, he managed to cover both the theoretical underpinnings of the methods and the practical aspects of their use (options, pitfalls ... etc.). In addition, the book gives MS Excel examples of the methods which should allow those of us who are not programmers to fully appreciate the methods by using them interactively. The Excel spreadsheets are also available for download on two web sites.

Modelling and Quantitative Methods in Fisheries
ASIN: 0691034974 |
Book Description
The modern ecologist usually works in both the field and laboratory, uses statistics and computers, and often works with ecological concepts that are model-based, if not model-driven. How do we make the field and laboratory coherent? How do we link models and data? How do we use statistics to help experimentation? How do we integrate modeling and statistics? How do we confront multiple hypotheses with data and assign degrees of belief to different hypotheses? How do we deal with time series (in which data are linked from one measurement to the next) or put multiple sources of data into one inferential framework? These are the kinds of questions asked and answered by The Ecological Detective.
Ray Hilborn and Marc Mangel investigate ecological data much as a detective would investigate a crime scene by trying different hypotheses until a coherent picture emerges. The book is not a set of pat statistical procedures but rather an approach. The Ecological Detective makes liberal use of computer programming for the generation of hypotheses, exploration of data, and the comparison of different models. The authors' attitude is one of exploration, both statistical and graphical. The background required is minimal, so that students with an undergraduate course in statistics and ecology can profitably add this work to their tool-kit for solving ecological problems.
Customer Reviews:
Difficult reading for a novice statistican.......2007-05-14
I found the book to be worth the price but very difficult to read. I am a biologist with only an introductory level education in statistics and I couldn't read between the lines well enough to comprehend many of the points that the author was making. In many instances, the reader was provided with a summary of facts or different opinions, but then no conclusions or recommendations were presented. On the other hand, this book covers many very important topics that are not discussed elsewhere.
Just OK........2006-03-03
While the first chapter on the tools of the "ecological detective" and the second chapter on modeling and philosophies of science are good, the rest of the book is just OK. Many of the topics in the book you can find elsewhere (e.g., the different types of probability models in Chapter 3). There is a mistake in the AIC formula on page 159. Therefore, it is a good synopsis of ecological "tools," and the philosophy of multiple working hypotheses, but it really doesn't present anything groundbreaking.
Useful but on occasion abstruse.......2001-03-24
Hilborn and Mangel should be congratulated, if only for re-publishing Chamberlain's essay on Multiple Woorking Hypotheses, which should be on every ecologist's "Must Read" list but has till now been all too hard to find. Beyond that however the authors give some fascinating examples of ecological analysis based on real-world data, with clear explanations of the perils & pitfalls that they themselves have had to skirt. I have most of the Princeton Monographs, but find that this one is already more dog-eared than many of the others that have sat on the shelf much longer.
Great Book!.......2000-06-15
This is a great book. Read it and keep it.
Excellent Book!.......2000-05-25
The Ecological Detective was an excellent, very readable introduction to the idea of combining data and models. Hilborn and Mangel have made a good case for something other than Popperian hypothetico-deductive methods in ecology, and done so in a way that demystifes the use of ecological models, maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian statistics. Very readable.

Book Description
With NATO's bombing campaign against Serbia now over, what strategic, long-range plans will the alliance employ to restore stability to the region? As the global economy continually changes in response to worldwide events, what investment strategies will firms implement to cope with changing markets? And how can major pharmaceutical companies solve the problem of having newly-developed products abandoned before they can even be launched on the market? This book is designed and written to give the applied statistician an insight into all these areas of investigation.
Customer Reviews:
the only practical book on System dynamics.......2007-09-24
This is the only book worth reading about the field of System Dynamics if you are interested into concrete implementations of the method.
It works with concrete cases as related from the client with plain words and builds progressively models starting from a qualitative point of view, then building a quantitative model showing in the process the added value of it.
It has too several chapters on the concrete use of policy optimisation.
The cases are both open or closed systems (with or without exogenous variables) and are varied.
It does not try to hide the difficulties of the method by simplifying
the problems, and the cases look realistic contrarily to many other books.
The only drawback is the presentation and the use of a language that is
probably no more sold and rarely used.
But is is relatively easy to translate the models into another more used package.
The author of the book is clearly somebody who has a perfect mastering of the theory of System Dynamics and both a long experience of using it on
concrete cases.
This is very rare among authors of scientific books and worth to be mentionned.

Book Description
Algorithmic, or automatic, differentiation (AD) is concerned with the accurate and efficient evaluation of derivatives for functions defined by computer programs. No truncation errors are incurred, and the resulting numerical derivative values can be used for all scientific computations that are based on linear, quadratic, or even higher order approximations to nonlinear scalar or vector functions. In particular, AD has been applied to optimization, parameter identification, equation solving, the numerical integration of differential equations, and combinations thereof. Apart from quantifying sensitivities numerically, AD techniques can also provide structural information, e.g., sparsity pattern and generic rank of Jacobian matrices.

Book Description
Over the last decade, dynamical systems theory and related nonlinear methods have had a major impact on the analysis of time series data from complex systems. Recent developments in mathematical methods of state-space reconstruction, time-delay embedding, and surrogate data analysis, coupled with readily accessible and powerful computational facilities used in gathering and processing massive quantities of high-frequency data, have provided theorists and practitioners unparalleled opportunities for exploratory data analysis, modelling, forecasting, and control.
Until now, research exploring the application of nonlinear dynamics and associated algorithms to the study of economies and markets as complex systems is sparse and fragmentary at best.
Modelling and Forecasting Financial Data brings together a coherent and accessible set of chapters on recent research results on this topic. To make such methods readily useful in practice, the contributors to this volume have agreed to make available to readers upon request all computer programs used to implement the methods discussed in their respective chapters.
Modelling and Forecasting Financial Data is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students studying complex systems in finance, biology, and physics, as well as those applying such methods to nonlinear time series analysis and signal processing.

Book Description
As people come to realize the importance of the environmental impact of human activities, the study of the coastal zone has become increasingly important. In addition, new environmental legislation at regional, national, and international levels will doubtless highlight the importance of a fuller understanding of the coastal areas. Together, these factors have led to substantial new requirements for the acquisition and monitoring of relevant environmental information and for a fuller understanding of the processes at work-work for which the use of remote sensing techniques is essential. To meet the requirements of this emerging discipline, Physical Processes in the Coastal Zone: Computer Modelling and Remote Sensing integrates basic physical processes with extensive information from remote sensing systems such as those on aircraft and spacecraft. It covers the physical processes that occur in the coastal zone, an area in which 60% of the world's population live. Written by international experts, the text provides a comprehensive, graduate-level introduction and overview that is suitable both for those entering the field and for those already working within it.

Book Description
Today, fluid power systems, hydraulic and pneumatic, in alliance with advanced electronics, provide the world with an unprecedented array of applications and systems from heavy-lifting equipment to spray painting, injection moulding, motion control and product assembly. In common with other facets of modern industrial operation, fluid power systems must be examined with a view to obtaining:
- the highest product quality;
- optimised efficiency;
- improved safety;
- maximum profitability.
Modelling, Monitoring and Diagnostic Techniques for Fluid Power Systems covers the background theory of fluid power and indicates the range of concepts necessary for a modern approach to condition monitoring and fault diagnosis in a readable an understandable fashion. The theory is constantly leavened by 15-years-worth of practical measurements by the author, working in association with major fluid power companies, and real industrial case studies – hot-strip-mill monitoring in conjunction with Corus p.l.c. being just one example.
The comprehensive reference for its subject, this book gives the first integrated exposition of the fluid power applications of many of the techniques it describes: time-encoded signal processing; artificial neural networks and expert systems among others. Advantages and limitations of the different paths are presented to emphasise that the reader should consider the gamut of methods leading to positive decision-making regarding fault diagnosis. Four parts combine to produce a thorough and all-embracing whole:
- an introduction to component behaviour;
- a guide to the modelling methods employed for circuit analysis;
- methods for doing condition monitoring;
- common faults and breakdowns.
Modelling, Monitoring and Diagnostic Techniques for Fluid Power Systems tells practicing fluid power engineers all they need to know about keeping track of the "health" of their equipment, processes and products. With nearly four hundred references to provide a good overview of the subject and to stimulate further research, this reference will also be invaluable to graduate and senior undergraduate students entering the field.

Customer Reviews:
The book is valuable, but the title is misleading.......2002-11-09
In the first five chapters, the book gives valuable historical background on the development of Internet, Unixes, Web, and Internet-related tools; encouragingly uncovers the Open Source philosophy; analyzes Open Source in business terms; explains various license types and legal issues; scrutinizes different organizational types, mainly network organizations. It is of vital importance for any Open Source Project participant to understand the philosophy of the Open Source and be aware of the history of the movement.
However, the book does not reach its goal, Managing Open Source Projects. The book title is misleading. The core two chapters, Managing a Virtual Team and Managing Distributed Open Source Projects aren't practical and not very deep.
The final chapters are a quick glance on tools and technologies for building Open Source Projects.
The information given in this book is not enough to start and manage an Open Source project. This book however may be helpful for anyone wanting to contribute to an existing Open Source project.
Practical stuff on Open Source.......2001-12-01
This is a most valuable book on Open Source. There is very little serious information around for those who want to use this model in practice. This one fills the gap. There are evidently several kinds of projects that can benefit, both technically and business wise, from using Open Source as a development model. Read this book before you start! It will help.
It really is a masterpiece.......2001-11-28
I am very glad for having bought the book, it is extremely interesting. Chapter 1 is more than a historical introduction, is the best written chronicle of 25 years that changed the world making everyone's life so different. It really is a masterpiece.
It confirmed a lot of our ideas.......2001-11-22
A friend got me in the loop to read the book. great stuff. It confirmed a lot of our ideas about where things could be going here.
