Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management is not only a complete and current reference for professionals involved in water distribution systems but also an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses. In fact, what makes this book different is that it contains from basic hydraulic concepts up to the most recent researches and experiences in a comprehensive language.

5 out of 5 stars A practical text for real world practice.......2004-03-10

Haestad Methods has provided an excellent text for practical use by engineers. This text is best used in combination with Haestad Method's WaterCAD Software, but still provides enough to be valuable to any engineer who works with water distribution systems. This book is an improvement over the previous "Water Distribution Modeling" text and effectively replaces it. This book is a very useful resource for any civil engineering office that designs water distribution systems. The WaterCAD software program is also fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management.......2004-03-05

This texttbook, that I recently reviewed, was for me a great experience. This is a must have book for any Civil consultant involved in hydraulics. It is both a guide to water modeling and a practical reference to water distribution operation and management. Thanks Haestad Methods.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "How To" Book on Modeling.......2004-03-03

This reference has given us an edge in satisfying client needs from the simplest capacity study to the most complex model. It has helped make our competent modelers more efficient and the up-and coming modeler function like a pro. Many common questions and problems are anticipated and clearly answered. Because the book so thoroughly covers system management issues, I believe many parts should be required reading for water resources engineers.

      Book Description

Solar electricity is a viable, environmentally sustainable alternative to the world’s energy supplies. In support, Dr. Krauter thoroughly examines the various technical parameters of photovoltaic systems. Study of performance and yield (including optical, thermal, and electrical parameters and interfaces) are analyzed. The net energy balance of photovoltaic systems – from production, operation and maintenance, to recycling – is explored. Professor Krauter demonstrates how the importance of accurate yield calculations, optimal system performance, and new prototypes aid in cost reductions. The potential of solar electric power generation as a means to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions is also detailed. In addition, various locations for the production and installation of photovoltaic power plants are considered – with surprising results. Examples, tables and figures are included.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-07-12

Finally someone wrote a book that also treats the interface from the solar cell to the operating conditions in a real environment.
Very nice are also the LCAs (including energy (and CO2) payback via recyling) for different sites of application.

4 out of 5 stars Energy supply via photoelectric power generation - globally.......2006-07-11

This book explores the real potential of solar electric power generation in order to reduce CO2 emissions and prevent the planet from global warming. For this purpose the author analyses the entire energy balance of photovoltaic power plants during their life time from the production to the recycling - taking into account the whole system. He considers all optical interfaces and layers passed by the sunlight from the sun into the solar cell, thermal layout of any photovoltaic module and its heat transfer mechanisms, its related actual electrical properties, allowing an accurate calculation of yield and an optimization of system components, thus reducing costs for solar electricity. Different locations for production and installation of photovoltaic systems are also considered. The concluding message is: If applied in an intelligent way, global energy supply via photo-electric power generation is widely possible.

It requires little or no mathematical background, and is appropriate for undergraduate environmental students as well as professionals new to modelling. Developed from the author's own introductory course, it is classroom-tested and represents an important contribution to the field of system dynamics.

Modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies are becoming increasingly important to environmental management. The models produced are vital analytical tools that aid the policy-setting and implementation process, and help us to understand how environmental systems respond to management interventions.

Modeling the Environment is a basic introduction to one of the most widely known and used modeling techniques, system dynamics. The book is designed to build the skills of students as they progress from learning fundamental ideas to constructing models of increasing complexity. Written in a clear and comprehensible style, the book:

          .

In addition, the book contains more than 300 figures and model illustrations, and provides a guide to an interactive website where students can use the text to "navigate" management flight simulators ? models of both real and hypothetical systems developed by the author. The book also contains appendixes that help students review the necessary math, and which provide additional concepts and exercises for further study.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone.......2006-12-12

This is a great book for anyone who wants to gain a thorough understanding of Stella software. The book is easy to read, and the examples and case studies are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling.......2000-05-24

A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.

3 out of 5 stars Modeling the Environment.......2000-04-24

This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Groundwater Modeling.......2003-05-05

I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.

This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated and of little value.......2001-12-09

I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.

          4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2000-03-31

I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.

            Book Description

A New Approach to Environmental Engineering Education his exciting introduction to environmental modeling unites the principles underlying mass and momentum transport phenomena with environmental processes that ultimately determine the spread and control of pollutants in air, water, and soil.

Transport Modeling for Environmental Engineers and Scientists builds on integrated transport courses pioneered thirty years ago in the chemical engineering curriculum, and demonstrates the underlying unity of mass and momentum transport processes. It describes how these processes operate within the major environmental media, and how they underlie and unify the mechanics common to both pollutant transport and pollution control processes.

Offering a solid foundation for the development of improved environmental designs and models, this comprehensive text:

An excellent text for upper-level undergraduate or first-year graduate courses in environmental and chemical engineering, Transport Modeling for Environmental Engineers and Scientists is also well suited for professional environmental engineers and scientists.
