Supplemental Text.......2007-05-25
This book was recommended by a professor as a good supplemental text. So far, I have been glad I bought it. The main text is very good, but very technical. This book helps to fill in some of the holes that come up.
It is quite bright and colorful inside, and not what I expected. It is easy to read and demonstrates how to get started using MATLAB.

Book Description
Emphasizing problem-solving skills throughout this very successful book, Stephen Chapman introduces the MATLAB language and shows how to use it to solve typical technical problems. The book teaches MATLAB as a technical programming language, showing students how to write clean, efficient, and well-documented programs. It makes no pretense at being a complete description of all of MATLAB's hundreds of functions. Instead, it teaches students how to locate any desired function with MATLAB's extensive online help facilities. Overall, students develop problem-solving skills and are equipped for future courses and careers with the power of MATLAB.

Great from Basic to Advance.......2005-09-17
This is a great book for learning Matlab. It starts from very, very basic stuff, and picks up at a steady pace, teaching u tons of things with ease. This is the official book of my College Course "Computer Programming for Mechanical Engineers", and I'm doing great in it with the help of this book.
A good first book for beginners.......2002-08-24
I am not a full time computer programmer. In spite of my limited programming experience, I was able to follow the lessons in this book. The information is presented in a logical sequence and fully explained and illustrated. As the title suggests, this book is for engineers who need answers for their own use and is not intended to show you how to make fancy illustrations for presentations.
There are two shortcomings that bothered me. One is the lack of a table at the end of each chapter listing the other commands and functions that do almost the same thing as the ones covered in the chapter. This would increase this book's usefulness as a reference. The other problem is the end of each chapter having an illustration of some interesting engineering project or concept. One claimed that Matlab could be used to drastically improve the fuel efficiency of motor vehicles. The other was a half baked political statement to the effect that you would be better off giving irrevocable control of your life over to a group of people who have a history of looking after their own interests first and others second. Of course this suggestion was worded in an appealing style.
It Could be Better........2000-11-03
The book is a good start to MATLAB students but there is a lot of errors in the text. Despite the author's appeal asking everybody to show him the errors, I think it would be better to rewrite the book, mainly because his work could be more useful if he insert a specific chapter about I/O operations, which is, in my opinion, the most dificult thing to do in MATLAB. Examples of I/O operations with several data formats would be useful too.
Great Book!.......2000-10-29
This is a great text. Easy to read and many good examples illustrated in the book allow you to quickly pick up MATLAB, especially the GUI section. It's very clear and up-to-date. Unlike some other texts just tell you the inefficient Matlab 4.x code for the GUI programing.
*I am a undergraduate engineering student by the way.

MatLab 7 for Engineers.......2007-09-25
Almost completely the same as MatLab6 for Engineers no need to buy the new book if you have the previous edition. But does a good job of covering the scope of MatLab.
brief discourses on various maths methods.......2006-10-03
Palm demonstrates the simple versatility of Matlab. Many examples are given that are likely to be encountered by an undergrad engineering student. Matrix methods might be the most useful, given the prevalence of linear systems that you often have to solve.
Matlab can also be used for symbolic algebra. Here the usage may be a bit more specialised. While this can be neat to use, chances are that most engineers will rarely have to use this ability, relative to number crunching.
The book only briefly covers Matlab's probability and statistics functions. It covers the bell curve [normal distribution]. But doesn't really go into anything advanced. Still, remember the book is only meant as an introduction.
Really good book!.......2006-02-18
The content is very effectively edited and presented. The material covers all one needs to know in order to solve various problems and exploit several powerful features of MATLAB. Very good introductory text.
Had to buy it for Class.......2005-10-26
It's one of the text-book requirments I had for my computing class. It works, but... buy the used ones if possbile.
Not very good for coding.......2005-10-20
Although this book has a lot of pertinent information to engineers, I bought it with the intent of learning the fundamentals of coding in MATLAB. I have a class in which our teacher assigns problems in MATLAB, but none of the students have experience in MATLAB. I bought the book to help me figure out how to write codes and it doesn't do that too well, but I could see how it might work well for someone familiar with MATLAB who needs to use it for an engineering problems.

Introduction to the Finite Element Method
ASIN: 0849300967 |
Book Description
Expanded to include a broader range of problems than the bestselling first edition, Finite Element Method Using MATLAB: Second Edition presents finite element approximation concepts, formulation, and programming in a format that effectively streamlines the learning process. It is written from a general engineering and mathematical perspective rather than that of a solid/structural mechanics basis. What's new in the Second Edition? Each chapter in the Second Edition now includes an overview that outlines the contents and purpose of each chapter. The authors have also added a new chapter of special topics in applications, including cracks, semi-infinite and infinite domains, buckling, and thermal stress. They discuss three different linearization techniques to solve nonlinear differential equations. Also included are new sections on shell formulations and MATLAB programs. These enhancements increase the book's already significant value both as a self-study text and a reference for practicing engineers and scientists.
Customer Reviews:
Very good finite element text.......2007-09-25
In this book, the authors expose many aspects of finite element analysis, in a mostly clear and straightforward manner. The in-depth coverage of topics is appreciated, since most books only give an overview of the subject without revealing the details.
Overall, this is an excellent, detailed presentation.
A note to some reviewers: before you comment on a textbook, spend some time - maybe a few years, studying and learning the subject, and maturing as an individual. Then make your comments.
Difficult to understand.......2005-02-06
I took Prof Kwon's class and used this book. It was very difficult to understand. Bathe's book is much more clear.
There has to be a better book to learn FE........2003-06-29
Professor Young Kwon teaches at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. I used this book in his class and found little difference when I compared it to the first edition. The first edition has some minor errors, but the problem sets for each chapter along with the Matlab programs provided are very much the same. The first chapter has some basic Matlab necessities and the second chapter covers weighted residual methods (strong / weak formulation, least squares, collocation, and Galerkin). There is a one paragraph summary of the Raleigh-Ritz method (derived from Calculus of Variations), which is more accurate but not as popular as Galerkin. I found a much better explanation of these weighted residual methods in an undergraduate numerical analysis book. The remainder of the book covered shape functions, isoparametric functions, numerical integration techniques, boundary and initial value problems, eigenvalue problems, beams, shell and plates, and trusses.
Caution:
- If you are planning to use this book as a reference or to educate yourself. STOP! This is a boring and merciless graduate-level book. At times we (study groups) would spend anywhere from half an hour to an hour trying to decipher the sample problems. Don't waste your time looking for the solutions manual; it is harder to follow than the sample problems.
- If you want to learn the core of FE and can program easily, this book would help -- but it won't be easy.
- If you want to learn FE for practical applications, spend your energy using a commercial or open-source FE package.
More general comments:
- If asked to describe this book, I would reply with "grueling".
- The Matlab code is far from being easy to understand. Maybe it's easy to follow the logic, but there is very little documentation to support the code. You will spend A LOT of time figuring out the variables alone, which has a lot to do with how well you understand the code.
- Someone with a non-engineer background would NOT be able to understand this book. Someone with a technical background and a strong math foundation may be able to. For example, this book contains a few topics from Theory of Elasticity. This theory is taught in advanced solid mechanics classes -- not even the undergraduate Mech-E's cover it. You should also have a good handle on matrix algebra, integral calculus, and basic ODE's.
Bottom Line:
I did not like how this book presents the FE Method. If you really need it...good luck!
understanding the finite element method.......2000-08-26
This book carries on from the first edition, lots of new theories and programs have been added. The errors in the last edition(1996) have been corrected. This book is a must for people who want to understand the finite element method and for people who want to learn how to program it using 'Matlab'. Matlab is one of the most widely used programming tool.
I have the old edition but i find this new edition refreshing. The new theories and programs help in digesting the book better.
overall this is an indispensable book for people trying to learn to program the finite element method because it gives a clear understanding of how a finite element code works.
thanks,
kartik srinivas
Excellent finite element text.......1999-11-26
This book is extremely useful, especially for those new to the finite element methods. Despite the fact that it puts a lot of emphasis on matlab, the code is easy to understand and translate into other powerful languages like fortran 90. It took me a few days to start writting my own FEM code after buying the book. I would strongly recommend it even for those with a non-engineering background.

this book presents a theory of control systems clearly and lucidly and presents the matlab simulation of control systems in a way which is most needed for brush-up in the eleventh hour. the author has taken keen interest in presenting the subject right from the grassroot level and a gradual development of the concepts is presented in the easy-to-use tool like way. i firmly believe that this should be in the bag of all engineers working on simulation of control systems.

Book Description
This is a simple, concise, and useful book, explaining MATLAB for freshmen in engineering. MATLAB is presently a globally available standard computational tool for engineers and scientists. The terminology, syntax, and the use of the programming language are well defined and the organization of the material makes it easy to locate information and navigate through the textbook. This new text emphasizes that students do not need to write loops to solve many problems. The MATLAB "find" command with its relational and logical operators can be used instead of loops in many cases. This was mentioned in Palm's previous MATLAB texts, but receives more emphasis in this MATLAB 6 edition, starting with Chapter 1, and re-emphasized in Chapter 4.
Customer Reviews:
Great introductory book on Matlab.......2003-07-17
This is a very good book for novice to learn Matlab. It is clear and concise and with some work-out engineering examples. For beginners to learn Matlab, this book is better than " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" by Edward B. Magrab. But if you already know some basics of Matlab and want more details and advanced functions or egineering examples, " An Engineer's Guide to Matlab" is a better choice.
Excellent introduction to MATLAB.......2003-06-22
This is an excellent introductory book to MATLAB. The examples provided is a great motivation for engineers who tend to shun away from computer programming. During my freshmen year, computer programming was taught by the computer science dept. Their method of teachin is a roller coaster ride for many engineers which resulted many of us, including me to have a phobia in programming. However, Palm has explained the use of MATLAB and programming with clear examples and some interesting exercise to keep one hook onto the subject as well as realizing the importance of MATLAB and programming in engineering.
Therefore, this is a highly recommended book for those who intend to learn more about MATLAB which is an important software for engineers.
My first book in Matlab.......2002-10-10
This books is very good as an introductory for Matlab users, espcially engineers.. It contains alot of enineering problems solved using Matlab. It is good for freshmen students and engineers. It can be studied as a first course in computer programming, rather than Fortran, C or Pascal. I am a lectureur in Electrical Engineering Department. I would recomend it to be studied using this text book.
