4 out of 5 stars Good Overall.......2006-10-11

Pretty thorough text for anyone learning or brushing up on their skills...quite intuitive.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best business statistics book.......2001-10-27

This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better.......2000-10-20

This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully.

Book Description

This book illustrates the ease with which AMOS 4.0 can be used to address research questions that lend themselves to structural equation modeling (SEM). This goal is achieved by: 1) presenting a nonmathematical introduction to the basic concepts and applications of structural equation modeling; 2) demonstrating basic applications of SEM using AMOS 4.0; and 3) highlighting features of AMOS 4.0 that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.

Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through 10 SEM applications from model specification to estimation to the assessment and interpretation of the output. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by:
*a statement of the hypothesis being tested;
*a schematic representation of the model under study;
*the use and function of a wide variety of icons and pull-down menus;
*a full explanation of related AMOS Graphic input models and output files;
*a model input file based on AMOS BASIC; and
*the published reference from which each application was drawn.

5 out of 5 stars Structural Equation Modeling With AMOS: Basic Concepts, Applications, and Programming (Multivariate Applications Series).......2007-02-21

Great book, easy to read. It goes well as a companion book about SEM with a more mathematically heavy text. The author makes using AMOS easy! I've already shown my Professor something about AMOS he didn't know!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-01-29

If you are looking for a good resource on learning how to use AMOS for structural equation modeling, this is definitely the book. It is easy to understand and well laid out. Well recommended, especially for teaching SEM to students.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful if familiar w/stats + new to sem.......2001-08-07

This book is a wonderful guide to understanding a good range of basics about sem, getting models to work with Amos, and interpreting your output. You will need to be familiar with one of the stats packages that Amos is compatible with. Very much user-friendly in this complicated topic. All of the statistically-related and theory-related aspects are well-referenced, so you can find sources to reference for different aspects of sem. A great book to fill the gap between the Amos user's manual and books on sem in general. (contact Erlbaum about educ pricng.)

Great for those trying to get the basic understanding of behavioral statistics. The wording is very plain and easy to understand, yet they also don't ramble. The index works well, and the appendices are highly useful.

4 out of 5 stars Statistics.......2007-09-16

I am using this book for an online graduate statistics course, so there is little direction from a formal instructor. All of my information so far is from this book. It is easy to read and the examples are easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone who is beginning the journey into statistics...very helpful

5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2003-12-01

A unique introductory book in statistics. The hallmark of this book is nodoubt the clarity of detailed explanations of fundamental statistical concepts. A lot of invaluable material and explanantions here not to be found in other textbooks on statistics!
Highlights that spring to my mind are the excellent treatments of averages, correlation and regression, and hypothesis testing. A very important topic (usually missing in most textbooks) is the strength of evidence in hypothesis and significiance testing and is treated very nicely in various parts of the books. This book should not be missed by beginners (and probably experts) in the field.

Book Description

This book illustrates the ease with which various features of LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 can be implemented in addressing research questions that lend themselves to SEM. Its purpose is threefold: (a) to present a nonmathmatical introduction to basic concepts associated with SEM, (b) to demonstrate basic applications of SEM using both the DOS and Windows versions of LISREL 8, as well as both the LISREL and SIMPLIS lexicons, and (c) to highlight particular features of the LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 progams that address important caveats related to SEM analyses.

This book is intended neither as a text on the topic of SEM, nor as a comprehensive review of the many statistical funcitons available in the LISREL 8 and PRELIS 2 programs. Rather, the intent is to provide a practical guide to SEM using the LISREL approach. As such, the reader is "walked through" a diversity of SEM applications that include both factor analytic and full latent variable models, as well as a variety of data management procedures.

Book Description

This volume is the second edition of a work that presents a coherent introduction to the subject of asymptotic statistics as it has developed in the past 50 years. The second edition differs from the first in that it has been made more 'reader friendly'. It also includes a new chapter, Chapter 4, on Gaussian and Poisson experiments because of their growing role in the field, especially in nonparametrics and semi-parametrics. Most of the subsequent chapters have been entirely rewritten and the nonparametrics of Chapter 7 have been ampliefied. Much of the material has been taught in a second year graduate course at Berkeley for 30 years. It represents a link between traditional material including maximum likelihood, and Wald's Theory of Statistical Decision Functions together with comparison and distances for experiments. This volume is not intended to replace monographs on specialized subjects, but it will help to place them in a coherent perspective.
Lucien Le Cam is Professor of Statistics and Mathematics (Emeritus) at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of numerous papers on asymptotics and Asymptotic Methods in Statistical Decision Theory, Springer Verlag (1986). He was co-editor, with J. Neyman and E. Scott of the Berkeley Symposia on Mathematical Statistics and Probability. Grace Lo Yang is Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Maryland, College Park. She is a long time holder of a Faculty Appointment at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD. Her research activities include stochastic modeling in physical sciences and theory of incomplete data.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars asymptotic theory as developed by Le Cam at Berkeley.......2001-03-07

The first edition of this book was written in 1990. Le Cam was Professor of Statistics at the University of California at Berkeley where he taught since 1950. Grace Yang was one of his Ph.D. students who went on to become Professor of Statistics at the University of Maryland. They collaborated for many years. The book is based on lectures Le Cam gave at the University of Montreal in the summer of 1968. It was modified and first published in 1990 with some obsolete material deleted and sketches of new work over the 20 year interim added. This second edition was published just after Le Cam's death in April 2000. The second edition was revised to account for criticism of the first edition. The main criticism was that the book was difficult to understand even by a second year graduate student of statistics. This is clearly an advanced theoretical text but it includes many of Le Cam's important contributions and provides a unified theoretical treatment. Many typographical errors from the first edition have been removed. Chapter 4 is a new chapter on Gaussian and Poisson experiments.

It is by no means a complete treatment as the authors acknowledge in the Preface to the Second Edition material on von Mises differntiable functions, empirical processes and the recent developing school of Donoho and Johnstone is missing. The material on von Mises differentiable functions and empirical processes can be found in three recent texts by van der Vaart, van der Geer and Dudley. However, the authors did not feel prepared to summarize the Donoho and Johnstone work.

Book Description

Mathcad: A Tool for Engineering Problem Solving explains how to use Mathcad 7 (Student and Standard), which is the latest release of the most popular calculation software in the world. It is intended as a supplementary textbook for use in introductory engineering courses but will also, especially in later chapters, be of interest to more advanced students and to practicing engineers. The book has a practical orientation, with many real-world engineering examples used to illustrate the power of Mathcad in solving problems. There are separate chapters on Mathcad fundamentals, graphing data, integration and differentiation (both numeric and symbolic), solving one or more algebraic equations (including non-linear), linear algebra, solving ordinary differential equations (first order or higher, as well as sets of equations), and statistics. In addition, in a final chapter some more advanced features such as Laplace transforms and complex analysis are introduced to show Mathcad's computational power, and Mathcad's integration with World Wide Web is described. There are a large number of exercises throughout the book, with answers provided for many.

3 out of 5 stars Tough Problems and wordiness..........2001-05-17

To do some of the problems in this book you have to know a lot of physics and math. Not good for a lower level course in Engineering. I recently used this book in a semester long course and found that the author overused adjectives, and details to make things far too complicated. However on the bright side the book is very informative, good for a reference to MATHCAD.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2000-06-22

Well, this book is good in a sense that it provides you with exercises that you could work on. But it is kind of wordy, make my eyes go hay wire. Overall, it is a good reference book.

Book Description

"The strongest attribute of Barbara M. Byrne’s book is her superb organization both across chapters and within chapters. . . . Aside from the logical layout of chapters, a great deal of helpful organization exists on many other levels. After making readers comfortable with the details of the input and output files, Byrne gradually weans us away from the masses of information that would otherwise be redundant; she does, however, remind us of key points from time to time, almost anticipating readers’ questions. . . . Organization within chapters is also quite sound. . . . Her EQS input files are neatly structured so that indicators of a common factor are indented to the same degree. . . . All application chapters nicely conclude with references to other examples of the application under study. . . . As should be obvious by now, I was fairly pleased with what I found in Byrne’s book. . . . As the book unfolds she does a nice job of addressing many topics within the context of her applications. . . . It has strong value as a tool for teachers and practitioners."

--Gregory R. Hancock in Structural Equation Modeling

"Several features of the illustrations will be beneficial to SEM novices. The EQS programming and interpretation are presented clearly and in detail so that readers should have little trouble applying the concepts in their own research. An especially nice feature is that, as is usual with ''real'' data, things ''go wrong.'' . . . Seeing realistic rather than idealistic applications is good preparation for practicing and interpreting SEM. . . . The major benefit of the books to experienced modelers who are new to EQS is the convenience of having detailed examples to follow. None of Barbara M. Byrne’s applications involve ''tricks'' or steps that would not be clear from the EQS and EQS/Windows manuals. . . . Byrne’s step-by-step detail and integrated discussion of data screening and model respecification can reduce the time spent fixing minor errors in program setups or searching through the manuals for desired options. . . . The book is a fine production. . . . Newcomers to SEM who want to use EQS or EQS/Windows would benefit greatly from this book, either for self-teaching or as a supplemental text in a course. Experienced modelers will benefit less, but spending a few hours with the book will move them well along the EQS learning curve. Byrne intends her books ''to provide a practical guide to SEM using the EQS approach.'' She succeeds admirably."

--George R. Franke in Journal of Marketing Research

"For each chapter, the author has been very successful in conveying complicated concepts involved in structural equation modeling with explanations that are easy to understand for users with little background in SEM. The examples used in this book represent a broad range of research topics in the area of SEM. The author also provides precise linkage between the null hypothesis to be tested, the specific setup of EQS programs, and clear explanations of the results. Beginners of SEM can benefit substantially from this down-to-earth approach."

--Chih-Ping Chou, University of Southern California

"Byrne’s book is a delightfully written, systematic approach to the practical use of structural equation modeling in research. It begins with first principles and advances systematically through intermediate and advanced topics, introducing at each step the theory that is relevant as well as the practical models needed to implement these ideas on real models used in actual research contexts. The reader can then easily modify the examples for their own research since the types of models discussed will be relevant in many research contexts. Mathematical and statistical details are minimized so that the book should appeal to a broad audience. The book is also timely, being the first text to show how statistics generally, and modeling in particular, can be fun in the Windows environment."

--Peter M. Bentler,

University of California, Los Angeles

Researchers and students who want a less technical alternative to the EQS manual will find exactly what they’re looking for in this practical volume. Designed to help beginners estimate and test structural equation modeling (SEM) using the EQS approach, this practical volume clearly explains and demonstrates a wide variety of SEM/EQS applications that include both partial factor analytic and full latent variable models. Beginning with an overview of the basic concepts of SEM and the EQS program, the author carefully works through applications starting with the easiest, a single sample approach, through to more advanced applications, such as a multi-sample approach. The book concludes with a section on using EQS for modeling with Windows.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Clear Explanations of Complex Material.......2001-04-02

Barbara Byrne manages to make a very complicated topic seem manageable and understandable. This book is ideal for people familiar with the basics of psychology statistics, but relatively new at structural equation modeling. My only complaints are that the index is a bit sparse, so I found myself thumbing through the book frequently; and sometimes the details of how to apply the concepts directly to EQS commands were left a bit unclear. However, overall this was an excellent starter book for structural equation newbies!

This book is designed to provide a comprehensive and understandable introduction to statistical methods in a practical, problem solving framework. Students who use this text in a spatial analysis or statistical methods course will acquire a well-grounded foundation and feel comfortable in applying statistical techniques in research problems or situations that they might encounter in their subsequent geographic education and careers.

This book is targeted for undergraduate geography majors and beginning graduate students who do not have a strong background in statistical approaches to geographic problem solving.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any geography major or graduate student........2006-02-20

This text was assigned for an intro-level statistics course I took that was required for geography majors. While the statistical methods covered in this text are not themselves geographical, they can be applied to geographic research in any of the subfields (human, spatial/cartographic, economic, physical, or people/environment).

All the basics of statistical problem solving are covered, including sampling methods and bias, descrptive statistics, inferential statistics, correlation, and regression. Examples are provided with a geographical context, to make the information relevant to students of geography. There is also a helpful epilogue entitled "Geogrphic Problem Solving in Pratical Solutions," which will be of interest to students with research goals.

The chapters are well-written, with ample narrative examples and clear and concise tables and diagrams. The student-directed list of "major goals and objectives" at the end of each chapter is also helpful, along with key terms (with page numbers) and additional references. My only (minor) complaint is that the black-and-white design of the content is occasionally tedious on the eyes, given the extent of narrative content, and the graphic presentations of the equations in-text makes it occasionally difficult to find what you're looking for quickly.

The second edition is an improvement over the first, with more examples and a much clearer format than the first. While this slim volume is a bit expensive new, I wouldn't recommend getting the first edition. As a geography grad student I continue to refer to this text, and have found it a worthwhile investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Stat Book.......2002-10-18

I've taught an undergraduate statistics class in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida for a few years and found that this book works the best. Even students who tell me they have high math anxiety have enjoyed the text because it explains complex things in a simple and easy to understand way.

5 out of 5 stars from an instructor.......2000-07-31

I have been taking and teaching statistical concepts for almost 10 years now and have never found a better, more concise intro to modern statistics. I sugggest that anyone trying to learn statistics have a copy of this valuable text.

5 out of 5 stars The Best self help book on statistical concepts.......1997-10-20

Although this is an intro text, it is a programming text that trains the reader to comprehend basic statistical concepts. This is especially important if the users "think" they have a "math" problem. It clearly explains in a step by step fashion "how to do it".

Product Description

Researchers and students who want a less mathematical alternative to the EQS manual will find exactly what they're looking for in this practical text. Written specifically for those with little to no knowledge of structural equation modeling (SEM) or EQS, the author's goal is to provide a non-mathematical introduction to the basic concepts of SEM by applying these principles to EQS, Version 6.1. The book clearly demonstrates a wide variety of SEM/EQS applications that include confirmatory factor analytic and full latent variable models. Analyses are based on a wide variety of data representing single and multiple-group models; these include data that are normal/non-normal, complete/incomplete, and continuous/categorical. Written in a "user-friendly" style, the author "walks" the reader through the varied steps involved in the process of testing SEM models. These include model specification and estimation, assessment of model fit, description of EQS output, and interpretation of findings. Each of the book's applications is accompanied by: a statement of the hypothesis being tested, a schematic representation of the model, explanations and interpretations of the related EQS input and output files, tips on how to use the associated pull-down menus and icons, and the data file upon which the application is based. Beginning with an overview of the basic concepts of SEM and the EQS program, the book carefully works through applications starting with relatively simple single group analyses, through to more advanced applications, such as a multi-group, latent growth curve, and multilevel modeling. The new edition features: • many new applications that include a latent growth curve model, a multilevel model, a second-order model based on categorical data, a missing data multigroup model based on the EM algorithm, and the testing for latent mean differences related to a higher-order model; • a CD enclosed with the book that includes all application data; • vignettes illustrating procedural and/or data management tasks using a Windows interface; • description of how to build models both interactively using the BUILDULEQ interface and graphically using the EQS Diagrammer.

4 out of 5 stars easy graphical input .......2006-07-18

Byrne offers a more readable alternative to the hard core approach of learning EQS from its official manual. The latter presents a heavily mathematical framework that might be offputting to some readers who lack a strong statistical background.

Instead, her book goes through much of what EQS can do for you. But at a gentler pace. Giving a brief walkthrough of multivariate statistical modelling. The book starts off explaining the format of the EQS input file. It uses a graphical approach similar to what electrical engineers have for laying out circuits. More intuitive for the user. Where you can draw regressions paths from one component in the diagram to other components, for example. This is reminiscent of how SPICE went from a text input file that described a circuit to a graphical approach that was far easier to understand.

Much of the book then goes into how you can test for causality in your model. EQS has formidable abilities to do so, and you need to master how to control these.
