Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Made Easy: A Practical Guide for Licensure

Book Description
FROM THE PREFACE In the years since the first edition, I have continued to consider ways in which the texts could be improved. In this regard, I researched several topics including how people learn (learning styles, etc.), how the brain functions in storing and retrieving information, and the fundamentals of memory systems. Many of the changes incorporated in this second edition are a result of this research. The changes were field-tested during a three-year period in which I taught a water and wastewater mathematics course for Palomar Community College, San Marcos, California. · All the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily water/wastewater treatment plant operations. This first volume, "Basic Math Concepts for Water and Wastewater Plant Operators," provides a thorough review of the necessary mathematical concepts and skills encountered in the daily operations of a water and wastewater treatment plant. Each chapter begins with a skills check to allow the student to determine whether or not a review of the topic is needed. Practice problems illustrate the concepts presented in each section.

Book Description
Greg Tang has built his career as an author and math missionary on the power of creative problem solving. Now, through winsome "fables" about concepts that are relevant to the very youngest math learners -- sharing, teamwork, etc. -- Greg encourages kids to see the basics of addition and subtraction in entirely new ways. Fresh, fun, and most of all, inspiring, MATH FABLES is perfect for launching young readers on the road to math success!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for 1st graders!.......2005-09-28
This is exactly what my 1st grader is learning in school. 3 and 7 makes 10, etc. Very cute and beautifully illustrated book.
Greg Tang teaches real math.......2005-08-10
Greg Tang's books are splendid for children of many ages. As a former math professor, math tutor and grandmother, I have used Tang's books with 5, 6, 7, and 10-year olds. They are teaching real mathematics, not just counting.
In "Math Fables" a young child understands a number as an amount but also as made up of other numbers. For example, the number 4 is seen as composed of 3 and 1 or 2 and 2. This is the beginning of good mathematics understanding.

A fun way for kids to become familiar with numbers.......2005-06-14
Heather Cahoon provides the whimsical and fun illustrations to a collection of Greg Tang's math-based fables offering 'lessons that count'. The numbers are embedded within each rhyming wildlife story, making for a fun way for kids to become familiar with numbers through text.
Math Counts!.......2004-07-29
Math Fables is another great book by Greg Tang! I love the easy flow of this book, the vibrant illustrations that capture the students' attention, but more so, I love the fact that it shows students that math is all around us. This book is ideal for the target age group as an introduction to a lesson or for pleasure reading. My students loved it! A must have for any primary teacher.
No other counting book is like this one!.......2004-03-12
I had a very hard time finding a counting book that would help me teach 1st graders that numbers are made up of other numbers. This book gives you great poems that are perfect for the exploration of numbers 1-10. The poems are short, descriptive, and beautifully illustrated. With all the math "counting" books out there I know it is difficult to decide which one to choose, but this book is a definite must have! If you are looking to develop early number sense with children and early concepts of grouping then this is the perfect book. This book definitely addresses NCTM standards.

Shark Swimathon
The Ocean City Sharks have to swim 75 laps by the end of the week, and every day they figure out how many laps are left to go. Swimming and subtraction are all part of the fun!
Customer Reviews:
A story of subtraction.......2001-07-07
The Sharks of Ocean City are trying to go to the state swim camp. Their coach tells them the city newspaper will sponsor the team if they can swim 75 laps in one day before the end of the week. The humorous story's plot hangs on subtracting double digits. The cutesy illustrations of fish in swimwear may be amusing to younger children, they did not appeal to me. This is another book in the MathStart series. It has suggested activities and names of some other skill-related books at the end.

Essential Mathematics for Life Whole Numbers book 1.......2000-05-17
This workbook is a great tool in tutoring the remeidial and the gifted student. Both types of students can pace themselfs according to their skill level. The throughness of each subject reviewed is throughly gone back over with challenge and some rote memorization. The authors of these workbooks make every effort to include everyday life skill challenges to make the books seem more real for the student. The story problems reviews help a student by emphasizing the importance of Mathematics. All in all this workbook is a great starting placein whole numbers for all students at any level in their academics.
Book Description
"This is an extraordinary book. It is easily readable even for the non-mathematically inclined and non-Andeanists. It deals with issues of why one counts, what is counted, and how arithmetic operations are used in social life."
Hispanic American Historical Review
"This book is of virtuoso quality in ethnographic research and contains important fresh insights in every section, many of them touching whole areas of inquiry that nobody else has even tried to probe.... This is a major work by a major ethnographer."
Frank Salomon, Professor of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Unraveling all the mysteries of the
khiputhe knotted string device used by the Inka to record both statistical data and narrative accounts of myths, histories, and genealogieswill require an understanding of how number values and relations may have been used to encode information on social, familial, and political relationships and structures. This is the problem Gary Urton tackles in his pathfinding study of the origin, meaning, and significance of numbers and the philosophical principles underlying the practice of arithmetic among Quechua-speaking peoples of the Andes.
Based on fieldwork in communities around Sucre, in south-central Bolivia, Urton argues that the origin and meaning of numbers were and are conceived of by Quechua-speaking peoples in ways similar to their ideas about, and formulations of, gender, age, and social relations. He also demonstrates that their practice of arithmetic is based on a well-articulated body of philosophical principles and values that reflects a continuous attempt to maintain balance, harmony, and equilibrium in the material, social, and moral spheres of community life.

Book Description
Word problems can be especially difficult for elementary students. This resource provides busy teachers with a new problem for every day of the school year. Period quizzes assess how well the students are mastering the problems. Tips for working the problems are provided to the students. This is ideal for improving math skills while giving students a starting activity for each day. Grades 3-5.
Book Description
Whether you realize it or not, numbers are everywhere--and integral to almost every facet of your life . . . from your next raise in pay to the inevitable rise of inflation, your weekly family budget to your end of the national debt. And as George Shaffner amazingly reveals, there are discerning answers (and a great measure of comfort) in numbers. In The Arithmetic of Life, he applies the basic principles of mathematics--addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division--to some of the most profound and just plain puzzling questions of our time.
Illuminated with anecdotes, humor, and insight, each chapter explains a unique part of life that can be understood only through the magic of numbers. Whether it's an unconventional theory on why more things go wrong than right, a simple calculation of how much it will cost you to smoke for a lifetime, why crime (accumulatively) doesn't pay, or a glimpse into the probability of life after death, this enlightening and lucidly reasoned book will forever change the way you think about numbers--and the world around you.

Answers Questions At the Rim of Your Thinking........2004-02-10
This excellent book answers several questions that I have always wondered about - but never knew how to approach them. It also provideds support for issues I feel strongly about but did not understand why. It clarifies why some counter intuitive actions may be so effective. Finally it provides support to those of us working with young adults on how and why to take the proper long term actions. He hints at why rapidly finishing high school and college will provide much more income over the long run.
Math is really only a small building block in this book. No advanced math is required, just addition and averaging. The math is a tool - a simple effective one at that- and nothing more. The main focus is providing solutions to issues one feels strongly about but does not have a clue on how to attack them.
This book has also reminded me of a few ways I better improve myself. I stick to the speed limit and no longer tailgate!!!!!
I just wish Mr. Shaffner would write another book!!!!!
Interesting applications of math and statistics.......2001-08-21
While books on arithmetic certainly aren't for everyone, I found this one to be interesting, and at times fascinating. My favorite chapter, and one that I plan to use at my daughter's school is on how 8th graders can get a job that pays $45/hour. "What kind of job is that," I'm sure you ask... The answer, of course, is "Stay in School". Since high school graduates on average make significantly more than dropouts, you can assign that difference an hourly rate for the hours that remain till graduation day. Sometimes interesting, sometimes fascinating, sometimes a bit of a stretch, but for an engineer, math fan, statistician, etc., definitely worth the buy.
